Makeup for Photography: What Are Your Favorite Tips?

May 15th, 2009 by Karen 43 Comments

051409-makeup-for-photography

Good morrow, my Liz Lemons. I have a confession. Prominently displayed all around my parents’ house are pictures from my high school years, and my makeup looks GAWD AWFUL. The worst one pic is on the fridge, a snapshot of me sitting next to my mom at my 16th birthday party.

That night I decided to wear a translucent face powder, and in every flash picture my skin was an unearthly shade of gray.

Tragic!

Since then, I’ve learned a thing or two about makeup and flash photography…

And I bet you’ve got some tricks up your sleeve, too. 🙂

Are you ready to put on your makeup thinking caps to help out a fellow beauty junkie in need?

MBB reader Lesley wrote in yesterday asking for help with photography makeup tips for a few upcoming events.

I’m graduating next week (on the 22nd to be exact), and I’ll be having my graduation AND engagement pictures taken soon in an indoor studio.

It’s been great that you have been putting up a lot of tutorials and how-tos lately, so I’ve been getting ideas, but I was wondering if you have any recommendations or tips for makeup options and/or absolute dont’s for portrait makeup?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’ve only really gotten into makeup this past year.

What’s up, Lesley? Congrats on graduation and getting engaged. Talk about two mega milestones — WOOT!

Last November my BFF Jen asked me to be one of her bridesmaids, and I did my own makeup.

Here are a couple handy tips regarding makeup and photography:

  • Reach for your mattes. Opt for matte, rather than shimmery finishes for eye and cheek makeup. Shimmery eyeshadows and powders can give skin a greasy look under flash.
  • Apply your makeup in natural light. At Jen’s wedding, I noticed that the first thing her makeup artist did was set up shop next to the window with the brightest natural light. I’ve applied makeup in both bathroom and natural lighting, and I think I look my best in pictures when I apply makeup in the latter.
  • Opt for a powder with a yellow tint, rather than a translucent powder, to set your makeup. I learned this from my friend Melissa Street over at In My Professional Opinion. Transparent powders tend to leave a white cast when the flash goes off. I use MAC Select Sheer Loose Powder in NC 30 for pictures.
  • Practice your look and takes pics with a digital camera before your event. Then you can evaluate your work beforehand. You’ll be able to see and correct your mistakes. Before I started doing face of the day posts and taking a ton of pictures I never realized my tendency to apply heavier makeup to my right eye (I’m right handed and usually start with my right side), and I wasn’t lining my bottom lip evenly.
  • If you plan to wear undereye concealer, blend the hell out of it to remove any harsh lines. For serious. Even if you feel like you’ve blended out all the edges, blend some more; otherwise, you risk your concealer looking too obvious. I learned this the hard way, sigh!

For even more makeup tips, check out the interview I did with my friend Jen’s wedding makeup artist, Lynette. The tips are labeled as Wedding Makeup Tips but apply to all occasions where photography is up in the mix. Also, check out How to Look Your Best in Pictures, which gives advice on how to pose for pictures. 🙂

Ladies, I know you’ve got some good advice for our girl Lesley. When it comes to doing your own makeup for pictures, what are your favorite tips?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

5 All-Star Face Primers!

May 15th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

Today Rowena from Cosmetic Candy Blog shares five of her favorite face primers.🙂

primermixture-final

From the first moment I discovered primers, I have been obsessed with all the various kinds of textures and types out there.

Primer is supposed to do a few things; firstly prepare the face as a canvas, smoothing out pores and wrinkles, making foundation easier to apply and last longer. Some primers are color corrective, so useful for people with dull skintones or overly red ones, some primers have mattifying properties for oily skins, and some contain salicylic acid for acne prone gals.

There are also various textures to choose from — gels, creams, lotions, silicone based.
I have completely troublesome skin; oily on my t-zone, dry on the cheeks that then turns oily, sometimes flaky, always rosy, medium pores and a splattering of acne. I like my primers, but some work for me, some don’t.

With that in mind, here are five of my favourite primers.

