China Glaze Thinks We Should Let It Snow

October 17th, 2011 by Karen 56 Comments

china glaze let it snow

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but China Glaze is so delightful. And since we’ve no place to go, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! 🙂

You’ll have to set down that Halloween candy corn for a minute, though, but don’t worry. I have a holiday candy cane and a cup of eggnog for you instead. Yes, it’s time for another holiday collection, and this one’s from China Glaze.

Even though winter is still months away, I say Let It Snow — as in the new 12-piece collection of festive polishes coming soon from China Glaze (about $6 each).

I’m wearing two layers in each of the swatches below. Have a quick look, and let me know if any of the colors ring your bell.

The China Glaze Let It Snow Collection

  • Poinsettia — A creamy ruby red
  • Ring In The Red — The holidays wouldn’t be complete without at least one glittering red polish
  • Winter Berry — A creamy cranberry red (perfect for sipping hot cocoa by the fire)
  • Velvet Bow — A rich, creamy red inspired by red wine
  • Glittering Garland — A dazzling glittery green the color of pine trees and mistletoe
  • Holly-Day — A rich hunter green sans sparkle
  • Champagne Bubbles — A sophisticated metallic gold with golden shimmer
  • Twinkle Lights — A mix of glittery shades that twinkle like tree lights
  • Snow Globe — A frosty white with flecks of snow
  • Icicle — A shimmery silver with a flash of ice
  • Tinsel Town — A metallic silver glitter perfect for a night on the town
  • Blue Year’s Eve — A lustrous, shimmering blue to ring in the new year

What to Wear with Fall’s Trendy Teals: 5 Mani/Pedi Pairings for Teal Fingers or Toes

September 10th, 2011 by Karen 25 Comments

It seems like everywhere I turn lately, I keep running into teal, like over at the YSL counter a few weeks ago, when I bumped into La Laque Nail Laquer Wintergreen ($20), a deep, dark creamy greenish blue from the new Midnight Garden collection (I snagged the last bottle, yay!).

And last weekend at Sephora, I spotted a bottle of shimmery green Tempted by Teal ($9.50) from about 20 feet away…

Okay, 10 feet, give or take, but I bet I would have also seen it from 20. 🙂

It hails from the new Sephora By OPI Garden of Good & Evil collection.

My latest teal crush comes all the way from outer space (by way of Southern California). It’s this kickin’ little bottle from Urban Decay’s new nail kit called Mars.

Dontcha just love the little flecks of silver glitter? They’re like stars. Mars and stars…

Of course, as much as I like teal, and other colors, for that matter, I’m a die-hard mixed mani/pedi girl at heart. I have trouble committing to any one color on all 10 fingers and toes (it’s one of my many beauty quirks), so I’ve been compiling a list of potential fall colors to pair with teal in my mani/pedi combos.

Colors like…

1. Creamy dark purple

Green Day

How do you feel about green nail polish?

I love it. Of the nontraditional colors, it’s probably my fave.

Yes, I’ll Take a Ticket to Ride the China Glaze Metro Collection This Fall

July 14th, 2011 by Karen 44 Comments

china glaze metro collection

When I close my eyes and quiet my mind, I see my city self…

Even from all the way up here, 40 stories above the street below, I can hear the hustle and bustle of urban life. There’s a distant car alarm whirring like a warbler, its peal rising up through the concrete canyons to my ears. Closer, the throttle of a bus engine opens as it pulls away from a curb, and cars carry on conversations with beeps instead of words.

I’m sitting at my desk typing beneath a huge window that almost covers one entire wall of my high-rise apartment in the sky (thankfully, in a neighborhood beyond the reach of the fog). From my desk, the window looks like a large blue painting to my eye. When I get up from my chair, walk over to the window and look down…

I’m back in Novato again, standing in front of my window at home, the sounds of traffic replaced by the distant buzz of weed whackers and the unmistakable cawing of a crow (yes, we can all hear you, bird!). I look down a few feet to the familiar golden hillside of dry grass outside. A gang of wild turkeys (dayum, those things are hella ugly!) is slowly scouring the base of a tall oak tree I can almost touch, its branches rising well above the top of the condominium complex.

Ah, the charms of small-town life! 🙂

If you long for the concrete catwalks and sidewalks of your favorite gritty city, you might like the new China Glaze Metro Collection (about $5 per bottle), coming this fall.

The new 12-piece collection of polishes features a mix of mostly desaturated blue, purple, raspberry, red, burgundy, terracotta, beige, gray, green and Dijon for uptown girls and downtown darlings.

I’ve always admired the way China Glaze takes chances with greens and yellows, and there are a couple of interesting ones here. Sometimes, they can look a little too baby poo-ish/Hot Topic for me, but I think both are very refined this time.

Trendsetter, a mustard yellow, looks elegant with its gorgeous golden shimmer, and I think Westside Warrior, a creamy camo green, would have looked right at home in last year’s Chanel Khaki Collection. It seems much more expensive than $5 to me.
