The 2011 Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sign Project and Giveaway

October 1st, 2011 by Karen 197 Comments

  • WINNER: Drum roll, please… Patti! Congratulations, you’re the winner of more than $1,000 in makeup from MAC, Make Up For Ever, Clinique, Estee Lauder and Bobbi Brown. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share a sign this year. Hopefully someday soon, a cure will change the meaning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month for people around the world.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness MonthHey, friend. I’ve been sitting here for the past half an hour trying to figure out how to put my feelings into words. I write a sentence, then cross it out, write a sentence, cross it out.

I can’t think of a more elegant way to say it, so I’m just gonna say it…

You and I have been together for a really long time. Going on five years now, which is like 20 years in Internet time, and I think of you like a sister. Sure, we don’t fight over who got to wear that oversized Esprit sweater to the dance or argue about who got to use the car last Friday night, but watching you move about your life and just chatting about whatever — the books we’re reading, the food we’re eating, the makeup we’re lemming, the pets we’re loving — I feel like we’ve become a part of each other’s lives.

And just as there are defining moments that bring family members closer together, I think The Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sign Project we started last year did that for us.

Many of us reading right now have been affected by this dreadful disease, and I hope we stand together again this year to show our support for our sisters, our mothers and our friends. It’s such a small gesture, really, but I hope that in some small way the good wishes we send out into the universe help someone through a difficult time.

I’ve run donations for breast cancer charities in the past, and I encourage you to also support the cause that way if you’re able to, but I know that you’ll have many opportunities to give and show financial support on other sites this month. What we’re doing here this month is about increasing awareness, showing support and standing with solidarity — like a psychic hug and a hand squeeze — to the men (yes, men), women and families facing this disease.

Join me this Breast Cancer Awareness Month by taking a picture of yourself with a sign like the one at the top of this post, and you’ll be entered to win a prize package worth more than $1,000 in makeup and beauty products provided by MAC, Clinique, Make Up For Ever, Estée Lauder and Bobbi Brown. It can be a large sign or a small sign, like on a Post-It, or a camera phone pic of yourself with your sign written on your arm.

For this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sign Project, so many great sponsors stepped up to the plate. I can’t thank the wonderful people at MAC, Clinique, Make Up For Ever, Estée Lauder and Bobbi Brown enough for their generosity. If you’d like to know more about what a few of these brands are up to this year for BCA, check out BCAcampaign.com.

One (1) lucky lady or gentleman will win an epic package of prizes provided by MAC, Clinique, Make Up For Ever, Estée Lauder and Bobbi Brown (a $1,126 value).

Despite Our Differences (in Color Temp), I’m Warming Up to the MAC Me Over Collection’s Lady Grey Quad

August 29th, 2011 by Karen 23 Comments

mac me over lady grey

One of my favorite pieces from the new MAC Me Over collection (on counters now) turned out to be something I never expected to like.

“How cool!” I said the first time I spotted the Lady Grey quad’s greenish gray, and I meant it both in terms of wow factor, as I thought the shade was subtle, but interesting and different, and color temp, because like many of the other colors in Icelandic Cool, the sub-collection to which Lady Grey belongs, it leans cool.

Right away the color, and the other shades of green, gray, beige, white, taupe and purple that comprise Icelandic Cool, melted my heart, but I thought I’d have a difficult time getting the cool-toned shade to cooperate with my warm-toned skin.

Still, it didn’t stop me from trying.

5 Ways to S t r e t c h Your Beauty Dollars

July 5th, 2010 by Karen 24 Comments

Written by !i$@ bee

To help gals get more bang for their bucks, blogger !i$@ bee shares 5 ways to s t r e t c h those beauty dollars.

5 ways to stretch your beauty dollars

Hey there, lovelies! I know many of you are curious as to how far you can make your precious, hard-earned money go when it comes to makeup. Too many times I’ve seen friends drop money on a product they could probably duplicate with something they already have in their current makeup stash. Well, fret no more, because !i$@ bee is here to drop some knowledge on ya.

1. Double and triple duty products

I never understood why someone would buy two products — say, a brow filler and a brow-colored eyeshadow — when one might do. Not only can you use eyeshadows as brow fillers and eyeliners (if you wet them first and apply with an eyeliner brush), you can also use your lipsticks as blushes and your blushes as eyeshadows. It may not work with all formulas, so check ingredients and packaging instructions first, but where it does work it can save a lot.

