Couture Korea at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum

January 29th, 2018 by Karen 18 Comments

A Sunday Funday in SF at the Asian Art Museum

For all the drama you gotta put up with when you live in the San Francisco Bay Area — the hyper-inflated housing prices, the nerve-wracking traffic and the occasional tremblor — on the positive side, one of the most exciting, interesting cities in the world is nearby.

Yesterday I drove across the bridge to hang out with my friend Cindy and visit the Asian Art Museum, which is in the city’s Civic Center neighborhood (free parking on Sundays!). There’s a special exhibition going on now called Couture Korea, in which contemporary fashion designers create their own interpretations of traditional hanbok, the formal clothing worn during Korean holidays and special occasions.

“Beginning with ‘What Is Hanbok?’ (traditional Korean clothing), the exhibition examines history and tradition. Emphasizing mid- to late-Joseon dynasty clothing of the elite class (yangban), the varied and sophisticated hanbok in the Osher Gallery highlight proper ways of dressing for men, women, and children, with garments expressing social status, changing seasons, and special occasions or milestones in life.

The reproductions of hanbok in this gallery are based on wide-ranging research, including recent archaeological discoveries. In some cases, portraits and genre paintings are valuable sources for re-creating clothing of the past. Excavations of Joseon tombs in recent years have revealed many types of costumes that were used to dress the deceased. The conserved garments have served as primary sources for the re-created works throughout this gallery. Artisans at the Arumjigi Culture Keepers Foundation in Seoul employed authentic, historically accurate processes and production methods as well as historically appropriate fabrics for making traditional Joseon-period clothing. This research continues, reconstructing and reinterpreting the hanbok tradition, ushering in a new era of knowledge of fashion history.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 509

January 29th, 2018 by Karen 40 Comments

have a spectacular monday

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 11 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

1. Something in your pocket?

A stick of string cheese, which I’m about to go to town on, LOL. I usually wake up starving in the morning, but my stomach feels a little wonky today, so I’m going to warm it up first by eating something small that I know my tum can handle…which happens to be string cheese. 🙂

And then hopefully in a couple hours my tum will feel ready for my usual breakfast meal of “everything and the kitchen sink.”

No, seriously, I’m the friend that you’re embarrassed to take to the breakfast buffet because I will eat errrrrrthing in sight, including what’s on your plate — kidding!

Maybe…

2. Which of these three jobs do you think you could do best: magician, musician, or obstetrician?

I’d be a terrible magician (“So, the queen of hearts isn’t your card? Are you sure? It was supposed to be your card…”), an OK musician, and an awesome obstetrician.

It’s weird, but I used to be really freaked out by blood and needles, but they don’t really bother me anymore after having Connor.

3. Dollywood or Graceland?

Dollywood 4 life, homie!

4. One day, while shopping for foundation, you try on two of them that look great on you, and both of them cost the same. How do you figure out which one to get?

I’d think about which one feels lighter on my face (because I don’t like feeling like I’m wearing heavy face makeup), and I’d go with that one.

If they both felt equally light, then I’d go with the one that layers better, so I’d have the option to build it up if I wanted to.

I like having options!

5. Which is worse — wet socks or wet shirt cuffs?

Both are the devil’s work, but walking around in wet, squishy socks is sooo much worse than the cuffs.

Happy Monday

G’morning! 🙂 Happy Monday, babe. I’m eating my cheese stick now and watching the sky change from pink to purple to blue over the hills…

Ah…

Right now I’m trying to think of a couple small things I can do today to help this be a good week. Do you ever do that? Not talking about things like eating cheese and watching the sunrise (although those are perfectly fine ways to start a Monday morning)… More like taking a five-minute break every hour to stretch and do some deep breathing. I’m going to set alarms to remind myself to do it, too.

Anyone want to stretch with me? We can keep tabs ? on each other in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the poll questions. You can copy and paste these with your answers in the comments.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 486

January 28th, 2018 by Karen 8 Comments

Chief Feline Officer.

For driven cats like Tabs, it’s more than just a title.

Yes, the CFO is typically the head honcho and the chief gravy tester, but they can be a lot more than that, and Tabs wants to change what it means to be a chief feline officer. He wants to challenge preconceived notions about napping and productivity among corporate cats 10 years old and up.

Heading to work

You know, early to rise, first cat gets the worm, and all that…

Unlike most successful senior cats, Tabs can still purr-form at an optimal level on 16-20 hours of sleep. And then during the other 4-8 hours he just kicks @ss.

mac metrochrome retro matte

Yes, that’s a liquid lipstick up there (MAC Retro Matte in Retrochrome), and yes, I am deeply contemplating using it as an eyeshadow.

I’m curious — how do you feel about using products in unintended ways? I see it all the time on Instagram lately with makeup, particularly among MAC artists. They’ll take things like lipsticks and blushes and use them on lids. I’ve even seen a few artists use a lip liner… Gosh what was the name of that one? It’s a dark purple… I think it’s called Nightmoth. I’ve seen it used as an eyeliner, and not just along the lash line, but on the water line, too.

