The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

January 22nd, 2012 by Karen 12 Comments

Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

So this is winter, huh? Gotta say, not a fan.

Yup, the rain returned this morning, but it’s not one of those productive rains that refills reservoirs and builds up the snow pack in the mountains. This is just a faint freezing drizzle that makes me want to stay indoors and drives Tabs out of his ever-lovin’ mind.

How’s it going out yonder way? I’m not really feeling up to writing transitions this morning, so here are just a couple of non-makeup and makeup-related things I’ve been liking lately…

Whatever you’re up to, I hope you have a great day. 🙂

Southland It’s baaack! The new season of one of my favorite shows just started, and I think it’s one of the most underrated hours on TV.

It’s a police drama, but if you like police dramas, give it a try. It has some pretty interesting, complex characters, great acting and cool story lines. Plus, it stars cutie pie Benjamin McKenzie, and starting this season, Lucy Liu, too, who I think did a great job in last week’s season premiere.

Food trucks Right now they’re HUGE in San Francisco. I haven’t been to one lately, but I keep wanting to go.

There’s this weekly food truck jamboree thing called Off the Grid where a bunch of food trucks all meet at the same time and place in the city, and now they’re introducing an Off the Grid up here where I live in Marin County, huzzah!

Underworld Awakening Okay, I have no idea why they keep making these movies because I think they went downhill fast after the first one, but I’m a big Milla Jovovich Kate Beckinsale fan (I always get those ladies confused). I have to see it. Can’t resist.

Sunday Riley and Edward Bess I’m intrigued by both of these lines. Sunday Riley is new at Barney’s New York, and Sephora recently started carrying Edward Bess. I love how elegant both of them look from the packaging, so these are tops on my list of new things to try.

If I do venture out of the house this afternoon, I’ll have to be very careful, though, because another makeup monster has been spotted in the area (possibly the last makeup monster in this series). I should be okay… The authorities are saying that it only targets people wearing false eyelashes, and I didn’t plan on wearing any today.

MAKEUP MONSTERS: THE LASH LIFTER

They’re able to remove false eyelashes so quickly that they can be in and out between blinks. You don’t even notice your lashes are gone until they’ve already left the area, and if they can’t remove a lash because of its adhesive, they’ll just bite it off with their scary sharp teeth!

January 21st, 2012 by Karen 617 Comments

  • WINNER: The giveaway is closed now, and the winner is Bridget! Congratulations, Bridget! If you entered but didn’t win this time around, keep trying, and click here to enter any ongoing giveaways before you jet. 🙂

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

Well, it looks like we’ve gotten a brief respite from the rain this morning, yay! Shoot, I think I even see patches of blue in the sky. Of course, my office still feels like a dark, cold cave, but at least the freezing rains have stopped.

What’s the weather like over there? I hope not too rough. Are you hunkered down at home or out and about?

That reminds me, why do morning TV news shows always send reporters out into storms just to report back that there is, in fact, a storm? “Jane! Quick, get over to the Target parking lot, and get me some footage of the [INSERT INCLEMENT WEATHER HERE]!” And it’s usually a woman, and she’s usually in heels.

Maybe I should try that with blogging… “HI, EVERYONE! IT’S ME KAREN! I’M BLOGGING HERE FROM MY IPHONE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STORM!!! AS YOU CAN TELL FROM THE DEBRIS FLYING AROUND ME, WE’RE STILL GETTING SOME VERY HIGH WINDS. THE RAIN IS COMING IN SIDEWAYS, MY MAKEUP IS A MESS, AND THERE’S A DOWNED POWER LINE OVER THERE!!! BACK TO YOU, TABS, IN THE STUDIO!”

