NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils: Welcome, Matte

August 15th, 2008 by Karen 22 Comments

Everyone has their obsessions, and my obsession of the moment happens to be matte. At the NARS counter today I couldn’t pull myself away from these Velvet Matte Lip Pencils ($24). It all started with these awesome reds…

And these…

Dragon Roll and Dolce Vita — so tempting! I didn’t bring any home with me because I’m saving up for MAC Cult of Cherry next week. I figure if I’m still thinking about ’em in a week, the mall is just a couple miles away. 🙂

What do you think of matte colors? Are you pro- or anti-matte?

It’s a little before quittin’ time here at Casa de Karen. I’m wrapping up some pics for a Sally Hansen post, waiting for my laundry to stop and looking forward to watching a Tivo’d episode of The Golden Girls (I have four to watch!). I’m a little burnt out right now, so I’m probably staying in this evening. I may rent a movie or hit the bookstore to read trashy magazines. TGIF!

MAC Kirsch Face of the Day: A Dark Shade for Day Walkers

August 15th, 2008 by Karen 44 Comments

day | walker

noun
1 a sub-species of vampire from European folklore, which, unlike traditional vampires, is able to survive in full sunlight; still must drink the blood of the living by biting their necks with long pointed canine teeth.

Yesterday, as I was “dropping the kids off at school” (ha, ha, TMI, I know!), I spent some quality time perusing this month’s issue of Sephora Beauty Authority magazine. The model’s dark, matte lipstick reminded me of vampires and MAC’s Kirsch Mattene.

I wanted to try a similar cat eye-dark lip look but had to keep it responsible enough for the office (boo).

Fun with MAC Kirsch Mattene

Guess who just watched Zoolander

The lips are my favorite part of this look! Following Gordon Espinet’s dark lipstick application method, I lined them with Chanel Nude Lip Liner followed by two layers of Kirsch, applied with a lip brush. Watch out, Count Chocula!

Fall in Love with Fall Makeup

August 13th, 2008 by Karen 25 Comments

What a glorious fall Wednesday, ladies! Wait — fall? Did she say fall? Yep, it’s already fall in makeup-land, so grab your tweed coat, knee-high boots and your favorite scarf, and let’s take a moment to peep some of this fall’s current and upcoming makeup collections.

  • Bobbi Brown — Now You Can Go Goth with Bobbi Brown Mauve Collection Lipsticks and Glosses
“Bobbi threw me a curve ball with the lip colors in the Mauve Collection, her new fall makeup line. I’d been searching high and low for edgy yet wearable lipsticks and glosses in shades of purple, and these colors are, dare I say, edgy yet wearable. They’re eye-catching without going over the top, and within the colors there’s enough variety to allow you to create lots of different looks. Go on with your bad self, Ms. Brown!”

  • Bobbi Brown — Bobbi Brown Pretty Pink Metallic Lip Color: Yeah, It’s Good
“When it comes to pink lipsticks, I am a one-woman army. I’ve been hoarding them since high school. My arsenal is such that if hostile aliens landed and the fate of the world hinged on our ability to scare them away with tubes of pink lipstick, the Earth would prevail! I’d whip out one of my new favorite pink shades for fall, Bobbi Brown’s Pretty Pink Metallic Lip Color ($22), and wave it above my head like a light saber.”

  • Bobbi Brown — Simulate Sleep with Bobbi Brown Metallic Eye Shadows
“The three pastel colors from Bobbi’s Metallic Collection make it easy to fake a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed look. All three colors are highly pigmented with excellent color payoff. They’re also easy to blend and apply, lasting all day long with nary a crease.”

  • Chanel — Gaga for Gold with Chanel Fall 2008
“Fall may be months away, but the collection just arrived at Chanel counters nationwide. I fell in love with five of the products in this release — two of the Glossimers (Delight and Gold Light), Facettes D’Or Highlighter in Gold Fever and two of the lipsticks (Pepeete and Formentera).”

  • Chanel — Lip Look: Today with Chanel Formentera Lipstick
“Part of the Chanel Fall 2008 makeup collection, Formentera shines like mad yet feels whisper light on my lips. It’s a pretty option when you want the staying power of a lipstick with the shine of a gloss.”

  • Clarins — Clarins Jazzy Colours Fall Collection: Cooler than Jazz Hands
“Take a break from all the berry and chocolate dominating this fall’s makeup collections, and take a look at Clarins. Their Jazzy Colours collection evokes the carefree elegance of the Roaring Twenties, and its grey, blue and rose shades make me want to dance the Charleston in a fringe dress, ha! All I need now is a bob haircut.”

  • Clinique — Clinique Fall 2008: Game, Set, Matte
“If you don’t have much experience with matte eye shadows, the Stay Matte shades may be worth a try because the colors are less intense than those in the MAC Matte2 line. I think that makes them a little easier to use.”

