February 9th, 2018 by Karen 6 Comments

mac fashion legacy

Are you ready for 14 Days of Ravishing Red? Stay tuned as we explore ravishing red ? lipsticks, lip liners and glosses every day on our way to ? Valentine’s.

Ya know…some days you just feel like a fire engine ? red on your lips. A blazingly bold, no-questions-asked red that doesn’t pussyfoot around — a red that isn’t a beige red, or a pinkish red. It isn’t a coral or brown. It’s just really, really, really red.

MAC Fashion Legacy Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($21, and one of 28 shades) is that kind of red.

14 Days of Ravishing Red! — Day 7: Matte Reddish Nude Lips With Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in Ruler

February 8th, 2018 by Karen 12 Comments

Are you ready for 14 Days of Ravishing Red? Stay tuned as we explore ravishing red ? lipsticks, lip liners and glosses every day on our way to ? Valentine’s.

Another starter red for my friends who really want to wear red, but then put a red lipstick on, look in the mirror and immediately blot 95% of it off with tissue before applying a bunch of gloss (I’m talking to you, Kim).

If a rich red is too much for you right now (And if it is, I totally get it. I used to be that way too.), then reddish nude Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in Ruler might covert you to #teamredlips.

Remember this glossy nude red from last weekend? Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in Ruler has a similar vibe.

It’s… I don’t want to call it demure. It’s more like a wink of red. 😉 It’s the next step after you feel ready to go redder than a light red stain or gloss.

Everyday Soft Glam Makeup Tutorial: My Go-To 10-Minute Makeup Look With Bronzed Plum Eyes, Peachy Coral Cheeks and Lips

February 8th, 2018 by Karen 35 Comments

I could happily wear this makeup every day.

This look… To say that it’s one of my favorites is an understatement. I’ve been wearing it FOR YEARS, and it has shown up many times on MBB in different iterations (most recently in the MAC Hyper Real Palette post), but I don’t know (or at least I can’t remember) if I’ve ever really broken it down before.

I don’t know why, but whenever someone asks me about it, I’m always surprised — maybe because it doesn’t seem like anything special — but now that I think about it, there must be a reason I rely on it so much.

I’ve done this look in moving cars, office cubicles, on public transpo, cramped airplane bathrooms (during turbulence), and lately with a wiggly toddler in my lap!

I literally did this makeup with Connor in my arms.

The eyes are lightly defined with shimmery bronze, plum and brown, and they’re paired with a soft coral-peach on the cheeks and lips. The skin is just shy of medium coverage and has some sheen to it.

It’s not an advanced or complicated look, but who cares? That makes it practical and realistically doable, and I like how I feel when I wear it. I can wear it pretty much anywhere and feel like the best version of K-$ is in the house. 🙂

I’ve listed the steps and products I use down below, but as usual, the brow gel, mascara, eyeliner, highlighter, bronzer, and even the foundation and lipstick, are easily substitutable.

That said, I do think that two of the products I use are “musts” (in makeup land, I use that term loosely) because they make the look what it is.

14 Days of Ravishing Red! — Day 7: Matte Orangey Red Lips With Tom Ford Cristiano

Are you ready for 14 Days of Ravishing Red? Stay tuned as we explore ravishing red ? lipsticks, lip liners and glosses every day on our way to ? Valentine’s.

There’s absolutely nothing shy or coy about a fiery, orangey red, especially one that’s as opaque and matte as Tom Ford Cristiano. I think it has a little bit of a vintage vibe to it, yeah? Like Betty Draper would’ve gone MAD HARD on this lippie back in the day.

I’ve noticed that orangey red lipsticks, particularly matte ones like Cristiano, look extra vibrant when you wear them with a navy blue or denim top. I don’t always coordinate my makeup and my clothing, but if a bold statement orangey red is involved, I’ll grab a blue dress or shirt when I’m getting dressed in the morning.

A Glamorously Grungy Makeup Tutorial: Smoky Reddish Brown Eyes and Vampy Matte Lips

February 7th, 2018 by Karen 24 Comments

reddish brown smoky eye tutorial top pic 1

I’m warning you now — ONLY wear this makeup when you want to feel like a total bad-@ss capable of capturing, and then breaking, all of the hearts in a room within the span of 5 minutes.

