Do You Bother With Makeup When It’s Hot?

September 6th, 2022 by Karen 11 Comments

We’re currently experiencing a crazy heat wave here in California that’s not expected to break until Thursday. It’s so uncomfortably hot that clothes are annoying! 🤣 I’ve changed my top three times already because even my lightest cotton shirt feels like a heavy sweater. I have a series of meetings today, and quite honestly, I don’t know if I can deal with makeup sitting on my face. I like comfy sheer textures and lightweight formulas, but just the thought of my fave lightweight concealer in this heat feels oppressive. It may just be a brows, mascara and lip gloss kinda day on this end.

How about you? Do you bother with makeup when it’s broiling outside?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Stay cool in this heat, my friend!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 745

September 5th, 2022 by Karen 14 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. What’s the last picture you have on your camera roll?

A croissant and latte from yesterday’s breakfast at Creekside bakery in Novato. (Please see above.) The croissant was perfectly flaky and buttery, and the latte was rich and creamy. If you’re ever in town, definitely stop by for a bite.

2. Pick a mode of travel — airplane, train or car?

I’d pick a car first, but only if the drive was less than 10 hours and did not involve winding roads. Otherwise, I’d go with the airplane. I’ll give the train a hard pass as I’ve only traveled by train a handful of times in Europe. I remember it being stressful because of the language barrier; I also remember being on guard and not being able to relax at all.

3. Would you rather read a book or listen to an audiobook?

I’d rather read a book. It has to be a physical book where I can turn the pages, though. (I don’t do Kindles.)

4. What helps you relax after a long day?

A hot shower, comfy pajamas and a simple, healthy meal. If I can have those three things, I feel cared for.

5. Loose powder: love it or leave it?

Love it, but it’s gotta be Chanel.

6. Three beauty-related things you never get tired of?

Hair care products, fragrances (I love reading about them!) and sunscreen.

7. A podcast you like?

“Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing” is my favorite at the moment.

8. How many hours of sleep do you need?

Eight hours is my sweet spot. Note to self: go to bed early tonight!

9. Something nice that happened to you recently?

Yesterday, Connor and I took a walk in our neighborhood. During our stroll, someone rode by on a bike with a basket on the handlebars, and inside the basket was the cutest little dog having the time of its life! It was such a fleeting moment, yet it brought both of us so much joy.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 726

September 4th, 2022 by Karen 1 Comment

Our boy Tabs was a big cat with an even BIGGER heart. He liked to maintain his reputation as a self-centered diva, but if you knew the real Tabs, you knew that he was actually very giving and sweet and had a soft spot for underprivileged cats.

As much as he loved publicity, we often did things under the radar, like, every year we hosted several bake sales in conjunction with Bouchon Bakery in Yountville, California, and between you and me…each of those events pulled in big bucks for various cat charities and worthy causes, including Camp Catnip, a nonprofit Tabs started to help young kittens in need.

That was just the tip of the iceberg, though. Tabs also hosted elite annual fundraisers all around the world from Milan to Paris, Monaco, Barcelona, Rio and Tokyo. Yes, those were long days and nights, but I didn’t mind at all because I knew they were for the kittens.

The only trip he didn’t take me on was the charity concert he hosted on the moon (!). His engineering team, in conjunction with NASA, terraformed 200 acres of lunar landscape!

Yeah! I know! I was secretly relieved when he told me that I had to remain at home base to water his plants…

Rosie

To this day, Rosie is deeply envious of that famous moon concert project Tabs put on all those years ago, but she does what she can. Like, to help cats and kittens in the North Bay Area who are interested in science, Rosie started hosting monthly bake sales.

They raise good money. Plus, she finds the scientific aspects of baking fascinating.

And then this last weekend I assisted Rosie with a community fun run for cats in coding. As you can imagine, it was a big success.

Yup, never a dull moment around here. 🙂

Saturday Surfing, September 3, 2022!