Bobbi Brown Black Pearl Shimmer Lip GlossChanel Aqualumiere Formentera

  • Dior — Dior Fall 2008: Impression Cuir Fall Pics and Full Product List
“…let’s take a moment to wax philosophic about an upcoming fall collection slated for a summertime release: Dior’s Fall 2008 Impression Cuir makeup collection. No matter what Dior calls it, this collection looks hot. Put on your water wings, grab some sweet tea (or gin and juice, haay!) and take a look.”

  • Dior — Sneak Peek: Upcoming Dior Impression Cuir Fall 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palettes
“Dior is at it again, girls. I love Dior in general, but their eyeshadow quints are what I look forward to most of all. This August, they’re giving us *two* new palettes for fall. Oh, be still my broken knee.”

  • Essie — Essie Fall 2008 Nail Polish Collection Keeps in Character for Fall
“Check out Essie’s fall polish line ($8 each). Keeping in character for fall, the collection features deep plum, berry and cherry shades that look good enough to eat (I’m always hungry, LOL!). Sometimes I shy away from uber-dark shades because of how obvious it can be when they chip, so I’m glad Essie decided not to go too vampire dark with these colors.”

  • Estee Lauder — Estee Lauder Chocolate Decadence: All the Chocolate, None of the Guilt
“With lots of eyeshadows, lipsticks and glosses in colors inspired by berries, caramels and chocolate, this collection could have been by Willy Wonka. Aren’t the swirl patterns tasty?”

  • Lippmann — Play to Win with Lippmann Collection Fall Nail Colors
“Seeing these Lippmann Collection fall nail polish colors ($15 each) for the first time, I thought one thing: VEGAS, BABY! The red, black, white and black-purple colors remind me of playing cards.”

  • MAC — MAC Cult of Cherry: T-Minus Two Weeks and Counting
“What makes Cult of Cherry noteworthy? For me it’s the rich reds, dark plums and chocolate browns. The collection includes nine lipsticks (four Mattenes), two blushes, five Lipglasses, three eye shadow quads, two nail polishes and Zoom Lash mascara (also part of MAC’s permanent collection).”

  • MAC — MAC Cult of Cherry: A Look at Some Lipsticks
“G’morning, girls! 🙂 I had makeup dreams last night. I dreamt I was sitting on my bed, gloriously happy and surrounded by makeup. I was playing with MAC’s upcoming Cult of Cherry collection, probably because I thought about it so much yesterday.”

  • Sally Hansen — Autumn in the City: Sally Hansen Fall Nail Lacquer Colors by Tracy Reese
“I suppose my love for the city in fall explains why I’ve fallen for Sally Hansen’s new nail collection, inspired by 10 fall colors created in collaboration with clothing designer Tracy Reese. The industrial grey, black and blue shades contrast well with maroons and neutrals, as do the streets of my favorite city in the fall.”

What has been your favorite fall collection so far?

I think mine is MAC’s Cult of Cherry, but the season’s still young, ha!

Karen

Saturday Surfing, May 25, 2024!

May 25th, 2024 by Karen 2 Comments

Hiya! Connor has the last of her dance performances for the school year this weekend, so chances are I’m doing dance mom things as you read this. 🙂

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but where I live in the Bay Area, you’ll often see lots of wildlife roaming about. Case in point, I was coming back from lunch the other day and saw this very pretty deer on campus having a snack near a cluster of classrooms. I’ve seen her a couple times and have named her Jasmine because apparently what I do is name all the animals I happen to stumble onto.

Oh, and another thing that I do is get endless amusement from hyphens. This post from Merriam-Webster made me laugh so hard!

Anywho, I have to now attend to Connor’s high pony and red matte lipstick. Sometimes I wonder if spending the bulk of my young adult life beauty blogging specifically prepared me for getting this little lady ready for dance performances. 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your Saturday, and take it easy, lemon squeez-y.

This week’s reading

  • “The first time someone did my makeup for me, I was in seventh grade. My best friend at the time had started experimenting with makeup, and I thought she looked beautiful. I thought I would too. But when she added her finishing touches to me, and I looked in the mirror, I didn’t love what I saw.” <----I quite enjoyed this piece.
  • I’m not surprised the Curel Cleansing Oil is at the top of this list of best cleansing oils. It’s a beast! I just wish it was easier to find in stores, sigh.
  • “Sometimes I think a good scent is like receiving an invitation to a party—the more enticing the smell, the more flamboyant the promise, and the more excited I am to go wherever that journey will take me. And nowhere was that more true than in Mexico City.”
  • Kate Moss is launching a beauty line.
  • Nissan made a perfume that smells like tires and cherry blossoms.
  • “Close your eyes and imagine a silk veil moving and flowing around you. It’s cocooning rather than suffocating, gently caressing your skin, the feeling comforting your mind and body. That epitomises skin scents – intimate, barely there, elusive and the latest wave in perfumery that we can’t get enough of.”

