Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 725

August 28th, 2022 by Karen 3 Comments

Tabby Targaryen, first of his name… You know, I’ve often wondered how my tabby boy got his start. He was such a magnificent beast, such a unique creation under the stars.

I know a little. Like, I know he was a stray at one point, because a nice lady in our old neighborhood told me once that he found her one day. She said he was still a small kitten at the time. She was leaving bowls of food outside in her backyard for the neighborhood strays, and one day this little tabby came walking out of the brush toward the food. He was a little worse for wear, wearing an tight collar he’d clearly outgrown.

She removed the collar, gave him a once over, and let him eat his fill. He kept coming around after that, and it didn’t take her long to realize that he was a special guy with a one-of-a-kind personality.

Fast forward some months, or maybe a year, and Tabs, who was still a stray at the time, started exploring further and further around the neighborhood, wooing ladies and breaking hearts (like mine!).

We eventually became friends, but not before he’d already made a name for himself. Yup, before Tabs ever walked a runway, he’d already won the Kitty Super Bowl. In fact, he’d already retired from professional cat football.

Football was his first career, and it’s where he got introduced to big business and brand marketing.

By the time I came into his life, Tabs was already a successful kitty model specializing in athletic apparel and catalog work.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Rosie

Rosie’s origin story was, let’s just say…less dramatic, although not altogether bereft of intrigue.

I don’t know much about it, but I do know that she was something of a boss lady at her foster family’s house, especially when it came to the family’s dogs, and this makes a lot of sense to me based on how she acts outdoors.

I mean, Rosie Pose has two different personalities. Inside the house, she all purrs of lurvies, but outside when we go for her walks? She’s a tyrant! She growls, hisses and bares her claws any time she catches another cat’s scent.

She’s all business outside.

That cat does not mess around.

Saturday Surfing, August 27, 2022!

August 27th, 2022 by Karen 14 Comments

Hello, Saturday!

Reasons to love Saturday

  • Waking up without an alarm clock.
  • Watching a movie in one uninterrupted block of time. Side note: During the weekdays, it usually takes me days to watch a single movie! I’ll have to catch it in small increments during the week. I don’t know if this is a mom thing, but it didn’t start until after I had Connor.
  • S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G while watching said movie.
  • Naps.
  • When El Hub makes breakfast in the morning (he’s usually the first one up).
  • The sound of a house that’s busy and full of life when everyone’s home; right now Rosie is meowing, Connor is watching “Sesame Street” and El Hub is outside taking care of the yard.
  • Running into nice neighbors who I haven’t seen all week.
  • Listening to music.
  • Browsing Ulta for hair products (on my to-do list for later on today).
  • Cleaning. I know, technically NOT fun, but I feel better after things are tidied up a little.
  • Catching up with friends who I haven’t talked to all week.
  • Working out and not feeling the pressure to get it all done by a certain time.
  • Having the time to just look out the window and daydream.
  • Getting takeout or going out to dinner.
  • Visiting the pet store to see all the adoptable cats and kittens.
  • Wearing Old Navy high waisted bike shorts around my house. Honestly, they’re the best.

On an unrelated note, my neighbor came by this morning and gifted me with a random assortment of produce which included a HUGE head of cabbage.

I rarely cook cabbage, so what should I do with it? She suggested quartering it and then sauteing it with olive oil, tomato, salt and pepper. Hmmm! If you have any ideas, let me know.

Onto this week’s reading!

  • Fun fact: Makeup artist Sir John began his beauty career at MAC Cosmetics (where he was fired for being late).
  • Lancôme’s new fragrance Mille et Une Roses has organic roses grown on brand’s very own French farm.
  • The brand NEST is venturing into the wellness space.
  • Products to consider if you’re interested in K-beauty.
  • Exfoliating your hair is a thing.

So fun!

Speaking of cabbage…

Talk to me, doc.

Have a wonderful Saturday, my friend!

Beauty Chat! Big Cats for Chantecaille and the Rise of the Instagram Face

August 25th, 2022 by Karen 15 Comments

I like big cats and I cannot lie!

By the way, if you sang those words to yourself with the melody from “Baby Got Back,” PROPS.

Big cats, specifically black jaguars and cougars, decorate the newest fall eyeshadow palettes by Chantecaille. As a feline enthusiast, all I have to say is MEOW!

