What Are Some of Your Best Brow Tips?

October 1st, 2013 by Karen 17 Comments

What's Your Best Brow Tip?
Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC Employee Handbook, Policy #3519: Employees Must Sport Runway Ready Brows at All Times

I mean, what did you expect from a world-renowned kitty supermodel? Of course the dress code is going to be strict. 🙂

Here at the offices of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC, brows MUST be fierce, with a heaping scoop of fabulous-ness on the side.

Natural-looking brows? Um, not if you ever hope to move up the cat corporate ladder.

Luckily, I don’t! I love natural-looking brows, and my favorite way to wear ’em lately has been with two different colors — you know, like in brow duo kits that pair a lighter and a darker shade.

When I used to use brow duo kits, I would mix the two colors together and apply that, but lately I like to use the lighter shade on the inner part of my brows (the side closer to my nose) and the darker one on the outer (the side closer to my ear), because the subtle gradient it creates sort of enhances the natural brow color transition that normally occurs from the lighter, sparser inner brow area to the denser, darker outer brow area.

An ombre brow effect, if you will…

A few more brow tips…

  • When tweezing your own eyebrows, it’s helpful to map out the hairs to be tweezed by covering them with a light application of concealer or a light-colored pencil.
  • When applying color to the brows, try focusing the application in the arch, rather than the inner portion near the nose, for a more natural-looking brow. A well-balanced eyebrow tends to be more dense in the arch.
  • Don’t underestimate the effect of brushing your brows. First brush against the hair growth to separate, then up and back toward the ear to shape.
  • For the look of bleached eyebrows, use Brow Set in a shade one or two shades lighter than your own brows. First brush the wand against the hair growth to cover the brow, and then dip the wand back into the tube and brush with the growth of hair.
  • If using both a brow pencil and Brow Set, try using a darker pencil and a lighter Brow Set for more dimension.
  • Fluid Line in an appropriate shade, like Dipdown with the 208 brush, is great to cover any scars or open areas in the eyebrow.
  • A light powder eye shadow color like Shroom, Rice Paper or Arena placed under the arch of the brow highlights and defines the shape.

And you can do it with more than just powder brow duos. It works just as well with brow pencils, too.

For a while now I’ve been using light brown MAC Deep Brunette on the inner part of my brows and darker brown Deep Dark Brunette on the outer.

I love it! If you have similar hair color, try it sometime, and let me know what you think.

Be aware, though, that it may violate the dress code at your place of employment if you work for a fashion-forward feline dictator. 😉

How about you? What are some of your best brow tips?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Vivid Enough to Tussle With a MAC Lipglass, Estée Lauder’s Pure Color High Intensity Lip Lacquers Flaunt Powerhouse Pigment

September 30th, 2013 by Karen 15 Comments

Estee Lauder Pure Color High Intensity Lip Lacquer
Wearing Estée Lauder Pure Color High Intensity Lip Lacquer in Peach Glass

I think that over the course of almost every MAC-aholic’s time as a semi-professional MAC makeup hoarder/enthusiast, there’s a period during which Lipglasses are, like, the end all, be all pinnacles of lip glossy-ness, and everything else might as well be a sub-par knockoff sitting on a folding card table on a sketchy street corner sidewalk being sold by some guy named Zipper, know what I mean?

Estee Lauder Pure Color High Intensity Lip Lacquer
From the left, six of the 12 Estée Lauder Pure Color High Intensity Lip Lacquers in Peach Glass, Ruby Glow, Melting Sun, Liquid Petals, Wet Plum and Amber Halo

For me, that period was the late ’90s, when if I couldn’t have MAC Spite or Nymphette, I didn’t want anything at all.

But times change. Eventually, my eyes (and makeup bag) opened to new possibilities, with the possibilities in this case being different glosses.

Thank goodness, too, because I would have kicked myself for missing these new potently pigmented Pure Color High Intensity Lip Lacquers from Estée Lauder ($25 each), a new line of 12 long-wearing glosses available now.

Basically, they’re like MAC Lipglasses raised on a high-pigment diet and taught to wield a flocked applicator instead of MAC’s doe foot. They’re also unscented and unflavored.

If You’re Thinking About Photography as a Hobby…

September 30th, 2013 by Karen 15 Comments

…DO IT! It seriously changed my life and opened my eyes to an entirely new world I never noticed before.

And it’s easier to get into now with smartphones and photo sharing sites like Instagram. You don’t have to use a fancy DSLR camera with zillion-dollar lenses (although some dedicated lenses are cool, like wide angle lenses, telephoto zooms and macro lenses for super closeups). You know what they say — I’m actually not sure who said this, but I think it was a famous photographer — “My best camera is whichever one I have with me.”

