The Rouge Bunny Rouge “Loess” Eye Shadow Palette Channels Chanel

July 5th, 2017 by Karen 12 Comments

rouge bunny rouge loess
The delicate and dainty Rouge Bunny Rouge EYe Shadow Palette in Loess ($59)

There’s a morsel of that marvelously mysterious Chanel wow factor fluttering about the cool-toned Rouge Bunny Rouge Loess Eye Shadow Palette, and oh! — I’d also like to say that if you have warm-toned skin like I do, I’m 100% convinced that warm-toned wonder women can also wear cooler tones like these.

Now back to what I was saying about that Chanel wow factor…

RBR had fun with the finishes in this pigmented palette in a way that reminds me of Coco. There are four powder shadows — a rose, a beige, a purplish taupe and a gray — with finishes that combine the best of the satin and matte worlds. They blend with the ease of a satin but look a little like mattes on the lids. You can see see that a glint is there at first glance, but when you pause to look more closely, where did it go!? it disappears…

Don’t you just love subtle touches in makeup like that?

The Rouge Bunny Rouge Discovery Coffret Fragrance Sample Set

October 16th, 2015 by Karen 5 Comments

rouge bunny rouge discovery coffret-890

rouge bunny rouge discovery coffret

As there are seven fragrances in the new $50 Rouge Bunny Rouge Discovery Coffret set, that means that you can wear a different Rouge Bunny Rouge scent every day of the week, which, according to my calculations and an independent double-blind study performed by Tabby Technologies, a Tabs the Cat Industries LLC subsidiary, you now have seven more reason to obsess over Rouge Bunny Rouge. 🙂

There are seven little fragrance samples in this set, and I think they’re all pretty great. Rouge Bunny Rouge likes to do things a little differently, and they stay in character with these scents. They’re unlike most standard-issue fruity florals that crowd the shelves at Sephora.

These combine fragrance notes in ways my nose has never met before, and because RBR is a boutique-sized brand and isn’t huge, the odds of you passing by someone on the sidewalk wearing the exact same scent are slim to none.

Soooo, if you or someone you love is a fragrance hound who loves interesting, uncommon scents that are hard to come by, this collection of samples could be a good deal.

Fri-Yay Makeup Fun: Glossy Lids and Winged Liner

September 18th, 2015 by Karen 19 Comments

glossy-lids-winged-liner

Winged liner.

Sometimes I wanna wear it with eyeshadow; sometimes I wanna wear it with eye gloss.

Yeah, that’s right! Eye gloss — the super shiny stuff, which isn’t known for being eminently wearable, not with that glistening, glossy finish that gleams and beams, but I think it can look super cool when paired with something unexpected like winged liner.

gloss lids top

In this look, I love the contrast between the glossy, wet-looking lids and the crisp black liner. It’s like I just got back from charging the waves! Surfer girl meets sassy secretary. 🙂

gloss lids final

Make the red lip a matte, and you’ve got an unusual, interesting twist on a classic black winged liner-red lip combo.

glossy lids closeup

The best part of this look is that it’s easy to do, which for me makes it perfect for Fridays when my mind is on other things (like pumpkin spice lattes).

Starting with bare lids, just curl your lashes if you need to (mine are pin straight, so this is a must). Then draw your winged liner, and tight-line your upper water line.

Wait for the liner to dry, and then apply and pat a clear eye gloss on your lids from lash line to brow bone (I don’t go too far into the inner corner with the gloss; otherwise, it starts to look heavy and a little weird).

Finish by loading up your lashes with mascara.

Springy and Smokey! Smokey Brown and Purple Cat Eyes and a Bright Coral Lip With New Makeup From Benefit, Dior and Smashbox

March 3rd, 2015 by Karen 27 Comments

Smashbox Double Exposure Palette

The sun’s out, I’m not wearing socks (FOOT FREEDOM!), I am wearing coral lipstick, and the eye look I tried this morning did not result in a complete disaster…

Yeah, it’s been a terrific Tuesday so far. 🙂

Today I felt springy and, I dunno, kinda smokey, so this purply brown smokey eye with soft cat eye liner happened.

Note to self: do this liner more often! It’s fairly easy — just black eye pencil with a dark shimmery purple shadow blended on top with a pencil brush — and it takes about half the time as a super crisp black cat liner, otherwise known as “the time-suck of my makeup existence.”

As a side, am I the only person who regularly attempts black cat liner when there’s, like, absolutely no time to get ready, and then inevitably ends up with their two tiny kitten flicks morphing into huge, unsymmetrical bat wings that don’t match?

Yargh.

Siri, remind me to wear soft cat eyeliner like this the next time I need to be saved from myself.

Oh! — this look was also an excuse to try a few new products from Benefit, Dior and Smashbox.

Some quick notes…

  • Benefit’s new Roller Lash curling mascara — This stuff is black, and glossy, and it lifts and curls lashes, but you absolutely, positively must comb out your lashes while they’re wet; otherwise, they’ll stick together like mean girls in the cafeteria.
  • Dior’s Nude Air Serum Foundation — This lightweight, medium-coverage hybrid skin care serum/foundation looks amazing on the skin. My homegirl at Sephora hooked me up (‘sup Nini!) with a fatty-bo-batty sample in shade 040, and when I finish it…I’m probably gonna throw down 53 large ($53) for a full-size replacement.

    Yeah, that good.