I’m intrigued by the blue and bronze shadows in the Black Jaguar palette ($75). I’ve been into luminous lids lately, and the colors and finishes seem purr-fect for glowing lids with a soft swish of liner.

The neutrals in the Cougar collection palette (also $75) look so chic, though. I know I’d reach for it often, although I’m not sure how the shades would translate on tan skin — might be a touch too light.

If you had to choose between the two, which one would you take home? I’m going to put both in my cart, along with a jar of Future Skin which I’ve wanted for ages, just for fun.

There are also four gorgeous new Lip Chics, too. I think I would like either of the shades from the Cougar Collection. Both Prairie Smoke (a mocha nude) and Yarrow (a peachy nude), look like colors I would love.

Side note, it’s cray how makeup pricing has increased with the times. Back in 2010 a Lip Chic was $30! Now it’s $48.

On another beauty note, I read a story about the rise of “Instagram Face” in the “New Yorker” this morning, and it bummed me out.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The New Yorker (@newyorkermag)

Apparently the accessibility of fillers combined with little-to-no recovery time plus the Instagram algorithm are changing how women want to look, and there’s a movement toward everyone looking like the same “sexy baby tiger” on social media.

How do you feel about this?

I want to be diplomatic about it because hey, if it’s what you like and you have the means, do your thang, right?

But I can’t help but feel sad reading this story because I can also see myself as a young, impressionable preteen or teen, and I know this relentless messaging would make me feel bad about myself.

I realize wearing makeup, changing you hair color, getting a perm or shaving your legs is also altering one’s appearance to fit into a certain idea, but filling in your brows with a pencil to enhance them doesn’t seem as extreme as spending thousands on filler to look like every other Kim K. clone on Insta.

Anywho, these are the beauty-related things that are on my mind right now.

Unrelated, but I didn’t realize it was Thursday until, like, 8 in the morning! Been a crazy week. Connor already caught her first cold of the school year and nobody in our house has been sleeping well.

I’m off to buy chicken soup and Vicks (the Filipino mom’s cure for everything).

What Type of Makeup Looks Are You Liking Right Meow?

August 24th, 2022 by Karen 8 Comments

Rosie says hi. I’m obsessed with her ear tips, OMG!

1. A softly shimmering lid.

For a while I was all about mattes because I like how they create an illusion of a deeper crease, but now I love softly shining lids. I think it’s casually chic, which is the vibe I go for these days. By the way, Chanel’s quads are great for this type of shimmering lid look! Today I’m wearing an old school fave, Codes Subtils, which unfortunately is no longer available (boo), but you can get a similar look with any of Chanel’s shimmery quads, like Tisse Rivoli.

2. Blurred lines.

Give me all the smudgy, please. No crisp edges here — too harsh! A cat eye with a blurry edge and a flick that softly fades into its end point? That’s all I want at the moment. Anywho, lately I’ve been getting this by wetting a flat eyeliner brush with setting spray, then loading it with a dark brown, navy, plum or khaki eyeshadow.

Today’s Makeup: Chanel Codes Subtils quad, MAC Glow Play Blush in No Shame and MAC Sugar Sweet Cameo Lipstick

3. As much natural skin peeking through as possible.

A dollop of Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (Wheat) applied all over works wonders. Then, I dab Hourglass Retouching Fluid Concealer (Sand) underneath my eyes, around my mouth and on my cheeks, and then I blend-blend-blend. I set both with the sheerest amount of MAC MSF Powder (Medium Golden). If I wear too much base it just looks heavy and fake, so I try to get away with as little as possible these days!

4. A soft, semi-sheer matte lip color in a bright pink or coral.

Just like the shimmering lid, I feel like this lip look is casually chic. I also like how the matte finish contrasts with the shimmery lid and the natural, glowing skin.

5. Leaving the lower lash line alone!

Dang, girl! I can’t believe there was a time when I’d pile on all the things along my lower lash line. Now I just leave it alone because the more I wear, the more it seems to draw attention to how tired I look and feel. LOL! For me, less has been best for the last year or so.

I think it’s really interesting to see one’s makeup taste evolve and change, don’t you? What type of makeup looks are you liking right now? Please let me know in the comments.

Recipes for a Tropical-Inspired Plate Lunch: Hawaiian Chicken, Hawaiian Mac Salad, Coconut Rice, and Cucumber and Carrot Salad

August 23rd, 2022 by Karen 13 Comments

hawaiian chicken plate top

This Hawaii-inspired meal is still one of our favorites. Try it sometime!

