What’s the Secret to the No-Makeup Makeup Look? Too Faced Thinks You’ll Find It in Their New Fresh & Flawless Face Palette

January 17th, 2013 by Karen 31 Comments

Too Faced The Secret to No Makeup Makeup
What’s “The Secret to No Makeup Makeup”? Why, it’s a $39 palette from Too Faced, and I’m wearing it here!

What’s the secret to no-makeup makeup? I’ll tell ya, it is NOT not wearing makeup.

Oh, gosh. Was that a double negative? I should probably strike that from the record…

Here’s the deal: for me, the no-makeup makeup look usually (as in almost always) involves the wearing of makeup.

Yes, I realize how that sounds. 🙂 I mean, if you don’t want to look like you’re wearing any makeup, why not just skip the makeup, right?

Well, because if I do that, I resemble these guys…

We no wear makeup!! Want brains!!

Researchers at the prestigious (fictitious) Too Faced Institute of Technology believe they’ve identified and isolated the secret to the no-makeup look, and they’ve added it to their new $39 The Secret to No Makeup Makeup Fresh & Flawless Face Palette.

Everything in this six-piece kit is designed to help you achieve a fresh, flawless look.

A bright under-eye area, bronzed and shimmery skin, flushed cheeks — that’s the idea.

Beginning from the left, that huge pan of peachy, golden tan goodness is called Bronzing Veil, and it’s something of a contouring powder, perfect for defining your cheeks.

As I think it’s a little light for me (I’m an NC42), I like to use it more as a highlighter.

Two blushes occupy center court. One, a cool-toned rosy pink called Creme Blush, and a matte, cool-toned pink powder blush with tiny flecks of golden glitter.

And on the right side of the palette, three creams — from the upper right, a light, peachy beige concealer (thought it looked kinda funky on me, too light and beige, so I didn’t use it for these pictures); a shimmery, cool-toned highlighter in the Luminize pan; and the Brighten pan in the lower right houses a cool-toned pinkish beige for highlighting beneath the arch of each brow and the under-eye area.

Too Faced also thoughtfully included a fold-out card with three different tutorials on it, and each one shows the proper products to use and placement.

  1. The Wake Up Makeup Look: simple and natural-looking
  2. Nude Radiance: color on the cheeks
  3. Red Carpet Contour: a full-on, dramatic look

I tried the Red Carpet Contour look for these pics…

The Too Faced Boudoir Eyes Soft & Sexy Eye Shadow Collection Takes Eyes From Bedroom to Boardroom

January 16th, 2013 by Karen 60 Comments

Too Faced Boudoir Eyes Soft & Sexy Eyeshadow Collection
Wearing the new $36 Too Faced Boudoir Eyes Soft & Sexy Eye Shadow Collection for spring 2013

Double entendre much? Too Faced obviously had something in mind with this palette. What do you suppose that was, hmm…

Something naughty! Um, naughty like, it’s the holidays, right after Thanksgiving dinner, and the supposedly family-friendly movie you rented to watch on TV with your in-laws has a steamy scene in it, and you want to cover your eyes and run out of the room screaming, or just disappear into the couch cushions and perhaps never return…

That kind of naughty. 🙂

The names are naughty! Fuzzy handcuffs, hello? Sugar Walls? Um, you have to be a child of the ’80s to truly understand the naughtiness of that one, LOL!

Too Faced calls it the Soft & Sexy Eye Shadow Collection. That’s where they were going, and that’s where they got. Sultry eyes, smokey eyes, lots of smudgy, “come hither” eyes. Those are the looks you’ll be rocking with these shadows.

Too Faced Boudoir Eyes Soft & Sexy Eyeshadow Collection

The larger pans on the left are the designated lid shades. Like most Too Faced palettes, this one comes with a little booklet with ideas for ways to work it.

Too Faced divided the colors into three rows. The top one for Day looks, the middle for Classic looks (like from the office to an after-work party), and the last row for Fashion looks, otherwise known as your more adventurous side (note: the darkest color in the palette lives here).

I actually mix and match the colors together because I’m crazy like that. 🙂 Rules are meant to be broken, right? (Although I’ve never cut off the tags from a mattress.)

