Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 755

April 2nd, 2023 by Karen Leave a Comment

Tabs

Tabs was a fiend for catnip.

He got into the stuff. Loved it. He loved rolling around in it, wrestling with it, chewing it, rubbing it all over his beauty body and pretending to hide in dense fields of it.

It was one of his favorite “meow time” ways to treat himself.

And it wasn’t a secret. Everyone knew how he felt about catnip. I mean, he starred in more than 20 top-tier, multimillion-dollar beauty ad campaigns for catnip-containing products.

To be blunt, he was mad for it.

Rosie

Rosie, on the other hand, doesn’t derive the same pleasure from catnip that Tabs did, but she is, as you know, a mercurial cat scientist and a semi-pro cat hiker.

She loves hiking, and one reason is because of her botanical pursuits. She knows a lot about chemistry, and she’s always on the lookout for different rare plants with unique scientific properties.

Like, her research indicates that a rare subspecies of catnip exists in the Novato area that has the potential to turn humans into cats.

She’s hoping to find a specimen this spring in the Novato hills and bring it back to her lab, where she hopes to isolate its beneficial properties.

She needs help accomplishing this, though, so she’s enlisted my help and the help of her newest assistant, Connor, to accompany her on these exploratory hikes.

I’ve been on three hikes with her so far, and I’m really enjoying myself. It’s just great to be able to witness a true genius at work in the field… I mean literally in the field.

Rosie says we’re getting close to making an historic discovery. She thinks we’ve narrowed the search down to one remaining hill, and the elusive transformatio nepeta cataria will be ours soon! 🐱

Caturday Surfing, April 1, 2023!

April 1st, 2023 by Karen 9 Comments

Good morning and happy Caturday, beautiful friend!

While Saturday Surfing has traditionally been reserved for beauty reading, going forward Saturday Surfing will now be Caturday Surfing, a weekly spot dedicated solely to all things cats — kitties I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, cat-related stories, videos and whatnot.

Please say hello to Mr. Howell. We met a few weeks ago at the Marin Humane society during Connor’s birthday!

Don’t be fooled by his sweet pink nose and pink toe beans; this lover boy is full of swagger and clearly runs the show. When I visited him, he casually pretended to not be interested, but I knew from the way his eyes pierced through my soul that he was into this crazy cat lady.

I love how hints of his orange tabby-ness show up in his tail, paw and face. That tail, though, right? His stripes are so pronounced!

Anywho, I ran the idea of possibly having a new roommate/boarder by Rosie and she was NOT having it. Her gentle but firm possessive paw on my foot told me all I needed to know during the conversation.

On that note, let’s get to this week’s cat reading!

Important kitty mews

  • Catfluencers (yes, that’s a thing) are now recording their own video camera footage.
  • Apparently every crazy cat lady wants to adopt one of these 8 Abyssinian cats currently at a shelter in Cape Cod.
  • Meet Crash, a one-eyed rescue cat who stars as Cadbury’s next Easter bunny.
  • Hallelujah! It’s kitten season!
  • UC Davis oral surgeons are helping this kitten with a severe cleft palate.
  • If you live in the county of Santa Clara, FYI, the Santa Clara County Animal Services Center is looking for volunteers to foster kittens in their homes.

Like finding gold!

In case your feline companion is a birder.

Awww!

Big cat cafe energy.

Hope the rest of your Caturday is filled with biscuits and kitty hugs.

Karen

Chanel-ing It Out, Day 2

March 29th, 2023 by Karen 3 Comments

Things are lookin’ up, friend. I put on makeup two days in a row!

It’s a rainy one here in Nor Cal – another puuuur-fect excuse to wear Chanel.

I’m really into a pared-down makeup aesthetic right now, as you can see.

What looks are you into these days?

When in Doubt, Chanel It Out | Makeup of the Day

March 28th, 2023 by Karen 4 Comments

My new favorite makeup philosophy is the following: “When in doubt, Chanel it out.”

I haven’t worn any face paint in weeks (!), but this morning, I promised myself that I would give it a try. When I’m feeling like everything is too hard, Chanel was the *only* answer, ya know?

I’m wearing a handful of Chanel favorites in this look!

One thing I’ve relearned recently is that subtle makeup in real life doesn’t translate as well when you’re dealing with the camera. Apparently this is a lesson that I have to learn over and over again, LOL!

Hope your Tuesday has been terrific. It’s a rainy and cold one here in Nor Cal, but I’m focusing on all the blessings.

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 774

March 27th, 2023 by Karen 13 Comments

Happy Monday!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Bucket hat or fedora?

UGH to both right now; however back in the day I rocked ’em with enthusiasm, LOL! I guess I’d go with the bucket hat if I had to choose. I feel like it would do a better job of keeping rain off my face.

2. What’s the longest you’ve been at sea?

Um, like a half a day? I get seasick easily, so I don’t actively seek opportunities to hang out on boats.

3. Bright magenta eyeshadow with black winged liner — yes or no?

Sure, why not! Add a bright red matte lip to it while we’re at it.

4. Something you’re looking forward to in April?

Hanging out with Connor over spring break! Last year I worked the entire week, and although she didn’t mind all the Disney movies, this year I want to take full advantage of the time. I figure I only have a short window of when she wants to hang out me!

5. A scent that means something to you?

Chanel Mademoiselle. Brings me back to my 30s and MBB’s early days – an exciting time in my life when I felt the possibilities were endless.

6. Whatcha wearing on your nails?

Essie Gel Couture in First View, a baby blue.

