celestial seasonsings decaf sweet coconut chai tea
Yum!

Ah… Gotta give it up to Mother Nature for coming up with the coffee and tea plants. That first cup of tea/coffee/mocha-frappa-whatever-is-your-Saturday-morning-beverage is a glorious signal to my body (and my mind!) that it’s time to unwind! It’s the freakin’ weekend, baby, and I’m gonna have me some fun.

Today I’m doing a slow ramp up because I’m craving this Celestial Seasonings Decaf Sweet Coconut Thai Chai tea. It tastes like a blend of chai and Thai teas, so I’m going to start with that, then move onto the big guns (COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE).

Then, I’m gonna tuck myself underneath a blanket and get cracking on a book I borrowed from the library called If You Were Here, by Jen Lancaster (it’s supposed to be funny).

I don’t know if you’re in the mood to read right now, but here are a few online stories that struck my fancy this week…

  • Makeup boosts my confidence. When I apply it, it’s like I’m donning my marvelous medieval armor to face the perils of everyday life.

(Nobody can mess with me when my brows are filled in, honey.)

Apparently, the same goes for the young women who compete in Utah cross country/track & field, which I think is awesome! Their motto is “Look good, feel good, race good,” and they bond on race days by putting on their makeup together.

What they wear is up to each person’s prerogative, and there’s no judgment on how much fleek (or how little fleek) someone decides to don during competition.

  • Good advice from IT Cosmetics Founder Jamie Kern Lima on the importance of being persistent and trusting your instincts, and not only in how it applies to being a startup entrepreneur, but to life in general.

“The biggest hurdle was hearing the word ‘no’ from just about every retailer,” she writes of the challenges she faced growing her business. “But I decided that it just meant ‘not yet.’ All of our most important partners to our business today turned us down initially — in some cases, several times. But we kept being persistent, focusing on truly developing life-changing products, and real women everywhere started spreading the word about the brand until eventually we got a ‘yes’ from every retailer.”

Note to self: when people say “no,” it just means “not yet.”

  • Are you into special effects makeup? I don’t have much experience with it (there was that one time…), but I love seeing how FX makeup artists bring characters to life.

Special makeup effects artist Arjen Tuiten did Angelina Jolie’s makeup in Maleficent, created creatures in Pan’s Labyrinth and, most recently, worked on the movie, Wonder, a story about a boy born with facial differences who enters a mainstream elementary school for the first time. Actor Jacob Tremblay sat in Tuiten’s makeup chair for more than an hour each day to get prepped for the day’s filming.

  • China currently requires animal testing on imported beauty goods, and the rule applies to everything sold under that umbrella, from lipsticks to blush to sunblock to deodorant.

But thanks to new developments in product testing technology, China might be moving toward ending its animal testing requirements.

  • Calling all #makeuphoarders! Take these steps, according to a KonMari expert, to cull your collection.
  • If Connor Claire eventually makes it to Mars (Most likely as part of the second wave of NASA’s manned MARS missions, because she’ll be a little too young for the first. Yes, El Hub and I have discussed this at length.), I hope that she 1) trusts me enough to watch her cats, and 2) asks for my help in preparing her beauty kit for space.

It will surely be hipper than the makeup kits NASA’s predominantly male engineers proposed for women back in the the late ’70s, which was when women were first allowed to join the shuttle corps.

  • Also, don’t miss this piece on a painter who uses lipstick as her medium, bugs (yes, the creepy crawly kind!) in your makeup, and scents for dudes that will make your man smell delicious (Valentine’s Day is right around the corner).

Other than reading (which is fundamental), I don’t have a lot planned this weekend. I want to do some cleaning because Operation Spring Cleaning 2018 starts right meow, and bake some lemon bars, but that’s about it.

What’s on your agenda?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

New Glasses!

January 18th, 2018 by Karen 21 Comments

I can see you…FINALLY!

Hi, guys! Greetings from The Land of the Clear Sighted! I finally got my new glasses, and I’m superbly thrilled to finally be able to clearly see the delicious detailed treats on T.V. when I watch The Great British Baking Show.

Like, I used to get moderatly hungry while watching that show even when I was half blind because I didn’t want to wear my contacts or my old glasses, but now that I can actually see the chocolate work and the shine on the ganache and the layers within every puffed pastry in extreme detail, I get ravenous! — and now I’m even that much more excited about baking.

These are the Kate Spade Johnna glasses in Havana Pink, and I got them through the Kaiser Permanente Optical Center, but I also see them available at other places online.

There are two main reasons I got these glasses, other than the fact that I think they’re pretty cute and don’t look like any other frames I’ve worn before.

First, they were on sale for 50% off (they list for $299), and now I kinda wish I’d also gotten a pair of Kate Spade sunglasses at the same time.

Second, I like how they fit on my face. I don’t have a prominent nose bridge, and many plastic frames that don’t have nose pads slip right down. But these actually sit snugly on my nose because the lenses are closer than usual. The distance between them is 15mm, which works great for me.

