MAC Blot Powder/Pressed: A Plot Against Oil and Shine!

September 29th, 2010 by Karen 82 Comments

What’s up, friend? This post is getting to you kinda late, I know, and I’m sorry. Long story short, but my flight was delayed out of Milan yesterday. Consequently, I almost missed the connecting flight out of Germany to get back home (NOTE: If you’re the person I steamrolled in the international terminal of the Frankfurt airport yesterday…my bad!).

I managed to make the flight (YEA!), but my luggage didn’t (BOO!). And, of course, it contained all of the makeup I was hoping to dish about today — stuff from Dolce & Gabbana Holiday, Kiko, Madina and a brand called Fred Farrugia.

Thankfully, the airline emailed to say they found the bag and put it on the first train plane home.

Oh, I have some important news to share! But you have to promise to keep it quiet because I haven’t told El Hub (pinky swear). You see, while I was on the road last weekend, I rekindled an old flame.

Yup, MAC Blot Powder/Pressed ($22) and I have been seeing each other off and on for the past six years (he absorbs the oil on my face in ways that El Hub just can’t!), but this trip convinced me to take our relationship to the next level.

Blot was the only powder I took with me, and it’s official: I’m (still) in love. love

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer Is Catching Up to TimeBalm in the Polls

September 23rd, 2010 by Karen 49 Comments

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer Review final

So it’s election season again, and today I got one of those annoying robocalls that went a little something like this:

“Hello,” it began, “my name is MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, and I approve this message.”

“Uh… Hello?”

“The following is an automated poll with important questions about the upcoming election for mayor of your makeup bag.”

“What? Oh, I hate these things…”

“If you were to learn that my opponent, theBalm’s timeBalm concealer, was not the best thing to happen to womankind since men started waxing their butts and back, would you…

A. Immediately hang up.

B. Exclaim, “No way! I don’t believe it!” into the phone and run screaming naked out of the house.

C. Answer, “Really? Tell me more.”

D. None of the above.

“C.”

Truth is, I’ve been a big supporter of timeBalm concealer ($18), but MAC’s new line of medium-to-full coverage matte liquid concealers just might sway my vote. 🙂

MAC created them to conceal dark circles, spots and discolorations with a long-wearing, flawless, natural-looking finish.

The 16 available shades ($16.50 each), which come in a small glass bottle with a pump applicator top, dropped on counters last week with two other products, the Pro Longwear Lipcreme Lipsticks ($16) and Pro Longwear SPF10 Foundations ($29.50).

In a nutshell, this stuff works like a liquid version of timeBalm (I like it more than the actual liquid version of timeBalm). I’ve been wearing it in NW 30 lately (for reference, I’m an NC 35), to cover up my under-eye circles, and like timeBalm it thoroughly blocks out the dark areas without creasing, feathering, fading or settling into my fine lines.

MAC Venomous Villains: A Dr. Facilier Face of the Day with Magically Cool Liquid Powder in Cajun

September 16th, 2010 by Karen 30 Comments

Don’t tell Tabs (shh!), but I managed to sneak in a little pre-weekend playtime at lunch today (my original plan was to hit up the Whole Foods salad bar, but I fed a different hunger instead) with more devious delectables from the upcoming MAC Venomous Villains collection.

I thought it might be fun to take Magically Cool Liquid Powder in Cajun out for a spin, so I grabbed it and a few other goodies from Dr. Facilier’s color story and put them to work.

MAC Venomous Villains: Smokey Eyes with the Mineralize Eye Shadow in She Who Dares

September 15th, 2010 by Karen 86 Comments

MAC Venomous Villains

How the heck did this happen? Someone tell me, please. Heads are gonna roll! How did we get halfway through September so fast? I demand an answer! 🙂

Before you know it, it’ll be fall, then winter, then FLASH! — it’s 2049 and I’m retiring from the blog to live out my golden years in Boca with my harem of cats!

God help me…

But maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. Maybe I should just try and focus on the good things about the end of this month, like the upcoming release of MAC Venomous Villains and how much I love Mineralize Eyeshadow duo in She Who Dares ($21).