Hi, friend! If you’ve been hanging with me here at MBB for a while, you might already know that my husband (the infamous El Hub!) is from Oahu in Hawaii, and we try to visit when we can to see our family.

We had trips planned for this year to celebrate some big birthdays for the grandparents, but, as you know, “The ‘Rona” was like “HAHAHAAAAAA,” so we haven’t been able to make it back in a while. Hopefully, sooner than later though (fingers and toes crossed).

We’ve been missing Hawaii a great deal lately, so I’ve been making this Hawaiian lunch plate-inspired meal to help us feel a little more connected to the islands.

hawaiian chicken plate side

A Hawaiian lunch plate typically has a scoop of rice, a scoop of sweet and tangy macaroni salad, a protein of some kind (like spam or teriyaki chicken) and a side of veggies. El Hub grew up eating them, and I’m all about ’em now too.

Granted, the plate lunches that I, an SF Bay Area girl, make here probably won’t be considered “authentic” (air quotes) by Hawaiian lunch plate culinary die-hard standards, my family really likes them. Babygirl says this one has “the yummiest chicken ever,” and El Hub has put in more than a few requests for this dish over the last month.

hawaiian chicken with sauce
A little sweet, a little salty, and all kinds of yum!

The protein in this meal is a pineapple and soy sauce marinated Hawaiian chicken, which I cooked in my Instant Pot!

I like using the Instant Pot because I can set it and forget it, and the results are consistently fan-frickin’-tastic. The chicken is always tender and bursting with flavor.

If you are culinarily-inclined, you could probably adapt it to a stovetop or a grill, but I haven’t tried either of those yet. But seriously, the Instant Pot is a foolproof tool for me, so that’s what I use for this meal.

instant pot hawaiian chicken
My much-loved Instant Pot!

I serve the chicken with coconut rice, a creamy Hawaiian mac salad (usually with whatever pasta shape I can find!) and a Thai-inspired cucumber and carrot salad, and when I posted a pic of it a while back here, there were quite a few requests for the recipes…

So, here they are below! Enjoy.

INSTANT POT HAWAIIAN CHICKEN

DESCRIPTION
Tender, juicy chicken cooked in an Instant Pot! Sweet pineapple perfectly balances with the soy sauce sauce, ginger and garlic in this easy, kid-friendly dish.

  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Cook time: 45 minutes
  • Total-ish time: 4-8 hours, depending on how long you marinade the chicken
  • Yield: 6 servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 2-3 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs or tenders (I use a mix of 1 pound thighs and 1 pound tenders)
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 cup low-sodium soy sauce (I used gluten-free Tarmari)
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 6 cloves finely minced garlic (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
  • 1/2 cup of low-sodium chicken broth or water

DIRECTIONS

Marinate the chicken:

  1. Place the chicken thighs and/or tenders in a shallow dish or in a gallon-size plastic bag.
  2. Whisk together the pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger and garlic until the brown sugar is dissolved (or mostly dissolved); then divide it in half.
  3. Pour half the marinade over the chicken in the bag so the chicken is evenly coated. Seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or up to 24 hours.
  4. Refrigerate the remaining marinade until the chicken is ready to be cooked.

Cook the chicken in the Instant Pot:

  1. When you’re ready to cook the chicken, place the trivet into the bottom of the Instant Pot, and layer the chicken on top evenly. Pour in one cup of the marinade from the bag, and then a 1/2 cup of broth or water. Cook on Manual at high pressure for 12-14 minutes, do a 10-minute natural steam release, and then a quick release.
  2. You can remove the trivet and shred the chicken directly in the pot to mix into the juices if you want. Or, you can take them out and shred them outside of the pot and the juice. I usually take the chicken out, shred it, then top it with the sauce, but really it’s up to you!

Make the sauce:

  1. Bring the refrigerated reserved marinade to a simmer in a small saucepan on the stove. Simmer for 5-10 minutes (the longer it simmers, the more reduced and slightly thickened it will be). Spoon it on top of the chicken and/or rice when serving.

CUCUMBER AND CARROT SALAD

DESCRIPTION
Crunchy, tangy and just a touch sweet! This easy cucumber salad tastes just like something you’d find at your favorite Thai restaurant. I customize ours to suit my four-year-old daughter’s palate, but I’ve added options below if you’d like to dial up the stronger flavors.

