Attack of the Cosmetic Hybrids!

November 15th, 2008 by Karen 5 Comments

Doesn’t it seem like there’s a new markety makeup catchphrase every week? — a new cosmetic hybrid we’re told will give us the best of two or more different worlds?

And you thought werewolves were bad…

The three classes of cosmetic hybrids most often seen in the wild may have silly names, but each of these is being aggressively promoted by the big cosmetics brands. Here’s a quick primer to help you keep your hybrids straight.

Cosmeceuticals

Merriam-Webster defines a cosmeceutical as “A preparation having both cosmetic and pharmaceutical properties.” Sounds like the backstory for a new superhero, LOL! But we should be so lucky.

According to the guy (big surprise) responsible for coining the term, Dr. Albert Kligman, professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the term applies to any topical preparation sold as a cosmetic but able to benefit the skin like a pharmaceutical. They’re cosmetic products with drug-like benefits, like anti-aging creams and moisturizers, and the “cosmeceutical” label applies only to products applied topically — aka creams, lotions and ointments.

Nutraceuticals

Nutraceuticals weren’t initially conceived of as cosmetic hybrids, but they’ve become increasingly tied to the cosmetic industry since Dr. Stephen DeFelice (another dude… I’m just sayin’) coined the phrase in 1989. “A nutraceutical is any substance that is a food or a part of a food and provides medical or health benefits,” he described, “including the prevention and treatment of disease.” These are often extracts of foods claimed to have medicinal effects on human health, and they’re often packaged in capsule, tablet or powder form and marketed as if they’re drugs with a prescribed dose (in milligrams). The definition also covers bio-engineered vegetables and so-called SUPER FOODS!

Nutricosmetics

Nutricosmetics, also known as skingestibles, have been showing up everywhere lately as products marketed to aid weight loss, to combat sun exposure or to reverse the effects of aging. They’re taken orally as pills or beverages, unlike cosmeceuticals (which are used topically), and are usually jam packed with antioxidants.

Can we expect to see even sillier names for cosmetic hybrid products in the future? I think so, especially as the economy prompts companies to think outside the box.

Hmm… What do you think of veggie-ceuticals? Or cosmetifoodicals?

A Sneak Peek at the New Barbie All Doll’d Up Makeup Line

November 14th, 2008 by Karen 22 Comments

Barbie’s turning 50 this year! To celebrate her big 5-0, Mattel is rolling out a new line of cosmetics and skin care products in 2009, says WWD.

The beauty line is just one part of a huge marketing push by Mattel Inc. to market Barbie as a fashion brand and includes new partnerships with Bloomingdale’s, Vera Wang, Jeremy Scott, IMG and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

From the looks of these product pics the makeup appears targeted for grown ups, rather than kids or tweens. Somebody in marketing obvs has a sense of humor — the makeup line is called “All Doll’d Up,” and the skin care line is named “Plastic Smooth,” LOLZ. Both the cheeky product names and packaging remind me a little bit of Benefit Cosmetics.

I loves me some Barbie so I’m pretty stoked about this! I really hope the products perform well (and that Skipper gets at least a lipgloss shout out). I wonder if they plan to roll out a Ken line for men. 🙂

What do you think about the upcoming Barbie makeup and skin care collections?

Beauty Snacks: Sites of the Day, November 14

I Want All The Bags From the Hayden-Harnett Target Line

  • SO CUTE! I’m a total handbag ho, so I can’t wait for Hayden-Harnett’s Target Line (a collection of tote bags, clutches and a single, random umbrella) to debut on December 28th.

James the Vampire = Kinda Hawt

  • Hey, Twilighters! Behold the new Men’s Health magazine cover featuring bad boy vampire James (aka cutie pie actor Cam Gigandet)!

