MBBTV #9: Cheer Up with Tokidoki Prisma Lip Gloss

April 10th, 2010 by Karen 12 Comments

Good morning, glory. 🙂 How did you sleep? I’m sorry I haven’t touched base in a while, but I was mostly offline last night. El Hub found inexpensive tickets (thanks to a TravelZoo Weekly 20 deal in their free email newsletter) and took us to the symphony! We watched Duncan Sheik sing alongside the SF symphony orchestra. Not something we do very often, but it was nice to unwind. We got all dressed up, too (so did he!), and then had a quick dinner after the performance.

I wanted to take pictures, but you’re not allowed during the performances (something that’s rarely stopped me from trying, ha!). I did sneak this one innocent iPhone shot though: tuning their instruments.

Back to makeup and beauty — I spent part of this week playing with Sephora’s new Tokidoki Prisma Lip Gloss. If you love cute packaging AND Tokidoki as much as I do, here’s a video with some closeups and observations. I have reservations about the gloss itself, but I’m such a fiend for cute packaging!

NARS Cactus Flower: A Bloomingly Blendable Blush

April 9th, 2010 by Karen 26 Comments

Confession time: part of the reason why NARS Cactus Flower Cream Blush ($26) drew me in was because it looked so freakin’ scary in the pan, LOL! I’ve had serious love affairs with brighter-than-bright NARS cheek colors before (Mounia, anyone?), so I hoped from my fingers to my toes that scary blush lightning would strike twice with this shimmery reddish coral.

Cactus Flower’s one of eight cream blushes in the NARS permanent makeup line. The texture feels slightly thinner than MAC and Illamasqua cream blushes to me (almost like a gel blush), and I think that’s part of the reason why it’s so smooth and easy to blend.

It makes the lazy beast in me dance jigs whenever I put it on because of how little work it takes to use — just a few swipes with my fingers, and less then a minute later I’m out the door.

Wearing Cactus Flower at the start of the day. NOTE: I am NOT nekkid in this pic. 🙂 I’m actually wearing a tube top, ha ha!

It’s Time for a Summer Romance with Clinique Brandied Bronze

April 7th, 2010 by Karen 34 Comments

Unconventional?! Avant-garde? A breakthrough in color palette technology?

Well, not exactly… Yep, we’ve seen colors like these in palettes like this before, but that hasn’t stopped me from falling for Clinique’s new Brandied Bronze Eyeshadow Palette ($25). When I think “classic summer eyeshadow shades,” this bad boy has six of the colors that regularly come to mind.

Clinique Brandied Bronze

A limited-edition summer collection with products for eyes, lips, cheeks and face. Prices range from $14-25.

Brandied Bronze’s beige, bronze, gold, teal, purple and pink are so spot on that if Ryan Reynolds asked me to go on a three month surf vacation with him, I could foreseeably make it through the entire trip with just this palette, a single cream blush, waterproof mascara and a tube of MAC Nymphette. 🙂

Terre D’Or Joins the Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzer Family for Summer 2010

April 2nd, 2010 by Karen 16 Comments

Even small deserts are hawt. 🙂 This one’s a light matte brown with a touch of golden glitter, and it goes by the name of Terre D’Or!

Aren’t those rolling sand dunes on top of the pan hawt? Terre D’Or is one of two (Terre Halee is the other one) new limited edition Soleil Tan de Chanel bronzers ($50 each), and if the sandy pattern looks familiar, that’s because the bronzers are already part of the company’s permanent line. The two new LE shades arrive in May as part of Chanel’s summer collection.

I spent quality time with Terre D’Or this week, which is the lighter of the two, and it just might be a little too light to use as a bronzer on my NC35 skin. It does leave behind a lovely whisper of golden glitter on my skin, but very little color comes through, and I’m beginning to think it functions better as a glittery highlighter for ladies with medium to dark skin. Lighter-skinned babes, on the other hand, get a very pretty, traditional bronzer, one for contouring and adding a warm, healthy sun-kissed glow.

