Tabs loves his catnip plants.

He nibbles on them, pounces in and around them, swats at them and, on occasion, likes to model with them.

$9.99 L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Eyeshadow in Emerald Conquest Could Make an Army of Neutral Eyeshadows Surrender

September 22nd, 2014 by Karen 18 Comments

L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Eyeshadow in Emerald Conquest

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Eyeshadow in Emerald Conquest, $9.99

Sometimes I feel like I’m being held hostage by practical neutral eyeshadows. I fall into these long-term relationships with wearable browns, beiges and golds and don’t even realize when I’ve been wearing them on the daily for weeks until something, or someone, like my favorite checker at Target who always notices my makeup as she rings up my bottles of Vitamin Water Zero (Glow is my favorite!), points it out.

Life is way too short to wear beige 24×7, so my makeup goal for the week is to wear at least one look with L’Oreal’s Paris Riche Eyeshadow in Emerald Conquest ($9.99), a quad of super creamy, super pigmented powder eyeshadows.

So pretty, right?! I can’t wait to get that teal, deep blue and glitter up in my mix, perhaps with something like this glittery teal eye makeup look on makeup artist Troy Jensen’s Instagram.

Then I’ll go to Target to buy candy corn because, based on the decorations I’ve already seen in the store, Halloween apparently starts in September now (that’s crazypants).

Emerald Conquest and the other Colour Riche Eyeshadow Palettes (there are eight of them in all) are available now at drugstores, Ulta stores and online for $9.99 each.

Deep Matte Red Milani Lipstick in Enchanted Ruby

September 19th, 2014 by Karen 25 Comments

Milani Lipstick in Enchanted Ruby

Milani Lipstick in Enchanted Ruby

There’s something kind of vintage ’40s glam about Milani’s new deep matte red limited edition Enchanted Ruby Lipstick in ($6.49). I sure love how the matte finish looks in pics! If your lip sitch isn’t as dry as mine, you’ll probably be able to pull this off, no problem, but I find the texture a tad powdery and dry for me by itself…so I usually end up popping a gloss on top.

Enraptured by Enchanted Ruby? You can find it (and its enchanting cousin Enchanted Topaz) casting spells now at CVS and Walgreens stores.

Is Rosy Beige Nude Milani Lipstick in Enchanted Topaz a Gem?

September 18th, 2014 by Karen 15 Comments

Milani Enchanted Topaz

Milani Enchanted Topaz

I am captivated by the thought of an enchanted topaz — this Enchanted Topaz, Milani’s new $6.49 matte nude lipstick for fall because, hello, I’m the girl with five or six nude lippies in her purse at any given time. 🙂

I like how this rosy beige nude looks on my lips, especially when I wear it with a dramatic smokey eye, but I have a hard time with the texture… A dry, powdery matte, it’s unforgiving on any flaky areas of my lips (not a problem if I apply a layer of moisturizing gloss on top).

Topaz is one of three matte lipsticks in the new Milani fall Bedazzled collection. There’s also a purple shade called Enchanted Amethyst and a deep wine called Enchanted Ruby, and all of them are available now for a limited time at CVS and Walgreens stores.

Flower Beauty’s Double Take Eye Marker and Creme Eyeshadows in Poolside Kiss and Lovely Lilac

Flower Beauty Double Take Eye Marker and Creme Eyeshadows in Poolside Kiss and Lovely Lilac
Flower Beauty Double Take Eye Marker and Creme Eyeshadows in Poolside Kiss and Lovely Lilac, $9.98 each

Is it makeup or a marker?

Or a little bit of both?

[INSERT CARTOONY DOUBLE TAKE HERE]

These Double Take Eye Marker and Creme Eyeshadows ($9.98 each) by cruelty-free drugstore brand Flower Beauty are dual-ended eyeshadow/liner pens, and since I have a thing for makeup that looks like something you’d find in a steno store, I wanted to give ’em a try.

They’re $9.99 each and have a cream shadow with a doe-foot applicator on one side and a liquid liner with a chunky-monkey felt tip on the other.

I’ve started using these for hurry-up-and-go eye makeup. I swipe a small amount of the cream shadow on bare lids with the doe foot, and mellow out the edges with a finger. Then I line my upper lash lines with the marker.

Since the shadows are super sheer, they don’t require much blending.

