MAC Unsung Heroes: Viva Glam VI Lipglass

April 27th, 2012 by Karen 19 Comments

MAC viva glam VI lipglass

Hello, glitter! This way to Sparkle Central. Just a heads up, but Viva Glam VI Lipglass is all about glitter, so if you’re averse to getting glitter on the mattress, glitter on the highway, glitter on the front porch, glitter on the hallway, you probably won’t love (shack) this, baby!

Oh, and another thing — have I mentioned the glitter? Because this Viva Glam has loads of it. 🙂

As a member of the MAC Viva Glam family, 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of VI go to support the MAC AIDS Fund, which helps women, children and men living with HIV/AIDS.

In true Viva Glam fashion, warm, plummy VI gets along with with most everyone, but I think it looks particularly fetching on girls with skin tones from NC and NW 40 and up; something about it just werks on skin tones from medium to dark.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Breezy Sheertone Shimmer Blush

April 26th, 2012 by Karen 16 Comments

MAC breezy blush

Oh, MAC Breezy Sheertone Shimmer Blush ($20), you’re just so…breezy.

Breezy. That’s been a very popular word around the beauty-sphere as of late. It’s funny how certain words and phrases ebb and flown, isn’t it? One week it’s glow; then it’s sheer. Or shimmery — that’s a word that never seems to go out of style.

This here Breezy also shimmers, and I can safely say that I don’t have anything else quite like it in my makeup collection.

It looks mad scary in the pan, ma! And it’s also a little easy to over-apply, at least for me, but the MAC Skunk brush hits the sweet spot, delivering a beautiful, multi-faceted flush one step above light.

MAC characterizes it as a plum with pearl, but oh! — it’s so much more than that. It’s almost like a mash-up of all my favorite blush colors in a single, opalescent pan. One minute, Breezy’s a berry, and then a rose, a pink and plum, and the dewy, golden shimmer gives it an ethereal dimension.

Breezy also loves different lip colors and skin tones (oh, and I think redheads can really rock it well). I like to pair it with berries, roses, pinks and almost anything with a hint of golden shimmer, and I think it looks great on NC and NW gals in shades from light to dark.

Lighter lovelies may want to use a light hand to apply it because Breezy is easy to go overboard with (it’s very pigmented).

One of my favorite ways to wear Breezy is to make it the focus of my look. Just like a smokey eye or a bright red lip can be the focal point of a look, Breezy makes a big, bold statement on cheeks.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Care Blends Essential Oils, Grapefruit + Chamomile

April 23rd, 2012 by Karen 30 Comments

mac care blends essential oils

You know what they say. The squeaky wheel gets the…soothing essence of grapefruit and chamomile in a base of botanical oils. 🙂 That’s today’s Unsung Hero, MAC Care Blends Essential Oils in Grapefruit + Chamomile.

Pretty good on its own as a soothing super moisturizer, this $19.50 potion is even more potent when mixed, like with concealers, for the ultimate in dark-circle destruction. Combined with MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, for instance, which I already love, the mixture is like Hogwarts’ magic.

Playing Elliott Stabler to Pro Longwear’s Olivia Benson, Grapefruit + Chamomile makes the duo greater than the sum of its parts. The two products have such great chemistry together that now, when I use them individually, I feel like something’s missing.

So the Care Blends? — they’ve been around the block as limited edition products in other collections, like 2010’s Warm & Cozy, and I remember mixing the Sweet Orange + Lavender one into my hand cream and liking it back then, but now the Grapefruit + Chamomile version has a spot in the permanent line.

MAC Pro Artist Louise Z is the person who convinced me to give the Care Blends a try last summer when she raved about how it performed when she mixed it with under-eye concealer for a shoot she did with the Oakland Raiders cheerleaders. I thought, “If it’s good enough for the Raiderettes, it’s good enough for me!” 🙂 So I ran out and bought a bottle that day.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Prep + Prime Vibrancy Eye Primer

April 16th, 2012 by Karen 21 Comments

mac vibrancy eye primer

MAC Prep + Prime Vibrancy Eye PrimerFor real though! I could spend hours at the MAC counter if left unchecked. Allegedly, when I went to the mall the other day, it was “just to browse” (yeah, right!), but next thing ya know, I’m chatting with the MAC artists about concealers, and WHOOPS! Would ya look at that? It’s 30 minutes later. 🙂

We talked about our faves, and we each had different ones, but one thing all us agreed on (and gushed about) was the awesomeness of today’s unsung makeup hero, MAC Prep + Prime Vibrancy Eye Primer ($30).

An under-eye makeup primer of heroic proportions, this puff-reducing powerhouse deserves a key to the city. It brightens dark areas with a hint of glowing pink shimmer, and preps the skin for concealer by creating a smooth, perfect surface upon which it can be applied.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Right Image Cremesheen Glass

April 9th, 2012 by Karen 19 Comments

A sheer pink gloss to layer atop neutral pink lipsticks? — that shouldn’t be hard to find.

Right…?

Famous last words.

You’d think it would be easy peasy! — but quite a few sheer pink glosses have a milky quality to ’em and pigments that gather in the fine lines of my lips; the end result can look patchy and uneven.

