Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 373

May 18th, 2015 by Karen 33 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for May 18, 2015
The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for May 18, 2015

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. How comfortable are you when it comes to negotiating discounts?
Um…not very. I’m actually slightly uncomfortable about it, although I can do it when it’s kind of expected, like at garage sales and flea markets, but I don’t really go to those very often (I think I’ve watched one too many horror movies about people buying haunted furniture).

I guess I’m just the type of person who likes to walk into a store, and if something’s a certain price, then alright! Done deal.

  2. What’s one memory you have of summer vacation?
I remember eating a lot of frozen pizza…

Actually, I remember them being really quite boring, to be honest, because both of my parents worked out of the house all day long, so when summers rolled around, my little brother and I had to stay in the house, and we weren’t allowed to really go out because we didn’t have any parental supervision.

We did a lot of (boring sh*t) sitting around, reading and watching TV. Oh — and those frozen pizzas.

During the time when my friend Karrie lived next door, I was allowed to go over there…but we had to stay inside the house.

  3. Have you ever changed a car tire?
I have not. That’s what AAA and Geico are for. 🙂

Sorry to sound like a wuss…but I really don’t want to get dirty.

  4. What’s the best thing your best friend ever taught you?
To ask myself whether the little things that bother me will still bother me in a year. I think that both Jen and Cindy are more patient than I am when it comes to just, like, life’s little aggravations.

I’m a bit more high strung, so when something bugs me, and it bugs me straight off, I’ll ask myself, “Is this really gonna bother me in a year?” and most of the time the answer is no.

    Mostly.

  5. Are you the type to use a different purse with every outfit, or do you tend to use the same purse all the time?
Phases. Sometimes I’ll carry the same purse all the time, especially if it’s big and practical and fits my big camera, and my phone, and all my junk, so I’ll go through phases where I’ll get stuck on using that one purse.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

3. Have you ever changed a car tire?

Good morning and happy Monday! I hope you had a nice weekend, my friend, and hopefully your Monday has gotten off to a good start.

I have a couple of things on my mind this week… First, hair. Tomorrow I’m going to get my hair done, yay! — and I’ve been furiously googling Helena Christensen hair styles. Then on Wednesday my neighbor, who’s a high school senior, is coming over, and we’re gonna do a trial run for her prom makeup.

Yup, I’m gonna be doing her prom makeup this weekend. She wants Kylie Jenner lips (all the kids do) and a warm brown, kind of purply red smokey eye, which I’m totally on board with.

Have a great week, and I’ll talk to you soon. 🙂

My darlings,

Ever since I won my first Oscar, Best Lead Feline in a Meow-tion Picture, for my performance in The Cat’s Speech, the tabloids have been saying that I’ve quit high fashion kitty modeling.

Well, I’m here to set the record straight. I am still, and always will be, first and foremost, a kitty supermodel.

As a matter of fact, just this weekend I shot several jewelry campaigns that will be running in the glossies. Here’s a sneak peek at what you’ll be seeing over the next few months in the pages of Feline Vogue.

Rise and shine, pal o’ mine! Are you feeling Furiosa?

OK, so Mad Max: Fury Road was a riotously good action movie, and Charlize Theron’s Furiosa kicks so much butt, but now that I sit and think about the movie…a lot of it is blurring together. It’s such a visual spectacle of high-octane nonstop action, and everything’s so dusty and dirty and hot, but it’s almost more like listening to heavy metal music while looking at a beautiful painting of the desert than watching a regular movie….if that makes any sense.

In other news, I’m still making progress on Project Get My Sh*t Together, but I haven’t fully gotten it together yet. I did pick up three of these gray ombre milk crates from Target to use in the pink storage shelves in my office, but I haven’t filled them yet. So maybe I’ll work on that this weekend.

Other than that, I don’t know what’s on my agenda yet. Maybe a bicycle ride this afternoon in the Novato hills with El Hub if it warms up a little. It’s not exactly cold, but it has been very windy here. It gets Tabs fired up, I guess because he sees everything moving.

You know how cats are.

How was your week? What was the most surprising or interesting thing that happened?