Oh, and FYI — the shadows seem to dry out quickly, so don’t forget to close them good and tight (might also want to keep your receipt, just in case).

Poolside Kiss has a sheer mossy green eyeshadow on one end and a jet black liner on the other. Lovely Lilac has the same black liner, but pairs it with a purply taupe shadow on the other end.

There’s also an additional shade not shown here called Steel a Kiss (love that name), a dark purple, which you can check out at Walmart stores and online.

Herbal Essences The Sleeker The Butter Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner

Herbal Essences The Sleeker The Butter Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner

Herbal Essences The Sleeker The Butter Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner, $3 each

Deep breath. Ah…

I’ve been sniffing my hair a lot today thanks to new Herbal Essences “The Sleeker The Butter” Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner ($3 each). I washed and conditioned with both this morning and, ah…

Sorry, grabbed another sniff. Anyway, where was I?

Oh! Both the shampoo and conditioner contain cupuacu.

Yeah, I have no idea what that is… 🙂 But apparently it’s a tropical tree related to cacao, the chocolate plant, and it’s pretty great at taming wild hair. It also leaves my mane smelling exactly like coconut Life Savers, which, coincidentally, are one of my favorite candies in the whole wide world.

When I was kid, my mom would always let me grab a pack of gum or candy at the grocery store checkout line, and I’d usually go for the Tropical Life Savors. Then I’d eat all of the other flavors and save the coconut ones for last.

Look for The Sleeker The Butter Shampoo and Conditioner at drugstores and online now. A 10.1-oz. bottle of each costs $3.

Glowing Peaches, $10.47 Each: The Revlon Highlighting Palette in Peach Glow

September 15th, 2014 by Karen 11 Comments

Revlon Peach Glow Highlighting Palette

Revlon Peach Glow Highlighting Palette

I don’t know about you, but I’d kind of freak if I walked by a peach tree with glowing fruit, but Revlon’s Highlighting Palette in Peach Glow is still, hands down, one of my favorite drugstore products right meow.

Like its sister, Revlon’s Highlighting Palette in Rose Glow, you can work it as a blush, a highlighter or an eyeshadow.

But because of that brown in the center, Peach Glow can also serve as an improv bronzer, too.

You know, in a pinch.

Probably my favorite way to wear it, though, is the most traditional. Swirling all of the shades together, and applying that as a highlighter, for a bevy of glowing, buttery golden peachy goodness!

Ah…

Using it that way, all mixed together, I think it looks a lot like one of my favorite high-end highlighting powders, the Ambient Lighting Powder in Radiant Light by Hourglass, with the biggest difference between the two being their finishes (and price). I think Revlon’s is slightly shinier than Radiant Light…and maybe more obvious, or less nuanced.

Radiant Light also has tiny flecks of golden glitter in it, and Peach Glow doesn’t (a minor thing considering the big difference in price; Peach glow costs $10.47, while Radiant Light costs $45).

Revlon-wise, if you’re a darker diva and/or have a warmer skin tone, I’d suggest Peach Glow, and if you’re a lighter lass, Rose Glow would be the way to go.

The Revlon Highlighting Palettes in Peach Glow and Rose Glow are available now at drugstores, Ulta and online.

Giving Mortals Angelic Skin: The It Cosmetics CC+ Radiance Palette

September 12th, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

It Cosmetics CC+ Radiance Palette

It Cosmetics CC+ Radiance Palette

Radiant…

That’s a word that gets used a lot in beauty circles, isn’t it?

“Her skin was so radiant that one could read by it!” It’s like, naw, forget the candles. Just bring that girl with the radiant skin over here, badum-bum! 🙂

Speaking of radiance (how’s that for a lazy girl segue)…I’m kind of lovin’ the CC+ Radiance Palette by It Cosmetics ($38). The bronzer, blush and highlighter make me feel fresh-faced and bright.

Must be the finishes. They all have a little sheen to ’em, which adds a soft glow to the skin.

Oh, and the wear time? Exceptional. If Tabs refrains from rubbing his forehead all over my face, I get around 10-11 hours of great color from them.

In the pic below I’m wearing the blush and bronzer (the highlighter I’m wearing is the new Aura by Urban Decay — review coming soon).

You can find It Cosmetics CC+ Radiance now at Ulta stores and online.