Yeah…that kind of freaks me out, but I have used cream and powder blushes on my lids before, so I’m not one to talk. I’ve also used lipstick as an eyeshadow base, and that went OK.

I’ve never tried using a liquid lipstick as a cream eyeshadow, though, but I want to now because of this brown smoky look by one of my favorite artists, Ana Siguenza. That’s a liquid lipstick on the eyes.

Super pretty!

I could live the rest of my life in a smokey eye. This is a brown liquid lipstick from @anastasiabeverlyhills in Bittersweet buffed, with a black pencil smudged. Lipgloss is #anastasiabeverlyhills Toffee Lipgloss. . . . . . . #makeup #makeupartist #nycmakeupartist #photography #fashionphotography #beautyblogger #creativedirector #bblogger #90s #nyc #newyorkcity #uppereastside #vegas_nay #hudabeauty #maccosmetics #anastasiabeverlyhills #itcosmetics

Ana’s cool, by the way. You should totally follow her if you aren’t already. She can do lovely natural looks and high-fashion makeup, too.

Anyway, I woke up thinking about this this morning… This, and bread. ???‍?

Oh, yeah! Today is bread baking day! — except, one small hitch so far, the dough I proofed in the microwave last night appears to have deflated overnight, so I have to figure that out…but hopefully either way I’m eating all teh carbs by dinner time tonight.

Before I don my apron and embark upon a baking adventure, here are some articles that caught my fancy this week…

  • FYI, men also get makeovers at Sephora. This dude went in for one and documented his experience and what he calls a “smooth and judgement-free” process. I think his end result looked great, too. Very natural! I’m impressed with the brows, and I love that the artist used Make Up For Ever HD on him. It’s one of my favorite under-eye concealers. I think it’s one of the most skin-like concealers around, and I’d recommend it to any guy friend looking to hide a dark-circle situation.
  • Fascinating read: Before Fenty: Over 100 Years of Black Makeup Brands. The makeup landscape for women of color was very different 30 years ago.
  • If you visit this speakeasy in Austin, Texas, you can leave your own makeup mark on their kiss wall. The owners keep a supply of fresh lipstick tubes on hand specifically for this purpose.

And you’ll also get a champagne toast. ?

  • This courageous cow ? escaped her farm to join a pack of wild bison!
  • People REALLY love their Nutella (I should know). Apparently, they love it enough to take off their hoop earrings and throw down at the supermarket! In France, a discount on the sweet spread led to outright riots at local grocery stores. “They are like animals. A woman had her hair pulled, an elderly lady took a box on her head, another had a bloody hand,” one customer told French media (!).

100 Years of Beauty in Hawaii (Side note: this woman is SO beautiful!)

According to the speaker in this video, researcher Brené Brown, “Courage is contagious. Every time we choose courage, we make everyone around us a little better and the world a little braver.”

I hope you feel good today (it’s Caturday, after all), but if you’re feeling anxious or worried for any reason, girl, I’ve been there. I’ve been there this week! Please take some time to remind yourself that you’re loved and you’re special.

I know that sounds cheesy, but it’s important. It’s more important than brushing your teeth or filling in your brows.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

January 26th, 2018 by Karen 24 Comments

senita athletics spring 2018

1. This top and base coat combo

I just started using it two weeks ago, but it’s tough as nails! The base coat is Essie Grow Stronger ($9), and the top coat is Dior Gel Coat ($28, yes, it’s kinda fancy schmancy).

essie grow stronger dior gelcoat

I wore it last week with Smith & Cult Bitter Buddhist. Side note: This is my favorite green polish of all time (even more than Chanel Jade), and I have a LOT of greens. It’s a sensational sea-foamy jade that looks baby blue sometimes. I wear it all the time. I love it!

I didn’t have a single chip for seven full days, but then a big chunk came off in the shower on the eighth day. But that’s great for me (I’m tough on my nails). Whenever I can get a full week from a mani/pedi without any chipping, I feel like I should throw a parade, LOL.

Even though I actually only want to wear Bitter Buddhist because the obsession is real and ongoing, I’m gonna try this base/top coat combo with different polishes over the next few week to see if other polishes hold up as well.

2. Bread recipes

I’ve been stockpiling them for days because I want to try baking bread this weekend for the very first time.

As of right now, I’ve tentatively decided on this artisan bread recipe from Laura in the Kitchen. It looks easy enough (famous last words)… I think I can handle it.

Obvs, this has all been brought about by The Great British Baking Show, which I still watch every night before bed.

Right before I start making the dough this weekend, I want El Hub to say, “On your mark, get set…BAKE!”

3. Hourglass Arch Brow Gel

WHAT!? This stuff is good! (Here’s the review, BTW). I love filling in my brows with it, and I want to shout it from the rafters. “I love Hourglass Arch Brow Gel!!!” In the three weeks I’ve been using it, I haven’t touched the brow pencil/clear brow gel combo I had been using and wearing daily in some form or fashion for THREE YEARS (most recently it was MAC Brow Sculpt brow pencil and the Benefit Clear Brow Gel).

