The Bowlcut Is Baaaack!

March 15th, 2010 by Karen 21 Comments

The year was 1980; the place, Union City, California. American figure skater Dorothy Hamill was a superstar, as was the bowlcut she wore. I remember because I rocked it, hard. 🙂 Well … as hard as a kindergartner could, ha ha!

What once was old is new again. Ladies, the bowlcut is baaaack.

I think I’ll pass this time, though. I thought it was quite fetching when I was five, but now? Been there, done that.

Return of the Bowl Haircut

by Megan McIntyre, Daily Makeover

The bowl cut, which has been a popular hairstyle in decades past, seems to be enjoying a comeback of sorts as a bevy of hip, young celebs have been seen sporting the look around town.

One glance at this retro round bob probably has you wondering what could possibly prompt chic young ladies like Agyness Deyn, Estelle, Parker Posey and Christina Ricci to don a short hairstyle that gives off such a distinct whiff of 70’s cheese.

We definitely never thought we’d be seeing a good chunk of Hollywood embrace the rounded bangs, but we’re even more shocked to say that we kind of like the look.

It’s got a slightly sexy, a little bit brooding, definitely retro vibe that keeps our eyes entranced.

Part of this reason, at least according to celebrity hairstylist Sam Brocato, is that the cut practically begs you to stare at its wearer’s face.

Saturday Surfing

March 13th, 2010 by Karen 13 Comments

It’s Saturday, girls, which means (HOLLA!) we survived the week!

This morning I woke up still feeling sleepy, so I’ve been fueling up on green tea, you see, to make it through all of the fooling around I have planned for today. 🙂

But first I have to do some boring house cleaning stuff (boo!)… Once I take care of that, though, I’m gonna try to pop by Marshall’s to look for a pair of cage shoes that don’t make my toes look like monkey feet. Good luck to me, ha!

Before you go about your Saturday bidness, can you catch a few waves?

Makeup and Beauty Tips from Olympic Speed Skater Allison Baver

March 11th, 2010 by Karen 10 Comments

I’m still kinda fired up after the excitement of last month’s Olympic Games… There was something epic about it all, ya know? — about seeing top athletes chase big dreams. It was like watching the journeys of the heroes in Greek myths!

Olympic athletes train hard to reach the games, and for some, like US speed skater Allison Baver, there are times when the goal seems out of reach. After shattering her leg in a race last year (she collided with teammate Katherine Reutter), Allison underwent intensive rehab to make it to Vancouver, where she and her speed skating teammates earned a Bronze Medal in the 3000m relay.

I chatted with her this morning and learned that she’s not just a bad-ass on the ice. Allison also loves makeup! And she’s a total girly girl. 🙂 She credits her positive attitude with helping her stay focused and shared a few of her favorite makeup and beauty tips.

New in Beauty, Mar. 11: Tokidoki Makeup and a Butt Lift in a Box

March 11th, 2010 by Karen 38 Comments

New in Beauty

  • OMG, I DIE! The new Tokidoki makeup line ($5-42) is now on sale at Sephora, and it’s really frickin’ cute!
  • The end times are nigh! Now there’s a Butt Lift in a Box ($99)
  • I’m not sure how I feel about the cork packaging, but I do like the colors in Sonia Kashuk’s Spring Awakenings Eye/Lip Palette ($17)…
  • Get Clean with this portable, three-piece Pencil Perfume Set ($30)
  • Sephora says their Tricks of the Trade Perfecting Lash Primer ($14) increases the volume and length of lashes while conditioning witih a pro-vitamin B5-enriched formula
  • I might tree-eet myself to Korres’ Quercetin & Oak Treatment ($50). They say it fights wrinkles and controls oil
  • Could the name for Rexaline’s Hydra-Dose Hyper-Hydrating Skin Densifying Anti-Wrinkle Cream ($59) be any longer?
  • Lighter, summery versions of fragrance faves are starting to pop up! I wanna sniff Ralph Lauren Summer Romance ($78), CK One Summer ($44) and Eternity Summer ($54)
  • The products in the Ouidad Krly Kids line ($12-15) are — surprise! — made for kids with curly hair
  • Sonia Kashuk’s Retractable Silver Face Brush ($15) comes with foundation and powder brush heads for gals on the go
  • Ulta’s carrying a new makeup line called LA Splash
  • L’Oreal says their Studio Secrets Professional Secret No. 1 Magic Perfecting Base ($13) minimizes the look of fine lines AND the appearance of pores

Good morning, ladies, and how are you doing today? I’m still waking up out here… feeling my way around the kitchen for a beverage with caffeine. I’ll reconnect as soon as I’m properly caffeinated. 🙂

  • Smashbox’s Brow Tech Trio ($24) comes with two shades of brow powder and the wax to set it
  • Also from Smashbox: Precision Concealer Brush #5 ($20), Tapered Shadow Brush #7 ($24) and Face & Cheek Brush #2 ($48)
  • Xen-Tan Absolute Luxe ($56) says their time-release formula will give you the darkest tan you’ve ever had, and it’ll do it in one quick application
  • Trish McEvoy maxed out the makeup in her Irresistible Collection Python Petite Makeup Planner ($95)
  • MAC Liberty of London’s up for grabs online at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s
  • WANTS IT! Sonia Kashuk’s Black Tools Large Kabuki Brush ($20)
  • Has anyone tried Boots Botanics Lip Gloss ($8) yet?
  • Perricone MD claims their No Foundation Foundation ($50) is the world’s first anti-aging translucent foundation
  • Origins says their Youthtopia SPF 15 Foundation ($26.50) lifts and tightens. Great, because I need both, LOL! 🙂

Rise and shine, morning glories! It’s downright freezing here today, brrr… A layer of shimmery ice is covering everything outside, which means Tabs may have to wait a while to get his walk on.

Hope you have an awesome day today. Let me know what you’re up to.

One down, four to go! 🙂

It’s Natural: Organic Beauty Still Going Strong

March 6th, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

Despite 2009’s global economic slowdown, sales of natural cosmetics kept chugging along at a spirited pace, clocking in 14% growth worldwide, most of it in Europe and North America.

Earlier this year, almost a quarter of us thought (23%) natural/organic beauty would be 2010’s biggest beauty trend, and the move toward more organic beauty shows no signs of stopping.

My biggest pet peeves with the whole natural/organic beauty market have to do with standardization and certification. I mean, what does it really mean to say that a product’s natural or organic? Sometimes it’s hard to tell, right? And new certifications pop up all the time, like BDIH and Ecocert in Europe, and the USDA (for personal care items based on agricultural products) or brand new NSF/ANSI 305 “Made with Organic” logo here in the States.

I would LOVE to see just a single label or logo used to certify all organic beauty bona-fides. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Are you buying organic beauty products on a regular basis?

A MAC Cat-Themed Collection for Fall? Crazy Cat Ladies Purr with Anticipation!

March 4th, 2010 by Karen 33 Comments

Well color me crazy cat lady! MBB reader Erin clued me in on kitty whispers about an upcoming cat-themed MAC collection for fall 2010.

According to the MAC Early Buzz forum on Specktra.net, it’ll feature two new eyeshadow quads — Russian Blue and Tabby Grey; there’s also rumblings about a lipgloss called Meow. 🙂

In light of last month’s MAC Makeup Collection or Breed of Cat? poll, I find this simultaneously thrilling and kinda funny. Are the MAC makeup gods reading my mind?

Oh, and, yes, Tabs is FREAKING OUT! If the rumors are true, he hopes expects to hear from MAC regarding a modeling job. 🙂

Are you excited about a possible cat-themed MAC collection?
