Adele: Her Best Hair?

February 15th, 2012 by Karen 29 Comments

Adele: Her Best Hair?

Sometimes, like when you’re Adele Laurie Adkins of Tottenham, North London, 19 plus 21 equals eight.

Eight — for the number of Grammy awards the 23-year-old contralto has already won. Two for her debut album, 19, named for her age at the time she started recording it, and six more for her second album, 21.

Born May 5, 1988, Adele has been on fire this winter, despite stormy weather late last year. A scary vocal cord hemorrhage that led to surgery forced her to take more than three months off to recover, but her performance during the Grammy Awards last weekend showed the world that she and her soulful, world-weary yet life-affirming voice are back.

Just two weeks ago, her single, Set Fire to the Rain (one of my favorite running songs!), became the third number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 from her album, 21, making her the first artist in history to have an album hold the number one spot on the Billboard 200 concurrently with three separate singles at number one.

It’s amazing to me that someone so young can sing country-flavored music and bluesy tunes with so much soul. Even more amazing when you consider that she didn’t grow up listening to country music at all.

She was introduced to contemporary Nashville music in 2008 by her bus driver while on tour in the South. “It was really exciting for me because I never grew up around [that music],” she says.

Adele counts artists from many genres, including country, among her musical influences, also citing the Spice Girls, Pink, Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child and Mary J. Blige.

About a live performance by Pink at Brixton Academy some years back, Adele says it was one of the most defining moments in her life. “It was the Missundaztood record,” she says, “so I was about 13 or 14. I had never heard, being in the room, someone sing like that live […] I remember sort of feeling like I was in a wind tunnel, her voice just hitting me. It was incredible.”

I’m really looking forward to her next album. 24, perhaps? 🙂

Which of Adele's hairstyles do you like best?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 207

February 13th, 2012 by Karen 55 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Wiggly? Is that a mood? I’m having a tough time settling down this morning, but I gotta get cracking on a few things. Time’s a wastin’!

  3. Something people are surprised to learn about you?
  4. When I meet people that I’ve come to know online, they’re often surprised by my height, or lack thereof (I’m just 5-feet-one without heels), and my voice. I’m not sure why about the voice (I sound like this), but it happens a lot.

  5. What’s one part of your beauty routine that you really enjoy?
  6. I love, LOVE getting my hair cut and dyed. It’s just so relaxing to hang out at the beauty salon for a few hours, ya know? Chat and read magazines. Heaven!

  7. Has a relative ever tried to set you up on a date?
  8. Ugh! When I was in my 20s, my mom must have tried to pawn me off on every available doctor in Northern California. None of the dates ever panned out, though (thank gawd!).

  9. Pickles: yum or gross?
  10. Yum, if they’re the sweet and crunchy kind.

  11. Can you cook?
  12. Eh, I’m okay, at best. I can put together something edible and tasty, but I don’t think I’ve ever prepared a full meal from start to finish that made anyone’s eyes roll back in their head from ecstasy (I wish!).

  13. A memory about your childhood home?
  14. I remember there being a little nook in the hallway where my parents kept a small picture of The Last Supper, a few bottles of holy water and various other somewhat scary (to a child) Catholic bits. I remember it always terrifying me for some reason, so I’d sort of sprint by it down the hall.

  15. What would make you happier?
  16. Well, I think I’m pretty happy now, but I’d love to be better about managing my time. Sometimes I feel like I take longer to do things than I should.

  17. What’s your favorite kind of music?
  18. Oh, I could never pick just one. I like a little bit of everything. Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of pop, hip hop and some country thrown in for good measure.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. To sneak in a run every day, to work on managing my time, to eat a salad every day, and to organize a few lunch dates with girlfriends.

Have you ever left for work or gone to an event, and then, an hour or so after leaving the house, realize that your bra feels itchy and uncomfortable?

Gah! It’s happened to me so many times it’s ridiculous, so now I stash emergency bras all over the place, because you just never know when you’ll need a change.

Yesterday, I was cleaning out my car and found one in the glove compartment that I’d forgotten about.

“Hmm… How’d this get here?

Haha!