Say It Ain’t So

  • Are you ready for the return of the bowl bang? I used to have a Dorthy Hamill bowl cut with bangs just like these circa 1981, LOL. 🙂

Coming Soon

  • When you hit those day-after-Christmas sales on December 26, head over to MAC to peep the new Dame Edna collection. Also keep your eyes peeled for Clinique Instant Relief Mineral Powder ($32.50), a yellow, loose powder designed to cancel out red tones, which debuts in January.

The Return of the Pant Suit

  • You may soon be kissing your GAP khaki pants goodbye. With the unemployment rate in America at a 14-year high and more than half a million jobs lost in the last three months, people are changing the way they dress for work.

The Case of the Disappearing Collar

OMG, scandal. I hadn’t seen Tabs all day yesterday, and when he arrived home last night his collar was totally MIA. This cat better not be cheating on me with another human. 🙁 It’s one of those safety collars that’s designed to break away if a kitty gets stuck, so I am really hoping that unsavory human hands did not remove the stylish blue collar from my rotund, striped friend.

Still, I’m happy it’s Friday. It’s been a long week. Today I’ve got grand plans to buy Tabs a new collar (pink with rhinestones?), test my tube o’ MAC Dazzle Lash mascara and experiment with the Nars Jolie Poupee eye duo (from the Nars holiday 2008 collection). So excited!

Are you having a good day so far?

Eco Lips Launches Edible Lip Line

November 13th, 2008 by Karen 12 Comments

I’m starving! Where the heck did I put my lip balm?!?

Organic lip balm maker Eco Lips has created a 99 percent organic and 100 percent edible lip line. Pure & Simple joins the company’s growing batch of organic lip products. The “recipe” includes organic sunflower seed oil, organic beeswax, organic flavors and vitamin E and will come in three flavors — kiwi-strawberry, coconut and grape ($1.99 each).

I don’t mind the idea behind tasty lip products, and bravo that these are also mostly organic, but when I wear flavored stuff on my lips I tend to lick it off, immediately. I can’t refrain. If it’s yummy and it’s right there, I lick and smack and … DANGIT!

How do you feel about edible lip products?

P.S. Eco Lips even makes a Red Bull-ish energizing lip balm infused with caffeine, green tea and vitamin B12. WEIRD!

Oprah and Dr. Oz on the Science of Beauty

November 12th, 2008 by Karen 9 Comments

Did you catch yesterday’s Oprah? She and Dr. Oz, her BFF medical buddy, went over some of the most common beauty concerns (like adult acne) and most popular beauty trends and fads out there and then gave beauty checkups to a select group of women from the audience.

Oz looked at their overall health, both medical and emotional, and, after running the women through a barrage of blood tests, sat down with them to discuss eating and exercise habits and the other aspects of their lives.

Oprah.com has a section dedicated to the Science of Beauty. It’s a great resource.

5 More Makeup and Beauty Tips from Paris Hilton

November 10th, 2008 by Karen 44 Comments

Every successful celebutante has a few secret beauty tips up her sleeve, and Paris Hilton’s no exception. She was in SF today at the Macy’s in Union Square to promote Fairy Dust, her latest fragrance, and dished about her new perfume, her TV show and, of course, makeup.

New Lipgloss Love: Laura Mercier Liquid Crystal Lipgloss in Citrine

When it comes to makeup, Paris loves lipgloss. This time last year she was all about Chanel Glossimer in Astral. Before that, it was MAC Lipglass in Prrr, but lately she’s been lovin’ on Laura Mercier Liquid Crystal Lipgloss in Citrine, a bright golden coral.

Homegirl actually busted out a tube from her silver Fendi purse while we talked.

“It’s funky,” she said, turning the tube in the light to show me how the colors changed, and then applied a layer with the doe foot applicator. “It’s like all different colors … green and gold and orange.”

Sounds pretty, right? So I went straight to the Laura Mercier counter after the interview only to find out that the Liquid Crystal glosses had been retired six months ago. SHOOT!