So much YES

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 605

May 3rd, 2020 by Karen 6 Comments

May Day (May 1st) is also known as Lei Day in Hawaii, and it’s a statewide celebration of the aloha spirit and the giving of the flower lei. No matter which day of the week May 1st falls on, the Lei Day Celebration takes place at Queen Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. The annual event features live music, a stunning lei contest exhibit, hula performances, demonstrations, craft and food vendors, and so much more!

Tabs LOVED Lei Day (obvs), and he was a huge horticulturalist. Straight up, he was a fiend for flowers, especially of the edible variety.

No matter what he was doing or where he was, Tabs wore a lei every May 1st. He loved holidays that allowed him to flex his creative muscles.

I Hauled These Two Victoria’s Secret Scents to Keep Mosquitoes Away From Me

August 15th, 2019 by Karen 19 Comments

victorias secret amber romance
When your beauty decisions are motivated by insects ravaging you at night…

This may look like your standard-issue “Oh, there’s a two-for-one body splash sale at Victoria’s Secret, so lemme go hook that up” kind of haul.

Totally not.

Instead of being motivated by a good deal (which is my usual motivation for spur-of-the-moment beauty buys), this purchase was brought on by tiny monsters.

Specifically, flying insects.

Specifically, insects that buzz around your house and sink their proboscis into your unsuspecting flesh in the middle of the night. I’ve been getting devoured by what I think are mosquitoes…

THANK GOD. And I say that because for a while there I thought they might be bed bugs. But now I’m pretty sure they’re mosquitoes.

I think it’s because the contractors who replaced our furnace, water heater and AC left the front door open the whole day they were here. Consequently, a gaggle of mosquitoes came into my house, and they’ve been biting me at night.

I’ve got bites around my ankles, on my feet (Fun fact: Mosquitoes love the scent of feet.), on my back, my tummy, on the backs of my shoulders… I’ve been very itchy, and it hasn’t been fun.

A few days ago, I started using a real-deal mosquito repellent containing picaridin at night, and it keeps them away for 14 hours. It’s helped a ton — no new bites! — but in the process of researching how to make yourself less appealing/more disgusting to the little monsters, I stumbled upon a treasure trove of information about two Victoria’s Secret scents that allegedly repel bugs.

People talk about this stuff as if it’s manna from heaven as far as keeping bugs away, and fisherman and deep-sea researchers go on and on about it. It’s Victoria’s Secret Amber Romance, and it’s supposed to be the bee’s knees at keeping gnats, mosquitoes and other flying insects away. Even the dudes on the Louisiana State Baseball team swear by it!

BECCA Lush Lip Colour Balm for Build-Able Rich Browns and Burgundies

August 14th, 2017 by Karen 12 Comments

becca lush lip colour balm
The BECCA Lush Lip Colour Balms ($22 each, available now at Ulta)

Reading the names of the colors for the new BECCA Lip Colour Balms is like reading the menu at a hip neighborhood coffee shop.

There’s a Chai Crème, a Cherry Ganache, Café au Lait, Almond Fraise and a few others…YUM! “Yeah, can I please get a medium Toasted Hazelnut with 2% and no foam?”

Never been a fan of the foam…

Which reminds me, I found THE BEST coffee drink on planet Earth about a month ago. Problem is, it was two hours away, GAHHHH! But more on that in a few.

Look and feel like the Chanel Rouge Cocos

The BECCA Lush Lip Colour Balms are Ulta exclusives available now for $22 in the permanent line. They’re incredibly lightweight, hella hydrating, highly pigmented nude lip balms that won’t last long on your lips. I get about two hours at the most.

There are eight sheer shades, and you can build them up to medium coverage. For me they fall smack dab in the “shiny but not too shiny” category, a la the Chanel Rouge Cocos.

Nudes for all skin tones

I like that there are some rich browns and burgundies among them (good nude options for deeper skin tones), so they aren’t all just standard pale pinks and beige. BECCA has always been great about including shades for a wide range of skin tones, and they’re keeping it up here.

But do they taste like coffee?

I expected they might based on the shade names (which would be SO next level!), but alas, they don’t.

They taste a little like vanilla. Maybe. If I close my eyes and think about it, LOL!

Chai Creme, the one closest to my natural lip color, has been chillin’ in my purse for the past two weeks, except when it isn’t because I’ve swapped it out for Ginger Vanille or Cafe Milk Chocolate. I dig that I can slick any of them on my lips without needing a mirror.

I’m diggin’ these darker nudes

They’re low-maintenance, and you can still dial up the intensity by adding an extra layer or two. Recommended if you like moisturizing lip colors but refuse to deal with drama!