Plus, they don’t squeeze the sides of my head like a vise (always a good thing!).

Sephora Beauty Insider Collectible Pin Set

January 18th, 2018 by Karen 23 Comments

Pins!

Throughout the entire history of “Karen going to Sephora,” which is a long history, I’ve never gotten as excited about a Sephora Beauty Insider points exchange as I got for this Collectible Pin Set.

How cute is this!? It’s sooo cute, right? I had to (“had to,” air quotes) go to Sephora last week… Was it last week? Yeah, it was just before I got sick.

Anywho… I had to pick up another bottle of Kate Somerville Anti Bac Clearing Lotion because I was down to the last drop, and without it my face totally breaks out. So, I ran to Sephora, grabbed it, grabbed an $8 lipstick too (we’ll talk about that in a second), and when I was at the front counter, I saw this cute little set of four enamel pins.

I couldn’t say no.

When the sales associate asked me if I wanted to redeem any points, I didn’t use my standard answer, which is almost always “no” because I’m hardly ever really moved by any of the chintzy samples they give away for like 500 points, but I saw these pins and was like, “YES, GIRL. HOOK A CAT LADY UP.”

OK, there are four pins… There’s a peace sign with painted nails. That one’s very sassy.

Nail art lives!

There’s this unicorn, whom I’ve named “Treasure.”

Say hi to Treasure.

This trio of cute little hearts…

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 507

January 15th, 2018 by Karen 32 Comments

hello monday 011518
Happy Monday!

Good morning and happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, friend! Thanks to the healing power of convalescing on the couch while watching hours upon hours of The Great British Baking Show, I feel a little better today. 🙂 I think I’m in good enough shape to ?? paint my nails, hence the rainbow ? of bottles there at the top.

I’m thinking green or yellow today…

If you’re around, this week’s Monday Poll is a lightening ⚡ round. For each question, you have two options. It’s that simple…OR IS IT? My best advice is to go with your gut. Don’t overthink it.

Have fun and I’ll see you in the comments.

1. Brushes or fingers?

Eek! I wanna say fingers, but I gotta go with brushes…

Wait — no! Fingers. I meant fingers.

WAIT! Brushes! Yeah…brushes, for sure.

2. Long or short nails?

Short.

3. Drugstore or department store?

Girl, why you make me choose??

I guess I’ll go with department store… I guess, even though I ? drugstores too.

4. Lotion or body cream?

This alligator requires gallons of body cream.

5. Wax or pluck?

Pluck.

BONUS: Spend it or save it?

My heart says spend it, but my head/wallet says save it.

Now it’s your turn! Just copy the questions below , nd paste them with your answers in the comments.

1. Brushes or fingers?
2. Long or short nails?
3. Drugstore or department store?
4. Lotion or body cream?
5. Wax or pluck?
BONUS: Spend it or save it?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 484

January 14th, 2018 by Karen 5 Comments

So, today some bigwig VCs (venture cat-ipalists) visited the office because Tabs wants to expand the company and take it global. Tabs wanted to impress them and put his best paw forward, so he donned his favorite collars and struck some of his most successful power poses.

You know how it is. It’s all about making a good first impression. 🙂

The meeting went well, I think. Tabs wooed them, of course. You should have seen their furry faces when he told them about the time he performed the halftime show in the Kitten Bowl with Justin Timberlake (remember the famous cat wardrobe malfunction?).

The investors seemed impressed, so hopefully now they put in an offer. Tabs is asking for a year’s supply of gravy and a Chanel blanket in exchange for 10% of the company.

Hello From Camp Sniffles

January 10th, 2018 by Karen 43 Comments

In the comments the other day, Kim and I (hi, Kim!) were talking about how in the movie The Fifth Element there’s this one scene where Milla Jovovich takes an electronic eye makeup applicator — BY CHANEL! Of all brands! — and puts it on her eyes, and with the push of a button she’s instantly outfitted in futuristic eye makeup.

I need one of those right now for, like, my entire face, because I caught another cold (!). So I want a full-face stamper with a setting to “Pep Up Sick Face.”

That would be awesome…

Poor Connor caught a cold over Christmas, gave it to me and El Hub, finally got over her cold, then picked up another cold right after New Year’s.

So it’s been cold city around here. ??

She’s starting to feel better now, but there was a trip to the doctor’s for a chest X-ray a couple days ago, a low-grade fever and two impressive Exorcist-like projectile vomiting incidents.

Hold on… I can hear her upstairs in her crib singing ? to herself.

She’s definitely feeling better. 🙂 That’s good.

Anyway, she didn’t have pneumonia, thank goodness. Just another cold.

Of course, now that she’s feeling better, I’m down for the count, right? I guess this is just an opportunity for the human employees of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC to test our immune systems.

