Good morning. 🙂 Hello there, sweet friend.

I’m just sittin’ here at my breakfast table listening to the thundering of little tabby feet running around upstairs. I have no idea what he’s doing up there, but it sounds like a competitive decathlon.

I’ve got a stack of magazines here, a hot cup of green tea and my Pink Power Smoothie, and I’m just gonna sit here for a while and read.

Ah… I love Saturdays. I love the quiet time for breakfast and to be able to sort of ease slowly into the day. The rest of the week, it’s go, go, go from the moment I open my eyes, but Saturday mornings are about high-intensity relaxing. 🙂

In other news, I’m going to tackle another section of the house today and tomorrow as part of Operation Get My Sh*t Together, and I’m also going to go to Target to see if I can find some of those photo shelves, so I can finally put my stuff up on the walls.

I hope you have a wonderful Saturday and a fantastic weekend. Tonight I’m heading to my pal Bernadette’s house (she’s an AMAZING cook!) to watch the Pacquiao v. Mayweather fight (go Pac!). Honestly, I’m going mostly for the food and the company…but El Hub will provide sports commentary as the resident boxing enthusiast.

You don’t even know how many conversations I’ve had to listen to over the past week on the fine points of Pacquiao v. Mayweather.

What are you up to? Doing anything fun?

    • Something that makes you weirdly emotional?
    • What lip formula do you wear the most (balm, gloss, stain, lipstick, etc.)?
    • What’s the fastest you can do your makeup? 5? 10? 15? 20 minutes?
  • One entry per person.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 370

April 27th, 2015 by Karen 60 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Have you ever seen someone in real life who looks like they could be your twin/doppelgänger?
I wish! And if I did, I would definitely take a twinsies selfie of us with my phone.

Someday, it’ll happen…and it will be awesome. Hopefully she’ll be a cat lady, too.

Sometimes I will hear that I look like somebody’s sister or aunt or mom, or like Reese Witherspoon, which I take as a total compliment because I think she’s adorable.

  2. What do you think of the new Apple Watch, and would you wear it?
Gurl, I walked by the Apple Store yesterday (on my way to the Chanel counter), and I didn’t even want to go inside and take a look. I just… I have my good ‘ol watch with, like, the dial and the two little hands, and that’s all I need.

I just feel like I already carry my phone with me all over the place, and I don’t really need a smart watch to tell me what’s already on my phone.

  3. Sometimes when I open my mouth…
…crazy cat lady stuff comes out.

VERY crazy cat lady stuff — so crazy that even I’m surprised I say it, like, “It’s kitten season!” which I say every single time we drive by the Marin County Humane Society.

El Hub is so sick of hearing it. He’ll say, “Sweetie! Every season is kitten season!”

    And I’ll just nod. “I know.” 🙂

  4. Do you see yourself as more of a bohemian, or a glamour gal?
This one’s tough because I like the relaxed ease of the bohemian look, but I don’t really feel like it’s 100% me…because I’m not all that relaxed. I definitely see myself as more of a glamour gal. I feel more comfortable when I’m a little more dressed up and put together. I think that’s more my style.

  5. What do you typically wear to work?
Well, here at Tabs the Cat Industries LLC, the dress code is very strict (not really). Although it’s tempting to wear workout clothes all the time, mostly I dress as though I’m going to a regular office. It just helps get me in the mindset of what I’m gonna do for the day, so I guess you could call it business casual. Right now I’m wearing a cute pair of chambray scalloped shorts and a kind of secretary-ish sleeveless blouse because it’s supposed to be hot here today.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

1. Have you ever seen someone in real life who looks like they could be your twin/doppelgänger?
2. What do you think of the new Apple Watch, and would you wear it?
3. Sometimes when I open my mouth…
4. Do you see yourself as more of a bohemian, or a glamour gal?
5. What do you typically wear to work?

Hi, friend. This is random, but do you want some cilantro? My little deck garden is slowly but surely coming along, and my cilantro plant is by far dominating all of the other herbs.

So cilantro is in the house.

I hope you’re doing well today. I’m feeling much better — like, emotionally. I know that sounds goofy, but it’s true (thank you again for your kindness and support).

