I’m Road-Trippin’ Over the Chanel Road Movie Les 4 Ombres Eyeshadow Palette

December 1st, 2021 by Karen 3 Comments

chanel road movie
The $62 Chanel Road Movie palette

This Chanel quad was first released in 2017 and has since been added to the permanent collection. It’s one of my favorites to this day!

Holy highway, Thelma & Louise! I just realized that I don’t have a favorite road movie!

How’s that even possible? I’m such a movie fiend.

Oh, well. Thank you, Chanel Road Movie eyeshadow palette, for that realization.

Hmm… What about Speed starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves? It’s not really a road movie, but I love that cheesy classic (Thelma & Louise is another great one, of course).

Colors of the California coast

Road Movie ($62) is one of two limited edition quads in the Chanel Travel Diary Fall Collection that were inspired by colors of the California coast, and I can definitely see the colors of the state along the coast between LA and Big Sur.

There are deep, oceanic navy blues and teals in this eye quad, but let’s get real — the water is usually darker, murkier and scarier than we ever see it in makeup, LOL!

The quad also has a satiny golden brown, which is a powder shadow version of Memory, the cream shadow in this collection, and a matte tan that looks like golden Cali sand.

That’s Road Movie on my lids and lash lines, Chanel Palette Essentielle in Beige Intense (from the Travel Diary Fall Collection) on my cheeks, and Chanel Rouge Coco in Experimental on my lips (also from Travel Diary).

Packed with pigment

Powerful pigment isn’t the first thing I think when it comes to Chanel quads. The brand usually pulls back on the pigment — but not too much — which makes it easier for mere mortals like me to blend them and sheer out the edges. That’s one of the reasons I love Chanel shadows so much for everyday looks. They’re juuust pigmented enough.

This quad? Road Movie has Make Up For Ever-caliber color. The shadows are intensely pigmented, especially the blue and teal, but they’re still surprisingly easy to work with.

Buttery Brown Matte Eyes and Plum Lips with the Jane Iredale Naturally Matte Eye Shadow Kit and Covet Beyond Matte Lip Stain

November 30th, 2021 by Karen 8 Comments

jane iredale naturally matte eye shadow kit

Why are the first couple days back to work after a long holiday weekend so rough? I swear I feel everything I’m doing is in slow motion!

I had back-to-back meetings all morning, and so I put on some makeup. It’s a lot easier to be perky on camera when you’re wearing buttery brown matte eyes and matte plum lips, and yes, you can quote me on that, LOL!

The eye, cheek and lip products I’m wearing here are all Jane Iredale, a “clean” (air quotes) line you can find at Ulta and Pharmaca.

v

I love how her powder eyeshadows blend so easily. If you’re the type of person who likes to do one or two colors on your lids and then call it a day, I think you’ll love her eye palettes. The one I’m wearing in these pics, Naturally Matte ($59), is a great option for everyday looks. All the colors are neutral and totally wearable.

This was my first time trying a Jane Iredale matte liquid lipstick. The plum shade I’m wearing, Covet ($32), has high pigment and lasts through drinks and snacks.

v

I was kinda surprised by the Peaches & Cream Bronzer ($44), because on me, the shimmery peachy-tan looks more like a highlighter on my tan skin. It reminds me a lot of the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks, but just a touch less frosty.

I’ve got a few deadlines looming so I’m going to get back to doing what I do! I hope your Tuesday has been great.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Totally unrelated, but I forgot to mention that all throughout the Thanksgiving weekend, we were listening to yacht rock at our house, and now these songs have been playing on repeat.

Make a wish, baby!

Meet you all the way

Seriously, somebody stop me

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 705

November 29th, 2021 by Karen 14 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

    1. Have you started decorating for the holidays?

I have some Thanksgiving decorations up that I need to put away. As for Christmas decor, no not yet. Hopefully sometime this week I’ll get some lights and ornaments up outside. We’ll probably do the tree this weekend or the next.

    2. What things help you wake up when you’re feeling groggy?

One thing that always helps is washing my face with cold water. Exercising first thing in the morning also wakes me up, too.

    3. Have you ever had a bunk bed?

No, although when I was a kid, I always thought it would be super cool to have one, and then sleep in the top bunk!

