Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 620

March 30th, 2020 by Karen 32 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.

    1. How comfortable are you eating by yourself in a restaurant?

I can’t remember the last time I did it, but I’m totally, TOTALLY comfortable. Sometimes I prefer eating by myself and being able to sit quietly with my thoughts, which I don’t get to do very often. Sometimes I just want to eat a meal in peace. Oh, DARE TO DREAM!

    2. Have you ever ridden in a police car?

Nope, and I have no plans to do so in the future, thank you very much.

    3. How late did you stay up last night?

“Late,” in quotes, because late for me is anything after 9:15, and I was up till 10:30 watching All American and trying to unwind.

    Such is life right now!

    4. What does your makeup bag look like?

Well, I have quite a few makeup bags (big surprise!), but my favorite one right now is a clear bag I got from Wander Beauty. It’s plastic and rectangular and has burgundy trim on the sides, and it opens from the top, so it’s great for travel…but the only place it travels these days is from my desk to a drawer. Should I ever go someplace else in the future, I’ll be taking this bag with me because I can see everything in it, and I like that it opens from the top, so I don’t have to go digging around to find what I need.

    5. How many blankets are on your bed?

Hmm… OK. This is an ambiguous question, I realize. Does one count a sheet as a blanket? Or a comforter? So, I’m just gonna count everything that rests on top of my body as a blanket, which means a sheet, a blanket and a quilt. So three!

Have a good day today, all things considered. Talk to you soon. ?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 600

March 29th, 2020 by Karen 5 Comments

Jeez, it’s almost April already… I can’t believe it. Tabs would have been so sad to miss March Madness this year. ? He was a huge basketball fan and a baller.

In fact, he was Draymond Green’s son’s godcat and a basketball consultant, among other things. Basically, he was one of those multi-hyphenate sports stars. He played football, of course, but he also played basketball in cat college, and he was good, too!

He didn’t make it into the pro league, but fortunately for Tabs, he had a good cattitude about it. He took his knowledge and started a successful basketball consulting agency.

He was the Jerry Maguire of cat agents. ?

His legacy still lives on, and not just through the kitten basketball camps that his foundation funds, but also through Sundays With Tabs (this is the 600th installment!), which continues to inspire kittens and cats around the globe. ?

Karen

Saturdays are for cuddles.

Good morning, my friend. How are you? ❤️ No, really…HOW ARE YOU? I hope you’re feeling well, and not just physically. This is a weird time right now, and you might be struggling to adjust to the new normal (I know I am).

So, this is totally going to sound nerdy, but I actually have a “self-care” section on my weekly to-do list, because if I don’t write things down, even basic life necessity things like remembering to stay hydrated, I’ll forget.

Real Makeup Life: Gnarly Brow Gel

March 27th, 2020 by Karen 11 Comments

mac clear brow set
Believe it or not, these are the same product (Exhibit A).

I present to you Exhibit A.

Above is a picture of a brand-spankin’-new tube of MAC Clear brow gel (my go-to at the moment because it reigns in stray brow hairs without a stiff crunch), and um…another picture of the exact same product, but one that’s been living in my makeup bag for the past few months.

I know. Ewww. I said the same thing when I saw them next to each other.

I’m pretty sure there’s NO WAY I’m the only person on this planet whose brow gel gets gnarly like this. I mean, I’m not super proud of it or anything, and it’s probably something I shouldn’t be sharing on the Internet, but here we are. Gnarly brow gel happens.

I probably also shouldn’t be surprised, because I have a habit of running the gel through my brows *after* I fill them in (makes them look more natural IMO and less obviously filled in), and I use brow gel daily, but still…shocked!

If you use clear brow gel, does this happen to yours, too?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF! Right?

Actually, about that…El Hub and I were just talking about how, with both of us home all day during the week, the days have been blurring together. Is this happening to you? And it’s been hard to plan special things to do, because we aren’t going to restaurants or to stores or the mall, which are things we’d normally do to treat ourselves on the weekend for fun.

We do make meals and rent movies and go for walks and drives, but coming up with new ways to treat ourselves at the end of the week has been tricky.

Does this make any sense? Is this also happening to you?