1. Chanel: Le Blanc De Chanel, Sheer Illuminating Base

chanelprimer-final

Le Blanc De Chanel Primer (30ml, $45) is a scary looking white creamy liquid that applies looking a tad wan, then rapidly sinks in to leave a brightening, radiant effect. I am not a fan of anything that looks chalky on my skin, and this primer does not leave my NC35 skin looking ghostly.

As well as illuminating, this silicone based primer is supposed to smooth out the skin surface and makes make up last longer. It is quite a rich, moisturizing primer — the SA told me when I bought it that it was for more mature skins than mine (but I bought it anyway!). Oily skins may struggle a little with it as it can be a little rich, especially if you apply too much product. Alternatively, it can be applied to specific areas of the face just for a highlight.

I like this used with a mattifying foundation like Chanel Mat Lumiere as it gives a refined glow.

Verdict: A wonderful illuminator

2. Paul & Joe: Moisturizing Foundation Primer

pjprimer-final

Sitting in a beautiful glass jar is Paul & Joe’s moisturizing foundation primer, (30ml, SPF 12 apart from shade 03) which is a creamy liquid that comes in three shades.

I have shade 2 which is the warmest tone. Although I don’t like scented face products, this one smells beautiful and it really adds moisture to the face and adds a soft, dewy glow. Used sparingly under a powder foundation, it helps balance my skin so that I don’t get that horribly cakey-powdery-nose look. It also smoothes out my pores but not in a fake, over the top way and looks oh so pretty on my dressing table.

Verdict: Keeps the skin hydrated all day

3. Illamasqua: Satin Primer

illamasquaprimer-final

Illamasqua is a fairly new UK based make up brand, one which will be winging its way all around the world quite soon! Their Satin Primer (30ml, SPF 20, £18) is a white lotion which sinks in quickly and adds instant glow. Even with foundation and primer on top, my face is left with a beachy glowy look without looking like I have dunked my head into some Crisco. SPF 20 is also a big bonus!

Verdict: Dewy Goodness

4. RMK Creamy Make Up Base

rmkprimer-final

RMK make wonderful base make up products, from concealers to foundations to powders. Their primers are also excellent and come in liquid (30ml) for normal to oily skins, Creamy Matte Base (colorless and mattifying) and Creamy Make Up Base (30g) in two hues. I have a liquid and a creamy and I alternate depending on if my skin is feeling oiler or drier on the day.

Creamy make up base is my favourite because it really smoothes out the face and can be used all over. It adds a subtle glow and covers pores and lines quit well. I’ve also find it makes make up last longer, but works best if you give it some time to sink in properly.

Verdict: A great all rounder

5. Clarins Lisse Minute — Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch Make Up Base

clarinsprimer-final

This primer sits in a little pot (15ml, $30), inside containing a light salmon colored thick cream which easily blends into the skin. This primer is not just your average primer — it fills in lines and pores too using what Clarins calls miniscule Acacia Micro Pearls that sink into wrinkles and plump out the skin. I had to think long and hard before buying this one because it’s expensive for not a lot of product, but I am glad I did.

I use this just on targeted areas like on my cheeks where pores are more prominent and around my mouth where I feel lines may be visible. It provides me with the smooth canvas to work with and I really notice the difference to using foundation on its own and using it with this. If I want an extra boost, I use another primer all over and this one just on spots that needs some extra oomph!

Verdict: Polyfilla for the face

If you already have amazing skin, a lot of primers can be used on their own just to add some glow. Have I converted you to priming your face if you don’t do so already?! You know what they say; a stitch in time saves nine (or rather, a layer of primer saves you the job of retouching later!).

Three Custom Color Specialists Seychelles Collection, Take Me Away

May 14th, 2009 by Karen 22 Comments

three-custom-colorists-seychelles-collection

Add Seychelles, Africa to the list of dream vacation places. I spent a good hour this morning ogling pics of this tropical paradise of white beaches and granite rock formations, located just off the coast of Madagascar. The urge to check out the place was brought on by — surprise, surprise — makeup!

seychelles-all-5

I blame this bout of wanderlust on the three-piece Seychelles Collection by Three Custom Color Specialists. Inspired by the colors of the Seychelles Islands, the spring palette of brown, green, fuchsia, peach and pink shades includes makeup for the eyes and lips.