    4. A scent that says, “It’s the holidays,” for you?

Christmas trees and pine needles. I love smelling a fresh tree inside my house.

    5. Cranberry sauce: does it belong in sandwiches?

I don’t mind it in a turkey sandwich.

    6. How did you do your eyeliner today?

I tightlined my upper lash line and roots with a dark brown gel liner (Ilia Dusk), and then I did a swish of brown liquid liner on the top lash line with a tiny little flick (Clinique Pretty Easy Pen in Brown).

    7. Jeans: with or without some stretch?

Just a little bit of stretch but not too much. I don’t like it when jeans get too loose around the booty and knees.

    8. A lipstick shade you wear a lot?

MAC Velvet Teddy never lets me down.

    9. Something you need to replace?

This might be TMI, but whatev! I’m way overdue to replace socks and underwear! Both situations are kinda stressing me out at the moment.

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 687

November 28th, 2021 by Karen 2 Comments

Tabs and Rosie have many things in common, like fabulous fur, overachievement and a desire to give back to the community — Tabs, through his many philanthropic endeavors, and Rosie through her new STEM scholarship for cats.

While Rosie is the true scientist in the Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC family, Tabs was no slouch when it came to science and technology. In fact, he developed his very first iPhone app when he was only five.

But that was merely the prelude to his storied technological career. Shortly after that, he engineered his own robotic assistant.

Then he earned his PhD in gravy research…

Later, he actually designed the original SpaceX Raptor engine for Elon Musk.

Rosie

As for Rosie’s technological accomplishments, she’s just getting started. Like Tabs, she excels in her intellectual pursuits in part because she also takes care of her body. She trains three nights per week at Meow Martial Arts MMA gym.

Her days are split between her work for NASA…

And coding…

And her archeological pursuits…

Yup, I think it’s safe to assume we’ll be seeing many great scientific accomplishments from Rosie. 🙂

Saturday Surfing, Nov. 27, 2021!

saturday mandarin oranges books tea
Just a little meow time!

Welcome to the weekend. Truth be told, the last few days have all felt like a Saturday with the holiday and all. Hard to believe Thanksgiving has come and gone… I don’t know why, but I continue to be shocked by how quickly the days sneak up on me this time of year!

It’s a sunny day here in Novato, and I’ll be taking it easy today. I’ll be doing some intense Netflixing because there’s a new season of “Selling Sunset” out. 😁

I can already feel my brain melting…

Yes, it’s cheesy, and I don’t really have any interest in the Los Angeles real estate market, but I enjoy it because my brain can completely turn off while I watch it.

After lunch I’m taking Connor ice skating! We went ice skating together for the first time when we were in Tahoe last weekend, and she picked up on it pretty quickly. She’s been eager to get back on the ice ever since, and there’s a temporary ice skating rink at the Northgate Mall nearby in San Rafael, so that’s where we’re going.

Also, before we head out, I’m going to try to not eat this entire box of satsuma oranges I got at Trader Joe’s the other day… DANG! Satsumas are where it’s at, girl. They’re so easy to peel and so soft and juicy… If you see them at the store, grab them! SO GOOD.

This week’s reading

  • Say what?! Are thin eyebrows back?
  • Do probiotics have any benefits for skin?
  • Seriously, I can’t wait to see Lady Gaga in the new “House of Gucci” movie. Here’s how her makeup and hair team transformed her look for the film.
  • I’m a huge fan of this eyeshadow placement, and I especially love a diffused spotlight of shimmery peach or pink in the inner corner.
  • 12 scents for people who prefer perfumes that aren’t overly sweet.
  • Oh, my! Cats have driven these species toward extinction.
  • How ballet companies are planning covid-free performances of “Nutcracker.”
  • “Clean” (airquotes) shampoos for curly hair.
  • In case you were looking for a new nail polish remover that doesn’t destroy your nails…

I love learning about color theory.

Cozy

I’m loving all the sequins and the energy.

Bridal makeup is my favorite.

Drop that knowledge on me.

But what if we had one of these for humans…

Street style

I hope the rest of the weekend treats you well! I hope you have some time to relax.

