Is It Time to Get Fit? Maybelline Fit Me Foundation with SPF18

February 3rd, 2011 by Karen 56 Comments

When I think of a perfect fit, I picture J Brand skinny jeans or my yellow platform sandals; I don’t usually think of foundation.

But Maybelline hopes to change how we think of “perfect” this spring. Their new line of Fit Me foundations, concealers, powders, blushes and bronzes are designed to make finding your perfect shade that much easier to do.

Today I gave Fit Me Foundation ($8) a try — a liquid foundation designed to even skin tone without feeling heavy or looking like it’s caked on the skin.

After my date with the Fit Me Blushes yesterday afternoon, I thought the foundation would have that same casual makeup vibe.

For starters, it’s available in a whopping 18 shades with SPF 18, and the one I wore around the house today was 320 Honey Beige. The color’s not a great match for my skin tone, but it’s the closest of the ones I have right now.

Easy to blend, 320 covers most of the uneven patches and imperfections on my mug. I’d say the coverage is somewhere between sheer and medium, and it definitely doesn’t smooth as well as my current go-to foundation, Chanel Mat Lumiere.

I love how lightweight it feels, like I’m not wearing makeup at all. Maybelline also managed to keep the matte finish from looking flat.

The 9 Colors in the Too Faced Romantic Eye Classic Beauty Shadow Collection Are Cool

February 3rd, 2011 by Karen 66 Comments

Too Faced Romantic Eye Classic Beauty Shadow Collection packaging

After making it through my trip to the dentist yesterday without shedding a tear, I decided to reward myself with a quick trip to Sephora. It was all I could do to erase the memory of those silver hooks coming at me in that awful chair (have I ever mentioned that I think my childhood dentist was a sadist?)!

As I was tooling around the store, I bumped into the new Too Faced Romantic Eye Classic Beauty Shadow Collection kit.

“Oh, hai!”

For 35 smackaroos ($35), you get nine cool-toned powder shadows in a range of shimmer and matte finishes, divided into three rows of suggested “looks” — Day, Classic and Fashion.

How Well Will the New Maybelline Fit Me Blushes Fit You?

February 2nd, 2011 by Karen 48 Comments

Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Medium Nude on cheeks

Things that can be hard to find: four-leaf clovers, true love, Bigfoot and blushes that deliver a natural cheek flush. This spring Maybelline intends to make one of them easier to find with Fit Me, their new line of blushes, foundations, concealers, powders and bronzers designed to simplify the process of finding your perfect shade.

What is the Fit Me process?

It doesn’t sound too revolutionary to me, but the idea is that they organize the products from light to dark in the display. Each row represents one shade intensity, with the lightest shades on top (row 100) and the darkest shades on the bottom (row 300). Each row will have the full range of foundation, powder, concealer, blush and bronzer for each shade intensity.

To further streamline the process, the product names are short and sweet. For the blushes, for instance, instead of cutesy monikers, Maybelline went with simple, straight forward names like “Light Pink” and “Medium Mauve.”

This afternoon, I took a quick look at four of the 12 blushes ($5 each; available in 12 shades) in Deep Rose (a matte reddish rose), Medium Nude (a shimmery pink), Deep Nude (a light matte peachy pink) and Light Pink (a medium matte peachy pink).

How Do You Handle Flaky Foundation Caused by Dry Winter Skin?

February 2nd, 2011 by Karen 57 Comments

What to do about flaky foundation

“I have an annoyingly dry forehead and nose area, and no matter how much I moisturize, my foundation still looks flaky!”

Girl, you’re preachin’ to the choir. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. I get patches of dry skin around my nose and at the corners of my mouth (it always seems worse in winter), and it often leads to flaky foundation.

Foundation loves having a smooth surface to adhere to, so let’s talk about skin for a moment.

Wind chill factors outside, heaters cranking inside, dehydration, Benzoyl Peroxide and Retin A — these are just a few of the things that can cause or worsen dry skin (I seriously notice a difference when I’m not drinking enough water throughout the day).

This Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick Has Been a Very Good Boy

February 1st, 2011 by Karen 60 Comments

CHANEL rouge coco shine lipstick review
Wearing the new Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy

I know there’s probably, like, eight billion degrees of separation between Chanel’s latest lippie — the new Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy ($32) — and the technicolor troubadour who crooned Karma Chameleon, but my inner ’80s child doesn’t care. When it comes to cheesy pop music makeup connections, I won’t be denied!

No, Chanel didn’t name this Boy after Boy George, but it sure would have been neat if they had. 🙂

So what’s a Chanel Rouge Coco Shine?