I’ve been making a lot of headway on Operation Get Your Sh*t Together. I did a bunch of things that I’ve been wanting to do but just haven’t done, like I removed a tall, narrow bookshelf that wasn’t much help, moved my desk to a different side of the room, and I ordered this HUGE behemoth of a shelving system.

This is probably gonna sound crazy…but it’s pink.

Hot pink.

And it’s made out of stainless steel.

So, I don’t know if it exactly reads “office chic,” but I found it on Amazon, and it’s not crazy expensive. Hopefully it alleviates some of my storage issues.

Anyway, enough about that! Have a great day today, and I’ll talk to you soon.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 344

April 26th, 2015 by Karen 4 Comments

Dear Tabby

Dear Tabby is written by Tabs the cat, widely considered “the world’s first plus-size kitty supermodel.” Founded in mid 2012, it has quickly become the most popular cat advice column on earth — known for its fresh, feline perspective on lifestyle, fashion and style issues affecting cats and humans.

Cat questions canine comparisons

What a dog-like cat

DEAR TABBY: What does it mean when someone says, “He’s so dog-like”?

Yeah! I hear it all the time, and they usually say it like it’s a compliment, like, “Oh, that’s so cute! He’s just like a dog…” And I’ll be, like, walking around the neighborhood on my leash when some random stranger will say it.

I mean, nothing against dogs… You know, whatever. Some of my coworkers are dogs, and we work together… It’s fine. I have no problem with dogs. They do their thing, you know, with the slobbering and the sniffing. Whatever. I just don’t see the resemblance at all.

Seriously, Tabby, should I be offended, or am I missing something here?

Thank you,
Fiddles

Cat swimming
Just because I like my leash doesn’t make me a cocker spaniel

DEAR FIDDLES: The same thing happens to me all the time! Yeah, I don’t get it either, but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. I think it actually might be somehow related to the leash, because that seems to be when it happens, when I’m wearing my leash, but I don’t know if it’s a style thing, like if some canine celebrity is rocking my same leash, or something else.

But it does seem to happen a lot when I’m either walking with my assistant on my leash, or waiting at the front door with my leash to go outside.

I guess just try not to take it personally, if you can.

Mature mouser has problems with privacy

Kittens today...

DEAR TABBY: Gah! These kittens today, always with their lion cuts and Twitters and Instagrams. They don’t know which way is up!

There is such a thing as too much sharing. You’re a pro, Tabby, but some of these young kittens just don’t get it. They don’t understand. They don’t realize that once it’s out there in the cloud, it’s forever. It could be five years from now in a job interview, and they’ll find that picture of you drinking those catnip shots. Selfies are the downfall of society!

My nieces and nephews are constantly posting things like that on the Facebooks. How can I get them to stop?

With friendly thanks and best wishes,
Bartholomew

I ordered this necklace online

DEAR BARTHOLOMEW: You gotta lighten up, man! There’s no turning back the clock. These kittens are growing up in a wired world. Sure, sometimes I worry about privacy, but there’s already so much info out there. All you can really do for the kittens is remind them to be careful and use common sense.

As for technology itself, it can be really fun! I encourage you to get one of your nieces or nephews to help you create an Instagram account. Once you get to understand it better, you might even enjoy yourself.

Comment to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora

Rise and shine, morning glory. Happy caturday. 🙂 Thank you for all of your kinds words and encouragement this week and for letting me lean on you for a bit. Maybe someday I can return the favor. I get teary every single time I go into the comments on the Quick Hello post from a few days ago.

I’m feeling a lot better already, partially because I’ve made some headway on cleaning my office. I mean…it still looks like a hornet’s nest, but I have done a lot of purging and a little reorganizing, so one step is better than no steps, I guess.

I hope that you’re having a nice morning so far. What are you up to over there?

I’m just going to continue my office cleaning project and maybe (probably) play with some makeup. I do have to hit up the dollar store and The Container Store a little later, but that’s about it. That’s what I’m doing this weekend.