This beauty buddy movie pairs two bold focal points together — a messy reddish brown smoky eye and a crisp blackened red matte lip — to create a jammin’ juxtaposition of grungy and glam, and you know I’m all about the contrasts in makeup.

To keep the overall look approachable and well out of Insta-glam territory, I paired the eyes and lips with moderately matte skin (there’s a semblance of a sheen), casual, messy brows and a warm bronzed mauve cheek.

14 Days of Ravishing Red! — Day 6: Bright Reddish Coral Lips With MAC Relentlessly Red Lipstick

Are you ready for 14 Days of Ravishing Red? Stay tuned as we explore ravishing red ? lipsticks, lip liners and glosses every day on our way to ? Valentine’s.

When I say the words, “red lipstick,” and I picture a tube of a righteously redolent red, I don’t picture matte pink or coral. I picture a raucous rouge. Of course. But that’s why shades like MAC Relentlessly Red are so fun and interesting — because they don’t just fall into the basic, run-of-the-mill red category.

Relentlessly Red is red…but just barely, because it’s infused with mucho coral.

NUDESTIX Rock N’ Roller Easy Eyeliner Ink: 3 Things You Need to Know

February 6th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

nudestix rock n roller easy eyeliner ink review
Wearing the new NUDESTIX Rock N’ Roll Easy Eyeliner Ink in Golden Rosé

There’s an unwritten but not-so-secret rule in the Makeup Codex (which is an official-sounding book I just made up…but it’s real, though!) that says that if you’re in a hurry, don’t even think about attempting liquid liner, because you will regret it — we’re talking certain disaster — and generally, I agree, because whenever I’ve tried to do a cute cat eye flick with liquid liner while I was rushing, I’ve ended up with a pterodactyl wing instead — one that spreads from the corner of my eye up into my hairline.

But there’s an exception to this rule when you’re using the new NUDESTIX Rock N’ Roller Easy Eyeliner Inks ($24 each and available in three shades). I’ve been using them in 10-minute-makeup looks lately, and I’m able to draw dainty cat eye flicks with them every time.

That’s Bronze Patina on my upper lash lines.

1. They’re easier to use than the MAC “pizza cutter” liner.

When it comes to liquid liners with a roller wheel applicator (commonly known as a “pizza cutter liner”), I’d previously only tried the MAC one, and I thought it was quite challenging (and ticklish!) to use. Not only did/does the applicator tickle…but the liquid tightens up on my skin when it dries.

Not the case wit hNUDESTIX Rock N’ Roller.

9 Things to Know About the MAC Hyper Real Glow Highlighting Palettes

February 6th, 2018 by Karen 11 Comments

mac hyper real glow open get it glowing k
MAC Hyper Real Glow!
  1. These two new highlighting palettes are bound for the MAC permanent line, and each has three powder highlighters boasting a formula that I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen from MAC before…
  2. They’re $39.50 each and coming February 15th to all the usual MAC haunts.
  3. Get It Glowing is all about golden bronze, and Flash + Awe lives for rose gold.
  4. These look exactly like the MAC In Extra Dimension Highlighters on my skin. They’re high-beam headlight highlighters with a flattering opalescent shine, and they feel like a BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Powder.
  5. Essentially, they’re MAC in a BECCA body. They feel a lot like the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Powders and look similar on skin. They have that same practical pearly finish that you can dial up to full-tilt frost, or dial down for a subtler glow.
  6. While similar to BECCA’s beauties, these feel considerably softer and creamier, which is incredible, because BECCA’s Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Powders have been some of the softest, creamiest powder highlighter on the block for years.

The Hyper Reals feel a little springy and spongy to the touch, and when you press a finger into a pan, it actually leaves a fingerprint behind (!).

  7. The packaging reminds me of the long, slim cardboard MAC Girls eyeshadow palettes… I’m not crazy about it, actually. I hope they replace it soon, because the powders feel delicate, and I’m pretty sure they’ll break easily. A few hard knocks inside a makeup bag, and I suspect they’ll shatter.
  8. I thought these might be hard to wear because of how frosty they look in the pans, but once they’re blended, all I see is a soft, pearly highlight, even around the smile lines near my eyes. That’s good stuff! 🙂
  9. Girl, these are a GO! (Just don’t drop them.)