Now I see pictures everywhere! — and it’s fun to try to catch them, like when the morning light filters through the blinds onto the wall in my hallway.

Before I started thinking of myself as a hobbyist photographer, I never would have noticed something like that…

I took these pics with my iPhone right after rolling out of bed (still had dry drool on my chin… I’m so not kidding.). It was just too beautiful to pass up.

My favorite pics are usually of pretty mundane, everyday things, but from weird angles, like way up high above them or looking up at them from below or the side. There’s beauty pretty much everywhere all around us if we just look a little closer.

The New $10 Maybelline Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadow Palette in Desert Fantasy: When YSL Makeup Fantasies and Bangin’ Budget Drugstore Palettes Collide

September 30th, 2013 by Karen 18 Comments

Maybelline Eye Studio in Desert Fantasy
It’s not a fantasy all. It’s real — the limited edition $9.99 Maybelline Eye Studio Plush Silk palette in Desert Fantasy…

For a penny less than $10 (and sometimes less than that on sale), these Maybelline Eye Studio Plush Silk palettes are some of the best drugstore palettes around.

I’d been so really impressed by the couple I picked up earlier this year in Sapphire Sire and Give Me Gold (both permanent, so you should still be able to find them in stores) that I recently went back for more.

They’re packed with pigment and therefore easy to build up in layers (read: I don’t have to spend hella time buildnig up the colors), and it only takes a few swipes from my brush to blend the colors together, which makes them great for gradients and looks involving multiple shadows.

Plus, I can totally swoosh these on my lids in the morning, do my cat’s bidding all day long, and know that my eyeshadow will look just as fresh at gravy time 8-10 hours later.

Until today, though, it never occurred to me just how similar these are to YSL’s (much more expensive) eyeshadows. In the case of Desert Fantasy, the tabby tum-like texture, seamless blending and creative combination of colors remind me of something you might find basking on a Yves Saint Laurent counter.

Maybelline Eye Studio in Desert Fantasy
Maybelline Eye Studio Desert Fantasy, one of four limited palettes in the “Fall 2013 on the Runway” collection

If you’ve got YSL dreams on a Pop Tart budget, it’s dream time, babe! Catwalk down to your favorite drugstore, and check out these palettes.

There are a number of potentially winning palettes in the permanent line, but don’t miss the four limited edition “Fall 2013 On the Runway” palettes ($9.99 each).

Ohmigosh! — they’re seriously beautiful.

Maybelline Fall 2013 On the Runway
The entire Maybelline “Fall 2013 On the Runway” collection…

They feature brown, gold, black and khaki neutrals; and dreamy jewel-toned teal, blue and purple. When I bumped into them the other day at Rite Aid (I wanted a Vitamin Water), I was like, “Oooh, this one needs a nice lady to adopt her… And this one. AND MAYBE THAT ONE TOO!” 🙂

What a Difference a Woo Makes (A MAC RiRi Woo)

September 30th, 2013 by Karen 17 Comments

MAC RiRi Woo

MAC RiRi Woo

It’s kind of amazing, isn’t it, how much of a difference lip color can make to your whole look?

In that pic up top I’m wearing the exact same makeup I wore in this dramatic plummy black FOTD, with the only difference being the red on my lips, instead of the not-so-wearable dark eyeliner (yup, on my lips).

It seems a whole lot less goth, doesn’t it?

That red, by the way, is a combination of MAC RiRi Woo Pro Longwear Lip Pencil, Lipstick and Lipglass.

MAC RiRi Woo

Ya know, this is one of the reasons I love makeup so much — THE POWER TO CHANGE! It’s practically magic. We’re like Hermione, except instead of a vine wood wand, we wave a brush. 🙂

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 291

September 30th, 2013 by Karen 35 Comments

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Sep. 30, 2013

You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”

Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past six years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Is there a story behind your name and how you got it?
My mom, after watching Airport 66, named me after the actress Karen Black. Mom thought Karen Black was “sexy,” and plus it wasn’t a common name in the Philippines at the time. It was either that name or Stephanie, and I’m so not a Stephanie.
  2. If Hollywood made a movie based on your life, who would play the main parts?
A really, really, really tan Reese Witherspoon with her hair died black or dark brown. She would play me. Ryan Gosling would obviously have to play El Hub. Obvs. 🙂 Even though the two look nothing alike, haha! But still.

The thing is, Detective Unstabler (Chistopher Meloni) would be perfect for the part, but in the end the casting agent (Tabs) would go with Ryan Gosling, and speaking of Tabs, he would play himself…because he’s multitalented like that.