Prize

  • One (1) MAC eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

  • You must be 18 or older to enter (or otherwise an adult based on your local laws).
  • Your comment can be about anything at all, but here are some ideas if you’re stuck:
    • On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being grandmaster champion, how good are you at puzzle games?
    • What’s one of your favorite non-musical sounds?
    • Who has the most beautiful eyes of anyone you know?
    • Best name for a city or town?
    • How do you feel about wearing purple products (eye makeup, lips, nails, clothing, accessories)?
  • One entry per person.
  • You must use a valid email address to win.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 372

May 11th, 2015 by Karen 40 Comments

all you need is love and a cat
The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for May 11, 2015

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
    • A portable smoothie machine half the size of an iPhone
    • Her wallet, of course, but all of her credit cards and keys will be digitized, so she won’t have to worry about forgetting her ATM card in the machine, and every cash register will use optical scanners and voice recognition.
    • She’ll also definitely have her makeup bag, but it won’t be much different than they are now. Maybe the bag will open by itself, and then, like, cool-@ss rainbow fog will come out, and a special song will play, but she’ll still carry the basics in there, like lipsticks, powder, face brush.

I don’t think it’ll be like The Jetsons, though. Everybody always thinks that by the year 2000-whatever, we’ll have flying cars and teleportation and computers in our brains, but it never happens! I don’t know… I think it’ll be pretty close to the same as it is now for makeup…but what do I know? I talk to my cat. 🙂

      All. The. Time. LOL.

  2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
    4.25
  3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
Probably the one that I had a couple years ago. It was a little longer and a few shades lighter than my hair now — like a caramel brown with lighter golden pieces throughout it.

    k-hourglass-prism-duo-hair

LOVED the color and the style, but oh! — it was hard to maintain. I kept having to go back to the salon because, you know how it is when you have darker hair and you go lighter, it’s kind of a process. I’d spend half the day at the salon every time I’d go in for a touchup.

But it was fun for a while… I might try it again someday.

  4. All you need is love and…
    • …a cat, obviously. 🙂
    • …a cup of hot coffee or tea
    • …eight hours of sleep
    • …a toothbrush
    • …a pair of really great shoes
    • …some spanx
    • …a tub of ice cream
  5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
Eeah. I don’t want to say “a don’t,” because I can totally see myself saying, “Oh, they’re a don’t!” and then falling in love with a fringe bag the next week.

Sooo, a maybe? I don’t know… I love the idea of ’20s-style flapper fringe on a dress, or a cute ankle boot with a little fringe, but I’m not so much into Western-style fringe, like on a jacket or a purse.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
4. All you need is love and…
5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?

Good morning, my friend. I’m still waking up. If you’re fully awake, could I please borrow some of your energy to perk me up? I’m actually on my second cup of tea already, but this will probably be a three-cupper day.

Maybe even a four-cupper.

How was your Mother’s Day? I hope it was really nice. Mine was fun. My brother and I took my mom out to dim sum, and my dad tagged along.

We ordered WAY too much food, too, but you know…that’s how it goes.

Have a wonderful week. I’m really hoping to get more of my housecleaning/office fixing project done because I made a lot of headway last week with the pink shelving, but things sort of tapered off toward the weekend. I just have to get back into it and keep the momentum going.

So that’s one of my main goals. Talk to you soon.

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 346

May 10th, 2015 by Karen 11 Comments

Dear Tabby

Dear Tabby is written by Tabs the cat, widely considered “the world’s first plus-size kitty supermodel.” Founded in mid 2012, it has quickly become the most popular cat advice column on earth — known for its fresh, feline perspective on lifestyle, fashion and style issues affecting cats and humans.

Shelter cat fears showing favoritism at the office

Cat shows office favoritism

DEAR TABBY: I can’t believe I’m actually writing THE Tabs the cat! — or rather, Tabby. You’re a big celebrity where I work. When I told my cat coworkers that I was writing you, they said I was crazy. They all said that you would never respond, but I’m keeping my paws crossed.

Tabby, my name is Sasha, and I’m the director of cat career placement at a local cat charm school and management training facility here in Gainesville (officially, the organization is called the Gainesville ASPCA). It’s my job to help our graduates, who range in age from three-month-old kittens to 18-year-old senior cats looking for a career change, find rewarding careers, and to place them with talented pet assistants in the area.

I love my job, but I see a lot of feline faces come and go, and sometimes that gets me a little sad… I know I’m performing a valuable service in the community, but sometimes I do wish I had an easier job.

Oops! — got a little sidetracked there for a moment.

