‘Tis the Season for Red, Green and Gold: The China Glaze Holiday 2010 Nail Polishes

October 15th, 2010 by Karen 17 Comments

china glaze holiday 2010 swatches

‘Tis the season, lacquer lover! Soon we’ll be hearing the Sound of Music on the tube, watching Uncle Erwin overdo the eggnog and getting packages of granny panties stuffed in our stockings from mom (yep, that has happened to me).

In the beauty world, ’tis also the season for red, green, silver and gold — like the colors in the new 16-piece China Glaze Tis the Season to Be Naughty and Nice Holiday Collection.

With so much variety among the shades (about $6 each) and textures, there should be enough here to satisfy those seasonal color cravings.

I haven’t finished testing these for durability and wear time yet, but if they’re anything like the China Glaze polishes I’ve worn before, and I see know reason to suspect otherwise, they should last about 10 days on nails with the help of a base coat (with minimal chipping).

The limited edition collection lives in beauty stores now, and like all of China Glaze’s nail polishes, these are also DBP-, toluene- and formaldehyde-free.

China Glaze starts the party with a couple of really fun reds. Phat Santa and Ruby Deer look almost alike in their bottles, but they come into their own on nails. Phat Santa looks a smidge darker than vibrant Ruby does to me.

Red also makes sparkly appearances in Party Hearty (green, gold and red glitter in a clear base) and Mrs. Claus (red glitter in a red tinted jelly base). If you’re a fan of Lippmann’s glitter polishes, these might be worth a peek (they’re also $6 vs. $18 for the ones from Lippmann).

China Glaze Fight Like a Woman Collection Swatches and Thoughts

July 17th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

china glaze fight like a woman swatches reviews photos

Rise and shine, pal o’ mine. Got a few more nail swatches for ya. These are from the upcoming China Glaze Fight Like a Woman collection ($6 each), which sashays onto shelves this September, just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month a few days later.

A portion of each sale goes to benefit the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization devoted to the science of cancer and to promoting better collaboration between international organizations working on cancer research.

Endurance is the shade that REALLY catches my eye… It’s the raspberry pink with silver micro-glitter, but let me know which color you like most in the comments.

Endurance

Creamy Empowerment (the mid-tone pink) is a little thicker than I expected it to be and takes some patience to apply, but it comes out pretty if I take my time and use thin coats. The other two shades are maybe a tad easier to work with.

China Glaze Awakening Collection: Nails to Drive the Ghouls Crazy for Fall 2010

July 16th, 2010 by Karen 29 Comments

China Glaze Awakening

What it do, ghoul-friend? I’m guessing I’m probably not alone in feeling like Halloween’s about a billion light years away right now, but if you’re one of those always-planning-early types (or maybe every day feels like All Hallows’ Eve to you?), peep the three new colors of China Glaze’s upcoming Awakening collection.

Color me a kid from the ’80s, but dayum these colors remind me of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. I was eight years old the first time I saw it and got zilch sleep for two weeks. Every time I’d close my eyes I’d see MJ’s glistening in the dark.

Zombie Zest, a dark green jelly base packed with green and gold glitter and my favorite color out of the three, looks like a nail polish version of those haunting peepers. Childhood scarring aside, I think it also looks kinda like sparkly baby poo. Both describe the color equally well.

The other two shades, Ick-a-body (a brownish green jelly base with burnt orange glitter) and Mummy May I (a purplish black jelly with purple glitter), are a lot of fun, too, especially if you like monstrous colors.

In each of these pics I’m wearing three coats.

I’ve Got Bette Davis Eyes for These China Glaze Vintage Vixen Nail Lacquers for Fall 2010

May 14th, 2010 by Karen 54 Comments

China Glaze Vintage Vixen

China Glaze Vintage Vixen

Have I ever told you about my obsession with 1940s style? Yup, ever since high school. For a time I was actually dressing the part, too, like I was an extra in Swing Kids, wearing Veronica Lake waves, red lips, fishnet stockings — the whole shebang.

Now I’m more of a tank tops and jeans kinda girl, but I still get my ’40s fix any way I can. China Glaze’s new Vintage Vixen collection helps.

China Glaze Vintage Vixen

Arriving July 6 for about $5 each, the 12 dark fall greens, burgundies, blues, taupes and silvers (NOTE: Fall? Can you say early much?! ) evoke ’40s film noir with a modern day twist.