A Tasty Trio Tempts Too Faced Fans Who Flush at the Thought of a Perfect Blush: The New Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush in Candy Glow

January 10th, 2013 by Karen 34 Comments

too faced perfect flush blush
Wearing the new Too Faced Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush in Candy Glow ($29)

I can’t stop thinking about that slumber party on Saturday…

I know, I know — what’s a 30-something-year-old woman doing talking about slumber parties? Well, it was probably the most fun I’ve had in months.

Sorry! I keep re-living it over and over in my mind. Please bear with me a little longer before we get to the new $29 Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush from Too Faced…

That night, Jen and I had a conversation about babies. She has a son, Nico, who’s a little over a year old now. Jen says he has a sixth sense where he’s able to detect whenever she’s nearby.

Even if she’s hidden from view (like behind a wall), he’ll shoot his arms out in her direction, like he’s sending out invisible baby radar waves to pinpoint her exact location, and I’ve been wondering if a sense like that might exist for makeup.

Here’s my theory: beauty gals/guys give off a signal that alerts all makeup artists within a 2-mile radius to their presence, letting them known that “easy prey” is approaching.

It’s like, I walk up to a beauty counter, and a silent alarm goes off — beep, beep, beep! “She’s coming! Hurry, everyone! Get ready!”

When I’m vulnerable like that, all I have to do is see something cute at a counter, like the Too Faced Sweetheart Perfect Flush Blush in Candy Glow, a tasty trio of pink, coral and peach colors all striped together like Neapolitan ice cream, and I’m like, “Sold, bitches!” 🙂

Bond Girl Makeup Looks Inspired by the OPI Skyfall Collection: From Skyfall, Savarine

November 7th, 2012 by Karen 34 Comments

bond girls severine skyfall look
A Savarine Bond girl makeup look inspired by the OPI Skyfall collection nail polish in Skyfall

“Bond, I’m going to need you to be on your toes for this next assignment. This group is very dangerous.”

“Whatever you say, M.”

“I’m serious, Bond. Cat ladies are the real deal. They’ve been known to actually persuade spies to abandon their missions and join the cat crusade. They will not stop until the world goes full-on feline!”

“So…does that mean I have to keep my paws to myself?”

. . .

Yeah, so if the curmudgeonly cat lady thing doesn’t pan out for me over the next couple of years, I might just become a full-time, self-employed Bond girl. Seriously! I’d have no problem slinking around the house by myself all day long looking all mysterious and sultry like Savarine, the Bond girl from Skyfall, the latest installment in the series.

I’d be totally fine with that.

In the movie, which opens this Friday across North America, Savarine is played by French actress Bérénice Marlohe. I’ve forbidden myself from reading any spoilers, even though I desperately want to (just two more days!), but movie stills are okay, especially when the makeup, hair and nails are to die for, like they are in these pics of Savarine.

Ooh, I love that gray eye look… It’s kinda smokey, and I dig the cat eye shape.

bond girls severine

See how the shadow slightly wings out at the ends? I feel like it elongates the eye. Oh, and peep the inner corners, and how her eyeshadow tracks her tear duct, ending in a slightly pointed tip. Makes it look even more feline, meow! 🙂

I was really inspired today by Savarine’s look, so I thought I’d give it a try this afternoon and wear it with OPI’s dark plummy red Skyfall nail polish.

The eyes: step by step

Last-Minute Halloween Costume Ideas: Crazy Cat Lady

October 25th, 2012 by Karen 36 Comments

crazy cat lady costume

Granted, I wear my crazy cat lady costume 365 days of the year, but for the purpose of a last-minute Halloween costume, I feel like I need to put in a little extra work to truly get the message across. 🙂

This costume draws inspiration from a crazy cat lady action figure I found a few years ago at the bookstore.

See, homegirl’s got the right idea. Why bother to put on real clothes when the cats just ruin ’em anyway? LOL!

To start, I grabbed my bathrobe and pinned a few stuffed cats on it. FYI, you need a minimum of three kitties, because the third cat is the gateway cat. It’s the crucial part of the puzzle that takes you from a mere “casual feline enthusiast” to full-blown CCL.

Then I put my hair up in rollers, put on some crazy, bright and glittery makeup…

On my cheeks I’m wearing the blush from the Too Faced Natural Radiance Face Palette, and on my lips that’s MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Outrageously Fun from the new Glamour Daze collection
