Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 488

February 11th, 2018 by Karen 10 Comments

Tabs turns up his purr-minator machine to warp factor 12 around Valentine’s Day, like his body, which is normally fueled by gravy and love, needs even more pets than usual.

I swear, he would spend the entire day on my lap if he could. Sometimes he’s so insistent for lap time that he’ll sit right on my elbow, as close as possible, and stare at my lap like an Olympic figure skater about to take the ice, like he’s been preparing for this moment his entire life.

He doesn’t just like lap time. He NEEDS it, and I feel bad because he doesn’t get as much lap time as he used to. His little sister/part-time pet assistant gets some of it.

February 10th, 2018 by Karen 6 Comments

To quote a great connoisseur of round, crisp cakes, “COOKIES!” And by the way, is it just me, or has Cookie Monster gotten a lot more… What’s the word? (Oh, the irony here.) Articulate? I feel like he’s expanded his vocabulary a great deal over the years.

In other news… I’m still baking my way through 2018! Last night I made chocolate chip cookies.

But I can’t keep too many in the house because I’ll eat them all, so most of them go to friends and neighbors…

Most of them. 🙂

I used a new recipe, too. I’m usually a Toll House chocolate chips girl, but I grabbed a bag of Ghirardelli Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips a few days ago and followed the recipe on the back.

They turned out pretty well! — although, I think I’ll add a touch more salt next time… Ooh! Maybe I’ll sprinkle sea salt flakes on top of them.

I love that contrast of salty and sweet. I’m also going to “up” the walnut ratio. I only used one cup, per the instructions, but I’m thinking they could have been nuttier… LOL. Heck, we all could be a little nuttier, amirite?

Side note/Bay Area trivial trivia: Everybody here says “GEAR-AR-delly.” For the love of all silky Maine Coon kitties, please, please, please do not say “jee-rar-dah-lee.” I went to school with somebody who always said “jee-rar-dah-lee,” and she insisted that it was right.

I was like, “Look, girly, you’re from Southern California. I don’t tell you about Hollywood and sunshine, but I’m from the Bay Area. GET IT RIGHT.”

LOL!

OK, enough about chocolate (for now). Let’s discuss other delicious and interesting things, like…

  • I’m endlessly fascinated by people and their relationship with makeup. In this Yale Herald piece, student author and makeup lover Max Himpe writes that “Ranks of men wear makeup. We do it in the day and at night; publicly and privately; silently and loudly. It’s worn daily or yearly or instinctively, on- and off-stage. We use makeup to conceal flaws, enhance features, as decoration or even as artistry. There is no one way; the parameters are endless. Some of us know other men who wear makeup. We all wish we knew more.” VERY INTERESTING ARTICLE.
  • Fashion designer/Project Runway alumnus Christian Siriano is partnering with e.l.f. for a limited edition makeup collection that launches today. Everything in the collection is less than $20, and there’s a LOT of color — like hot pink packaging and an eyeshadow palette packed with brights (green and teal, what?!), among other things.

I’m kinda surprised, in a good way. I loved the season he starred on PR, and even though I haven’t followed him closely since then, I always thought that if he were to do a beauty collab, it would be something along the lines of what Victoria Beckham did with Estée Lauder — high end, exclusive, lots and lots of black packaging.

I wonder if he’s going to branch out and release some makeup on his own.

  • Are you following the Winter Olympics? If you are, you might catch a glimpse this traveling squad of 230 young North Korean women handpicked to act as a sort of international cheerleading squad — except without the back handsprings and basket tosses — to support the North Korean athletes.

The members are mostly students from upper-class families in Pyongyang, and they travel abroad on behalf of the regime during special occasions.

  • Backstage at Fashion Week is a good place to glimpse products that will be launching soon, and MAC recently revealed that a new line of 24-Hour Studio Fix concealers will be launching this summer. The full-coverage liquid concealer will come in 34 shades and include a tube with a doe foot.

I’m down for full-coverage concealer, homie, but I hope they aren’t TOO matte, you know? I don’t mind matte concealer on my cheeks, chin and around my nose, but they’re usually a no-go under my eyes, where they often add about 20 years to my face.

Still looking forward to them, though! Studio Fix is one of my old-school MAC faves.

  • Behold! This bevy of majestic Maine Coon cats! *swoons*

These felines sport seriously silky shampoo commercial-caliber manes.