I wanted to ask you about working with professional pet assistants. I work with about a dozen of them here. We maintain a very large staff, but I’ve grown particularly attached to one of them. Her name is Kelly, and I think she’s just fantastic. She understands my quirks and how I like to take my breakfast at a certain time, keeps the office tidy, and even massages my shoulders when I’m tense.

But as I’ve said, she’s not my only employee. She’s just my favorite.

I would really like to do something special for her — just something small to recognize her exemplary job performance — but I don’t know what’s appropriate. I don’t want to be seen as showing favoritism at the office.

Sincerely,
Sasha

Cat swimming
Always recognize exceptional performance

DEAR SASHA: What a wonderful job you do! I greatly admire career counselors and teachers like you because you’re shaping the future of the entire cat community. Who knows? One of your graduates could go on to become the next Morris, so bravo to you.

Now, about your question… First of all, I actually think it’s perfectly acceptable to show favoritism at the office. In fact, I do it all the time. I employ two full-time executive assistants and an army of part-time personal chefs, nutritionists and massage therapists — not to mention a driver — and I favor whichever one is doing the best job at any given time.

I do this because 1) we’re cats, and we’re allowed to be fickle, and 2) I feel that favoritism of this sort creates a competitive work environment, and competition breeds excellence. I think you’ll find that by rewarding one of your assistants, many of the others will try harder.

Give it a shot. As for appropriate forms of recognition, kitty hugs are nice.

Good gift for a mommy cat

Cat concierge

DEAR TABBY: I think mine is kind of an interesting situation… See, I work literally next door to my mommy cat.

Yeah! It’s kind of weird. I’m the concierge at an apartment building, and my mommy cat works in the building next door to me as a kitty model. Long story short, I was raised there and home-schooled, and then after graduating, I took a job here because it was right next door. Basically, I was looking for my first job and bumped into the head assistant on the sidewalk one day. We had lunch — he prepared tuna — and then he offered me the job.

So now I see my mommy cat every once in a while. We’re both very busy with our careers, though, so it’s not an everyday thing, but we keep in touch.

I had to work today on Mother’s Day, so we couldn’t get together, but we made a date for next week.

I’d like to get her a little something when I see her. Tabby, what’s a good gift for a kitty model?

Respectfully yours,
Brady

Fish oil is the secret to the silkiest fur

DEAR BRADY: Hmm… Well, what kind of modeling does she do? If it’s mainly print, I suggest canned tuna. The fish oil is great for your fur. But if she does runway or TV, then some catnip, or perhaps a crinkly ball, would be nice.

Also, you can never go wrong with a mouse.

Good morning, beautiful! 🙂 I hope you slept well. Now, rub the sleep from your eyes, and give your arms a big stretch, because it’s a sparkling new day.

I’m a little sleepy because I got home late from the concert last night, and just in case you were wondering, my mission to get Jordan Knight to sign my left boob was totally unsuccessful…

Um, you know I’m kidding right!? Although, if this were Jordan Night from the ’90s we were talking about, it would be a totally different story.

A visual reminder in case you forgot:

Yes, that is THE Jordan Knight circa 1992 wearing track pants like they’re capris!!

Remind me to tell you the story behind that picture one of these days…

Anyway, for something different this week, instead of the usual Sephora prize, I’ll be giving away a $50 MAC eGIFT CARD instead. Just to mix things up a bit.

Have a happy Mother’s Day weekend (one word: BRUNCH), and best of luck in the giveaway. I’ll talk to you soon.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 371

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll
The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. On a scale of 1-10, how skilled are you with your hair (with 10 being salon-caliber fancy updos and intricate braids)?
Well, based on the stylish way I’ve been wearing my hair lately, otherwise known as “The Mop,” I should probably say a negative 10, but no, no, I think I’m a little better than that when I put in the effort… So maybe a six or seven? If I’m trying.

I can do a few different updos and braids, like the messy reverse French braid I was wearing a couple months ago.