Random, I know, but it’s been one of those Mondays. 🙂

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Something people are surprised to learn about you?
3. What’s one part of your beauty routine that you really enjoy?
4. Has a relative ever tried to set you up on a date?
5. Pickles: yum or gross?
6. Can you cook?
7. A memory about your childhood home?
8. What would make you happier?
9. What’s your favorite kind of music?
10. Weekly goals:

Hope that your start of the week hasn’t been too shabby, tabby, and that you’ll swing by and say hello!

Is pet assisting right for you?

If you’re considering a career in the exciting, fast-paced world of celebrity pet assisting, let me tell ya — it’s not all glitz and glam.

International Association of Professional Pet AssistantsSure, there are advantages, like travel. One week it’s Paris to “get the gravy situation in order.” Next week it’s Napa Valley for fresh organic catnip.

But for all its perks, you do have to sacrifice a lot…

First, you can kiss your weekends goodbye, because celebrity pet employers basically own your @ss. And yes, I speak from experience.

Today was supposed to be my first Sunday off in weeks, and I had plans to go for a hike before catching a late movie with El Hub.

As often happens, I had my hand on the doorknob when I received a text from Tabs. In it, he said it was “of the utmost importance” that I organize his vast collection of accessories by color and ribbon width, and it absolutely, positively had to be done by tonight.

Big surprise.

He also insisted that I take some pics of him to give to his stylist, who then, after checking with our focus group, would color coordinate his outfits for the upcoming awards season.

So I’ve basically spent my entire afternoon with a diva kitty supermodel wrapped in a rainbow of ribbons.

Le sigh!

Here’s a look behind the scenes at some of the outtakes…

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

February 12th, 2012 by Karen 10 Comments

Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

Next time you make it out here to the San Francisco Bay Area, see if you can squeeze in a meal at one of the cute little restaurants on SF’s Claude Lane. It’s a small area with a European vibe (plenty of outdoor seating) a little off the beaten path about two blocks from Union Square. Just a couple of quaint cafes and restaurants, but I think it’s well worth checking out.

I had dinner there the other night at a spot called Gitane with my girlfriends from college, Christine, Eleanor and Mary Anne.

My first real job after college was at a company about one block away from the restaurant, and as I was walking from where I’d parked to meet the girls, I passed a few familiar haunts.

Back when I had that job, I was in my early 20s and very unsure of where I was headed in life or what the future held. I never could have imagined I’d ever be sitting at a desk in the town of Novato with a chubby tabby cat on my lap as I typed something like this to you…

It’s just weird! But also cool.

As I got closer to the restaurant the other night, I wondered, should I find myself walking down these same streets 10 years from now, what will I be up to then? Will I have children? Will I run into any old friends and share stories about how little Paul or Alexandra love art and music, but my parents think they should both be doctors? Or will I not have children? And will I be okay with that decision?

I don’t know… I just hope that wherever I am and whatever I’m doing, I’m happy. And you are, too. 🙂

  • WINNER: The giveaway is closed now, and the winner is LL! Congratulations, LL! If you entered but didn’t win this time around, keep trying, and click here to enter any ongoing giveaways before you jet. 🙂

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

Rise and shine, morning glory! 🙂 I hope you had a wonderful week. No complaints out here. Last night I even spent a little time shopping — online, for things to help me with one of my New Year’s resolutions.

Yup, I’m still on a mission to stop dressing like a 15-year-old skater boy (a hard habit to break, apparently), and I found a couple of pricey possibilities at Anthropologie.

What do ya think of this romper and trench?

Leifsdottir Scattered Wing Romper on the left ($168) and Tulip-Hem Trench on the right ($298)

Cute, yeah? I really love the romper, but I don’t know… Sometimes I wonder if things like rompers have an upper age limit that I might have passed.

I also love the jacket, but I wish it came in a different color. I’d have this one covered in makeup and cat hair in about a hot minute.

OOH! I came across a new designer (well, new to me) on the Nordstrom site that I wanted to ask you about. Are you familiar with Presley Skye? She (he?) has these soft, flowy dresses in colorful, springy prints (can you tell I’m ready for spring?).

Presley Skye Silk Kimono Sleeve Faux Wrap Dress on the left ($138) and Print Crêpe de Chine Dress ($138) on the right

Those dresses look so comfy, and if I’m smiling this much just looking at pictures of ’em, I can only imagine what wearing one would do to me.