  3. Have you ever gone out on stage to accept an award?
Yes. The last time, I think, was high school graduation. That’s when my academic career peaked. It was all downhill from there…
  4. When was the last time you were moved to tears by something beautiful?
It was at Anthrolopologie last weekend when I was looking at those dog heads. I thought, I want one that looks like Shauna, and I remembered how Shauna would look up at me and give me that goofy smile, and I got kind of teary at Anthropologie looking at dog heads…
  5. What’s your worst quality?
It’s hard to choose from all of them. I don’t mean to sound like I have low self-esteem, but this is a tough one for me right now. Hmm… I beat myself up. I talk to myself in ways that should not be allowed. Maybe that’s my worst quality.
  6. What’s your current favorite shampoo, conditioner or shower gel and why?
It’s this one by René Furterer (I can never say her name) called Karité. It’s a deep conditioning hair mask, and it works great and doesn’t weigh down my hair.
  7. Are you competitive?
In some ways yes, and in some ways no. I get irritated when I know I can do better, but it’s more about competing with myself than others. I’m not going to sell my first born or hang somebody out to dry to get ahead of anyone.
  8. What’s been your favorite fall makeup collection this year?
    MAC Indulge.
  9. How did you learn to drive?
Oh, gawd. Well at first my dad tried to teach me, and that was really, really terrible because he’s the worst teacher, and he has no patience. And in the truck I learned to drive on, the speedometer was broken, so my dad was always getting mad at me for speeding.

Eventually, I just signed up for one of those driving courses where somebody came out to my house, and they had one of those teacher/student cars with breaks on the passenger side. All I really remember from that was that the teacher smelled like cigarette smoke all the time, so I drove with the windows down, and the wind always messed up my hair.

  10. When you think, “sophisticated and pretty,” what’s the first beauty brand that comes to mind?
    Chanel. ‘Nuff said.

Le List

Now it’s your turn. Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em! 🙂

1. Is there a story behind your name and how you got it?
2. If Hollywood made a movie based on your life, who would play the main parts?
3. Have you ever gone out on stage to accept an award?
4. When was the last time you were moved to tears by something beautiful?
5. What’s your worst quality?
6. What’s your current favorite shampoo, conditioner or shower gel and why?
7. Are you competitive?
8. What’s been your favorite fall makeup collection this year?
9. How did you learn to drive?
10. When you think, “sophisticated and pretty,” what’s the first beauty brand that comes to mind?

I hope I can get my feet back under me this week… I’ve been so overwhelmed lately. I haven’t fully recovered from all that traveling this summer. I could easily not do anything for three weeks, and still maybe not be fully recovered.

Oh, well. That’s not gonna happen. Not on Tabs’ watch.

I hope we all have a great week.

Scratch that. I’m sure we will. 🙂

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 263

Tabs the Cat for the Becca Fur Protector Pressed in Peaceful

Who is Tabs the Cat? About six years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model).

This was a pretty easy week for Tabs, all things considered. No redeye flights or business hotels. In fact, Tabs didn’t travel at all. He stayed here in Novato the entire week.

He did have a slew of modeling jobs, though, but everything was shot in studio with a green screen.

It’s pretty amazing what they can do nowadays…

You might be interested in one of his gigs — the one for MAC. It was really interesting. A crew showed up at the front door the other morning with a portable photography backdrop and one of those fancy metal suitcases. They open the case, and what’s inside? How about a $250,000 diamond necklace from Tiffany!?

The necklace was a loaner specifically for the shoot. The crew set up the backdrop in the dining room while a MAC makeup artist did Tabs’ makeup. Then they brought in this huge prop of a giant MAC 217 brush, stood it up next to Tabs in front of the backdrop, and the photographer got the shot.

Amazing, right? 🙂

And here’s the final result…

7 Ways to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

September 28th, 2013 by Karen 383 Comments

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway

Tabs the Cat Presents a Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway

Good morning, glory. Happy first official Caturday of fall. 🙂

Tabs loves this time of year because of the leaves falling. He’ll sit on a windowsill and just stare outside for hours watching the leaves fall. I think the constant movement of the leaves blowing in the wind drives his fine-tuned feline senses wild. Cats crave stimulus, ya know? Even when it drives them to mewl and climb the walls.

Yup, cats are weird…

In other news, I learned a valuable lesson yesterday about getting things done. It’s actually not a new lesson for me. I’ve learned it about a million times before, but I thought I’d pass it on, just in case.

Here it is: if you’re working on a project or anything that means something to you, get an early start, and don’t procrastinate, because I procrastinated yesterday, and now my project isn’t done.

It wasn’t a big deal, but I wanted to call this one company I Googled about ordering some modular wood storage shelving for my office, but I kept dillydallying. Then, when I finally gave them a call in the afternoon, their office was closed.

Because they’re on the East Coast. And I forgot about the time difference.

Grrr…

Oh, well. Guess it’ll have to wait till Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend, babe, and good luck in the giveaway. Maybe we’ll bump into each other on Twitter or Facebook today.