  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Cook time: 5 minutes
  • Total time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound persian cucumbers, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Optional: 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, 1/4 cup red thinly sliced red onion, and 1/3 cup chopped peanuts

DIRECTIONS

  1. Place peeled and sliced cucumbers in a colander, and sprinkle salt over them.
  2. Toss the cucumbers to coat them with the salt, and let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Gently blot the cucumber slices dry with a paper towels.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar and sugar. Microwave for about 30 seconds until sugar is dissolved.
  5. In a large bowl, place the cucumbers and carrots, pour the rice vinegar and sugar mixture over the top, and stir to combine.
  6. Optional: at this point, feel free to mix in the cilantro and sliced red onion as well.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes, or up to 24 hours.
  8. If you’re using peanuts, sprinkle them on just before serving.

HAWAIIAN MAC SALAD

DESCRIPTION
A creamy, sweet and tangy salad with some crunch. This is a staple on a typical Hawaiian lunch plate. You can easily customize this salad to make it your own by adding onions, your favorite proteins (eggs or chicken would be good!), or maybe even some diced, cooked potato. Totally up to you. When I make it for our family, I leave out the raw onions because otherwise my kid won’t touch the stuff, but I’ve added options below if you prefer punchier flavors.

  • Prep time: 30 minutes
  • Cook time: 10 minutes
  • Total time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 8-oz box of pasta (macaroni is great, but spirals work too! Because El Hub has Celiac and is gluten-free, I use Banza Pasta)
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup mayonnaise, divided (I used light mayo)
  • 1 cup whole milk, divided
  • 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus additional for cooking the pasta
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded carrot
  • 1 cup minced celery
  • Optional: 5-7 green onions, sliced thin

DIRECTIONS

  1. Generously salt a large pot of water, bring to a boil, and cook your past according to the instructions on the box. Drain, return to the pot and toss with the vinegar. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of the mayonnaise and 3/4 cup of the milk until fully incorporated. Then, mix in the brown sugar, salt and pepper.
  3. Toss the cooled pasta into the mayo/milk mixture, and let come to room temperature (I usually wait about 15-20 minutes).
  4. Once cool, fold in the carrot and celery. If you’re using the green onions, you can add them at this point. Whisk the remaining mayonnaise and milk, pour over the salad, and toss well to coat. Add additional salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Chill in the refrigerator until the pasta is cold.

Creamy, tangy and delicious

COCONUT RICE

DESCRIPTION
Lightly sweet and fluffy, this coconut rice is the perfect addition to your Asian-inspired dishes. Long grain rice like Basmati and Jasmine work best; however, I have used short grain rice in a pinch, and although it’s “technically” edible, it’s very gluey and gummy, so I wouldn’t recommend it. Also, I prefer to use the full-fat version of the coconut milk because the fam-bam likes the richer flavor, but you can substitute it with light if you’d like.

  • Prep time: 5 minutes
  • Cook time: 25
  • Total time: 30
  • Yield: 6 servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cups jasmine or basmati rice
  • 1 can coconut milk, regular or light
  • 1 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse, kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Combine the rice, coconut milk, broth and salt in a large pan.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring on occasion to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, then place a cover on the pot, and cook for 16 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat, leave the pot covered (don’t lift up the lid!), and let it sit on the stove for 10 minutes.
  5. Fluff with a fork if you’d like, then serve.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 743

August 22nd, 2022 by Karen 15 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Decaf, half caf or full caf?

All the caf!

2. If you had to wear neon nail polish, would you choose orange, yellow, pink or green?

Neon yellow, I guess? It would have to be very opaque and very shiny.

3. Last time you took a vacation with friends?

Good grief, it was years ago, back when I was in the early stages of pregnancy with Connor. Jen, Cindy and I did a spa weekend in Napa. I remember eating a lot of fries by the pool.

4. What time did you wake up this morning?

5:30 according to my alarm, but I was up a little before that.

5. Solid perfumes: love ’em or leave ’em?

At this point in my life, leave ’em. I like them in theory, but I never use them. Sprays are just easier.

6. Your outfit of the day?

Dark blue high waisted flare jeans, black tank and a tan sweater.

7. Your favorite snack (or snacks) at the moment?

Salami and cheese has been hitting the spot lately. Or sliced bell pepper with a handful of cashews. Oh, I bought a tub of animal crackers from TJ’s recently. A handful is so good with coffee or tea!

