Illamasqua Powder Blusher, AKA Pigmentation Nirvana

July 29th, 2009 by Karen 35 Comments

Illamasqua Powder Blusher gets two thumbs up

“Sir, let my report show that Illamasqua’s Powder Blushers ($23) join their lipsticks and cream blushes in the oh-my-gawd-this-is-hella-pigmented department.”

I’ve been getting to know Excite and Beg, two of the 15 shades currently available online at Sephora.com, and I think I might be hooked on both.

Vibrant and buttery

As if their rich colors weren’t awesome enough, these finely-milled blushes feel just like buttah, melting seamlessly into my skin.

The texture reminds of Shu Uemura’s Glow On Blushes, some of the best blushes I’ve ever tried.

All-day wear

Both shades (and I’m guessing the others, too) last for hours, with the colors staying true on my cheeks from dawn until the freaks come out at night.

Excite, $23

Excite applies as a REALLY bright matte orange. Beauties who love bolder blush looks just might love it paired with coral lipsticks and glosses. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Illamasqua Adventures in Lipstick: Holy Pigmentation, Batman!

July 29th, 2009 by Karen 19 Comments

illamasqua swatches scandal lip
One layer of Scandal applied with a lip brush

Hiya, ladies. I wanted to share a few more pics of the two Illamasqua lipsticks from yesterday’s swatch post.

Like the other Illamasqua lipsticks I’ve tried, Obey and Scandal apply with intensely VIBRANT pigmentation, but that’s kind of a double-edged sword…

High pigmentation = tread lightly!

One the one hand, the richness and boldness of these lip colors took my breath away, but working with this much color proved tricky; I found it easy to unintentionally cross the line between dramatic and Baby Jane.

Scandal, $20

Scandal, a matte yellowish pink, has just the faintest touch of cream. I think it looks bold and bright applied directly from the tube — cool for dramatic makeup looks (like for theater) — but it may be a bit much for everyday use.

A lip brush seemed to produce the most natural look, and because of Scandal’s pigmention, I only needed to use a very thin layer of product for complete coverage.

Added bonus: Scandal photographs *really* well. 🙂 Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Obey, $20

At first I struggled with Obey, a matte coral pink, because it lacks Scandal’s creaminess.

That seems to make it look and feel somewhat drier than its sibling on my lips, and coupled with Obey’s intense pigmentation, it spelled a full-on recipe for lip trubs.

A single layer applied directly from the tube looks thick and kinda soft porn-ey (eww), and even a thin layer applied with a lip brush still looks heavy.

Illamasqua Swatch O’ Rama

July 28th, 2009 by Karen 30 Comments

illamasqua reviews all

It’s a British invasion, yea! 🙂

Last week Illamasqua cosmetics became available for purchase on Sephora.com, and I’m guessing I’m not the only Yank who couldn’t wait to grab some goodies from the upstart makeup line.

Hallelujar for NOT having to pay international shipping, right?

I feel like I’ve been waiting for frickin’ Godot to see this day, and when the UPS dude showed up at my doorstep I snatched that package out of his hands with a quickness normally reserved for Nordstrom shoe sales and In N’ Out cheeseburgers.

Let me know what you think from these swatches. Reviews will be coming soon. 🙂

Urban Decay Ink for Eyes Likes to Move It, Move It…MOVE IT!

July 28th, 2009 by Karen 41 Comments

urban-decay-ink-for-eyes-cream-eyeliner-1

I know that a lot of us have been looking forward to Urban Decay Ink for Eyes, UD’s new fall collection of cream eyeliners, since we first got wind of ’em earlier this year.

Six to choose from

The Ink for Eyes Cream Eyeliners ($22 each) come resting peacefully in narrow, boxy little gray compacts.

The packaging? — interesting and practical, even though I thought they looked like little coffins at first (they’re actually a lot more useful than that). 🙂

I’ve been playing with three of the six shades…

  • Binge: a matte, deep navy blue
  • Loaded: a shimmery forest green
  • Pyrotechnics: a sparkly white with flecks of purple, green, gold and blue glitter

It’s alive!

If you have naturally oily eyelids, Ink for Eyes might pose a challenge. I have semi-oily lids, and these bad boys move around A LOT, dancing up into my crease and creeping down under my eyes when nobody’s watching — and it happens really fast, too, like within 10-15 minutes!