Shelter in Place / Social Distancing / Homeschooling Activity: Fun With Photography

March 26th, 2020 by Karen 5 Comments

fun with photography

Looking for something fun, educational and interactive to do with your little one? Try showing them how to use the camera on your phone to take pics of the great outdoors while you’re on a walk. See the world through their eyes!

Every morning, rain or shine, without fail, during the stay-at-home order we’re under here in California, Connor Claire and I go out for a walk around the neighborhood, so we can get some fresh air, stretch our legs, and get allllll the wiggles out. We’re usually out about an hour, which is enough time to wear her out before her nap, and that nap time is golden! (I’ll usually do some work or squeeze in a workout.)

Sometimes, we’ll just casually wander around and check out flowers and say hi to the neighborhood cats, but other times I’ll try to do a more structured outdoor activity to keep things interesting, like this one: learning how to take pictures.

Connor took these pictures of our neighborhood…

You definitely don’t need any fancy equipment. Your phone (ideally, with a sturdy case and a screen protector in case of accidental drops) or an old digital camera will work fine.

You also don’t need extensive photography experience. With phones these days, the pictures practically take themselves.

Connor’s hands are still very small, so I help her hold the camera while she takes her pics, but other than that, she makes all the executive art director decisions. When we’re walking around and she sees something she wants to take a picture of, she tells me to stop, and I take the phone/camera out. I help her decide if she wants the picture vertical or horizontal, then we frame the shot, and she pushes the shutter button.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Still like statues: For a clear, sharp picture, you and your little one will want to stand as still as possible to minimize the movement of the camera. I’ll have Connor do a little “wiggle dance” or run a few circles, and then when it’s time to take the picture, we pretend to be statues and stand as still as possible.
  • Choose a theme: Consider choosing a theme before you start your walk, like flowers in your neighborhood, dogs, or numbers. Our theme for our latest photography session was “signs of spring,” which ties in with what we’re doing for preschool homeschool this week.
  • Crazy about collages: If you can print pics at home, print your child’s favorite pics, and have them glue the shots into a collage.

This activity isn’t just for the kids, either. How about stretching your photography muscles, too? Use your phone’s camera on your walks outside to document what moves you!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Well, it looks like I’ll be doing a lot of outdoor activities like this one with CoyCoy in the near future because the schools in Marin will probably be closed until at least May 1.

Spring Makeup Ideas: Blue Eye Makeup With a Green Top

March 25th, 2020 by Karen 8 Comments

blue meghan markle look

Unsolicited life tip: When you unknowingly grow a Machiavellian mustache on your upper lip, it’s probably time to put some makeup on again.

So here we go!

OK, raise your hand ?‍♀️ (which I’m assuming has been vigorously washed with soap for a minimum of 20 seconds) if you tend to go matchy-matchy with your clothes when you wear colorful makeup. BECAUSE I TOTALLY DO. You know that girl wearing orange eyeshadow and orange lipstick and an orange shirt? Yup. So me!

A surprisingly springy combination

I would never think to wear this blue eye makeup with a green shirt (am I the only one?), but when I saw the blue shadow and green outfit on Meghan Markle recently, I was like, “YES. Rock those jewel tones together, Meg!”

I think the blue shadow and green clothing pairing is surprisingly springy, especially if you wear it on a rainy day, which I did. When it’s wet and cold and everything outside is stone cold gray, the blue-green combo stands out even more.

blue meghan markle look

Also, yeah, I know there’s a lot of eyeshadow swatches up in the mix. While I’m usually one for keeping eye makeup streamlined, especially for the past few months with the new job at the bakery and all, this time around I went ham on mixing and blending ALL THE EYESHADOWS. Try your hand at custom mixing your own shades sometime. Mixing and matching is so, so fun.

TLC for Needy Nails: The Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Beautifiers Base and Top Coats, and a BOMB Cuticle Serum

March 24th, 2020 by Karen 21 Comments

sally hansen color therapy
New launches from one of my favorite drugstore nail lines, Sally Hansen

Well, hello, nail polish. NICE TO SEE YOU, OLD FRIEND!