Haha! No, I don’t think I’ll be giving that a try…

And you shouldn’t either. Better to stay indoors where it’s safe and warm, and where you can enter giveaways like this one here for a gift card from Sephora. 🙂

Win a $50 gift card from Sephora

  • One (1) Sephora eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

  • There are two ways to enter, and you can do both of them for two chances to win. First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, a comment about anything at all, like, what’s your favorite kind of weather (tropical like Hawaii, dry and hot like Sacramento, foggy like Eureka, temperate like San Francisco)? Can you recommend a good face mask? What are your favorite TV shows? How many skincare products do you use in a typical day? What do you want to be when you grow up? What’s your current lipgloss crush? — you get the idea.
  • Second, you can enter by following me on twitter Twitter @karenmbb and retweeting (RT) the following message:
    • Follow @karenmbb and RT to Win a $50 eGift Card from Sephora! http://bit.ly/z76oEq

  • The deadline to enter is Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 11:59PM (PT).
  • Entrants must enter using a valid email address and/or Twitter account to win.
  • A maximum of two (2) entries per person — one within the comments at the bottom of this post, and a second entry via Twitter addressed to me @karenmbb.
  • Contest is open to individuals of any country who have reached the age of majority according to their local laws (18 in the United States with these exceptions: Alabama and Nebraska, 19; Mississippi, 21).
  • Sephora eGift Certificates can only be redeemed online and are not valid in stores or available for purchase or redemption in Canada. International winners may opt to substitute the Sephora eGift card prize for $50 sent directly to their email address by PayPal instead.
  • Tabs and I (heretofore referred to as “T-Money and K-Dawg”) will select one (1) winner at random from the entries either left in the comments at the bottom of this blog post or addressed to @karenmbb on Twitter.
  • The winner will be announced here within 48 hours of the deadline.
  • Void where prohibited by law.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 203

January 16th, 2012 by Karen 52 Comments

Product testing, testing, one, two, three…

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Better now, but last night? Apocalypse dream. Yep, probably because I watched all 12 episodes of Survivors over the span of three days. A few of the characters were even in the dream, which was very unsettling. In it, everyone knew exactly when the world would end, but no one could do anything to stop it. It was inevitable, and people spent their final moments saying goodbyes and “I love you” to each other.

  3. Do you consider yourself an organized person, and if so, does it come naturally to you, or do you have to work at it?
  4. For me and I bet like most people, it depends on my state of mind. When I’m happy and physically comfortable, I think I do alright, but if I’m feeling down or overstressed, I start ignoring my to-do lists and let the clutter spiral out of control.

  5. Your favorite hand cream?
  6. I’ve been totally into Clarins Hand and Nail Cream ever since I got a sample size as a GWP from Nordstrom a couple months back. I love the light, fresh scent, and it absorbs into my skin quickly without leaving a greasy film behind.

  7. What do you usually order when you go out for breakfast or brunch?
  8. If they’re on the menu, banana pancakes! Om nom nom…

  9. Have you ever been in a band?
  10. Have I ever! 🙂 If school marching band counts. Oh, and once I sang with a friend’s dad’s cover band at a random wedding reception.

  11. Ferris wheels: fun or frightening?
  12. Fun! Especially on a clear, starry night.

  13. What’s one of the most important traits to have in a partner?
  14. I was about to say, “The ability to make a mean scrambled egg,” but seriously, I think kindness, above everything else. I was lucky to marry the kindest man I’ve ever met.

  15. How often do you heat style your hair?
  16. Every time I wash it, which is about three times a week ever since I cut it shorter into a Cleopatra-style bob with bangs. I use a hairdryer or flat iron to smooth out my natural waves.

It’s a phase… Before long I’m sure I’ll be all about my waves again.

  17. Can you eat with chopsticks?
  18. I can to pick up stuff that’s pretty big and relatively easy, like sushi, but tiny things like peas? Forget it.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. I made it to two yoga classes last week, so I’d like to do that again. I also want to make sure I get to bed by 10 every night and read at least 30 minutes a day.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Hello and happy holiday, friend. How’s it going?

Tabs is in the office this morning totally micro-managing my work… Scratch here, pet there, and at one point he plopped on top of the keyboard and refused to budge until I massaged his tum. It’s a miracle I was able to finish this post!

Assuming that you don’t have a cat/dog blocking your screen or keyboard right now, do you have time to touch base with the Monday Poll? I always love to hear from you, but especially on Mondays.

1. Mood:
2. Do you consider yourself an organized person?
3. Your favorite hand cream?
4. What do you usually order when you go out for breakfast or brunch?
5. Have you ever been in a band?
6. Ferris wheels: fun or scary?
7. What’s one of the most important traits to have in a partner?
8. How often do you heat style your hair?
9. Can you eat with chopsticks?
10. Weekly goals:

Hmm… having a little trouble staying focussed this morning. Let’s hope that wears off soon.

Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 174

January 15th, 2012 by Karen 22 Comments

As you know, Tabs leads a jet-setting kitty lifestyle packed with party invites and dates with A-list celebs, but no matter how many professional accolades he receives (he’s up for a Golden Globe tonight in the Huskiest Kitty Model category), Tabs never forgets his humble beginnings. He keeps his paws on the pulse of the local street scene, and to most of the neighborhood cats, he’s just Tabby from the block.

Lately, he’s been wanting to give back to the community, and so he’s decided to take a kitty model intern under his wing. One of the candidates is a blue-eyed feline I call “The Cross-Eyed Kitty,” who lives a few doors down. Since Tabs was out of town this weekend (he was up at Jay-Z and B’s place and says the new baby is adorable), he asked me to conduct the interview.

We met on the grassy knoll at the edge of the parking lot, and the first thing I noticed about her is her size. She’s tiny compared to Tabs, about half his size, and has the most beautiful cream, black and brown markings I’ve seen in a while. When I asked her why she wanted to be a kitty model, she replied with a soft, raspy “ack-ack-ack” meow.

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

Heavens to Murgatroyd! Is it Sunday already? Well, I hope you’re having a good one so far. No complaints over here. I stayed up late last night watching that show I mentioned the other day, Survivors. Only two more episodes left before the series finale, gah! I just can’t believe the show got cancelled. It’s probably the best post-apocalyptic programming I’ve ever seen, even better than the Walking Dead (if you’re into that kind of thing, it’s available to stream on Netflix).

And no, I’m not just saying that because Max Beesley could be El Hub’s doppelgänger. 🙂 But I have to warn you — if you watch it, you’ll scream, “What the hell!?” at least three times every episode.

Survivors isn’t the only British export I’ve been hooked on lately. Do you ever listen to an album for a while, then kindasorta forget about it, and then rediscover it in a few years? That’s what happened with me and Bloc Party.

I loved their 2005 album, Silent Alarm, when it came out, but then it drifted off my radar screen until I queued it up again the other day before a run.

Wow! I totally remember why I loved it so much. Block Party reminds me of a slightly harder version of Phoenix with a dash of punk rock and ’80s new wave. Lots of strong driving beats and catchy hooks to help you power through a workout.

One of my fave songs, evah!

No big plans for me today. I do have to swing by Target at some point to get a stepladder and some hangers. Maybe Container Store, too, if I have any time left in the afternoon. My cup runneth over with excitement, I know.

What’s on your agenda for today? If you missed anything we talked about this week, here’s one final look. I think for me, NARS was the star.

Oh, and just a heads up, but if you’re wearing any concealer, better watch out for these guys…

MAKEUP MONSTERS: THE CONCEALER CREASER

An MBB Makeup Monster: The Concealer CreaserFREQUENCY: Rare
SPEED: Fast
ARMOR CLASS: 6
SPECIAL ATTACKS: Quick claw sneak attack! Concealer Creasers will hide in chimneys, garages and the back seats of cars, waiting for unsuspecting concealer wearers to approach. Then, in a blur of frantic scratching, clawing, and raking, they’ll strike, causing creases and fading in all types of concealers. Nothing, not even Time Balm or Stila Perfecting Concealer, stands a chance.

NARS Mexican Rose Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil The NARS Mexican Rose
Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil Diaries (Uncensored)

Dear Diary,

Didn’t do much yesterday other than radiate awesomeness. Yeah, that’s right. I make it rain! And if that makes me sound conceited, so be it.

My pink-haired roommate (we totally match!) tells me all the time, “you’re basically the sh*t.” She clearly sees that I’m the chupacabra of perfect pink lips.

I think she might be my new BFF, which is funny… Girls usually get so jealous of my dense pink pigment, high shine and easy-to-apply pencil tip.

But it’s not my fault that I’m so awesome and unique. I can’t help that I start off all super shiny like a gloss or that I morph into a hot pink lip stain with a subtle sheen. Read more…

Dolce & Gabbana Charm Pencil Collection Charmed, I’m Sure, by the Dolce & Gabbana
Charm Pencil Collection

One of the reasons why Dolce & Gabbana rules: they dangle tiny charms from their makeup JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN.