Starting with a primer like Urban Decay’s Sin Potion beneath the liners makes a huge difference, though, significantly extending wear time.

I tried all three atop Sin, and with help from the primer they stayed put for about four hours before creeping up into my crease.

Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Fresque Reminds Me of Peaches and Cream

July 27th, 2009 by Karen 25 Comments

chanel venice fall 2009 swatches reviews fresque joues contraste

My BFF Cindy likes to tell the story of the time she caught her grandma watching music videos on BET. Grandma, an older Chinese woman, doesn’t speak a lick of English and looked a little confused by 112’s Peaches and Cream.

Whether it was the gyrating women in booty shorts or the slow-mo scenes of milk pouring over ripe peaches, we’ll never know, but we think she may have thought she was watching a commercial for fruit. 🙂

To this day, whenever I hear the song or see peachy makeup like Chanel’s Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Fresque, I think of grandma…

This morning I spent some time with the blush ($42), released with Chanel’s Venice fall 2009 collection, while bumping some Peaches and Cream.

Is that a duochrome?

At first I thought Fresque looked like a pretty standard peachy blush, but something unusual happened once I got her on my skin.

I’m Seeing Stars Thanks to MAC Love That Look

July 26th, 2009 by Karen 35 Comments

MAC Love That Look

Christmas came early for MAC fans this week as the company moved up the counter release date for two of its collections, Love That Look and Baby Bloom.

Love That Look’s 12 Starflash Eye Shadows ($15), four Pearlglide Eye Liners ($15), makeup brushes and mascara (the brushes and mascara belong to MAC’s permanent line) were expected to arrive at the end of the month. Instead, they dropped last Thursday. 🙂

Starring frosty MAC Starflash!

The uber-frosty Starflash Eye Shadows headline this show, focussing tons of attention on the eyes, BAM!

There’s nothing subtle at all about these powder shadows, so be prepared for bling when you wear ’em.

How I might wear Starflash

I like frosty shadows in moderation and probably wouldn’t wear an eye look using Starflash alone, as super frosty eye looks tend to overload my bling-ometer. I prolly would, though, apply ’em on the lid, outer V or use them as liners, sweeping a matte color into the crease for contrast. That sounds pretty to me.

Urban Decay Fall 2009: How Nude Lips Look with the 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils

July 23rd, 2009 by Karen 38 Comments

urban decay fall 2009 lip liners

Thanks to Urban Decay’s two newest 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils, public nudity is back — nudity as in nude lips, the kind that go great with everything. They’re super low maintenance, which spells great for lazy beasts like moi.

But getting the right nude lip look can be tricky. It doesn’t take much to go from Angelina Jolie lip color to Night of the Living Dead.

This fall, Urban Decay is making nude lips a little easier to get with two new shades of lip liner.

Wallflower (a warm peachy pink) and Paranoid (a cool dark pink) join UD’s existing family of 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils ($16 each).

If you’re new to them, you’re in for a treat. UD cooked up a moisturizing formula packed with hydrating ingredients like vitamin E, jojoba and cottonseed oils. They combine to create a soft, creamy lip pencil that applies like butter on bread.

All that, and they’re waterproof, too, lasting all day long without drying out my lips.

Both Paranoid and Wallflower pair perfectly with Urban Decay’s creamy pink lipstick in Naked ($22), another standout member of UD’s collection for fall.

Urban Decay Fall 2009 Lipstick Swatches and a Helluva Lot of Randomness

July 22nd, 2009 by Karen 71 Comments

Urban Decay Lipstick in Naked

Is it just me, or did today feel like the longest Wednesday EVER? I started off with good intentions — I meant to finish a project, do a couple loads of laundry and run my errands after work, but somewhere along the way things went to hell in a hand basket.

Tomfoolery reared its unproductive head, and an impromptu afternoon photo session with Tabs did not help.

Work it, Tabs! Make love to the camera.

This began as a simple Urban Decay Fall 2009 lipstick post. There are only three lipsticks in the release (Naked, Oilslick and Confession, $22 each), so it shouldn’t have taken long, right?

Oh, how I wish…
