What’s Your Skin Story?

March 31st, 2017 by Karen 28 Comments

no makeup
Oh, hello there, bare skin!

You can start anywhere you want, but I think I’ll start at the beginning, because that’s usually a good place to start, to borrow a sentiment from The Sound of Music.

I was lucky. I didn’t have any skin issues when I was very young, but I did started breaking out when I reached the sixth grade. I’d get these little pimples on my forehead, and I remember my mom taking me to a dermatologist, who gave me something called a PanOxyl Bar, which was a soap that smelled awful and bleached all my t-shirts, and a tube of super strong benzoyl peroxide.

They made my skin feel raw, but they kinda helped. Basically, I didn’t know what I was doing, and I didn’t incorporate any moisturizing products. My mom, who has perfect skin, really didn’t know how to help me either.

I pretty much continued to break out through high school, but the breakouts were minor. Just a few small pimples here and there. I used the benzoyl peroxide consistently, and it did help.

But things got more complicated in college. In my second year, I went through some sort of hormonal shift (my acne has always been tied to my hormones), and the few small pimples I’d been dealing with turned into big, painful pimples on my cheeks.

I started taking Accutane, and it was the only thing that really helped. It’s still controversial, and it was even more controversial back then, but it helped me a lot. It cleared up my skin, which remained clear until I hit my mid-30s.

I think that’s when I went through another hormonal shift. I started getting chin acne (but you already know about that).

I’m in my early-40s now with drier skin (which used to be super oily) that’s still acne-prone. I use benzoyl peroxide daily (Kate Somerville Anti-Bac Clearing Lotion), both in the morning and at night.

Now I’m more concerned about evening out my skin tone and dealing with fine lines than I am about preventing and treating breakouts.

I do have some fine lines under my eyes and around my mouth, but I like to attribute them to smiling. 🙂 I guess I smile a lot, because I’ve got the wrinkles to show it, LOL!

10 Things That Go Through Your Head When You Find Hair on Your Chin

March 30th, 2017 by Karen 15 Comments

Girl, you know it’s true
  1. WHAT!? Why is this thing SO STIFF? ?
  2. OK, how long has this been here? Because I swear to god, I just looked at my chin 5 minutes ago, and this wasn’t there.
  3. Am I growing a goatee now?
  4. Where the hell are my good Tweezermans?!
  5. I officially hate seeing my pores in this 15X magnifying mirror.
  6. Would it be lame if I just used Jolene bleach and bleached this sucker into oblivion?
  7. (As I repeatedly fail to pluck it) This thing must have roots, AAARRRGH!
  8. Maybe if I cut it real close with some scissors?
  9. I am officially the hairiest person. My next job will be the bearded lady at the circus.
  10. OH, THANK GOD, it’s out! I got it! I got it! ?

The Unicorn Beauty Trend: Yay or Nay?

March 29th, 2017 by Karen 20 Comments

So how do we feel about the unicorn beauty trend happening now?

In case you haven’t noticed, unicorns have been spotted behind many makeup counters lately. It’s a whole trend. There’s even a unicorn-themed collection happening over at Tarte right now…

Tarte likes unicorns too!

And a while back Too Faced released a lipstick called Unicorn Tears. There’s also a beauty brand called Unicorn Snot (!).

They’re everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Which is a weird thing for a creature that has generally been quite rare…

To me, “unicorn beauty” means all things glitter, holographic and rainbow, and it’s on point right now in makeup, hair and nails.

I’d like to know how you feel about this, because I’m totally conflicted. The part of me that believes that Rainbow Dash is my soulmate is obviously into it, but then another, equally compelling part of me thinks, “I’m a 40-something lady and a mom. Do I really need to revert to the same look I wore to raves in the ’90s?”

Neither side has yet to win this debate. I’m still deliberating. 🙂

For me, I think it’s fun in touches here and there, like a holographic lip, but I gotta be careful not to go overboard.

The unicorn beauty trend — give me your thoughts.

Karen

The Lust List, Vol. 2: Stuff That I Kinda Want

March 28th, 2017 by Karen 39 Comments

Imagine the damage we could do if we won a sweepstakes and had to fill a gigantic, Costco-sized shopping cart with beauty products.

Just imagine… Let that stew for a second.

Meanwhile, here are some things on my latest lust list…

  1. Chanel Le Stylo Yeux Long-Lasting Eyeliner in 88 Noir Intense ($33).

Technically, I’m going to call this one a “need,” instead of a “want,” because I tightline every day, yo! It’s a way of life. And I just ran out of this pencil.