  2. Flower crowns: do or don’t?
It seems like they get a lot of flak sometimes, but they’re a do for me. I think they’re fun and playful, and even though they sort of dominate the music festival circuit, I wish they would also dominate regular life, because I would not mind it if women walked around everywhere with flower crowns. I think it would be kind of pretty.
  3. What’s something you do at least once a day?
    • Feed Tabs some wet food, because if he doesn’t get at least a taste of gravy, he gets very vocal and crabby.
    • Brush my teeth
    • Drink water
    • Check my emails
    • Go online
    • Put on lotion
    • Go outside to breathe some fresh air
    • Open a window
    • A little cleaning, believe it or not
    • Fill in my brows
    • Have a cup of tea (usually green tea in the morning and afternoon and Sleepy Time Tea at night)
    • Clean off my desk
    • I also go through phases (and I’m in one now) where I change some element of my outfit at least once a day, which I want to do at this very moment because I’m currently uncomfortable.
  4. What were you like as a child?
Very shy and quiet and happy. 🙂 And artistic, too, which wasn’t highly valued in my family…but let’s not even go there now right meow.
  5. What’s a kind of music you just don’t get?
’70s rock, but I think that’s partly because I haven’t been exposed to a lot of it. What I have heard, though, hasn’t really connected with me yet.

Sometimes when El Hub and I go on our road trips up to Redding, California, we’ll listen to classic rock stations (which they have a lot of up there), and I’ll hear a song and say, “I’ve never heard this song before,” and it’ll be by Pink Floyd or something, and El Hub will turn his head to me with a look of complete shock. “I can’t believe you’ve never heard this song before!”

Nope. And I’m sorry, but it’s not doing anything for me either.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

1. On a scale of 1-10, how skilled are you with your hair (with 10 being salon-caliber fancy updos and intricate braids)?
2. Flower crowns: do or don’t?
3. What’s something you do at least once a day?
4. What were you like as a child?
5. What’s a kind of music you just don’t get?

Hello, friend. Here’s a hug, one from me and one from Tabs. He asks that you pet him for a bit, but please don’t mind when he starts to look slightly annoyed. That’s just how he looks on Monday mornings.

I hope you had a nice weekend. I have to admit I’m still in weekend mode… I haven’t quite gotten into gear yet. I think I’ll definitely need a second, and probably also a third, cup of green tea.

The weekend went by way too fast… On Saturday night we watched the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight with some friends. I’m kind of bummed about how it turned out, but it was still fun to get together. And then yesterday I just did a lot of high-intensity relaxing around the house.

I started watching this cool BBC documentary series on Netflix called Egypt. It’s part documentary, part, sort of, Lifetime Channel historical movie. 🙂 Anyway, I’ve been totally sucked in.

I hope you’re having an easy, calm Monday so far. I’ll be right back… Can I bring you a cup of tea? Something with caffeine, perhaps?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The Tabs Diaries: Uncensored

Dear Diary,

Wow, it’s been a while! I’ve missed you so much, diary. Things have been craaay on this end. I’ve still been writing — don’t you worry about that — but admittedly not enough here.

I’ll explain in a bit, but first… Gosh, where do I start?

Well, I guess I’ll start at the beginning of my day! My new trainer had me doing wind sprints up and down the stairs as part of my daily workout.

It’s all about getting fit for summer, and I’ve been working out like a fiend, diary. I mean, it’s already May! Can you believe that? And that means that bikini season is right around the corner, and that means that I have to get freaking fit NOW. As you know, I have a reputation to uphold in the cat modeling world, and I’m already fully booked through summer.

Plus, I have this beefcake calendar coming out… Don’t judge.

Getting bikini ready

Just chillin'

Thank goodness for my trainer! He’s actually the guy who created Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry’s agility training program, and he’s got me on an intense regimen of kitty squats, crinkly ball chasing, air pawing and circuit training, where I run circles around the office and then leap from the floor up to the top of my cat tower to tone my haunches.

I really feel it in my back paws…

It’s great stuff, but exercise is definitely not one of my favorite things to do, so I’ve started bribing myself with accessories to stay motivated, and it really works! I got the idea from my assistant who does it all the time. All I do is tell myself that I can get one of those new lightweight linen cat collars from Burberry (I can’t wait to post about it on my new website, but wait! — I’m getting ahead of myself) if I exercise every day this week.

Summer season accessories

Tabs for Burberry

It’s a form of meow-based mental trickery.

I’m also… Well, my ninth birthday is coming up, and I’ve been thinking a lot about… I don’t know, I guess, my legacy? I’m getting older, and I’m not a kitten anymore.

Along those lines, earlier this year I started my scholarship for young kitty models who want to make a change in their life, and I’m also trying to give back to the kitty modeling community by writing my memoirs.