Or how about sheer pink glosses that are just too sheer? Or too pigmented? Gah! In the first case, they don’t add much, if anything, to the lipsticks they’re supposed to enhance; in the second, they overwhelm the lipsticks they’re supposed to help.

With MAC Right Image Cremesheen Glass ($19.50), I can happily tick the box next to “None of the above.” 🙂

This sheer, pale mid-tone bluish pink packs just the right amount of pigment. It’s enough that when I wear it by itself, I can see the pink on my lips, but it’s not so bold or opaque that it overshadows lipsticks when it’s worn on top (oh! — I love how it looks on top of Modesty Cremesheen).

MAC Unsung Heroes: Modesty Cremesheen Lipstick

April 2nd, 2012 by Karen 38 Comments

mac modesty cremesheen

I know that for some folks, especially ones who aren’t as fanatical about interested in makeup as you and I, it’s surprising to find wearable lip colors in MAC’s permanent line.

At lunch with my BFF Cindy a couple months ago, when I pulled out nude pink Modesty Cremesheen Lipstick ($14.50) to touch up after the meal, Cindy was shocked when I told her the lippie was from MAC.

Cindy, a makeup minimalist (to the extreme!), had an impression of MAC that many people share. She doesn’t wear makeup very often (the last time I saw her wearing eyeliner was at my wedding six years ago), but she has cruised by MAC counters many times before, and seeing the glammed-up artists there, always just assumed MAC only carried crazy colors.

No matter how many times I’ve tried to set her straight, gah! I swear, if I had a nickle for every time I’ve told that girl that MAC isn’t only about brights… But she doesn’t listen, probably because we’ve known each other for more than 20 years (she’s like the sister I never had), so she tunes me out when I go into makeup mode…or talk about Tabs. 🙂

She did show an interest in MAC Modesty, though, which is great! — because I think it’s one of those eminently agreeable lip colors that every gal should try.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Double Dare Cremesheen Lipglass

March 26th, 2012 by Karen 43 Comments

mac double dare

I usually have a pretty good memory. Like, I can normally recall the things you’ve told me about yourself — how many cats you assist or the name of your favorite perfume — even if you mentioned them months or years ago, but for some reason, today I can’t remember the last time I played Truth or Dare.

And it’s bugging me! — because I wanted to tie it into this post about MAC Cremesheen Glass in Double Dare ($19.50), today’s MAC Unsung Hero.

I’ve been sitting here racking my brain, but the best I’ve come up with is one hazy memory of my roommates back in sophomore year daring me to knock on the door of the guy who lived in the apartment across from ours to tell him that we thought he was hot (“Hi, uh… My name is Karen and I live across the way and my roommates and I just wanted you to know that we think you’re cute okay bye!”), but I don’t think that was the last time.

Maybe the last time was so traumatizing that I blanked it out. Or perhaps I’m just running out of free space in my mental storage area, so my brain is deleting some of the useless stuff to make room for more important things, like makeup. 🙂

Oh, well… I’m sure I get more value out of remembering to bring this creamy reddish coral lipgloss with me than I’m likely to get from any of the stupid stuff I did back in the day, LOL!

Now, coral glosses? I happily rock ’em all year round, but during spring and summer, when bright lips rule the school, I could wear them 24/7. Double Dare happens to be one of the glosses that rarely leaves my purse, and it’s the shade I usually recommend to friends who say they like the idea of wearing a bright coral gloss like MAC Lychee Luxe or Viva Glam Cyndi, but don’t want to deal with a sticky Lipglass.

It’s just so darn easy! I can wear it without a lip liner, and even apply it without a mirror, like when I’m walking through a parking lot, which I actually did last night when I stopped by Target.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Bamboo Eyeshadow

March 19th, 2012 by Karen 25 Comments

mac bamboo

What do we want? BAM-BOO!

When do we want it? NOW!

What do we want? BAM-BOO!

When do we want it? NOW!

Weirdo that I am, I’ve been chanting this to the windows and walls all morning long. FYI: This is what happens when you’re a stay-at-home professional pet assistant starved for human contact (no offense, Tabs).

I’ve also been marching up and down the halls, one fist raised in defiance, the other clutching a pan of MAC Eye Shadow in Bamboo ($14.50), to protest against the lack of love this often overlooked warm brown matte receives. RAGE AGAINST THE MAKEUP MACHINE, YOU UNSUNG MAKEUP HERO!

LOL! Seriously, though, MAC rock star browns like Soft Brown and Soba always get a lot of love, while Bamboo scoots under the radar.

I know it might sound strange to refer to matte browns as flashy, but for me, as far as staple shadows go, Soft Brown is a rock star. A lot of people, and I’m one of ’em, love it for contouring and as an anchor shade for more complicated eye looks.

Basically, Bamboo is like the light rock version of Soft Brown. Instead of those intense orange tones, I get more of a subdued apricot on my NC42 skin, which I think is just as pretty in its own quiet way.

And Bamboo fits a niche that Soft Brown sometimes fails to fill. On some skin tones, Soft Brown can look really…orange. If you feel too much like an Oompa Loompa in Soft Brown, take a swipe at Bamboo on your next trip to a MAC counter.

I love it in the crease for subtle contouring, and all over the lid when I want a really simple neutral eye; I think it looks great patted on the brow bone, too.