Mineralize Eyeshadow in She Who Dares

I think I might even like She Who Dares more than I like to shave my big toe, which is oddly, a lot. 🙂 One of two Mineralize Eyeshadows in the Maleficent color story (the other being My Dark Magic), it makes short work of smokey eyes.

On one side of She Who Dares, a blackish myrtle with flecks of green glitter; on the other, a blackish sapphire with flecks of blue glitter. Both are quite sheer in pigmentation (semi-transparent), which I like with colors this dark because it makes it easier to find my sweet spot building the colors with layers.

Speaking of that, I think both sides of the duo are exceptionally easy to work with. Even on sooty smokey eyes, they don’t look crazy heavy.

MAC Venomous Villains: A De Vil-ish Face of the Day

September 9th, 2010 by Karen 57 Comments

WOW! Where does the time go? Today it occurred to me that the MAC Venomous Villains collection’s just a hop, skip and a jump away (September 30).

Can I get a WOOT, WOOT! (and an evil cackle) from all the MAC-aholics in the hood? 😀

The collection, a collaboration between Disney and MAC, features four separate color stories, each one based on a different Disney villain — Cruella de Vil, of 101 Dalmatians fame; Maleficent, from Sleeping Beauty; the Evil Queen, scourge of Snow White; and Dr. Facilier, from The Princess and the Frog (find out more about the whole collection here).

Despite the subject matter and cartoon imagery, these Trix aren’t for kids. The colors are decidedly grown up, and the products MAC caliber through and through.

Today I took Cruella’s color story out for a spin with a softened version of a classic black cat eye and paired it with rosy cheeks and a glossy red lip.

A MAC Fabulous Felines Face of the Day: Burmese Beauty or Cat Diva?

September 2nd, 2010 by Karen 38 Comments

mac fabulous felines burmese beauty

Today I spent half the afternoon massaging a cat’s ego. Get this: Tabs thinks he was the inspiration behind the MAC Fabulous Felines Burmese Beauty color story.

He even had me type a letter to MAC corporate… Apparently, he knows someone in the Makeup Artistry Division.

Dear Snowflake:

I still have not received the royalty check you promised for the use of my likeness in the MAC Fabulous Felines campaign.

I understand if it was just a simple oversight. These things happen, but I would like to avoid litigation, if possible, and would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Tabs, esquire

I told him that I thought MAC probably just had Burmese cats in mind, but he smells a conspiracy. At one point in our argument today he twitched his tail, drew out his claws and told me to “talk to the paw.”

A MAC Fabulous Felines Face of the Day: A Russian Blue on Brown Eyes

September 1st, 2010 by Karen 43 Comments

mac fabulous felines palace pedigreed fotd

Vets say he’s an American Shorthair, the cat-chall breed for kitties of questionable lineage (the miscellaneous cat-egory of the kitty world, if you will).

And I’d always figured Tabs was cool with being called an American Shorthair, but ever since the arrival of MAC’s Fabulous Felines, I’ve been finding evidence to the contrary — posters of exotic purebreds on the wall, copies of Cat Fancy around the house, and his diary left open to a page in which he referred to himself as an “Egyptian Mau/Ragdoll/Toyger hybrid.”

Yeah…whatever, dude. 🙂

It’s probably just a minor identity crisis brought on by the Palace Pedigreed color story, which he says he likes because it makes him “feel fancy,” and who could blame him? I like it too, especially the plums and blues.

Up until a few years ago, I was terrified of getting either color anywhere near my brown eyes.

Now, I’m hooked!

I tried to make blue eyeliner the focal point of my look today, and here’s what I came up with…

A MAC Fabulous Felines Face of the Day: Cat Eyes with a Golden Twist

August 31st, 2010 by Karen 65 Comments

mac fabulous felines leopard luxe fotd

Tabs has been bugging me to incorporate his MAC Leopard Luxe goodies into a look. It’s his favorite one of the Fabulous Felines color stories, and he’s been going on and on about its warm gold, brown, peach and black shades. Today he said of the colors, “Meow, mrow mrroww ft ft,” to which I think everyone agrees. 🙂

Just because a look utilizes neutrals doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Take the standard cat eye, for example. They’re often done with black liners or other dark neutrals, and today I tried mine with a twist — a shimmery golden liquid eyeliner along the lashline. I wanted to spice up the look with glitter without going full-on disco.