Is it spring yet?

No? Well, at least it’s giveaway time. 🙂

Win a $50 gift card from Sephora

  • One (1) Sephora eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

  • There are two ways to enter, and you can do both of them for two chances to win. First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, a comment about anything at all, like, how do you feel about rompers? What’s one piece of makeup you own but never wear? Do you like lipglosses that tingle? Can you do a pushup? What’s your latest drugstore beauty crush? Twinkies or Snowballs? — you get the idea.
  • Second, you can enter by following me on twitter Twitter @karenmbb and retweeting (RT) the following message:
    • Follow @karenmbb and RT to Win a $50 eGift Card from Sephora! http://bit.ly/ygeQiN

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 206

February 6th, 2012 by Karen 72 Comments

Keep looking up…

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Well, I’m on the cusp between fussy and glad. I’ve been fighting a cold since yesterday and still feel a little run down, so I’m gonna try to take it easy today.

  3. How do you feel about teal eyeliner?
  4. I feel great about it. 🙂 Not so much now in the middle of winter, but definitely in the spring and summer, especially paired with orange lips.

  5. The name of a perfume you own but never wear?
  6. Chanel No. 5. I received a bottle as a gift some years back, and I’ve always liked the scent, but I still don’t quite feel like it fits me yet. I keep it, though, because I seem to like it more and more every year.

  7. Have you ever noticed…
  8. …all of the ads catering to cat ladies in Real Simple magazine? Seriously, it’s almost like every other page has something to do with kitty litter, wet food or removing cat hair from the couch.

I guess their readership includes a high percentage of cat ladies (myself included, haha!).

  9. A scent that reminds you of your teenage years?
  10. Bath & Body Works Juniper Breeze… I must have gone through 50 gallons of that stuff.

  11. Where’s your favorite place to nap?
  12. Either downstairs on the couch or upstairs on the floor in my office (next to Tabs, of course).

Funny, but I just realized that I never actually nap in my bed.

  13. What’s the best thing about Mondays?
  14. I like the idea of Mondays as a fresh start.

  15. How’s your hair today?
  16. Not bad. I straightened it yesterday and haven’t washed it yet, so it isn’t frizzy, which is good, and my bangs are behaving (I’m thinking about growing them out).

  17. What’s the most important thing you look for in a lipgloss besides color?
  18. Moisture. I need a ton of it because my lips get very dry.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. I’m tempering my ambitions this week, so I just want to take it easy, get plenty of rest, and keep this cold at bay, if possible.

How about you? How are you doing this morning? Did you have a good weekend? I hope you were able to carve out some “me” time for yourself (it’s important).

Tabs is sitting here next to my desk watching the birds in the oak tree outside the window and purr-chirping up a storm!

I wish I felt a little better right now and we could all hang out today and do something fun (like a museum, a makeup counter or a movie), but since technology hasn’t quite gotten us there yet, for now at least, the Monday Poll will have to do. 🙂

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. How do you feel about teal eyeliner?
3. The name of a perfume you own but never wear?
4. Have you ever noticed…
5. A scent that reminds you of your teenage years?
6. Where’s your favorite place to nap?
7. What’s the best thing about Mondays?
8. How’s your hair today?
9. What’s the most important thing you look for in a lipgloss besides color?
10. Weekly goals:

Let’s take a couple of deep, cleansing breaths together, babe. In and out. In and out. Ah…

All together now, “Today is the start of a great week.” 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Tabs for the Laura Mercier Orange County Kitty Compact

Wow, what a game, right? Kittybowl 2012 was off the hook! I can hardly believe it. Our husky tabby finally won a championship! And talk about Cinderella stories, too. A kitten from the mean streets of Mill Valley grows up dreaming of fashion and football, gets traded to the Novato Tigers, and then wins both the game and the MVP?

See, dreams really do come true.

I just got off the phone with him (he says to say “meow”). Apparently, that sack he took in the second quarter looked worse than it really was. He says he’s doing fine, and he’s getting ready to go out and celebrate with the rest of the team.

He also wanted to remind me to order his championship collar in size XXL (of course).

I swear, that cat is amazing. Not only is he a professional athlete, actor and philanthropist, he’s also a world-renowned kitty supermodel! And here are some pics from his portfolio this week. 🙂