September 3rd, 2022 by Karen 1 Comment

Good morning! How are you doing, friend? I hope these gorgeous pink lilies bring you some cheer today. They’re called “naked ladies” (or Belladonna Amaryllis), and they pop up in the Bay Area around this time of year. Beautiful, yes?

We just finished breakfast; I had a cup of coffee with a slice of homemade banana bread. My neighbor gave me a huge bunch of bananas last weekend, and so I made Sour Cream Banana Bread.

I doubled the amounts and popped it all in a bundt pan! It was SO easy to make and required very little effort.

Please ignore the wonky bits, LOL! Apparently I didn’t grease that section of the pan enough.

I went around giving slices to my neighbors and received five-star raves! Connor loves it, too. I’m definitely making it again soon. If you have ripe bananas (you’ll need about three) and sour cream around, give it a try.

Oh, I would like to note I reduced the sugar by a fourth because the bananas I used were very ripe. Doing that added just enough sweetness without taking it over the edge. I’m finding that as I get older, I don’t like things that are overly sweet. Anybody else notice this, too? It’s WILD to me because I’ve had a sweet tooth since I was a child. Weird how your taste buds change!

What Do You Think About Print Beauty Magazines Disappearing?

September 2nd, 2022 by Karen 30 Comments

Gonna miss ya, Allure.

Allure announced recently that they will cease printing the magazine and moving to an all-digital platform; the last print edition will be December 2022.

It was always one of my favorites, so this bums me out. I’m going to miss curling up on my couch with the latest edition and a cup of coffee on Saturday morning.

Truth be told, I’m not really surprised they made the move. With all the various social media platforms popping up in the last 10 years, beauty lovers have so many different avenues to get their beauty news, and print feels so slow compared to the quick fixes you can get online.

I still enjoy a really long, intensely researched beauty story; I also love having a physical item to hold while I read. I like the sensation of feeling the weight of a magazine in my hand and the pages between my fingertips. I also don’t always want to be staring at a screen all the time, you know?

Oh, and the ability to tear out pages! I’m so gonna miss that.

Where were you in November 2000? Apparently I was tearing pages out of magazines

Magazines are disappearing. I’m glad, though, that I can still remember the feeling of getting new issues in the mail, or stocking up on them at the airport before a long flight.

Karen

P.S. TGIF!

Checking In: The Gift of Vegetables, Cabbage Rolls and Chanel Tweed!

September 1st, 2022 by Karen 16 Comments

The bounty of produce being gifted to me by my neighbors continues! Check out these beans…

What does one do with purple beans? I’m thinking of roasting them, but I dunno. A heat wave is coming in, and I don’t fancy turning my oven on when it’s boiling outside.

Oh, remember that massive head of cabbage my other neighbor gave me last weekend? I ended up making cabbage rolls with ground beef, rice and parsley.

This was my first time, and they turned out OK!

I found the recipe on the Jenny Jones cooking blog. Remember Jenny Jones, the talk show host from the 90s? A few years ago she was active on YouTube and did a whole bunch of cooking videos, and they’re fun to watch. It’s been years since she’s posted, though.

Jenny Jones fun fact: before she rose to fame, she owned her own catering business.

I’ve tried two recipes from her site so far, the cabbage rolls and a 20-minute meal called spaghetti with cherry tomatoes, both of which were light, easy and excellent.

Back to the cabbage rolls. Jenny says they’re great as leftovers the next day and suggests frying them in a pan with a little bit of olive oil. That’s what I’m gonna have for lunch today. YUM!

On a beauty note, the tweed quads are up on the Chanel website. The one with browns, taupes and rosy shades, Brun et Rose, looks really lovely.

There’s also new nude nail polishes that look good, too. I don’t know what it is about Chanel, but they do such a good job of hitting all the right notes when it comes to neutrals and basics. UGH, WANT.

What else is going on, hmmm? Oh, forgive me for living underneath a rock, but I’ve only recently discovered the singer Harry Styles.

I’ve been listening to a random assortment of his music, and these are the two songs I’ve had on repeat.