Bright Lights, Sheer Lippies: Two New Gloss Fluo de Chanel Lipglosses for Summer 2010

March 31st, 2010 by Karen 35 Comments

WARNING: Do not stare directly at these tubes! Like liquid neon, both of the new Fluo de Chanel lipglosses ($27 each, available in May) may cause temporary blindness. 🙂

Pop (the shiny coral) and Laser (the shiny hot pink) are dressed to play for TEAM BRIGHTS this summer as part of Chanel’s Les Pop-Up de Chanel collection, and if I were to judge them on outward appearances, they’d look bright enough to require shades!

But…

Top Secret Cargo: The Pro Picks Collection Includes Makeup for Every Day

March 31st, 2010 by Karen 25 Comments

Urgh! Why do so many pre-packaged makeup kits contain at least thing I just don’t want? I call ’em bad beauty eggs, because it only takes one of them to throw a kit’s bargain/value ratio completely out of whack.

I expected it to happen again when I took my first look at the Cargo Pro Picks Collection ($39), a tiny kit of four items for face and lips.

Ready, Set, Headbang! St. Tropez Shimmering Bronzing ROCKS!

March 27th, 2010 by Karen 19 Comments

Luckily for St. Tropez, their new bronzing powder pellets really do rock, and not just in the ’80s power ballad kinda way.

Shimmering Bronzing Rocks ($40) actually look like little rocks. Well, they go from looking like rocks to looking like delicious chocolate truffles, but that could just be me! 🙂

Why rock?

Luxurious St. Tropez specializes in thinking outside the box when it comes to their self-tanners and bronzers. These Bronzing Rocks complement skin that’s already been kissed by the sun, taking it all the way to the Bronze Age by adding a shimmery, golden glow to shoulders, decollete, cheeks, face, lips and eyes. To ladies of lighter skin tones, Bronzing Rocks deliver a beautiful but subtle glow that’s safer than a regular tan; darker skin tones get a lovely golden shimmer.

How to rock

To apply, swirl a brush on the rocks (hold the olive!) and apply directly to the skin. Or, wield one of the rocks like a piece of chalk, drawing on the eyelids or lips, fun!

One of the best power ballads, evah!

“Good” glitter and a peachy golden glow

St. Tropez feels like a casual bronzer to me, one I’d wear to a beach bar barefoot in a slinky summer dress. I used it today to contour my face and cheeks and really like the fine glitter because it doesn’t make my skin look oily.

As for the color? — worthy of a good headbang. 🙂 It’s a golden, peachy brown about the shade of late afternoon sunlight, and it’s not muddy or orange at all on my skin.

I’m Dreaming of Dolce and Gabbana Midnight Bloom

March 26th, 2010 by Karen 58 Comments

Wearing some things from Dolce & Gabbana’s Midnight Bloom summer collection: Smooth Eye Colour Duo in Laguna (eyes), Crayon Intense in Blue (eyes), Luminous Cheek Colour in Tan (cheeks) and Classic Cream Lipstick in Delicate (lips)

I had a dream once where I was wandering through a beautiful tropical garden at night. It was just me by myself, exploring under the light of a full moon, and had I stumbled across it in the dream,Dolce & Gabbana’s Midnight Bloom summer makeup collection would have fit right in.

Clockwise, from upper left: Luminous Cheek Colour in Tan, Smooth Eye Colour Duo in Laguna, Crayon Intense in Blue, Classic Cream Lipstick in Delicate

The greens, corals, pinks and solitary electric blue look like the colors from a nighttime scene — soft, romantic and almost pastel — but while the colors befit a fantasy, the prices aren’t so dreamy. Ranging from $20-59 apiece, they’re definitely not as affordable as drugstore brands.

This week I took a look at four things from the collection.

Smooth Eye Colour Duo in Laguna ($36)

This powder eyeshadow duo comes with two shimmery shades, a forest and a seafoam green, that blend soooo crazy good. The soft, fine texture just melts right into your skin. And paired with a good base like Urban Decay’s Eden Primer Potion, they last all day long with very little fading or creasing. Who’s it for? Girls who love greens and don’t mind a splurge.
