These Boots Stay Perfect and Come in 22 Colors: The Boots $6 Eyeshadow Singles

July 26th, 2010 by Karen 60 Comments

boots stay perfect shadow review

Here’s a question I wish I could answer: why are some days easier makeup days than others? Seriously, some mornings I wake up with agile fingers and a mind filled with makeup inspiration; on those days I can bang out a blended look with six different eyeshadows and barely bat an eye. Other days, however, even the simplest look using a single color will feel like a Sisyphean task.

Whether or not the universe is conspiring against me, I know one thing for sure: whenever I feel like I’m making a fist with five thumbs, these Boots No. 7 Stay Perfect Eyeshadows ($6 each) are going to come in handy.

I started wearing Khaki (a sheer greenish gold powder) last weekend, and now I can’t wait to see the other colors in this permanent collection of shadow singles. There are 22 to choose from, and unlike the uninspiring Boots Breeze trio I tried last week, Khaki looks and feels smooth on my lids (the powder doesn’t look like it’s sitting on top of my skin).

Gals who love natural eye looks might like its subtle shimmer (it’s not as bold as a high shine frost). The effect reminds me of the light outside in the summer at dusk.

I Raise My Glass to Becca Glossy Lip Tint in Mimosa

July 26th, 2010 by Karen 60 Comments

becca mimosa review

Ever since an “incident” about a decade ago involving free cosmopolitans (long story short, but I hadn’t eaten anything beforehand and weighed 98 pounds at the time), I haven’t been a big boozer, but I am a total lush (as you well know) when it comes to makeup.

I can’t restrain myself around colors like Becca Glossy Lip Tint in Mimosa ($23).

Dior Pink Design 5-Colour Eye Palette: Friday Fun and a Go-Go Girl Face of the Day

July 23rd, 2010 by Karen 30 Comments

After we finished our TPS reports this afternoon, Tabs and I decided to play hooky and start the weekend early with gravy (for Tabs) and Dior’s new fall Pink Design palette for me. 🙂

Dior Pink Design 5-Colour Eye Palette, $58

Sometimes I’m a lazy bum when it comes to makeup, yo, and I really like products that take the guesswork out of things. Dior did that here with Pink Design by bundling together almost everything I needed to do this look for my eyes — an eyeshadow base, some cool powder shadows and even a cream liner (for $58, couldn’t they have thrown in a mascara, too?).

To brainstorm ways to work Pink Design this afternoon, I listened to Cat and Mouse by Nikki & Rich for inspiration. Are you a fan? I kinda love their ’60s go-go sound.

It got me thinking about thick cat liner, big false lashes and frosty lips…which led to tonight’s go-go girl-inspired shimmery pink and purple eye.

Are you ready to go-go? Let’s give it a try!

Should You Breeze Past This Boots No. 7 Mineral Eyeshadow Trio?

July 23rd, 2010 by Karen 10 Comments

Joining empty toilet paper rolls and the reality TV star known as “The Situation” on my list of pet peeves: awkward makeup packaging.

Since my recent brush with Boots beauty products left me seeing stars (I found Star Anise, aka my current favorite drugstore gloss!), I expected this Breeze to blow me away.

At first I thought the small curved brush that comes with the Boots No. 7 Mineral Perfection Shadow Palette in Breeze ($9) looked kinda cute and innovative, but that changed as soon as I tried to wield it. The thing’s a bear to use! — clunky and hard to manipulate (at least by me).

Making matters worse, the three bands of makeup in the palette are, like, so narrow that even a MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush, with its relatively small brush head, barely fits the pans.

Hip, Hip, Hooray! Three Sheers for Becca Glossy Lip Tint

July 22nd, 2010 by Karen 58 Comments

becca glossy lip tint review

Okay, where’ve the Becca Glossy Lip Tints ($23) been all my life? Seriously, did you know about these? I guess they’ve been around for years, covertly gliding under my radar with their non-sticky, long-lasting and oh-so-shiny texture, and I’ve been woefully out of the loop.