Sometimes he reminds me of Prince and sometimes he sounds like the band Phoenix; it’s hard to pin his genre down. If you get a moment give his songs a listen.

Alright, I’m off to start my day. I hope you’ve had a wonderful week so far! Did you wake up this morning just as surprised as I was to find out that it was Thursday? Yes? No? Whatever you’re up to today, I hope you find a way to find joy in your tasks — even the mundane ones.

7 Reasons to Love Red Lipstick

August 31st, 2022 by Karen 10 Comments

stila beso

1. Red lips do so much heavy makeup lifting.

You totally have the option to phone the rest of your look in if ya want! With red lips, I know I can get away with wearing minimal makeup on the rest of my face — brows, mascara, concealer and bronzer.

2. There are so many different shades of red.

Blueish reds, orangey reds, reddish corals, pinkish reds, reddish browns… Seriously, SO MANY SHADES OF RED! Side note: do you tend to favor a certain type of red? Lately I’ve been into of reddish corals.

3. Red lips are classic, but at the same time they also say, “I can and will cut you if need be.”

I’m kinda kidding but also not. Red lipstick is a gentle reminder to the rest of the world that you are not to be messed with.

4. There’s always a new red to look forward to.

Some might say “there’s always a new red to covet,” and in my case, that’s so true. (Here’s looking at you, Dior 999.)

5. There are so many different levels of coverage and intensity.

Do you like sheer or full-on reds? I love an opaque, matte red myself!

6. Red lips are confident.

For me, red lipstick is a form of makeup armor. When I wear red lips, I feel like a gladiator who is ready to handle all the nonsense coming my way!

7. Red lips are unforgettable.

Oh, and if you live in the suburbs like I do where nobody hardly wears makeup or dresses up, they are especially unforgettable. The general fashion vibe in my town is Lululemon-slash-granola chic. I’m by no means fancy, but whenever I show up with red lips to a school or a dance studio function, I’m suddenly the “glamorous mom,” and I’m not mad about it.

Why do you love red lipstick?

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 744

August 29th, 2022 by Karen 14 Comments

laura-mercier clique velour extreme matte lipstick
Have a red lip kinda Monday!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. What lip colors do you wear the most?

Corals, rosy nudes and all the shades of pink! Red when I’m feeling it (like today).

2. Press on nails: yes or no?

In theory, yes, I don’t mind them, especially if you’re pressed (ha-ha!) for time and need polished nails in a pinch. In practice, though, no. I don’t like the feeling of something stuck to my nails and hands. It bothers me and I end up thinking about it and obsessing over it. Yes, I’m a weirdo that way.

3. Blue eyeshadow: yes or no?

Heck yeah!

4. Liquid, cream or stick concealer?

Liquid, please. It’s so much more forgiving under my eyes.

5. Red lipstick: love ‘it or leave it?

Love it! Today I’ll take a matte red, in a warm reddish tone; I’ve got my eyes on Dior 999! If it’s stocked at my nearby Sephora that baby is mine. I need a lil’ pick me up.

6. Your thoughts on wearing workout wear 24/7?

It’s definitely a big trend where I live in Marin county. Lots of ladies rock workout gear all day, every day, and they look super cute doing it, too. I tried it for a month and it wasn’t really my thing. I felt sloppy! Give me shirts with some structure, please, and pants that don’t cling to my butt.

7. Last person you texted?

El Hub. We talked about Connor’s cold, and if she was well enough to go to school.

8. Your breakfast today?

A Dave’s Killer Protein Raisin bagel toasted with butter. Oh, and a Nespresso, of course. It was an Odacio kinda morning.

9. Something you’ve got planned for the week?

YARGH, I have to go and stop by a place in town that sells blinds and drapes in order to do some research. I was all set to get roller shades, but then it occurred to me that if Rosie hooked a claw into one it would all be over. I would like to find a window treatment solution that’s 1) isn’t too visually overwhelming so we can take advantage of our views of the oak trees, and 2) pet friendly.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
