Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 261

September 15th, 2013 by Karen 8 Comments

Sundays with Tabs the Cat: Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot

Dear Tabby is written by Tabs the Cat, commonly regarded as “the world’s first plus-size kitty supermodel.” Founded in mid 2012, it has quickly become the most widely syndicated cat advice column on earth — known for its fresh, feline perspective on lifestyle, fashion and style issues affecting cats and humans.

Fur to dye for?

DEAR TABBY: One of my roommate cats, Fluffy, has started going gray. She’s developing patches of salt-and-pepper fur, but the thing is, she’s only four years old!

The other day we were outside looking for lizards together when a tomcat walked by. He gestured toward Fluffy and asked, “mrow?” Is she your mommy cat?

Um…I flipped out. Tabby, Fluffy is only six months older than me.

Fluffy didn’t seem to mind, but I suggested that she dye her fur. I’ve seen some really trendy styles (I love lion cuts) and dye jobs online.

I’ve been toying with the idea of surprising her with a free trip to the kitty salon, but what do you think, Tabby? Would it be an appropriate gift?

— Helpful in Houston

Tabs the CatDEAR HELPFUL: Unless you want a big surprise of your own (in the shape of sharp claws and a really angry cat), don’t do it.

I know that in today’s kitten-obessed culture, going gray early isn’t always viewed in a positive light, but it should be. Most cats don’t mind, and some even sport the look on purpose, believing it makes them look more distinguished.

My advice: learn to accept and appreciate your roommate for the kitty she is.

A not-so-model citizen

DEAR TABBY: My co-worker, Buttons, is always asking to borrow money for gravy and catnip, and I usually say yes. But it makes me uncomfortable. We work together at the same kitty modeling agency and see each other every day.

Yesterday at Petco Buttons asked me for 69 cents to buy a can of Fancy Feast. I lied and told him that I didn’t have any money on me, but when I went up to the register to get my gravy with my VISA debit card, Buttons pranced over and told the cashier to also ring up his can on my card.

I was shocked! The nerve…

I work hard for my gravy, Tabby, but I wouldn’t mind so much if Buttons reciprocated. Of course, he never does. What should I do? I’m saving up for grad school right now (I just got accepted into UC Davis’ Catnip Cultivation program), so I need every penny.

— Ticked in Tampa

Tabs the CatDEAR TICKED: That is annoying! Way I see it, you can handle it in one of two ways.

You could take the cat by the claws and assertively tell Buttons to knock it off, or you can bide your time until you leave for school.

Whatever you decide, don’t feel bad. You’re not in the wrong. Buttons is taking advantage.

Office romances: yea or nay?

DEAR TABBY: What are your thoughts on inter-office romances? Specifically, I’m referring to two assistants dating.

My executive assistant, Charlene, whom I’ve worked with since I was a kitten, has been spending a great deal of time at another assistant’s office.

The assistant’s name is Bob, and he lives in the apartment next door.

Bob moved in about six months ago, and I recognized his potential shortly after he arrived. He’s friendly, professional, attentive, and gifted in kitty massage. Tabby, he has all the makings of an exemplary executive assistant.

Charlene must have noticed it, too, because she and Bob have been getting along swimmingly. Either she’s at his office, or he’s at ours.

In a way, I have access to two assistants — which I love! I can send Bob out to get gravy while Charlene brushes my fur.

It’s fantastic!

But I’m worried…

What if their relationship sours? I don’t want to have to choose sides.

— Living Large in Los Angeles

Tabs the CatDEAR LIVING LARGE: This may sound old-fashioned, but I’m not a huge fan of inter-office romances.

I know they’re common nowadays, but they can be bad news if things don’t work out. And that kind of distraction could be bad for business.

With that said, you’re in a tough spot. It sounds like you have access to two great assistants.

Now, I know another cat who was in a similar situation, and he tried to sabotage the relationship by shredding the office furniture and kicking kitty litter onto the floor.

It did not go well. Both assistants ended up treating him like the villain.

In this case, I think your only option is to go with the flow. Neither you nor I can predict the future, but there is a lesson here. Next time, make sure your company has a policy against inter-office fraternization.

Meanwhile…

Good morning! I hope you slept well and had a great night.

So, that movie last night, Riddick, turned out to be better than I thought. It was actually pretty good, but yes, I am a sci-fi nerd, so the bar, ya know, isn’t set very high.

Amidst all the carnage in the movie — and there is carnage; it’s a Vin Diesel flick, after all — there’s even something cute, but I won’t say more. I don’t want to spoil it for you, and you’ll know what I’m talking about if you see it.

Now let’s get this show on the road, shall we? It’s giveaway time, and you could win a $50 e-gift card to spend on anything you want at Sephora.

Good luck, and have a wonderful weekend, babe. Maybe we’ll bump into each other on Twitter or Facebook today.

Beauty Bribe Yourself With Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Energy Body Bath & Shower Gel, or Refreshing Body Cream

September 13th, 2013 by Karen 7 Comments

Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Energy Body Bath & Shower Gel and Refreshing Body Cream

Beauty bribery, babe. It’s the key to getting sh*t done, I kid you not.