Wet like juicy jelly, they should be perfect on days when all I want is a sheer (but not too sheer) wash of color.

This week I tried three of the 25 shades on for size…

Dior Misty Mauve 5-Colour Eye Palette, Meet MAC Satin Taupe

July 22nd, 2010 by Karen 70 Comments

dior misty mauve swatches review photos

I know it’s a little unusual to start a Dior review with a question about MAC, but here goes: do you do MAC Satin Taupe eyeshadow? It’s a shimmery purplish taupe in MAC’s permanent line and a staple in a great many makeup bags (I love it too).

If it’s also a favorite of yours, take a gander at the new Dior Misty Mauve 5-Colour Eye Palette.

This $58 princess is one of two new eye palettes Dior released with their fall collection (the other being Pink Design), and it shimmies onto lids with five cool-toned shades — a shimmery light pink, a shimmery white, a shimmery purplish taupe, a matte taupe and a shimmery mauve — that MAC Satin Taupe should get along with quite nicely.

Misty doesn’t need the help, though. She can also stand on her own, and when I slipped her on my lids this morning, I marveled at how well the included colors complement each other, blending sans muss or fuss.

Methinks it’s one of the more user-friendly palettes (especially if you like shimmer) to hail from the House of Dior in many moons.

When it comes to shimmer, Misty Mauve has it in spaces. Dior did add one matte shadow to keep fans on their toes…but the other four shimmer like sunlight through glass (borderline frosty even).

Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer vs. the Treadmill

July 22nd, 2010 by Karen 61 Comments

rimmel exaggerate waterproof eye definer review

Before going nowhere fast on the treadmill the other day, I lined my lids with Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Deep Ocean.

Like the great Billy Idol once succinctly sang, it was nothing but “SWEAT, SWEAT, SWEAT!” After 40 minutes of running like I was being chased by aliens, I could have filled a bucket (eww!).

One of five shades in a new line of eyeliners, Deep Ocean has an automatic twist-up pencil tip (no need to sharpen, yay!), a striking rich blue tint and a great $6 price.

Dior Pink Design 5-Colour Eye Palette: A Perfect Excuse to Try More Pinks and Purples

July 21st, 2010 by Karen 74 Comments

dior pink design swatches review photos

How do you feel about purple eyeshadows? Or pinks? If you’re not a fan, I totally get it. I love ’em now, but I used to avoid both (CORRECTION: I just fixed a typo in this sentence. I DO like pinks and purple eyeshadows now, but at one time I didn’t) because I thought they made me look kinda trashy and tow up…like I just lost the kind of cat fight where girls remove their big hoop earrings and bust out the Vaseline before going toe to toe in the schoolyard (NOTE: violence is not the answer, kids).

But if you’re even a teeny, tiny bit curious about pink and purple eyeshadows, Dior’s $58 Pink Design 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palette might be an elegant (albeit expensive) way to get to know them better.

It’s one of two 5-Colour eye quints from Dior’s fall 2010 collection. With a sheer and creamy iridescent eyeshadow base, a dark purplish black liner and eyeshadows in shimmery purple, shimmery purplish-pink and glittery pink, it covers all the bases for some very chic cool-toned looks.

Working with purples and pinks can be trickier than working with easy-peasy neutrals. Bold lines can be tougher to blend away, but Pink Design’s shades and textures, like those of other Dior shadows I’ve tried, abide by my brushes and feel very beginner-friendly to me.

More to like…

  • Dior sprinkled the pink shade with a healthy dose of fine glitter (aka “good glitter”), giving the palette a fun, flirty vibe.
  • The creamy purple liner expertly draws opaque, solid lines without any skipping and adheres nicely to the lash line (but it struggles along my waterline)
  • I didn’t think I’d like the iridescent base at first (thought it looked straight up white in the pan), but I do; it applies as a sheer, opalescent pinkish white that flatters lids even when used by itself
