Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 619

March 23rd, 2020 by Karen 53 Comments

life is like a bicycle
Keep moving, my friend.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.

    1. Ocean or mountain?

    Ocean ?

    2. Pepsi or Coke?

Coke, because it tastes more peppery and less sugary. Preferably, it’s in a glass bottle and chilled (tastes totally different than Coke in a can), but I’ll take a fountain Coke over ice, as long as it’s not watered down.

I haven’t had one in years, though. Just small sips from El Hub’s glass here and there, so I wonder if I’d still actually like it… Yeah, I’m pretty sure I would. ?

    3. Have you ever hit a deer?

Nope, knock on wood, but they’re all over the place here. During rutting season you have to be extra careful when you’re driving, especially around blind corners, because bucks will run with the traffic on the roads, weaving between cars and sometimes leaping over the hood! ?

    4. Would you ever get your brows microbladed?

I don’t know. Maybe if I could find someone I could trust 100% who did very natural-looking brows. I get freaked out by the thought of putting my brows into someone else’s hands… It’s a weird control thing, I guess!

    5. How many layers of mascara do you typically wear?

Two layers on my top lashes (sometimes three), but no mascara on my bottom lashes, which is a recent development, because I used to be a lower-lash-mascara kinda gal, but over the last year I’ve learned that the less I wear underneath my eyes, the less tired I look. Go figure.

    I think you’re just what I needed

Hiya. First things first…THIS SONG BY THE CARS. I heard it for the first time in years last weekend, and it was, quite literally, just what I needed. ?

Secondly, El Hub, CoyCoy and I went for a long drive yesterday out to the Marin French Cheese Company. The store and deli were closed, of course, but the time outside the house was just what I needed. We haven’t left our neighborhood in weeks, and it was so nice to be outdoors in a big open space.

There were two other people there along with us, and we gave each other plenty of social distancing space.

It was nice to feel somewhat normal again, even if it was only for a brief moment… I do wonder if things will ever feel truly normal again.

Take care of yourself this week. Love you.

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 599

March 22nd, 2020 by Karen 4 Comments

Spring has sprung! ? — and despite the seriousness of current events, Tabs wouldn’t have let it rain on his parade. Nope. Spring was his favorite season, and he saw it as a time of tremendous creative, mental and spiritual renewal.

Times are tough and getting tougher. Tabs would have said, “Adversity reveals true character.” He was a very inspirational cat.

He was also the greatest springtime kitty supermodel of all time.

PGR (Pretty Girl Rosie), even though she decided to pursue a career in science, has also been inspired by Tabs. She sees me always looking through ad campaigns Tabs did, and the walls in the home office are decorated with poster-sized pictures of Tabs, and I think some of that fabulousness has rubbed off on her, because every once in a while I’ll catch her striking a pose for the camera. ?

I think she might even try to get a few kitty modeling gigs as a side hustle. ?

Karen

Caturday greetings from a new friend

Good morning and happy Caturday from one cat lady’s corner of the Internet in Northern California. How YOU doing? Does the world feel topsy-turvy to you like it does to me? Is uncertainty churning in the pit of your tummy at all hours of the day and night?

Yeah, me too.

I’m naturally wired to worry, and keeping my spirits up hasn’t been easy, but I’m trying. I count my blessings often and I #stressbake. I also try to focus on simple pleasures, one of which is taking long walks with the CoyCoy every morning.

We leave the house right after breakfast and head outside to explore our neighborhood. Over the past few days, we’ve listened to birds sing, waved hi to our neighbors (from six feet away, of course), splashed in puddles, and met a new kitty neighbor.

Say hi to Nine, a gray stray who set up camp down the street from us. According to a friendly cat lady who lives nearby and feeds Nine all the time, he lives on the hill behind condo number 9, and he’s very friendly, but we’ve been told he will nip your fingers if he’s feeling feisty… We visit him every day and offer him treats if he’s around.

I don’t foresee him moving in with us any time soon because Rosie is queen bee around here, but I hope someone in the neighborhood eventually takes him in.

A new kitty friend is always a gift.