2. Palettes

Palettes are a great way to not only store your makeup, but also to experiment with multiple eye colors for a fraction of the cost of buying products separately. There was a MAC shadow I’d been eyeing (no pun intended), but I wasn’t sure if the color would complement my skin tone, so I headed to my nearest discount beauty store, where they offered a similar color and seven others (!!!) in palette form. Not only was I able to test-drive the color I wanted, I was also able to experiment with some new looks thanks to the additional shades. All for less than the price of a single MAC shadow I may or may not have liked. Sweet!

3. Eyeshadow base

As a relative noob to this whole makeup thing, I didn’t have a collection of eyeshadow bases to keep my shadow in place during the day. In a pinch, I’d just use concealer as a base and continue on with my shadow application. Since then, I’ve discovered the wonders of a proper base, specifically NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils. These really make my shadow colors pop and wear longer, and depending on the base + shadow combo, allow me to create some new colors.

Another great thing about NYX Pencils: the price. You can find them online or sometimes in beauty stores for $5 or less. Not bad for such a versatile product!

Nude Lips and New York Fashion Week

February 19th, 2009 by Karen 32 Comments

While models dressed up for Fashion Week, their lips dressed down, as several designers sent nude lips down the catwalk. Peach, pink and even beige lip shades ruled the runway in finishes of matte and high gloss.

What we see at Bryant Park can signal upcoming trends, like nude lips for fall 2009, but I think the look’s perennial. Go Team Nudes!

I’ve been spotting examples of it all week long… Here are some ideas to try at home.

At the Oscar de la Renta show (pictured at top), the lips were natural, pink and glossy.

For lips inspired by the same look, start by lining your pucker with MAC Cremestick Liner in Pink Treat, a creamy warm rose. Then, add one layer of a pale, shimmery beige lipstick — I used MAC lipstick in Quiet, Please.

For more glossy shine, top it off with pink and shimmery MAC Lipglass in Cherry Blossom.

The lips at the Narciso Rodriguez show were all about the matte, peach and nude.

I like this one because it’s pretty easy. Apply one layer of warm and peachy MAC Mattene lipstick in Flattering (a matte lipstick), applied straight from the tube.

My favorite nude lips at Bryant Park this week have been the peachy, glossy lips at the Anna Sui show.

Begin by lining your lips with MAC Cremestick liner in Honey B., a creamy peach.

Then, layer shimmery peach Benefit Full Finish Lipstick in Thrillin’ Brazillian directly on top.

Finish with some clear gloss, like (try MAC Lipglass in Clear), slicked over the whole lip.

I think nude lips look fantastic with pretty much any eye look, but they look exceptionally stunning when paired with smokey eyes (click for a simple smokey eye).

Tea and crumpets

A peek inside Crown & Crumpet

The sun is making an unscheduled appearance today, yea! This, after more than a week of gloom and rain, so I’m playing hooky to meet a friend for tea and crustless finger sandwiches in San Francisco this afternoon. 🙂

I hope you’re having good day so far. Let me know how you’ve been.

Your neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

MAC Infatuating Rose Face of the Day: Pink with Indigo Liner

December 9th, 2008 by Karen 41 Comments

OMG! I forgot to mention the minor traumatic incident I had this morning while I was doing my hair — I found a gray hair that looked exactly like a crunchy cellophane noodle.

I kid you not. It was all dry and twisty… UGH!

Everyone in my family goes gray early (I’ve been getting gray hairs since my teens), but this was the first time I’d ever found one of these. How precious.

After plucking it out, I flailed about the bedroom for a few minutes, desperately searching for something to help me forget what had happened.

And that’s when I thought of MAC. I decided to do this playful pink and purple eye with eyeshadows from the MAC Cosmetics Infatuating Rose: 6 Cool Eyes palette ($38).

Lip Look: Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Bamboo Pink

April 18th, 2008 by Karen 24 Comments

clinique-bamboo-pink-2

One day about a week ago I set out to find Clinique’s new Long Last Glosswear SPF in Bamboo Pink. On my mission, I trekked to three different Clinique counters in downtown San Francisco (in three-inch heels), but it was nowhere to be found. “I’m sorry, dear,” the sales associates said. “It’s sold out.”

Never one to give up easily, I finally got my hands on Clinique’s little beast a few days ago (yay!). It didn’t take long at all to see why it has been so hard to keep in stock — it’s *gorgeous!*

Clinique has a winner on its hands. Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Bamboo Pink is a cool-toned pink with silver shimmer, and it’s a perfect, wearable shade for days when you just want a lil’ somethin-somethin on your lips but aren’t in the mood to spend too much time on your look.

For the picture above, I paired it with Bamboo Pink Long Last Shine Lipstick.