Now that I have a little more time to do something other than an occasional speed mani, I’ve been busting out the accouterments from the new Nail Beautifiers collection in the Sally Hansen Color Therapy Line.

Color Therapy is Sally Hansen’s line of moisturizing polishes infused with argan oil, and I started wearing them a lot after “the gel mani incident.” My nails needed some serious TLC, so I babied them for a couple months and only wore bare nails or Color Therapy until my nails recovered back to their former strength.

There are six treatments in the new Nail Beautifier family, including three base coats, two top coats and a Nail Cuticle Serum.

sally hansen give me a tint
I did this mani while I wrote this post! I used the Nail Corrector, followed by two layers of Color Therapy Sheer in Give Me a Tint, and topped it off with the High Gloss Top Coat. When it dried, I massaged the Nail Cuticle Serum around the base of my nails and my fingertips.

If you’re washing your hands 24/7 like I am…

The Nail Cuticle Serum ($8.99) is THE STUFF. You can use it on bare or polished nails — just apply to the cuticles and nail tips and massage until absorbed. It’s a thick serum, and it isn’t oily, so you aren’t left with slippery, greasy fingers afterwards.

I keep it on my desk and apply it whenever I get a chance, and ever since I’ve been doing this, my cuticles (which had been visibly dry and thirsty and came this close to going full-on raggedy) look and feel so much better.

sally hansen nail cuticle serum
So good!

If you happen to see this online or while you’re out, grab it. Your cuticles will send you a secret love letter ❤️?️ via carrier pigeon declaring their undying affection for your thoughtfulness.

All about the base

If you have some serious ridges like I did after the disastrous gel mani incident, then the Nail Corrector ($8.99), which smooths out dips and drops on the surface of your nails, is for you. It looks like a peachy cream in the bottle, but it applies as a very sheer, barely-there pink.

Do your nail tips chip and split easily? If so, the Strengthening Base Coat ($8.99), which, like the Nail Corrector, looks tinted in the bottle but goes on clear, would be a good choice. Added bonus: It doubles as a top coat in a pinch.

If you’re lucky enough to have healthy nails, grab the Nail Primer ($8.99). It irons out the nails surface just like the Nail Corrector but isn’t as aggressive with the smoothing.

Top it off

Two new top coats reinforce the strength of your nails and the durability of your mani while locking down your nail color. I’m a fan of the High Gloss Top Coat ($8.99), which has a reflective gleaming, glossy shine (so it looks wet even when it’s dry).

Some of my nails tend to split, so I’ll bust out the Strengthening Top Coat ($8.99) and use it on them for added protection.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. On my #stressbaking to-do list this week: SCONES.

I made some terrible ones over the weekend that were just dry and dense and gross and totally inedible.

My first attempt at scones, and for the record…they were terrible!

Do you have a fool-proof scone recipe or any suggestions? Do tell.

Product Spotlight: Laura Mercier Rosé Cheek Color

March 23rd, 2020 by Karen 11 Comments

Rosé all day

“No-makeup” makeup people, take note: This warm pink powder blush will release you from your “blahs” while summoning your cheeks back to life.

I barely wore any makeup last weekend (real talk: I’ve been feeling kinda blah), but I *did* manage to put on some mascara, brow gel and Laura Mercier Rosé today, AND THANK GOODNESS FOR THAT!

Rosé is a warm-toned pink matte powder blush, and I didn’t realize just how much I’ve been neglecting my usual beauty routine lately until I looked in the mirror this morning and saw a mustache worthy of a Disney villain on my upper lip.

via GIPHY

A little makeup was definitely in order.

So, yeah, if you want to feel somewhat functional/normal, if only for a moment, wear blush — ideally, one like Rosé, which has that patented “no-makeup makeup®” thing going. It’s colorful without being intense, and matte, and it doesn’t look heavy or harsh.

Are you the type of person who skips foundation? Or do you just wear a touch of tinted moisturizer? If so, this blush is at its best when it’s dusted directly on bare skin or on top of a minimal base.

I’m an NC42 in MAC, by the way.

Hopefully, someday soon we’ll all have places to go with actual real live people in them again, and Laura Mercier Rosé will be ready. It’s available now on the Ulta website for $30.