But I did some digging and found a slightly softer alternative to Citrine, Bellini Lip Glace ($22), a shimmery coral-gold.

5 of Paris Hilton’s Favorite Makeup and Beauty Products

1. MAC Studio Fix
She can’t live without it!

2. Cle de Peau Concealer

3. CoverGirl LashBlast
Okay, that settles it. Paris and I don’t have the same taste in mascara. Last year she mentioned Maybelline Great Lash (I never understood the hype), and this year it’s CoverGirl’s LashBlast. Seriously?

I almost gave her my tube of Chanel Exceptionnel mascara … but who gives away Chanel??

4. Wet ‘n’ Wild Nail Polish
LOL, I wonder if she tries on polish while she’s standing in front of the display in the store. I know you do this too, ladies. Don’t lie!

5. Kate Somerville products
Paris highly recommends Kate’s cleanser, eye cream and toner.

Some of Her Favorite Makeup Looks

She’s photographed wearing a lot of smokey eyes and nude lips, but today she wore a shimmery silver and green-gray eye, pink cheeks and coral lips, which nicely complimented her seafoam green and silver Alexander Wang dress, L.A.M.B cardigan and white Dior sunglasses.

Sex and the City 2.0: Should There Be a Sequel?

November 8th, 2008 by Karen 26 Comments

How’s it going, girls? Look what I found in the news this morning. Actress Kim Cattrall, 52, pretty emphatically says there’s going to be a Sex and the City: The Movie sequel, yea!

She spilled the beans on Britain’s The Paul O’Grady Show. Her exact words when asked “Will there be a sequel?” — “Yes there will!”

Kim had recently told reporters, “The movie was so much fun to do and be part of again. I hope we’re going to do it again.”

I Netflixed the movie DVD this week and watched it twice in one day. Can’t wait for the next one! I think it’s true that you can be in your 40s and 50s and still be fashionable and interesting. There’s more to life than mom jeans!

Would you like to see another Sex and the City movie?

Yves Saint Laurent: A Career Retrospective

November 6th, 2008 by Karen 39 Comments

I played hooky earlier this week and drove into San Francisco to visit the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park. The museum has on display a new exhibit featuring a career retrospective of clothing designer Yves Saint Laurent, who passed away on June 1 of this year.

Yves Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born on August 1, 1936 in Oran, Algeria, at the time a French colony.

Yves Saint Laurent

I don’t really know much about Yves Saint Laurent clothes (they’re out of my Old Navy budget), but I’ve seen and played with the YSL luxe makeup line at Nordies and Sephora and have always been curious about the man, so I thought the exhibit might be cool.

A cocktail dress and hat, circa 1960. I’d so rock this in a heartbeat!

The exhibit features over 130 original Yves Saint Laurent designs from the ’60s to the present day, outfits ranging from sleek, sophisticated cocktail dresses to intricate haute couture gowns.

Beyond presenting his clothes, the exhibit explores the man and what had been some of his sources of inspiration during his life — art, theatre, history, literature and nature.

There aren’t any compacts or lipsticks in the hizz, but I think his influence on the entire world of beauty, from fashion to cosmetics, comes through in the patterns and colors of his clothes.

He Changed How We Dress

Ah, the pantsuit. There are several pant suits and tuxedos up in the mix, items that were signature to YSL style. In the 1960s, YSL designed and dressed women in clothes that had historically symbolized male power. The shift signaled a revolution in the history of women’s clothing. Now we wear pants day and night!

A Shakespeare-inspired haute couture gown

Couture Gowns

Who doesn’t like pants, right? Heck, I wear pants like *every* day!, but YSL was also a master of the haute couture gown.

Before my trip to the museum this week, I’d never seen a haute couture gown in person. Fo sho, they’re extremely detailed — the pleating, bead work and embroidery — but in general they’re not something you’d wear to the library on a Tuesday. It took every ounce of willpower to refrain from touching.