    THE HORROR!

I’m not kidding, every single time I finish one of these pencils I’m shocked, like, what? Another one?! Don’t ask me why I don’t always have a backup.

    Well…it’s because of the price.

  2. Also, AHHH! I’m wanting this Viseart 01 Neutral Matte Eyeshadow Palette so hard.

I’m new to the Viseart brand, but I’ve heard so many great things about it. Every single time I walk by this $80 palette, I’m like, “Shield your eyes, Karen! Walk faster! Look away!” because I’m the last person in the world who needs another matte brown eyeshadow in her life…but yet I STILL WANT IT SO BADLY YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW.

  3. There’s also a Viseart Blush Palette in 2 Rose Coral (also $80) calling my name.

  4. Speaking of brown eyeshadow, this Chantecaille 3 Mermaid Eye Matte trio ($95…OMG!) has three lovely-looking matte cream shadows.

Can we just… “AHHHH!” And the clouds parted…

It has a deep neutral brown that looks like it urgently needs to be on my lids as soon as humanly possible, a soft creamy vanilla and a soft smoky gray.

    WANTS.

  5. So, I’ve actually never smelled Acqua Di Parma Rosa Nobile Eau De Parfum ($130), but it reminds me of the hotel I stayed at when I visited Milan a few years ago. They had Acqua Di Parma bath products, and they smelled so, so good. (Yes, I “borrowed” the soap, girl, and brought it home. I’m that person.)

I also want it because it’s pink. ?

  6. When I got my hair colored a couple weeks ago, the salon had R+Co products, so my stylist friend Alis hooked me up with some samples. She gave me this huge tub — like a big salsa container, HAHA! — of High Dive Moisture + Shine Cream, and when I’m done with it, I’m gonna spring for the full-size $27 tube, because it’s really lovely!

Basically, it’s a smoothing leave-in conditioner that moisturizes and adds shine, but it doesn’t make your hair look greasy or feel weighed down. And it smells AMAZEBALLS, kinda like Bobbi Brown Beach perfume, but without the notes of sunscreen.

I swear, R+Co products…if they sold their scents as eau de parfums, I’d be all over that.

Anywho, I also have a sample size of their Death Valley Dry Shampoo Spray, and holy wow! — it’s great too. Now I also want a $29 full-size bottle of that. It’s one of those dry shampoo sprays with a powder so fine that you don’t even see it on your roots, even if you have dark hair, and it doesn’t make my scalp itch. No greasy roots, either.

  7. And yeah, I’m still on that Smith + Cult train. Now, I think I need their Basis of Everything Base Coat ($18) and Above It All Top Coat ($18), partly because I want to try them, and partly because I keep having this vision of a shelf in my office dedicated to my Smith & Cult polishes, and I want to make that dream a reality.

But today I feel really good. I feel like I just left the nail salon, and my toes are freshly done (although they aren’t). I don’t know why. I feel like I can handle anything today. I can take on the world!

How are you, my friend? I hope you feel good, and if you don’t right now, I hope you feel better soon. Sending you good thoughts and positive vibes. 🙂

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 442

March 26th, 2017 by Karen 8 Comments

My dearest family, frenemies and fellow felines,

As you know, I’ve managed the day-to-day operations at MBB and Tabs the Cat Industries LLC for nearly a decade, and in that time I’ve discovered many effective ways to motivate and manage my employees, all of which I’ll be sharing with the world in my upcoming book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Feline Managers.

Here’s an excerpt from the book, which will be published by Random House in May 2017. As my most beloved fans, I wanted you to get the first glimpse of the greatness.

1. Inspire by example

I firmly believe in leading by example. If you want your employees to be fabulous, you must be fabulous yourself. Don’t come to work looking sloppy and unkempt, like some ragamuffin kitty who just walked in from a street brawl, and expect your employees to take you seriously. Get your fur done. Visit the claw salon on a weekly basis. If your business has a formal dress code, wear a tie.

2. Track productivity

Not to say that you need to track every move your employees make, but I do find it valuable to hold my staff accountable for every minute of every day, just so that I know they’re keeping up with their assigned duties. Some cats install camera systems, which are effective, but I’m old school. I prefer to follow my employees from room to room, thereby sending the message that the boss is always watching.