7. What’s one thing you can do today to set yourself up for a good Tuesday?

Go to bed early, for sure! And jot down a loose work plan for tomorrow before I finish up my day.

8. Do you enjoy spring?

Yes and no. I especially love seeing all the flowers and trees come back to life, but on the flip side of that, my allergies are killer. Everything is bothering me right now!

9. Motorcycle jacket or trench coat?

Ooh, I’d love a soft trench coat.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

1. Bucket hat or fedora?
2. What’s the longest you’ve been at sea?
3. Bright magenta eyeshadow with black winged liner — yes or no?
4. Something you’re looking forward to in April?
5. A scent that means something to you?
6. Whatcha wearing on your nails?
7. What’s one thing you can do today to set yourself up for a good Tuesday?
8. Do you enjoy spring?
9. Motorcycle jacket or trench coat?

P.P.S. Good morning, sunshine! I hope everything goes your way this week and that nothing holds you back. Let your light shine today!

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 754

March 26th, 2023 by Karen Leave a Comment

Unlike Rosie, who holds multiple PhDs in the sciences, Tabs was more of a lover than a fighter…or a scientist. But he did go through his Neil deGrasse Tyson phase.

It didn’t last as long as his kitty modeling phase, of course…

But he still holds the record for the longest cat space walk…

And he will always be known as the first cat to have walked on Mars.

He was also the first feline mission commander at JPL…

And designed what still stands as the most successful cat-created video game in history. 🐱

Rosie

Rosie, though? Her scientific credentials are simply next level.

Unfortunately, she got herself into a bit of trouble this weekend with one of her discoveries.

While working remotely as the lead astrophysicist for the Cat Academy of Technology and Science (CATS) project to create a device that can translate cat meows into human speech, she accidentally manipulated Novato’s gravity!

It was crazy! It lasted all day long too!

She was floating all over the place, and when she finally figured out how to reverse things, she inadvertently opened a rainbow portal in the space-time continuum.

It was pretty incredible. 😹

Saturday Surfing, March 25, 2023!

March 25th, 2023 by Karen 4 Comments

Happy Saturday, friend! Hope your weekend is off to a lovely, calm start.

Can someone please explain why this sticker of the latest iteration of Belle (the princess from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” if you’re unaware) looks like she got glammed up for Instagram circa 2014?

If you look closely, she has the intense under-eye concealer highlight that was so popular back then. I’m seeing lots of bronzer and contouring action, thick black liner on the upper lash line, and overdrawn lips, too. I’m not giving Belle grief, I promise, because I’m guilty of doing all these things back in the day.

Anywho, she looks very different from the Belle I remember from the ’90s cartoon!

I can’t help but wonder if I’m the only person who’s ever contemplated this makeover, hmmm.

This week has been a doozy on this end of the keyboard. I don’t know why I seem to forget this lesson, but dang, starting a new job is really hard.

Side note: I’ve been at my new writing position now for about a month.

I’m using all the organizational tools I know and have, and I’m trying to pace myself, but it’s been quite the challenge to get all the things done. I feel like I’m standing in front of the ocean and the waves just keep hitting me over and over again.

I’m so grateful every day that I get to write, for real, but I’m feeling overwhelmed, to be honest.

It’s been weeks since I’ve put on makeup; I tried to yesterday, but I couldn’t even find my brow pencil. (WHERE IS IT?)

If you’re still stopping by here, first of all, thank you. Secondly, I hope that you’ve been doing well, and that life is treating you kindly. Here’s a couple banana notes for you before we get to this week’s reading.

This week’s reading

  • Just in case you were looking for the best reusable makeup remover pads and towels.
  • Minimalist makeup line Nudestix is launching a new body care collection.
  • For the perfume enthusiasts: 7 new spring scents to sniff!
  • “The philosophy in France is to take care of what Mother Nature gave you, and stylize that with fashion and makeup.”
  • Witchy perfumes are a thing.

Beautiful!

I like this idea.

I need that red lipstick in my life ASAP.

Yes, please.

One more thing. What beauty things have you been into lately? Lately I’m really into painting my nails!

MAC Unsung Heroes: Saddle Eyeshadow

March 23rd, 2023 by Karen 6 Comments

mac saddle eye shadow
Mount up! It’s MAC Saddle…

I’ve loved MAC Saddle eyeshadow for years. It’s one of my favorite MAC neutral shadows of all time!

I know that a few of you gals and dudes who visit MBB also ride horses, so I need to know — does MAC Saddle Eye Shadow in any way remind you of actual saddles? Is this what color saddles are? Because I’ve only ridden a horse once, so I really have no clue.

All I know is I love this color, man, and I’ve been wearing it for years! It’s a — now please don’t run away when I say this — matte orange brown.

Yep, I said orange…but it’s more brown than orange. It’s not obnoxiously orange. The little bit of orange just gives it some warmth.

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

Howdy, pardner. I reckon I’m about a MAC NC42 for refrence, if’n yer inclined to know…

Sometimes I use Saddle to deepen my crease and make my eyes look like they’re set back further in my sockets…

OK, that sounded weirder than it did in my head…but anyway, mattes are useful when you want to make something look more recessed.

You could start with a light brown matte like MAC Soft Brown, Soba or Wedge in the crease first, then add Saddle on top on the part of your crease that you want to look deepest and furthest back.

Feathering it up into the lighter brown you started with also creates a gradient and gives the look a little somethin’-something, a.k.a. complexity.

I’m wearing Saddle and Wedge on my lids and in the crease, Brun and Mulch in the outer corners, Ricepaper to highlight the inner corners and my brows, and Feline Kohl on my water lines.