But right now I’m having breakfast. I made more of those Flourless Thumbprint Oatmeal Cookies (yum!) and some scrambled eggs. And some chai tea, which I’m very excited about. 🙂

Have a great weekend, my friend. Talk to you soon.

A Quick Hello…

April 23rd, 2015 by Karen 201 Comments

Hello, sweet friend…

Hello, sweet friend. Happy Thursday to ya. I hope things are going well on your end of the keyboard.

I know that I’ve been kind of MIA this week, but it’s just… I’m going through some things.

I wish I could say that I’ve been playing hooky and having exciting adventures, but truth be told, it hasn’t been like that. It’s just that I’m turning 40 in June, and I’m going through… I don’t think it’s a crisis, but it’s definitely something.

I woke up yesterday morning and realized — holy crap! — my 30s are over. Like, totally and officially over.

It seems like just yesterday I was celebrating my thirtieth. (We went to a drag queen karaoke bar! You know how I roll. 🙂 *snaps*). Now it’s 10 years later, just like that. I’m emotionally very tender right now…

It’s a bunch of different things, like not having children, and babe, seriously…I don’t know what’s going on with me. It’s like, I can’t even look at babies right now without getting teary.

For the longest time, I wasn’t sure if I was meant to be a mom, and I didn’t really think about it much. I just kept myself busy working on different projects like people do, but now I really, really, REALLY want to have a child.

But I waited so long…

I feel like such a fool. I let my prime childbearing years pass me by, and now whenever El Hub and I even start to talk about it, I get super emotional. 🙁 It’s deep, intense and real.

Aaaand, that’s just part of it. I’m also tired of living in disarray. My office is a cluttered mess, and my house needs attention.

If you saw my office — and I don’t want to share a picture of it because there’s nothing cute about it — you’d be amazed that I actually manage to get anything done.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 369

April 20th, 2015 by Karen 26 Comments

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. What’s your take on ruffles?
I like them in moderation… I’ll take one or two dainty, well-placed ruffles, perhaps around the hem of my shirt or the edges, but I can’t handle it when they’re all gigantic, or when there’s 25 ruffles everywhere.

And I don’t like ruffles on my sleeves. It’s too Captain Jack Sparrow for me.

  2. Would you rather wear a necklace or earrings?
Ouch, that’s a tough one… I guess if I had to choose, I’d pick necklace. I love wearing earrings too — studs, hoops, dangly earrings — but I’m in a necklace phase right now, especially statement necklaces. I love the statement necklaces from Kate Spade, and Kristin Perry makes some really cute ones (or these lady bugs!).

I also recently started getting into this store called LOFT, and they’ve got some cute necklaces, too.

  3. How did you feel about your hair growing up?
    Uh…I don’t think I really liked it. My hair and I had a love-hate relationship until I was about 22 or 23.

When I was a kid, I had some really bad haircuts. This one time, my grandma, after she decided to go to the beauty school at the community college, learned how to perm, and she somehow talked my mom into giving me a terrible poodle perm.

It looked like…I dunno. The curls were so tight, and my hair was so short. I had a bowl cut to start, and then she put the poodle perm in it, and it was just a mess. I think I was four or five.

Then when I was in third grade, my mom made me get a boy’s short haircut, yay!

I ended up looking like all of my Filipino uncles…

  4. Have you ever drawn a fake mole on your face?
I have. I drew a fake mole on my face when I dressed up as Madonna for Halloween years ago. I also went through a phase in high school where I drew one just above my lip, because back then Cindy Crawford was really popular.
  5. If you had your own store in a perfect location, what would you sell?
Posh cat toys for the discriminating cat lady. Think Kate Spade meets Petco.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

3. How did you feel about your hair growing up?
4. Have you ever drawn a fake mole on your face?

Hello, sweet friend. Good morning! 🙂 It’s Monday… Wake up!

I’m having a hard time gettin’ going today. I didn’t sleep well last night. I stayed up late watching Game of Thrones and this show called Girls on HBO (HBONow has a free 30-day trial where you can watch everything HBO online, which is what we’re doing). I just started watching it last week, and now I can’t freaking stop.