Never you mind that the charms enchanting the eight-piece limited edition Charm Pencil collection don’t really serve a purpose beyond looking cute as they swing from their respective lip and eye liners. If we have the right to accessorize, so should our makeup! Viva la cuteness for us all!

Every time I catch a glimpse of the dainty golden envelopes, high heels, hearts and horns hanging from these pencils, which arrive next month (just in time for Valentine’s Day!), while I attend to my lips or eyes, I’m transported back to the kinder, gentler days of my youth, when a trip to the Hello Kitty store to buy a $4 mechanical pencil with a charm swinging on the end was one of the highlights of my week. NARS Gaiety Blush With NARS Gaiety Blush on My Cheeks,
Merriment Ensues

Well, I’ll be darned… There’s shine in that thar blush!

After seeing the new NARS Gaiety Blush ($28) in its pan, and even after the first quick swatch on the back of my hand, I was sure this candy pink would apply as a straight up matte, but it turns out that this member of the new NARS Spring 2012 collection has a secret up its sleeve — it likes to shine. Coupled with its medium pigmentation, this sweet sheen transforms Gaiety from a pretty pink blush into a thing of beauty.

Imagine the light flush you get when your crush notices that you’re wearing your hair differently. For me, that’s Gaiety. Read more…

NARS Paramaribo Eyeshadow Duo The $34 Limited Edition NARS Paramaribo Eyeshadow Duo,
and the Time I Was on Jeopardy

Karen: “Hmm… Since I’m on a roll, I’ll take Famous Crazy Cat Ladies for a thousand, Alex.”

Alex Trebek: “This pop star, crazy cat lady and ex-wife of Russell Brand has a perfume line with bottles shaped like cats… Karen?”

Karen: “Who is Katy Perry?”

Alex Trebek: “Correct! Well, you certainly know your cat ladies, Karen, and your Madonna lyrics and Ryan Gosling trivia. Two categories left — Projectile Sports, and the NARS Paramaribo Eyeshadow Duo.”

Karen: “I’ll take NARS Paramaribo for $200, Alex.”

Alex Trebek: “Paramaribo is named after the capital city in this tropical South American country… Oh, and there she goes.”

Karen: “What is Suriname, Alex? NARS Paramaribo for $400.” Read more…

MAC Uniform Technakohl Pencil Liner MAC UNSUNG HEROES
TECHNAKOHL PENCIL LINER

Yup, one of those days…

I feel like just hitting my head against my desk, but I wonder, “What would Tim Gunn do?”

Ah, of course. That’s right. Tim would “make it work,” so I’ll try to do the same, and I have, hence the five cups of tea.

To make it official, though, I think I should put it in print, so here goes: “By the time I reach the bottom of this mug, I will be filled with lurve.”

LURVE!

On the plus side, at least I’m not possessed by a demon (yay!), I have all of my toes, and I don’t have serial killer eyes. Three very good things, and today I owe that last one to MAC Uniform Technakohl ($15).

A khaki eyeliner with golden shimmer, it fits my mood a lot of the time when other shades don’t. Understated. Not as flashy as black nor as blah as brown, it makes me feel classier when I swipe it along my lash and water lines. Read more…

NARS Valparaiso Matte Lipstick Thanks to NARS Valparaíso Pure Matte Lipstick,
Berries Are in Season This Spring

Today I live in the burbs about 30 miles north of San Francisco, but back when I did live in the city, it was smack dab in the middle of the dot-com boom, and the place was hoppin’.

Rental rates were out of control! Dot-coms were shooting up everywhere you looked, and housing of any kind was hard to come by. I struggled to find a place to live and eventually ended up renting a room in a sketchy house out in SF’s Sunset District, living with a cavalcade of characters, like the DJ/herbal enthusiast (let’s just say she wasn’t growing rosemary, if you know what I mean), and the kleptomaniac.

Honestly, I have no idea what I was thinking when I signed that lease. It wasn’t one of my better life decisions, but the rent was cheap, and I was hell bent on moving out of my parents’ house.

Which brings me to the new NARS Valparaíso Pure Matte Lipstick for Spring 2012. Read more…

NARS Lhasa Eyeshadow NARS Notable Neutrals Club Meeting Minutes, Jan. 12, 2012
Should Lhasa Eyeshadow Be Granted Membership in the Club?

Order, people! Order! Is this thing on…?