If cats could text, this is a good representation of how pretty much every conversation would go down.

While we’re on the subject of cats, I’m intrigued by this cat bag carrier. Of course, Tabs would only want one if it were Louis Vuitton or Chanel.

100 years of lip looks

OK, babes, I hope you have a wonderful Caturday. Talk to you soon. Bye. 🙂

I Found the Cutest Tops at Target in the New Universal Thread Line

February 9th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

target universal thread
I’m a little obsessed with the new Target Universal Thread women’s clothing line.

***TARGET SHOPPER ALERT***

I found the cutest line of clothes at Target. I think it just launched — like, literally just rolled out! — because when I walked into the store this week, the sales associates were pulling these huge racks of clothes, and they were stocking the displays and ooh-ing and ah-ing as they hung the shirts, dresses and sweaters, which, of course, stopped me in my tracks.

The line is called Universal Thread. It’s very J.Crew-meets-Levi’s, with a sprinkle of Ann Taylor on top. There’s lots of denim and prices mostly around $25, with different cuts of jeans, different washes and — get this — different lengths. I saw short, regular and long. And some cute mid- and high-rise styles, too.

Buuuuuuut I didn’t get any jeans, LOL! I grabbed a few tops instead because 1) they were adorable (hi), and 2) I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to find my size if I hesitated, so I just went for it.

I’m head-over-heels for this light blue denim button-up shirt.

target universal thread 2
Someone once told me that the denim-on-denim look is called a “Canadian Tuxedo.”

It’s comfy heavyweight 100% cotton and has two pockets on the front (also seems well made). The fit’s on the looser side, too, so it fits like a boyfriend shirt, but it isn’t over-sized or anything.

I’ve been wanting something like this for ages to layer on top of dresses and tank tops. It’s perfect! And I have a feeling it’s going to last a long time.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 510

February 5th, 2018 by Karen 25 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 11 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

1. Would you rather wear a ballgown or a tuxedo?

Depending on what I’d be doing, I could see myself wearing either, but I’d rather wear a ballgown. Ballgowns are pretty and fancy and they feel extra special, because how often do you get to wear a ballgown?

Plus, I love my black stretchy pants because they’re comfortable. But pants in general — like, regular structured pants — are hard to find that fit my body shape. I have long legs and a short torso, and pants are generally very uncomfortable for me…if they aren’t black and stretchy. 🙂

2. What’s the best way you know to start and keep a good habit?

I’m old school and analog, so I like using a printed calendar and those shiny star stickers that teachers give kids on their reports.

I like to track whatever habit I’m trying to build by taking a star, and putting one on each day that I do whatever I’m supposed to for the goal I’m trying to achieve. Like, if I want to exercise at least five times a week for a month, I’ll put one of the stars on the calendar whenever I do a workout.

There’s something satisfying about seeing those stars lined up on the calendar, and a key part of this is having a reward at the end; otherwise, what’s the point? Yeah, it’s fun to see the stars build up, but I also need to be working toward something, like a pair of new shoes, a facial, a small splurge at Sephora.

3. How well do you twerk?

Can I just answer this question with a bunch of old lady gray hair emojis? ?????? Because I’m not exactly sure what twerking is… It’s freaking, right? Well, that’s what we used to call it back in my day.

So, I don’t know how to answer this question…but I’ve got decent hip action, so I’m gonna say, “pretty well,” although I’m not sure I’ve ever done it before.

4. What was the last live play/concert/show you went to?

It’s been a while. The last live event I went to was a show in the city with my friends Jen and Cindy last year. We watched Roman Holiday, the musical interpretation of the Audrey Hepburn movie.

To be honest, I fell asleep, but that’s not uncommon for me in dark rooms these days. Even in the middle of the day.

5. A makeup item you loved that was sadly discontinued?

MAC Matchmaster Concealer. It was (I still have a stick left, and I’m cherishing that stick) the best under-eye concealer if you have dry skin under your eyes. It sits incredibly well, doesn’t look heavy and has a slight sheen, so the coverage doesn’t look matte or, let’s be honest, crusty.

I’m really crabby about it going off into the black hole of discontinued MAC products…

And while we’re at it, Coffee Eye Pencil… It was THE BEST basic brown liner.

Happy Monday

This is random, but you know what place is poppin’ on a Sunday Morning?

(I realize that this is Monday, but I just figured this out yesterday.)