China Glaze Vintage Vixen

Sparkle’s a key player in this drama, as the entire cast of characters features some kind of light-catching finish, ranging from micro-glitters to frosts to shimmers. It’s been a recurring theme for China Glaze’s fall collections, with both of the previous two, Retro Diva and Rodeo Diva, doing something similar.

But where Retro and Rodeo crafted a more playful, whimsical tale, Vintage Vixen’s darker story feels more like pulp fiction in paint. I like it, though (if I put my mind that far ahead in time), and feel like it’s right on point for fall.

Lightening Up with the China Glaze Up and Away Collection

December 5th, 2009 by Karen 28 Comments

china glaze up and away spring 2010 top

The first time I read the name on the bottom of the pastel yellow bottle in China Glaze’s Up and Away Spring 2010 collection, I was TOTALLY SURE it said Lemon Liz — named, I assumed, after Tina Fey’s character on 30 Rock.

I thought, “How cool,” smiling gleefully. 🙂 “They watch 30 Rock!”

And then I looked again: “Lemon Fizz”

Oh, how ’bout that… Lemon Fizz. Yeah, I guess someone needs to get her eyes checked, LOL!

The shiny-happy mix of creamy brights and pastels in China Glaze’s new collection look like the colors from a Deee-Lite video.

So playful and girly! 🙂

Most of the 12 apply smooth with full coverage. The two that didn’t for me (the lighter shades) — Something Sweet and Light as Air — gave me some trubs in the streaking department, but I still like the colors.

Like all China Glaze lacquers, these are free of DBP, toluene and formaldehyde, and they’re expected to grace Sally Beauty Supply stores this spring. As soon as I see them available anywhere online, I’ll let you know.

What do you think? Are these tres Deee Lite or what?

China Glaze Retro Diva Nail Polishes for Fall 2009

June 19th, 2009 by Karen 42 Comments

china glaze retro diva all

I’m sitting here on the living room floor watching The Deep End on IFC and trying to decide on a polish to wear for my Friday night manicure. I’d like it to be something from China Glaze’s new Retro Diva collection.

Out next month, the collection features 12 groovy polishes (about $5/bottle) in shades of purple, burgundy, orange, red and taupe. China Glaze says the colors were inspired by platform shoes, hiphuggers and the rockin’ disco 1970s.

For a look at the 2010 fall collection…
  • China Glaze Vintage Vixen
  • When I think ’70s colors, I think pea green drapes and mustard yellow shag carpeting, but whatev. 🙂

China Glaze Kicks Collection: Memoirs of a Shoe Addict (Part Deux)

    April 22nd, 2009 by Karen 23 Comments

If I don’t get my hands on some Skittles soon, I just might devour my nails, LOL! That’s because they look delicious all painted in fruit candy colors, courtesy of China Glaze Kicks.

Each of these six pink, orange and red nail polishes ($3 each; full collection contains 12 shades) looks good enough to eat — just like the first batch of colors did.

For a look at the 2010 fall collection…
  • China Glaze Vintage Vixen
  • The 12-piece collection was inspired by brightly colored tennis shoes, and being a footwear enthusiast (aka I have a shoe obsession, but it isn’t pervy, I swear), I lurve this collection somethin’ fierce!

Which China Glaze Rodeo Diva Shade Do You Like Best?

    October 21st, 2008 by Karen 35 Comments

Giddyup, girl! I always wanted to be a cowgirl, ropin’ steers and such and whatnot … but growing up in the suburbs and listening to Public Enemy didn’t lend themselves to the fulfillment of this dream. I’ve never even ridden a horse.

That said, I can still get my fingers and toes ready for the rodeo with China Glaze’s Rodeo Diva nail polish collection, my favorite China Glaze release of the year.

I found the China Glaze Rodeo Diva collection online for $2.68 per bottle.

I think these dark colors are perfect for fall, yet they pack enough shimmer to make ’em fun and spunky at the same time. The shades aren’t as bold as previous releases like Ink, 2BHAWT and 2BKEWL, and I’m glad to see China Glaze is keeping things interesting.

Six of the 12 shades from the Rodeo Diva release…

Which of these China Glaze Rodeo Diva shades do you like best?