  • Apparently, it’s not just an urban myth — stress can actually turn your hair gray, says science.
  • Speaking of hair, bored women are cutting bangs while in quarantine. As someone who’s chopped off her hair under duress (usually in the middle of the night), all I have to say to that is FIGHT THE URGE, GIRL.
  • How LVMH factories in France went from producing perfume to making hand sanitizer in just 72 hours.
  • It’s okay to grieve even the little things we’ve lost during the COVID-19 outbreak.
  • Meet the cat ladies of Benzie County, Michigan.
  • Yoga with cats… It’s a thing.
  • Have you ever wished you could watch two cats “ice skating” on a frozen pool? HERE YA GO.
  • People who are sheltering in place and using Zoom (an online tool for virtual meet-ups) are requesting face filters so they don’t have to do their hair or makeup before meetings.
  • This dermatologist recommends using sunscreen and upping up your face mask game when you’re social distancing.
  • Can coronavirus live on your beauty products?

SUPER CUTE

Stay clam and bake.

I like the way you comb your hair; I like the stylish clothes you wear.

How are you holding up?

Stress Baking While Social Distancing: The Best Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies You’ll Ever Eat

March 20th, 2020 by Karen 14 Comments

gluten free chocolate chip cookie baked
Stress baking is the new normal.

Well, it’s official. I, and all of my former coworkers, have been laid off from the bakery, and I’m filing for unemployment for the first time since the dot-com bust. ?

So much is changing so quickly around the world right now, and I find myself constantly shaking my head in utter disbelief all the time. ? I just… I can’t… Words can’t… It’s surreal, isn’t it? Does not compute.

I know that millions of people are in a similar situation. I’ve been reminding myself to be grateful for what I have, and in this case, grateful for the extra time to spend with El Hub and Connor.

Still, I can’t pretend that my heart doesn’t feel heavy. It does.

To keep my spirit up, I’ve been baking, like, A LOT.

gluten free chocolate chip cookie baked
Here we go.

In the midst of all the whisking, weighing and rolling, I finally found a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie recipe I don’t totally hate (hey, man, it’s harder than you think). After many, many failed attempts, I think I found a winner! ???

These are slightly crunchy around the edge but soft and chewy inside. Mmm… You know Mrs. Fields cookies? These are a lot like them. The only downside is how good they are…because I can’t stop eating them. I’m eating them so fast I could give Cookie Monster a run for his money.

A few baking tips before you start:

  • Room temperature butter: If you have time, take your butter out of the fridge a couple hours ahead of time and leave it on the counter to reach room temperature. How long this will take depends on the temperature of your kitchen, but you’ll know the butter is ready when you can gently press your fingertip into the side.

If you don’t have time to wait, slightly melt the butter in a microwave on low heat in 15-second increments.

  • Room temperature eggs: I also like to take my eggs out and leave them on the counter with the butter, since room temperature eggs incorporate faster than cold eggs do, but you can also use cold eggs straight from the fridge. They’ll just take longer to combine with your dough.
  • Chill that dough: I know it’s tempting to scoop the cookies right after you make the dough, but it’s worth waiting to pop it into the fridge for at least an hour. You want that dough to be cold, homie! Cold dough won’t stick to your hands as much, so it’s easier to roll. Plus, the cold butter in the dough will give more lift to your cookie.
  • Speaking of lift: This recipe calls for a gluten-free flour that already has xantham gum in it, so look for anything that says “1-to-1” on the package. At the bakery we use Cup4Cup, which I like. I also like the King Arthur 1-to-1 as well.
  • Weigh it out: If you can, weigh out your ingredients using a kitchen scale. Accuracy is your ally when it comes to baking.
  • Get to know your oven: An oven thermometer is REALLY helpful, because most ovens aren’t perfectly accurate when it comes to temp… My oven is consistently 25 degrees under the temperature it says on the screen, so if I want to bake something at 350 degrees, I set it for 375.
  • Do a test cookie: Bake one test cookie at a time to figure out the best timing and cookie size.

Scrape down that bowl and that paddle!

Try a couple of them with potato chips (it sounds weird, but it’s delicious).

Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

DESCRIPTION
Slightly crispy around the edge with a soft, chewy middle, these gluten-free chocolate chip cookies are reminiscent of Mrs. Fields at the mall! WARNING: Once you start eating them, you might not be able to stop.