Good evening, everyone. Tonight’s meeting of the NARS Notable Neutrals Club is called in session. I know everybody’s excited about the spring collection, but let’s settle down. If we don’t start the meeting soon, you won’t get home in time to watch the Jersey Shore — no judgement! Seriously though, quiet down.

Okay, our first order of business. I’d like to nominate a new member to the club, NARS Lhasa Eyeshadow. She’s a single, $24, and I propose that we waive public comments and vote to make her membership official effective tomorrow, January 13, when she debuts along with the rest of the spring collection.

Now, I can hear some of you grumbling back there… I’ve heard the charges that the club has become too exclusive to newcomers — Cyprus, I’m talking to you — but may I remind you that we are not mean girls. All of us were at one time new neutrals ourselves, waiting to be discovered and loved. Lhasa deserves a chance. Read more…

Two Ways to Win a $50 eGift Card from Sephora!

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

It’s mani/pedi day. 🙂

Would you believe I haven’t painted my fingers or toes since Christmas?

I know! It might even be a record for me. Not that I haven’t wanted to make some lacquer love, because I have. I’ve been thinking about it for weeks, but you know how it is. Sometimes you just get caught up doing other things.

Well enough of that. Come hell or high water, I’m painting my paws today, and I’m thinking maybe a purple on my fingers and something green on my toes.

We shall see!

I hope you have something fun lined up for today. Other than painting my nails, I should do at least a little housecleaning (it never ends!), but I figure that if I can accomplish something productive early, I’ll feel better about chilling out later today.

Oh, I almost forgot — I should also swing by Petco to look at cat towers this afternoon because his royal majesty has pretty much trashed his current kitty condo. He’s completely shredded the carpeting, and now the only thing holding it together is duct tape!

Classy…

LOL! Before you jet, take a moment to enter today’s giveaway. And whatever you’re up to this weekend, I hope there’s room for fun (if you haven’t seen War Horse yet, go see it!).

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 202

January 9th, 2012 by Karen 39 Comments

I’m finally taller than something!

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. A little emotional and tender today. I think part of it’s residual melancholy from watching War Horse last night, and the other part is because I realized this morning that I will be 37 exactly 6 months from today.

I hear a clock ticking, and I’m not sure what to do…

  3. Something you’ve always wanted to do?
  4. It’s silly, but I’ve always wanted to play in the water with all the kids and adults when someone opens a fire hydrant on a hot summer day in a busy neighborhood. I’ve seen that scene in so many movies, and it always looks like so much fun.

  5. Three things that make you go “Mmm…”
  6. The thought of getting 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep, See’s Candies milk chocolate butterscotch squares and shirtless pictures of Ryan Gosling. 🙂

  7. One of your fast food guilty pleasures?
  8. The side orders at KFC — mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits and corn (each of which could also have been answers to the previous question).

  9. Would you rather face a vampire, a werewolf or a ghost?
  10. A ghost, because I’m assuming it wouldn’t want to eat me or turn me into something.

  11. Brown, black or blue mascara?
  12. Black, with a little blue at the tips of my lashes.

  13. Fruit or veggies?
  14. Fruit. Which reminds me, there’s a chilled honeycrisp apple waiting for me in the ‘fridge. YUM!

  15. A movie or tv show you absolutely refuse to watch?

Tabs for Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick

Tabs locked himself in my office a few hours ago and hasn’t been out since. It must be something serious because he didn’t even come out when I opened him a can of gravy for dinner.

I know it has something to do with the movie he went to this afternoon, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. When Tabs got home he looked like he’d been crying, so I asked him what happened, but he just brushed past me, ran upstairs and slammed the office door. A few minutes later I got a text on my phone that said, “Hold all my calls. I’m writing a fan letter to Joey the horse.”

The movie is a real tearjerker (I cried my eyes out, too), and Tabs has always worked well with horses, so I can’t say I’m surprised. One of his best friends is a bay named Star that he worked with on the Urban Decay Cowboy Junkie campaign.

I’m sure Tabs will come downstairs soon… I can’t imagine him going to bed without at least a little gravy in his tum.

Work-wise, Tabs was pretty busy again this week. He did a lot of flying, too, first to Greece for a Smashbox campaign and then to New Zealand for a quick Gucci shoot.

Yup, that’s how it is for kitty supermodels. Always on the go. 🙂