Trader Joe’s is really poppin’ at 9 a.m. on Sunday. There’s nobody there. No lines, and no crazy people trying to mow you down with their cart, although there was one lady who freakin’ tried to mow me down when I was in front of the olives, and I was about to tell her to slow her roll, but then I was just like, you know what? Take a breath. It’s gonna be OK.

So, next Sunday you know where to find me.

And you know where I am now. 🙂 I’m chilling in front of my computer, counting down the seconds before the baby wakes up.

I hope you have a good day today and a great week. I hope we all have a good day.

BTW, did your team win yesterday? Tabs was happy to see the Eagles pull it off. As for me, I’m more about the snacks than the actual game. We had hot dogs, TJ’s onion dip and potato chips, and I also got some frozen garlic fries from TJ’s that were alright.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 487

February 4th, 2018 by Karen 7 Comments

As you know, because it’s been all over the cat fashion blogs, Tabs throws the biggest, hottest Super Bowl parties, and the talk of the town this year has been the custom Cartier diamond-encrusted, bejeweled gift collars. Every guest gets one.

But an extravagant gift like this also brings out the party crashers…

Some cats don’t care at all about football or fashion, though. All they care about is fancy swag, but they always underestimate how agile Tabs is. They think, oh, he’s just some retired kitty model, but if they had done their homework, they’d also know that he played tight end for the world champion Mill Valley Wildcats BEFORE he became a kitty model.

February 3rd, 2018 by Karen 24 Comments

Hiya, friend! Have you had breakfast yet? Some Saturdays I’m all about making a big breakfast with eggs, pancakes, bacon — the whole kit and caboodle — but sometimes I’m like “Naaah…” LOL!

Sometimes I need the rest more than the breakfast, ya know? So I’m just gonna chill on the couch with my cup of coffee, this episode of The Great British Baking Show Masterclass (Paul Hollywood is making baguettes!) and this delicious RX Chocolate Sea Salt Protein Bar.

Perhaps a grapefruit will be peeled and eaten… Perhaps not. We’ll see.

My friend Alis introduced me to these bars, and they’re SO good. She’s a busy hairstylist and works long days, so she’s always looking for quick healthy snacks that she can eat at the salon.

I think she gave me one of these bars while my roots were processing, haha!

Anyway, this one tastes like a brownie (and who doesn’t want brownies for breakfast?!), and they’re made with an amazingly simple list of ingredients. This one has dates, egg whites, almonds, cashews, chocolate, cocoa, “natural flavors” (eh, ya know, they want to keep their secret recipe) and sea salt.

The Chocolate Sea Salt one is my favorite flavor (Connor likes them too).

What have you been having for breakfast lately? Do you have a routine? Cereal? Oatmeal? A cheesy omelet?

In other news…

  • This guy actually does pretty well! You go, Bob Herzog! (Facebook)
  • Scientists ?? are having fun with Amazon reviews. They’re leaving reviews on everyday household products and beauty products like nail polish and dental floss, and describing how they use the products in actual scientific experiments.

Like, clear nail polish is used to apply pieces of brain to glass slides (no way!) and also comes in handy during species collection. (Apparently, so does dental floss, in case you were wondering.)

  • Makeup artist Linda Cantello, a.k.a. THE INVENTOR OF THE SMOKY EYE, breaks down the history of the look and how it evolved in the ’90s with Tom Ford during his Gucci days.

According to Linda, if it takes you longer than two minutes to do, you’re doing it wrong. She recommends sketching the shape with a black pencil, and then building it out with a liquid eyeshadow.

  • Cat ladies, this is totally a thing —> wedding pics ??? with your cat.

You wear your wedding dress, your cat hangs out with you (hopefully he or she is NOT too interested in clawing at your gown!), and a photographer captures the moment for prosperity.

Sadly, I met Tabs after I got married, but if he had been around, I would’ve done this in a heartbeat! Heck, El Hub probably would’ve made him his best man.

  • I mean, there’s NO WAY my entire makeup collection could fit into this $14 acrylic organizer from Amazon, but I’m still intrigued by it. It gets four-and-a-half stars with almost 2,000 reviews, so it’s gotta be somewhat good, yeah?
  • How did NASA’s first lady astronauts in the late-1970s handle things like menstruation and collecting urine samples in zero gravity when it had never been done before? Regarding bathroom hygiene during spaceflight, Smithsonian Space Shuttle Curator Valerie Neal says that, “They tried creating some sort of form-fitted plastic devices that you could tuck in close that would serve as a funnel, attached to a hose and plastic bag, but that was too messy.” Two women in the program were mothers, and they brought up the idea of adult-sized disposable diapers, which weren’t readily available at the time.

