Topshop Cheeks in Luminescence Is Sticking It to MAC Nymphette

June 14th, 2011 by Karen 51 Comments

Topshop Cheeks in Luminescence on cheeks

If you’ve spent sleepless nights (LOL! I almost typed “knights.” Yeah, someone’s been obsessed with Game of Thrones lately.) tossing and turning over the need to find a cream blush version of MAC Nymphette Lipglass, as bizarre as that might sound, you wouldn’t be the only one.

I’m right there with ya, babe! 🙂 But get this: Topshop might finally have a cure for what ails us.

The line recently introduced three new creamy, multi-purpose sticks called Cheeks, $20 blush/highlighters designed to add shimmery color to faces, lips, bodies and — you guessed it — cheeks.

If they look familiar, you’ve got a good eye. Luminescence, a peachy pink with golden pearl, must have a girl crush on MAC Nymphette Lipglass because it’s totally biting her style. It’s a pretty close reproduction of the color in stick blush form, and it glows on lips and cheeks. It and the other Cheeks are like thicker, creamier NARS Multiples that feel wetter to the touch and cost about half as much as their counterparts at NARS ($20 vs. $39 for a Multiple).

For a soft sheen, I’ll dab the Luminescence stick lightly on my lips and cheeks, blending it in with a finger. And for a bolder effect, I’ll apply one or two more layers (directly from the stick), again blending out the edges with a finger.

Whether atop bare skin or foundation, the formula adheres well to my combination dry/oily skin. I have noticed, though, that when my cheeks are oilier than usual, the color scoots right off, sometimes within minutes, but starting with a layer of primer (and ending with some powder) seems to take care of the problem.

One last thing: the golden pearl in Luminescence has a tendency to emphasize large pores and any flakes on lips and skin. Just something else to keep in mind.

With Cheeks, Topshop gets the price just right, and I love this particular color. Too bad Topshop couldn’t encourage these to get along better with oily and less-than-perfect skin.

PRICE: $20 each
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Topshop stores and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B

Dudes…

Why are they so hard to shop for? El Hub and my brother both have birthdays coming up, and Father’s Day is Sunday, yet I have NO FRICKIN’ CLUE where to start. I guess I could always go with a gift card, but where’s the fun in that?

I suppose if I get desperate, I could order this NASCAR fruit sculpture thingy I saw on an Edible Arrangements commercial last night…

I dunno. Maybe if it were made out of smoked meat instead, haha!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi Solangel,

I’m wearing Topshop on my lips, too. That’s Glaze in Laid Back. Here’s pics and a review:

Men really are impossible to shop for! That’s why I usually do the gift card thing for the various men in my life.

That color looks really pretty, but I really hesitate since it emphasizes pores. Mine don’t need any more of a spotlight on them!

I may have to go the gift card route, even though I KNOW they end up piling up. Le sigh…

There’s also good old dried mystery meat if I get desperate (what is it with guys and jerky?).

Anywho, it was HOT down here today! I think summer’s finally in the house. 🙂

Yep, it was hot here, too. We’re skipping right over spring and getting summer. Therefore, Missy has started shedding like crazy. Black fur all over my lap today.

True story about guys and gift giving. One year I asked my best friend John what he wanted for his birthday. He hemmed and hawed and had no idea what he wanted so I got him a gift card from some electronics store figuring he’ll probably get something for his computer. Well, he is SO indecisive, that the the one year expiration came up on his card and he STILL hadn’t decided what he wanted, and when he finally did, the store didn’t want to let him use the card, so he had to talk to a manager and plead his case. I forget if he ever ended up getting anything.

So, I had to do a little happy dance today when I drove by the Santa Rosa JC Penney’s and there was a sign on the door that said “coming soon, Sephora at JC Penney’s!” I’m so psyched!

Ooh, how exciting about getting a nearby Sephora! 🙂 That’s good stuff.

Game of Thrones!!! I finished all the books, too 🙂 And season 1’s winding down 🙁 Can’t wait for the next.

Anyway, I do wish our local Topshop carried beauty products. There’s a Nyx equivalent of this, I think, but I’m not sure.

I completely agree that guys are really difficult to shop for (though for me, everyone is). My solution to this is finding what he is needing or into at that time and buying smt for it. And in case that doesn’t work, there’s always the filet mignon option, haha 🙂

What I do with my brother, dad or boyfriend’s birthdays if I can’t think of anything for a present is to take them out for some dinner. Can’t go wrong with food! (smoked meat will work in a pinch too)

This looks very pretty! I keep reading nice reviews of the Topshop makeup range, but whenever I end up in the shop I feel less than excited by their display. Probably because about a million of greedy teenagers have been there before sticking their fingers everywhere and making the whole thing look a real mess.. [end rant]

Curious about the “not for use on eyes” line – is it because the composition includes nasty chemicals?

Oh oh, on a very different topic, can I quickly boast? 😀 I’ve won some Nude products via their Facebook competition and have been entered for the final phase (ie reviews)! I’m so excited!

The blush is pretty, but it is kind of expensive (in cream blush denial….considering I own two Stila CC’s).

Guys are hard to shop for. Shopping for my dad is a huge pain in the you-know-what. This year though, I outsmarted him. I already bought his present. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Okay, it hasn’t been paid for, technically, and it hasn’t been made, technically, but it IS in the works of being made. I’m paying for it on Friday, but it probably won’t be done for a couple of weeks (because, you know, it is a custom piece and everything.) Technically, it’s not just me buying it either. It’s a three-way present as $70 is expensive for my $60 every two weeks paycheck.

He has NO idea about it either. I asked Zena what she thought about being the subject and she just rolled over. Y’know, you think she would be wildly ecstatic. The secrecy might kill me though…(although, technically, I could tell y’all. He hates beauty blogs.)

For guys, I try to think of what they like to do or their favorite show. For example, if his favorite movies are James Bond movies (like my dad…..he also likes Clint Eastwood and Westerns.), think about James Bond memorabilia like sculptures, gadgets, replicas, etc. or the movies he doesn’t have. (Jeez, why didn’t I think of this LAST YEAR?) Or, if you happen to be visiting Washington, D.C. sometime in the near future, print out Plan Your Visit page of the Spy Museum and say, “Honey, when we go to D.C., we’ll take a day off to visit the International Spy Museum. That’s your gift. The tickets are on me.” (Seriously, I really should have thought about this last year. A spy museum + my dad = a match made in heaven.)

I won’t know until NEXT MONTH. Gr. See, either I’m WAY early or…well, way late (like, a week) for the birthday present. I always make birthday dinners, but heaven forbid if I ever remember getting those gosh darn birthday presents! It’s hard to make them surprises for my parents because they have to drive me!

This year I commissioned one of the artists I admire on dA (this is her gallery of animals) to paint a watercolor portrait of Zena. I really love her animal portraits and I saw she was open for commissions. If there is one person who loves Zena more than me, it’s my dad. So, my mom, my brother and I split the cost. When we get it, we’re going to frame and then wrap it. I’m bad, I know. XD

I totally understand about buying gifts for guys. My boyfriend, luckily, is a total clothes horse, so I can always just get him clothing and he’ll be excited about it (although, I got him a Kindle once). Dads are the hardest, though. I didn’t want to hear, “Oh, another sweater,” so I got him the blu ray of the first season of the Walking Dead and some noise isolating earbuds for his iPod. They’ll be good for flying. I didn’t spring for the noise canceling ones, though, because I know he’s most likely going to lose them, haha. What do you think you’re going to get?