Eyeshadow in Coco De Mer ($23): This shimmery golden coco brown flashes to emerald green according to the light. The color reminds me of a toned-down, golden version of MAC Eyeshadow in Club, a duochrome that flashes from brown to green to blue to gray. I can see this color looking absolutely smokin’ with green, gold and bronze shades, like MAC Paint Pot in Delft, MAC Eyeshadow in Humid and MAC Eyeshadow in Amber Lights. The texture of Coco De Mer feels soft and finely milled, and it applies and blends with the ease of Shu Uemura’s power shadows.

Lipgloss in Peacock Flower ($22): Peacock Flower is a peachy pink that flashes to violet. It’s the most unique color I’ve seen for lips in awhile, and one of my new faves. The duochrome quality reminds me of MAC’s Lollipop Lovin’ lipstick, a funky but fun coral with hints of green released earlier this year. I like the feel of the thin and non-sticky formula, which packs a lot of shine.

Sheer Lipstick in Frangipani ($22): This shimmery, sheer fuchsia with golden flecks of glitter is free of taste or scent. The formula feels moisturizing and light on my lips.

Urban Decay Skyscraper Multi-Benefit Mascara: How I Wish My Lashes Looked Naturally

May 13th, 2009 by Karen 31 Comments

urban decay skyscraper multi benefit mascara

Makeup packaging junkies, get a load of the purple scribbles on Urban Decay’s Skyscraper Multi-Benefit Mascara ($22). Isn’t this cutie the hotness?

Urban Decay says their newest mascara works in six ways — lengthening, strengthening, separating, curling, brightening and thickening lashes without clumping or flaking. That’s a whole lot of ing words, LOL!

It comes in just a single shade, Black, and what I like best about it is that I still feel my lashes look natural with it on.

NARS Modern Love Palette Rocks the Cradle of Eyeshadow Love

May 7th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

nars modern love palette

Do you remember being an eyeshadow virgin?

I do. I remember it like it was yesterday, standing helpless and confused at makeup counters in front of rows of eyeshadow pans.

If I’d only had something versatile like the new NARS Modern Love palette ($50) back in the day, I could have saved myself a lot of trial and error.

Urban Decay Pocket Rocket Lipgloss: Stand By Yo’ Man

May 6th, 2009 by Karen 44 Comments

urban decay pocket rocket lipgloss

I think I’m going to send a resume to Urban Decay…

I would love to get a job there. They cook up some of the wackiest off-beat products in the biz. Take, for instance, the new Pocket Rocket Lipgosses ($19).

urban-decay-pocket-rocket-lipgloss-3

There are eight glosses in the set, and each one has a hologram hottie in the cap. Each hottie has a different guy’s name, and if you tilt the gloss from side to side, its hottie transforms from fully clothed to undies only.

I think that’s just the coolest thing ever. 🙂

urban decay pocket rocket lipgloss kirk 2

And there’s more to the illusion than a simple hologram. Urban Decay says the tubes, which are flat to fit comfortably in your pocket, contain pheromones to “enhance mood and sexual attraction.” Rubbing them releases the pheromones into the air where, like a good Marvin Gaye song, they help to get the party started.

I even like the little slogans UD gave to each of the tubes. First, there’s Jesse: “Jesse owns a dingy cave of a bar on the Sunset Strip, pouring whiskey and cheap beer for rock royalty. Undress him to see where his tattoos end and your one-night stand begins.”

LOL!

Givenchy Summer 2009: So Cool It’s Hot

May 6th, 2009 by Karen 20 Comments

givenchy summer 2009

The colors in Givenchy’s Summer 2009 collection remind me of the colors in this summer’s Laura Mercier Bohemia and Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess collections, with tan cheeks, coral and bronze lips and cool blues and grays for eyes.

I get the feeling Givenchy set out to satisfy everyone with this release by including warm cheek and lip shades and cool metallic colors for eyes.

The collection is out in stores now, with prices ranging from $24 (the Pop Gloss Crystal lipglosses) to $50 (Prisme Again Eyes quad) each. To give you an idea of what to expect, here are some swatches, pictures and first impressions of six of the nine items.