Thank goodness for The Great British Baking Show ??? because I’ve been marathoning it on the couch. This afternoon I learned all about Yorkshire pudding and churros. *cough* *sniffles*

Mary Berry ?‍? has been keeping me company while I down cups of honey vanilla chamomile tea ? and drink Emergen-C. Thanks, Mary! 🙂 She’s the British grandma I wish I always had, the one whose house I’d go to after school, and she’d always have tea ready, homemade biscuits (a.k.a. ? “cookies,” to those of us on this side of the pond) and tiny little cakes.

Mmm…

Hope things are going well over there. Stay healthy, please!

Karen

What’s (Still) on Your Skin Care Wish List?

January 9th, 2018 by Karen 56 Comments

make a wish

I noticed in the comments on the last Monday Poll that a lot of gals really want to focus on skin care this year, which got me thinking that 1) I’m not the only one! And, 2) I need to update my spring skin care wish list. 🙂

Not to toot my own horn…but I think I’m pretty good about taking off my makeup every night, then washing my face and moisturizing, but as far as my overall skin care diligence, I could do much, much better, like when it comes to exfoliating and using (*GULP*) sunscreen, and diligently using anti-aging serums.

I know, I know! — I used to be a sunscreen zealot, but somewhere between Exhausted Ave. and Sleepless Blvd. I fell off the wagon (there was a loud thump!), so I want to get back on it.

Unfortunately, one of the side effects of that is spending hours reading about skin care online and chatting with other gals about skin care products they like, and then compiling a new skin care “wish list.”

Yes, I realize that Christmas just passed, and a list this length is all sorts of ridiculous, but this is how I amuse myself. 🙂

My skin care wish list is ever growing (these are for the Spring Santa!). It currently contains mostly anti-aging products (toners and treatments), but there are also some moisturizers, cleansers and sunscreens on it.

Dear Spring Santa,

Here’s the edited, pared-down version…

The anti-aging products, i.e. the toners and treatments

  • Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid ($29)
This salicylic acid toner is at the top of my list. I know so many gals who swear by it for general anti-aging, and for evening their skin tone and clearing blocked pores. My skin does well with BHAs, so l’d really like to try it. I just found out that Nordstrom sells the line, and they do have that generous return policy…
  • Biologique Recherche P50 1970 Lotion ($62)
This cult classic toner was my Christmas present to myself, but it hasn’t officially arrived yet. I ordered it from Rescue Spa, and now I’m waiting with baited breath!
  • Paula’s Choice Resist C15 Super Booster ($49)
    I’m still looking for a less expensive alternative to SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, which is a vitamin C serum I love…but it’s $165!

I’ve heard good things about Resist C15 and hope to try it, but I need to finish a bottle of Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum first.

  • DHC CoQ10 Lotion ($47)
They call this a lotion, but it’s really a toner. It’s filled with compounds for 30+ skin, like alpha AHAs, Coenzyme Q10, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, and I’ve heard good things about it..
  • Prescription Retin-A (price varies)
I’ve had prescriptions to products containing different levels of Retin-A over the years, but I always stopped and started and stopped using them because I couldn’t handle the peeling.

Well, I’ve decided that I want to try them again this year, and I’m just gonna power through it.

  • Obagi Nu Derm (price varies)
This multi-step hyperpigmentation and anti-aging treatment is available from dermatologists. I had a friend who used it years ago, and it completely evened out her skin tone and transformed her skin — seriously, she looked like she had baby skin! I’ve been wanting to try it for a while, but it’s expensive.

It’s hard to nail down an exact price online, but it seems to be in the $300-400 range (!). So this is a long-term maybe/possibly want.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 506

January 8th, 2018 by Karen 42 Comments

monday poll jan 8 2018
We’ve got this!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 10 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

1. Do you like big butts and you cannot lie?

I have a big butt, so of course I like ’em. I would never lie about that either.

2. Are holiday get-togethers peaceful in your family, or do they ever turn into battlegrounds?

Can I plead the Fifth on this one? If so…I plead the Fifth. ? If not, everything’s always peachy keen, and everybody always gets along. It’s all perfect little angel babies, puppies, kittens and rainbows. ????

3. Do you think your coworkers would notice if you showed up to work wearing a different eye look on each eye?

My coworker is Tabs Tabs, so hell no.

4. Do you trim your nose hairs? (Bonus: Have you ever trimmed somebody else’s nose hairs?)

Um… Haha! I have trimmed a hair or two on myself, but I haven’t had the pleasure of trimming someone else’s. Yet. ?

5. What are we celebrating today?

We’re celebrating our general fabulousness. And ? doughnuts.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy and paste!

1. Do you like big butts and you cannot lie?
2. Are holiday get-togethers peaceful in your family, or do they turn into tumultuous battlegrounds?
3. Do you think your coworkers would notice if you showed up to work wearing a different eye look on each eye?
4. Do you trim your nose hairs? (Bonus: Have you ever trimmed somebody else’s nose hairs?)
5. What are we celebrating today?