8. Have you ever ridden an electric bike?

Yeah, and I was NOT into it. I don’t like the feeling of giving up my control on a bike to a motor. It doesn’t feel right to me.

9. Are you having a nice day so far?

Yes! It’s been relatively quiet at work and I’m getting a lot done, which feels good!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

1. Decaf, half caf or full caf?
2. If you had to wear neon nail polish, would you choose orange, yellow, pink or green?

6. Your outfit of the day?
7. Your favorite snack (or snacks) at the moment?
8. Have you ever ridden an electric bike?

P.P.S. Hello, friend. Here’s a big hug for you. Take good care of yourself this week, and please remember to treat your heart with kindness. 🤗

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 724

August 21st, 2022 by Karen 2 Comments

Tabs always got a kick out of the phrase “the dog days of summer,” to which he’d add, “why don’t we have a cat days of summer?”

Good question, but I’d always tell him not to think too deeply about it…

When I think of Tabs in his prime, I think of him as a summer cat. Lounging on the hot sand at a tropical beach somewhere was one of this favorite activities. Occasionally, he’d even get on a surfboard when he was in the mood, and he was actually an excellent cat surfer.

But I digress…

At the peak of summer, when it was at its hottest like it is now, Tabs would always find a way to look glamorous, while the rest of us would be sweaty and stinky and borderline gross. Didn’t matter. No matter how hot and humid it was, he’d always be chic and sleek and put together.

Like I said, he was a summer cat.

Around this time of year, Tabs would often host a friendly neighborhood get together and invite the local dogs. The marketing team would try to push to call it something nondenominational and subtle, but sometimes Tabs liked a hard sell. The fete was usually called “The Annual Dog Days of Summer Celebration,” which he thought of as an olive branch to his canine cousins.

Boy, it was quite a party too! Imagine hundreds of cats and dogs barking all night long. It was cray!

Rosie

Rosie’s been busy this summer so far. Lots of projects inspired by the sweltering heat, like, she’s working on a sprayable cat fur sunscreen and studying global warming and its effect on cats who sleep in windows.

In other news, she normally isn’t interested in the things I’m working on, but lately we’ve been talking about perhaps adding a canine member to the family, and she’s been unusually interested in my thoughts on it.

Rosie’s quite familiar with animals of the canine persuasion because, in her previous foster home, she lived with three dogs, and I’ve been told by her foster mom that by the time Rosie’s kittens were weaned and ready to go, she was showing all of the dogs in the house who was boss.

I’m guessing she thinks that if she were to get a dog companion, she’d be able to persuade him or her into becoming her assistant.

I can see that happening from a mile away. 😹

Saturday Surfing, August 20, 2022!

August 20th, 2022 by Karen 9 Comments

Shout-out to all the people who can’t be trusted to eat a saucy meal while wearing a white shirt!

Hi, there! Happy Caturday. How’s your day going so far? Good, I hope.

Check this out — last night’s dinner. Nothing fancy, just spaghetti with red sauce and parmesan cheese because by the time I get to Friday I’m too tired to cook anything complicated. My neighbor gave me some fresh basil, so I couldn’t resist making a vat of pasta.

With fresh basil!

This brings me to the pic at the top. Anyone else out there need to change their shirt before eating anything with red sauce? I have a janky UC Davis tee, complete with frayed edges and holes in the armpits, which I wear only when I’m eating spaghetti. LOL!

I can’t be the only person who cannot be trusted to eat tomato-based meals with a white shirt on.

Anywho, ’twas an exciting week on this end. Not only did Connor start first grade, she also lost her first tooth.

First day of first grade and first lost tooth!

This one was a cool customer and didn’t freak out at all. She told me, “I took a bite of my lunch, my tooth got stuck in my food, and it twisted right out. No big deal.”

Does anyone know the going rate for a tooth from the tooth fairy? I took a guess at $5.

This week’s reading

  • The movie “A League of Their Own” gets a remake and makeover involving lots of red lipstick.
  • Hair gel is the unsung hero of your hair routine.
  • There are a few affordable options on this list of shampoos and conditioners for big, voluminous hair. Yay!
  • What it’s like to run your own nail polish brand.
  • How lipstick and underwear can predict the economy.

I need some of this.

Um, wow!

TLC for your feet.

Holla if you have a hooded eye sitch.

Chill.

I loved this when I was a kid.

I’m in need of some outfit inspo.

Bach is NO JOKE.

Have a great rest of your day, and please take some time to rest this weekend!