It’s that serious. LOVE it for bushy, natural-looking brows, especially.

Can’t Miss Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day Tchotchkes at Target

January 23rd, 2018 by Karen 13 Comments

love ya wreath
Love ya, mean it!

Have I been hiding in one of those vineyard wine cellar caves, or has Galentine’s Day always been a thing? I saw these cards at Target the other day…

galentines day cards
This is totally a thing.

Galentine’s Day piggybacks on the spirit of Valentine’s Day to celebrate (and capitalize on!) the love and friendship between gal pals.

Yeah…it’s mostly just a marketing ploy to take all our lunch money, but I support the concept of Galentine’s as a holiday, because without my girl gang (yes, that’s you), I’d be comatose on the floor in a heap of tears most of the time. You’ve helped me through so many ups and downs, and I hope I’ve helped you over the years. We lift each other up in so many ways.

Aw, Galentine’s Day… Ya turn me into such a sap!

Gee, though, it was hard resisting the urge to put EVERYTHING pink/heart-emblazoned/love-related in my cart because the cuteness was happening all around, starting with these sweet mugs…

threshold mugs kiss mustache

threshold mugs dogs

threshold mugs oh lala

My favorite’s the mustache and lipstick duo.

For your gal-pal-on-the-go and/or doughnut enthusiast, this bright and cheerful coffee or tea mug would be a great gift…

donut forget youre awesome

Or how about these Valentine’s Day jewelry trays? I think these would be really handy myself, since I keep jewelry trays in every room to reduce the odds of me losing earrings, rings and whatnot. Your friend could also use one for makeup, too. Or camera cards. Or enameled pins!

I’m just sayin’, jewelry trays are hella useful.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 508

January 22nd, 2018 by Karen 39 Comments

monday poll 012218 mac flat lay

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 11 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

1. Raspberry berets or little red Corvettes?

Raspberry berets (but only the kind you can get from a second-hand store).

2. Would you rather be able to teleport or fly?

This is such a hard question because, in my mind, I can see myself, like, floating above streets and my neighborhood and dipping up and down through the clouds. Like, it’s so clear in mind, so the journey would be amazing if I could fly, but then there’s something equally alluring about teleportation and being free of all the frills and bullsh@t. Basically, you just get there, wherever there is. I need to go to Paris — BAM! I’m there. I need to visit my parents in the Philippines — BAM! It’s instantaneous.

But then I wonder, could I teleport with luggage? Would I have to do it naked, like they had to do in Terminator? At least if I could fly I could put all my crap in a backpack or strap my luggage to my torso…

3. Leather or lace?

Lace today because I want to channel the kinder, gentler side of K-dog.

4. Would you rather pay full price now for the LE luxury eye palette of your dreams, or wait a month to get it for 50% off and risk it potentially being sold out?

I don’t like to gamble, but in this case I would take the risk and wait, because deep down inside I am my mother’s daughter, and I love a sale.

Plus, it’s the beauty world, you know, and chances are another dream palette will come along in a month or two or three.

5. What’s the last fear you conquered?

I joined a mom’s group a few months back in the hopes that I’d make more friends, but I wasn’t really successful after the first few event. Well, instead of doing the same thing again, which would have been to go to another event and not talk to anybody, I emailed the president and asked her what I could do to get the most out of the club and make more friends and build a network, and that small act… I mean, it was a small act of bravery for me because I chose not to sit back and let things happen to me, so I felt like I took the reins.

At the next get-together, the president of the group pulled me aside, and we talked for a really long time. She suggested that I join the board (which i’m still considering), gave me her number and said I could call her anytime, and introduced me to a few of the board members.

It got the ball rolling, and I think I’m getting something out of it.

Happy Monday

I’m not always ready to face Monday, but I’m always ready to face Idris Elba. 🙂 I rented a movie last weekend with him and Kate Winslet in it called The Mountain Between Us, and even though it was stressful because it’s basically… I’m not gonna tell you the entire story, but there’s a plane crash, and Idris and Kate have to find their way out of this snowy mountain situation… Anyway, it has Idris and his silky smooth voice.

So, I hope that no matter how many times you find yourself rolling your eyes internally today, you can think of Idris saying, “My darling, you’re gonna be OK. We’re gonna get through this.”

That’s what I’m gonna do today. “We’re gonna make it.” That’s what he said throughout the movie.

Yes, Idris, we’re gonna make it. 🙂

January 21st, 2018 by Karen 16 Comments

Someone struck the jackpot today! Guess who found a Sephora gift card he totally forgot about.

A happy tabby, that’s who.

Catnip-filled Sephora cat gift card…

Tabs got one for Christmas from his favorite pet assistant (*ahem*), but it must have gotten left in the card and packed away. Well he found it this morning, and after dancing around the living room and raising the roof for about 15 minutes of pure cat joy, he plopped down on the carpet and typed up his Sephora wish list.

Right at the top: Bumble & Bumble’s new fur oil. Because a cat’s coat is like a handshake, as you know, and a silky coat is how you make a good first impression.