It’s one of 18 new colors in Chanel’s new line of shiny, hydrating lipsticks. Boy, one of the colors coming in the line, will make a special appearance at select Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus Chanel counters next week, between February 10-14 — just in time for the Big V. Then, after Valentine’s Day, the shade will be pulled from shelves until it returns with the rest of the collection this March.

Turns out the lippie takes its name from one of Coco’s lovahs, Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel, the wealthy English polo player who played a big role in Mademoiselle’s colorful life. It was Boy who gave her the funds to open her first shop, and his clothes that influenced her early designs (their boxy, masculine shapes). Legend has it he asked her to marry him, but she refused, wanting to wait until she became financially independent first. Sadly, Boy was later tragically killed in a car accident.

I stopped by Nordie’s today to meet Boy in person, and, ya know, I think it’s fitting that there’s a love story behind it, because the color feels très romantique!

The medium-pigmented rosy pink contains the cutest flecks of golden micro-glitter, and it looks breathtakingly shiny and kissable on the lips. It could very well be the perfect date night lipstick — something worthy of a first kiss at the end of a great night.

This is my first rendezvous with a Rouge Coco Shine, and so far I like what I see. Boy feels smooth, like a thinner, slicker version of a Chanel Aqualumiere. It’s also non-sticky with a light rose scent and a very faint rosy vanilla flavor.

Speaking of the Aqualumieres, the Chanel artist I worked with today said they’re being phased out to make room for the new Rouge Coco Shines, so if you have a holy grail color in the formulation, now is the time to grab an extra; soon they’ll be going, going, gone.

The Shines come in packaging a lot like the regular Rouge Coco lipsticks, with the same kind of magnetic cap that snaps shut (don’t you just love that satisfying “click”?). The bullet, however, is a touch thinner and taller, which to me gives the new lipstick a more casual feel.

NARS Spring 2011: A Few Lipstick and Gloss Combos to Consider

February 1st, 2011 by Karen 55 Comments

nars spring 2011 lip gloss and lipsticks
NARS Spring 2011 Lip Glosses and Lipsticks clockwise from the lower left: Angelika, Super Orgasm, Nana, Tzigane and Madere

Sometimes I feel like a makeup mad scientist, mixing and matching beauty products to create something greater than the sum of its parts (it’s ALIVE! ALIVE!!!).

And it usually happens when I’ve got hella sh*t to do…like paying bills, doing the dishes or preparing my taxes.

That was the case today when I got to thinking about lip combos using the five lipsticks and glosses from the new NARS Spring 2011 collection.

Not exactly the most productive way to spend a Tuesday morning, but c’est la vie. 🙂

I’m feeling the Tzigane lipstick and gloss combos more than the Madere ones below, but that’s probably because I think Madere’s cool pink makes me look like a zombie.

These are just to spark some ideas, so let me know if anything springs to mind.

Lancome Ultra Lavande and the Artist Once Again Known as Prince

January 31st, 2011 by Karen 47 Comments

lancome ultra lavande

Mr. White must have liked Mr. Purple.

Mr. White was my middle school music teacher, and one year in band he had us play a medley of Prince songs as an ode to The Purple One (I played the flute). Imagine, if you will, a room filled with 13-year-olds, their instruments out of tune, rocking out to Raspberry Beret and Purple Rain. And while it must have been painful for him, Mr. White sat through the entire thing with a straight face. I only wish I’d had the foresight to tape the ghastly tune; it would have made an awesome ringtone.

This occurred to me today while playing with the purples in Lancome’s spring collection, Ultra Lavande, a limited edition release for eyes, lips, cheeks and nails. The release recently pranced onto shelves and online, and, for the record, it went well with Take Me With You (MY FAVE!) playing in the background. 🙂

Butterlies Fever Ultra Lavande Blush ($40)

Butterflies Fever Blush was the piece I was most excited about before the collection came out, and I think it looks just as beautiful in person as it does in pictures. The color’s a lot lighter then I thought it would be, however, and the darker purple shades in the smaller butterflies turned out to be an overspray (bummer). BTW, the flecks of glitter in the pan are HUGE! MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B

Ombre Lagnetique Long Wearing Shadows in Disco Gold and Disco Silver ($25 each)

Both deliver mad sparkle. If you like gobs o’ glitter and don’t mind a somewhat dry cream texture, these might make you wanna boogie down. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B

French Touch Absolu Lipstick in Berry Rose ($35)

How cute is this tube? It’s got a cool disco ball thing goin’, but it picks up every fingerprint. This pigmented creamy berry, unscented and unflavored, feels smooth and slick on my lips. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A-