If I find myself dragging my feet or otherwise struggling to finish a task, I dangle the idea of getting a little beauty treat if/when I finish, like a carrot in front of a horse’s eyes, and 99.9% of the time, it works.

Of course, you have to be strict with yourself here. I mean, if you don’t finish the task, you don’t get the treat.

The trick works particularly well on household chores (like one lipstick for cleaning two toilets), tasks that require standing in long lines (go to the DMV, get a new nail polish) or any activity tied to sweating (30 minutes of exercise for a new body care product).

And the treat doesn’t have to be a brand new product. It can be a special treatment, like a relaxing bath or manicure, with something you already own.

Like this week, the only reason I exercised at all was Dolce & Gabbana!

I tell myself that I only get to take a shower with Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Energy Body Bath & Shower Gel ($35) after I go for a run.

Seems to be working.

And after I dry myself off, I follow up with Light Blue Refreshing Body Cream (a $51 splurge, albeit a wonderful one).

Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Energy Body Bath & Shower Gel and Refreshing Body Cream

Both have the same crisp, fruity floral scent as the regular Light Blue fragrance, one of my staple perfumes.

On me, Light Blue is refreshing like a resort vacation, with jasmine, apple, orange and musk notes. If you like light, summery scents like MAC Turquatic and Bobbi Brown Beach, you might lurve Light Blue.

There’s also a Light Blue deodorant, by the way, and sometimes I wear that, too.

Three Cheers for the Three Tiered Sonia Kashuk Floral Print Triple Train Case!

September 13th, 2013 by Karen 16 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Foral Triple Train Case
Sonia Kashuk’s ferociously fabulous Floral Print Triple Train Case (and my new snow leopard sweater from Target)

The new Sonia Kashuk Roll Up Valet bag might be better at keeping makeup and brushes separated and organized…but sometimes you don’t care about organization and just want to bring along a sh*tload of stuff!

Well at least I do. 🙂

I have a confession — packing light does not come naturally to me (unlike my knack for tracking down new Kevin Federline-esque fedoras).

It’s actually really hard. Whenever I fly somewhere, I pare down because I have to, but dangnabbit! — those carry-on luggage restrictions sure cramp my style.

Now, when traveling by car, since I can bring however much I want and don’t have to haul my cookies around an airport, I tend to go a little cray-cray in the makeup packing department.

Let me put it this way: I’m the girl with five different face powders and six bronzers at any given time, and oh — what’s that? You want to borrow a glittery nail polish? Can do. I’m sure I have at least two or three of them with me…

It’s time like those, when I can bring however much I want and indulge in my makeup hoarding tendencies, that Sonia Kashuk’s Floral Print Triple Train Case ($19.99) is mah jam.

New for fall, the three-tiered zippered travel case has become my go-to bag whenever I want to bring along hella blushes, powders and/or eyeshadows.

Bulkier products like face powders fit nicely into the bottom tier, which is the deepest level of the bag, and when I stand them up in two rows, the bag fits about 20…

A Permanent Papaya: Le Metier de Beaute Papaya Creme Lip Creme Lip Gloss

Sigh… Like I really needed another reason to obsess over Le Metier de Beaute.

Their shimmery, peachy golden pink Papaya Creme Lip Gloss packs so much pigment that I let out a purvey “Oooooohhhh!” the first time I saw it swatched (would have made R. Kelly proud).

Have You Ever Had a Mani/Pedi Mishap or Full-On Disaster?

September 13th, 2013 by Karen 33 Comments

Once upon a time, this mani was Essie Vested Interest from the Fall 2013 Collection

I was looking at my hands last night and thinking, “Dang, this is a disaster!”

Got me thinking about mani/pedi mishaps…

I haven’t had any nightmarish nail salon experiences, thank goodness (knocks on wood), but I have heard some pretty gnarly stories.

The closest to a mani/pedi disaster was probably the time I treated myself to a fancy pedi at a shoo-shoo-foo-foo spa.

My toes looked great when I left! — but then I accidentally kicked the leg of a table and totally jacked up the pedi on my right foot.

Grumpy!

Since I rarely go out and actually get my nails done, and it costs a small fortune, I was quite…perturbed (batsh*t crazy angry) the rest of the day.

What about you? Have you ever had a mani/pedi mishap or full-on disaster?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!!! 🙂

Lush Las Vegas: Is It Just Me, or Does Everything in This Store Look Good Enough to Eat?

September 13th, 2013 by Karen 31 Comments

One of the BEST things about the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, other than the faux beach-themed swimming pools (with actual white sand!), of which the Lazy River is my fave, there’s also a huge Lush store.

And it’s HUGE!

It took about 20 minutes to sniff my way around the store’s perimeter… It was like Alice in Wonderland up in there, and there were so many yummy smells!

I was pretty much just window sniff shopping, not really intending to bring anything home, because my carryon luggage was already filled to the brim.

But it definitely was a reminder that I need to stop by a local Lush store soon…