3. Set expectations

It’s important to establish boundaries in the workplace and clearly define what is and isn’t acceptable behavior. For example, I had an employee — let’s call her “Sharon” — refuse to give me a full-body massage once because she was allegedly “too busy,” so I immediately swatted her with my paw, climbed up on her chest and demanded a deep-tissue massage right then and there. Sharon hasn’t refused a rub-down request since.

Saturday Surfing: March 25, 2017

March 25th, 2017 by Karen 7 Comments

mac extra dimension blush skinfinish april 2017

Meow, kitty cat. Happy Caturday! I hope you slept well last night.

This morning I was awoken by a dainty love bite on my left forearm… It was Tabs reminding me that he runs the show on Caturdays, and it was already 7 o’clock. Time to get up! Hop to it!

OK, so you may want to sit down for this one: we have some news about the MAC permanent line.

(Who gets excited about products being added to the permanent line?! THIS GIRL!)

mac extra dimension blush skinfinish april 2017

I know, we live in a limited edition world, and we’re all mere spectators. We watch as wonderful products gets rotated on and off shelves, so when something great makes its way to the permanent line, especially when it’s in the MAC Extra Dimension formula, I get REALLY excited. Because you can fall in love and stay in love with it without worrying about it leaving you in the lurch someday.

Most of the time. Yeah, I’m still bitter about MAC Kid Eye Shadow being discontinued…

Anywho! MAC is adding 11 new shades of their new Extra Dimension Blush and three Extra Dimension Skinfinishes — one, a shimmery gold you might remember from the MAC Magic of the Night holiday collection a couple years back called Oh Darling. The other two are new.

I’m all about that blush/highlighter life so I’m stoked!

Expect to find these at MAC counters starting April 6th until the end of time…

OK, maybe not until the end of time…but they should be there a while.

In other news, here are some things that caught my eye in beauty news this week, including this — wait for it — BABY SPA.

Yes, it’s a legit spa for babies.

Little babies…not big babies like yours truly, LOL!

  • At the Girls Auto Clinic in Philly, you can get your car serviced WHILE you get a mani. Hell, yeah! I’d take my Mazda there!
  • Whoa! Did you know that Bebe and a whole mess of other stores I worked at and spent way too much money in (like The Limited) are closing? The times, they are a changin’…
  • Crazy cool hair from Tokyo Fashion Week.
  • This is so sweet. Oprah’s long-time makeup artist Reggie Wells glams up seniors in this Baltimore community.
  • Grab a tissue, because this piece on mothers and daughters will give you all the feels.
  • It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to do anything crazy to my hair, but the geode hair trend is giving me the itch again…
  • Um…would you ever (or have you ever) use a hard-boiled egg to apply your foundation?
  • Givenchy revamped their blushes, and they’re gorge.
  • Yes, please! I wanna be a Bronze Goddess.
  • So many creams! So many blues and greens! OPI is heading to Fiji (take me!) with their new spring 2017 collection.
  • The Estée Edit Fluid Metal Shadows look like FUN, FUN, FUN!
  • Here’s the 411 on The Ordinary, a new skincare line getting a lot of buzz.
  • Three words: baby day spa.

And a few videos

To do this weekend: try this hooded eye makeup look.

I’m gonna have to cave and grab a Viseart palette.

In case you were wondering how nail polish is made…

Dupes for high-end products!

Rise and shine, morning glory. I’m just puttering around the house now and trying to figure out everything that I need to get done before I leave the house at 4 with my friend Marisol for a girls night out adventure. We’re heading to a winery in Healdsburg, which is about an hour north of us here in Novato, called Chateau Diana to hang out with other wine-lovin’ ladies.

I’m really looking forward to making convo with new people (and, yes, sipping wine). I’m a social creature.

And after that we’re gonna grab some pizza, and…how could pizza not make someone happy? Seriously, I dunno. It’s one of the best things ever.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, whatever you’re up to.

One word: glitter. I’m just throwing that out there. 🙂

Have a great day. Talk to you later.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Where Do You Usually Paint Your Paws? Do You Have a Special Spot?

March 24th, 2017 by Karen 8 Comments

I wouldn’t call it special, but there are a number of unofficial nail-painting places in my abode.

This is going to sound weird (so what’s new, right?), but one is at my keyboard, so I can paint while I type and multitask at the same time.

But if I’m not doing it there, I’m painting them on the floor in the living room, usually while catching up on Being Mary Jane, The Walking Dead or This Is Us. I lay down a beach towel in case there’s spillage, and I put my painting stuff on top of a magazine.

How about you? Where do you usually paint your paws?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