That’s NASA — and mom! — ingenuity for ya.

Oh, and if you need me today, I’ll be here trying to remove the remnants of this Chocolate Sea Salt bar from my molars. They’re tasty but CRAZY sticky!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Karen

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

February 2nd, 2018 by Karen 38 Comments

Cute cutouts for the win

1. Tops with back detailing

Cutouts and braids and peek-a-boo details, oh, my! I’m into tops with cute back action right now, because, let’s be honest…the only part of my body NOT covered in food at any given moment is my upper back. And if it’s the only part of me that’s going to be devoid of half-chewed Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies and organic string cheese, by golly, it’s going to be cute!

2. Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior Pink Plumping Mask

This moisturizing gel mask is pink and sparkly — although I can’t quite figure out how the shimmer works, because I don’t really see it on my skin when I look directly at it; it’s like sneaky side sparkle — and smells a like little like a triple berry smoothie.

It’s SUPER hydrating, too. I’ve been using it a few times a week in the morning when my skin feels even drier than usual.

kate somerville wrinkle warrior pink plumping mask
Sparkly!

When I apply a layer after cleansing and toning in the morning, eat breakfast and putter around for a bit, then wash it off, my skin looks and feels plump and moisturized. Kate S. says the moisture magic is from something called “HA3,” which stands for three types of hyaluronic acid, but really, every time I see “HA3” on the jar, I think “Ha-Ha-Ha!” instead. 🙂

All jokes aside, I love this as a makeup prep step in the a.m. because everything I put on top of my skin after it — foundation, concealer, powder, etc. — looks much smoother.

3. Classical Art Memes

These are totally a thing.

Adventures in Bread Baking, Chapter 1

January 30th, 2018 by Karen 32 Comments

rustic loaf
The first loaf of bread I ever baked

As of last Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, I am officially an apprentice self-taught bread baker, and I made bread all weekend long. In two days, El Hub, Connor and I have already eaten two huge loaves. TWO!

If you want a ? loaf — or loaves — and you happen to be within cat walking distance, let me know. I can hook you up. First come, first serve!

Granted, I can’t guarantee that the loaves will be aesthetically pleasing. After all, this isn’t The Great British Baking Show (Paul Hollywood would talk mad crap about my loaves), but they should be edible…ish.

Haha!

rusic loaf
It wasn’t a big rise, but it tasted GOOD.

I’m totally for #allthecarbs, but there’s going to have to be some kind of rationing or self-control involved, because I can’t keep eating this much bread… I just can’t.

rustic loaf
I love seeing the flour on the crust.

I actually made three loaves on Saturday — one rustic no-knead loaf that I proofed overnight, and two French bread loaves that proofed for a couple hours. I gave one of the French breads to Cindy as a belated birthday present when I saw her on Sunday before we went to the museum.

Well, it was supposed to be French bread, but it looked like a focaccia gone wrong… It might have been the weirdest, or the most awesome, birthday present I’ve ever given anyone. 🙂

rustic loaf dough
The rustic loaf before I put it in to bake (it’s in a dutch oven)

The first loaf was a rustic, no-knead round bread that was easier than I expected it to be thanks to Laura in the Kitchen.

It was deeeelicious! Almost like sourdough! Even though it turned out flatter than I hoped, it had nice big holes you could swim through, and apparently that’s something you want when you bake certain types of bread, which is something I learned from The Great British Baking Show.

You also want height, which, unfortunately, my rustic loaf lacked, because the dough deflated at some point overnight while it proofed in my microwave.

I still don’t know what went wrong (Was it the plastic bowl? Did the microwave get too cold?), but I’m determined to figure it out.

The second and third loaves were French breads, and they were more challenging. The recipe I used was supposed to be a good one for bread beginners, but I guess I did something wrong. I dunno… Bread is kind of mysterious. Unlike cooking, where you can usually figure out a way to salvage something if something goes wrong, I think baking bread is less forgiving. There isn’t as much leeway for incompetence, LOL.

french bread loaves
I felt like I had absolutely NO control over these loaves of French bread.