Checking in: Black Friday Beauty Shopping and Epic Stretchy Joggers by Zella

November 26th, 2021 by Karen 3 Comments

biossance jar empty

Hi, friend. Happy Friday to ya!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We spent ours with family friends who invited us over for a full spread with turkey and all the fixings! I can’t even begin to tell you how nice it was to sit at a table and just chat and eat. Seriously, I don’t think I’ll ever take having a meal with people for granted ever again. It really is a gift to share food and time with others.

Before we left for dinner last night, I was getting dressed and had a moment when I actually contemplated non-stretchy pants, aka jeans, LOL! Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking. I ended up going with a pair of joggers and I don’t regret the decision at all. If you’re in the market for super comfy pants with pockets, grab these Zella Soft Pocket Joggers from Nordstrom ASAP. I have them in both black and gray and wear them all the time. You can dress them up with a casual blazer and a white tee, or dress them down with a sweatshirt and a denim jacket. I love, love, love them!

Anywho, I was chatting with a few gals in the comments yesterday about Black Friday beauty shopping, and I had to mention a gift set that I bought from Biossance.

They’re currently having a Black Friday sale with 30% off on everything on the site, so I wanted to pick up a jar of Squalane + Omega Repair Cream. It’s a rich face moisturizer packed with lipids, and I got it originally because the omega fatty acids are supposed to help with hyperpigmentation. I bought one last June for my birthday and have since fallen deeply in love!

biossance jar empty

While I was checking out the gift sets, I noticed one called Unstoppable Glow ($59), which contains a full-size jar of the Omega Cream, and travel-size bottles of their Squalane + Lactic Acid Resurfacing Serum and Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil. With the 30% off sale, it’s $41.

If you just want a jar, a regular full-size 1.6-ounce jar is usually $58, and with the sale it’s $40. There’s also a 3.3-ounce jumbo size ($75), which is marked down to $58, and with 30% off, it’s also $40!

v

One last thing about this sale. If you spend more than $75, you also get a free 11-piece bag of Biossance’s top-rated skin care products.

Other beauty sales I’m excited about are Kate Somerville (25% off site wide), Avene (25% off site wide), Ilia (20% off site wide) and Chantecaille (25% off site wide).

I’m off to go and eat some pancakes now. My brother is visiting and he’s offered to make breakfast. Can’t wait!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!

Happy Thanksgiving

November 25th, 2021 by Karen 26 Comments

happy thanksgiving 2018 final

Happy Thanksgiving, or as I jokingly like to say, “Happy Pie and Stretchy Pants Day.” I’m thankful for pecan pie and the spandex in my black leggings!

All silliness aside, I’m extra grateful for you today. Thank you for your companionship and for always making my day better. It truly is a gift to check in with a friend, even when they’re a long ways away across the keyboard.

Thank you for sharing all your stories about your pets, your kids and grandkids, and your life. Thank you for being the person I can chat with endlessly about face cream, blush (ALL THE BLUSH), lipstick and perfume. Thank you for being you! I think you’re absolutely wonderful.

You’ll always have a friend on this end. Happy Thanksgiving! ❤️

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. How are you spending the holiday? We’ll be heading to our neighbor’s house to celebrate tonight, and then my family will be coming over tomorrow so we can have a belated T-day dinner at our house.

P.P.S. And because I can’t resist talking about beauty… Have you shopped any Black Friday sales yet? I’m about to hit check out on the Biossance 30% off sale because I’m just about done with my jar of Squalane + Omega Repair Cream, and I love it enough to buy another jar.

For the Love of Ginger! MAC Sheertone Blush in Gingerly

November 23rd, 2021 by Karen 7 Comments

mac gingerly blush
MAC Sheertone Blush in Gingerly ($22)

Gingerly is one of my all-time MAC favorite blushes. I just put a refill pan in my cart because MAC currently has an online sale of 30% off everything! The refill pan is $18, but with the 30% discount it’s $12.60.

Ginger!

I am surrounded by ginger…

I’ve been drinking a lot of ginger ale this week because my tummy’s been obnoxiously gurgly, and I’ve also been, at times, simultaneously wearing MAC Gingerly Blush ($25).

Maybe this is more than a coincidence…or maybe it isn’t, and I just have a need to find deep connections between totally unrelated things (story of my life).

My fridge has an entire shelf dedicated to ginger ale. THANKS TUMMY TROUBLES.