I hope you had a nice weekend. I got a lot of gardening stuff done on my deck. It’s coming along nicely. I planted a whole bunch of tomato plants and basil plants and flowers and sweet peppers, but now there’s just, like, dirt all over the place. It’s almost done, though, so that’s exciting.

Anywho…have a nice day today and a great week. Talk to you soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 343

April 19th, 2015 by Karen 6 Comments

Urban cat wants to commune more with nature

Apartment cat living

DEAR TABBY: I work in a small space in the city. I telecommute from home, from a tiny apartment, and I primarily work in the online space. Thing is, with Earth Day coming up, I’ve been trying to think of ways to bring more of the outdoors inside and get back to my outdoor roots. I was wondering if you had any suggestions. What can I do to get in touch with nature?

Love,
Beignet

Cat swimming
You can’t go wrong with zinnia

DEAR BEIGNET: Cat-friendly flowers! They’re one of the most beautiful ways to commune with nature and purr-fect for small offices.

If you can, enlist your assistant’s help. Have him or her visit your nearby gardening store with a list of cat-friendly flowers upon which you’ll be able to snack or otherwise enjoy. My favorites are snapdragons, gerbera daisies, zinnia, and the very tasty echinacea.

Entrepreneur seeks business advice

Cat entrepreneur

DEAR TABBY: I’m a stray cat, or as I like to put it, an independent contractor. I’ve been working for myself for a really long time, and I think I’ve been pretty successful at it, but the thing is, my empire is growing, and I just don’t have enough paws to cover all my bases.

Things are starting to slip through the cracks; I can’t answer all of my phone calls, and I’m just not working effectively anymore. I realize that I need help. So, Tabby, my question for you is this: how do I go about hiring an assistant? I have no idea where to start.

Sincerely,
Teacup

kittenhood bonds
Delegate, delegate, delegate

DEAR TEACUP: First of all, congratulations on growing your business! It sounds like you’ve reached the point where hiring an assistant makes total sense, and there’s a myriad of ways to go about it. Some cats use Craigslist, but I can’t recommend it. I just think there are some significant quality control issues in their cat employment area.

You could canvas the neighborhood. That’s what I did. I went door to door and meowed in front of every apartment in my former complex to get to know my neighbors. It was sort of my way of conducting casual interviews.

But I think the easiest way is to ask for referrals. Talk to your cat and human acquaintances because they might know somebody who needs an assisting job.

You never know. Get out there, put out your feelers, and start networking. Good luck!

Comment to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

April 18th, 2015 by Karen 425 Comments

** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, MARISA!!!), but check back next Saturday for another Sephora giveaway.

Win a $50 Sephora e-card

Rise and shine, morning glory. It’s caturday! 🙂

Today’s forecast calls for patchy morning fog, clearing up to sunshine and temps in the low-to-mid 70s by the afternoon. Your nephew is currently perched behind me on the living room windowsill.

Actually, he hasn’t gone outside yet this morning because I’ve only been up for a few minutes, and you know his routine… He’s gotta inspect the hillside first thing every morning before the neighborhood hustle and bustle gets going, so he’s not pleased about this current deviation from his regular schedule.

What did do last night? Did you do anything fun? We just went to a movie down the street. Danny Collins, Starring Al Pacino and Annette Bening? It’s the old aging rocker motif, but I always like those. It’s interesting to see how famous people interact with the world. It seems like a very lonely life sometimes, even with all the perks.

Today I’m just staying around the house, maybe going to Blue Barn to get a salad for lunch, but I have to — or at least I really want to — finish setting up my deck garden. We’re making this the Summer of the Tomato, so we have to clean out the old pots from last year, top off the pots with fresh potting mix, and get some plants started. El Hub brought home seven huge bags of potting mix the other day, so it’s time to get a little dirty. 🙂

Other than that, I don’t know… Maybe planning for one or two trips. We’ve been thinking about going to Tahoe again, and maybe the Big Island. Maybe a quick trip to Portland, too, because we have some friends up there.

Gotta take the time to actually make the plans, though; otherwise, it’ll be October before we know it.

I hope you have a great weekend, my friend. Good luck in the giveaway, and I’ll talk to you soon.