  • Smashbox Double Exposure Palette — Yep, these gorgeous, mostly cool-toned shades are a dream to blend.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Original Skin Blush For Love of Roses: It Would Be a Sin to Miss These Original Skin Blushes

February 12th, 2015 by Karen 19 Comments

Rouge Bunny Rouge Delicata Original Skin Blush For Love of Roses
Rouge Bunny Rouge Delicata Original Skin Blush For Love of Roses

Oh, for the love of roses!

Apparently, along with the recent revelation that I’m more than willing to “Mrs. Robinson” Nick Jonas, I’ve also realized that I’m going to need more makeup storage space for MOAR RBR BLUSHES.

Are you familiar with RBR’s $29 Original Skin Blush For Love of Roses powder blushes from their permanent line?

Um…kinda phenomenal! Like, so phenomenal that they make Chanel Malice shake in its go-go boots. Like, you could go months before wanting to wear anything else.

I’d never tried them before, but I finally got around to it this week, and I’m so glad I did.

I mean, yeah, if you’re going for ’80s-style unblended blush racing stripes down the sides of your face, these probably aren’t the best blushes for that; however, if you want natural-looking cheeks to go with your Victoria’s Secret angel wings and hair, you’ve come to the right place.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Original Skin Blush For Love of Roses in 033 Delicata
033 Delicata

The name “Original Skin” is totally apt. Think hot cheeks after boom-chicka-wah-wah, if you know what I’m sayin’.

Come on, don’t make me spell it out. 🙂 This is a family show.

The way these fine powders bind to skin is almost hypnotic. They cling so close that it’s hard to tell where your skin begins and the powder ends. At first glance, you don’t even realize it’s there, and then you do and you’re like YES.

And the flawless finishes will have people wondering if homegirl actually wakes up like that. The mattes border on satins (so they aren’t too stark), and the sheens lovingly do not invite all of the pores in the neighborhood out to play.

10 Things I Love About Rouge Bunny Rouge

January 6th, 2015 by Karen 29 Comments

10 Things I love About Rouge Bunny Rouge
10 Things I love About Rouge Bunny Rouge

1. Satin Eyeliner in Blue Roan

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some black liquid liner. It’s timeless and classic, never goes out of style, yada-yada-yada-yada, but wearing it day in/day out starts to get repetitive. At least for me it does. This deep blue…sigh! It’s gorgeously rich, with no weird green undertones, and it’s a fun way to switch things up and get out of a black liner rut. Plus, it’s smooth and easy to use. $28, and available now at Rouge Bunny Rouge counters and online.

2. The exclusivity

I kind of love that you can’t just roll up to any ol’ Macy’s and find RBR in the cosmetics department. There’s an air of exclusivity about it that I dig. It’s the same feeling I get whenever I wear Byredo Parfum’s Gypsy Water fragrance…like I’m in on a secret that only the cool girls know about.

3. Speaking of perfume…

Rouge Bunny Rouge has some really interesting and complex scents that aren’t your run-of-the-mill candy-coated pop star sh*t that someone slapped a glittery label on and dropped on a shelf at Sephora. Their scents surprise me all the time, but aren’t so far out and artsy that I can’t relate to them. Tenera ($129) is one of my faves when I’m in the mood for something kinda spicy and cozy (has notes of black pepper, heliotrope, vanilla pod), and Allegria’s my go-to when I want something more feminine and soft (grapefruit, mint, basil and tonka bean).

4. The extra touches

I like that the brand does fun little extras, like jewelry trays and tiny ceramic flower room fresheners that you can spritz your favorite RBR fragrances onto, every once in a while when you order from their website.

Fun Little Extras

5. Long-Lasting Eye Shadow in Rufous-Tailed Weaver

ERHMAYGOODNESS. Don’t even get me started on Rouge Bunny Rouge’s powder eyeshadows because we will be here for DAYS. Their complex, long-lasting, interesting colors and finishes are such a joy to blend. They really do make it SO easy.

Unsung Heroes: Rouge Bunny Rouge Nocturnal Ink Satin Eyeliner in Blue Roan

November 13th, 2014 by Karen 32 Comments

Rouge Bunny Rouge Blue Roan
Wearing my newest liquid liner love, Rouge Bunny Rouge Satin Eyeliner in Blue Roan ($28)

I’m afraid my pen of Rouge Bunny Rouge Nocturnal Ink Satin Liner in Blue Roan is about to start avoiding me because I’ve become totally obsessed with it. Pretty soon I’ll be knocking on its door at 3 in the morning yelling, “Blue Roan! I love you! Don’t you see?! We’re meant to be together forever!” Neighbors will call the cops and sh*t and complain about the wild-haired woman declaring her love for a liquid liner, but then I’ll just cut out a bunch of words and letters from a magazine and use them to make this note: Karen + Blue Roan = 4 Life!!!

Yeah, this dark navy blue liquid liner is le bomb, and not just because it survived season four of The Gilmore Girls (which I may or may not have marathon-ed in a single day).

Rouge Bunny Rouge Blue Roan
I’m also wearing Bobbi Brown Mini Long-Wear Cream Stick in Smokey Topaz on my lids, IT Cosmetics CC+ Radiance Palette on my cheeks and Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Pussycat on my lips

The liquid flows smoothly and evenly from the flexible felt tip. This pen creates thin and thick lines and flicks faster than you can say, “Karen, you need professional help.” 🙂

The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorite permanent collection products from a variety of bodacious beauty brands.