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes to measure and make the dough; however, you’ll want to have enough time to bring your butter to room temperature, as well as time to chill the dough for at least an hour in the fridge (and ideally overnight!) before baking, so plan accordingly
  • Bake Time: 9-11 minutes
  • Total-ish Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes
  • Yield: 3 dozen cookies

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup (227g) room temperature butter (if you don’t have time to do this, then soften it in the microwave on low in 15-second increments until you can gently press your fingertips into the sides)
  • 1 cup (213g) brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup (99g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons gluten-free vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/3 cups (361g) gluten-free 1-to-1 flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (340g) chocolate chips
  • Optional mix ins, like nuts or butterscotch chips, potato chips, pretzels or sprinkles

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugars till fluffy at a low speed for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Beat in the first egg until well incorporated; you’ll know it’s combined when the dough no longer looks shiny. Beat in the second egg along with the vanilla until combined. Continue to beat at a medium speed, and scrape down the paddle and sides of the bowl halfway through to make sure everything is fully incorporated. This step takes between 7-9 minutes, so don’t rush it.
  3. While the butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla are beating, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  4. Separate the dry ingredients into thirds (you can eyeball this; it doesn’t have to be precise), and add each third, one at a time, into your butter and sugar mixture and mix until each is fully incorporated.
  5. Add the chocolate chips, and then beat on low speed. Again, scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl to be sure everything is well blended.
  6. Cover the bowl, and stick it in the fridge for at least one hour to chill the dough. Ideally, though, you’d leave it there overnight. It can stay in there for up to 2 days.
  7. When you’re ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F, then and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Line a scale with parchment paper too, and measure out each cookie to 30g (this is about two tablespoons). Roll them into balls, and place them on the baking sheets with room to spread.
  9. At this point, I like to also mix in different ingredients by hand into each ball for variety. For the batch above, I added some crushed potato chips to some of the cookies.
  10. Bake the cookies for 7 minutes; they’ll be very puffy at this point, since gluten-free baked goods tends to rise higher than gluten-ful ones (it’s the baking soda and baking powder, both of which control the height and spread of the cookies.) Pull out the sheet, noting which side is closest to you (you’ll need this in the next step), and press down gently on each cookie with an oven mitt to flatten them slightly.
  11. When you return the baking sheet to the oven, rotate the pan so the side that was closest to you is now on the opposite side. Bake for an additional 4 minutes, but this depends on how soft you want the center of your cookies. If you want a softer middle, try 2-3 minutes. (Side note: This is where baking your test cookie comes in handy.)
  12. Remove from the oven. Let them rest on the baking sheets for 5 minutes to set, and transfer to racks to cool completely.
  13. Enjoy!

Product Spotlight: Laura Mercier Caviar Volume Mascara

March 19th, 2020 by Karen 15 Comments

Ready to give you a lift

FOR DECADES I believed that a lash curler was a non-negotiable when dealing with stick straight lashes (mine will flex the curl outta everything), but that’s totally not so, man! My opinion changed when Laura Mercier’s marvelous Caviar Volume Mascara, which is part of LM’s permanent collection and available at Ulta for $25, rocked my world.

It all started one day a few weeks ago… I was running late for work and couldn’t find my lash curler, so out of desperation I whacked a few coats of this stuff directly on my uncurled lashes, and it finessed a perfectly lifted curl into place.

I was shocked! In fact, I’m still in awe, and I really have no idea how it works. I almost feel like I’m messing with supernatural blood makeup magic and probably shouldn’t go there, but I can’t help myself, ya know? Not only does this mascara lift and curl lashes without the help of a lash curler, but it also separates and elongates lashes while imparting a noticeable amount of volume, but not so much that your fringe looks fake or spidery.

No lash curler needed, babe.

It also doesn’t smudge or flake, and even though it isn’t technically waterproof, I’ve cried wearing it a few times (yes, I’m a big cry baby), and it didn’t run.

It comes in one shade, a glossy black, and you can find it at Ulta for $25 a tube.

Spring Makeup Ideas: Sparkly Taupes and Purples With a Soft Hint of Pink

March 19th, 2020 by Karen 31 Comments

Big hair, big dreams

It’s weird. Even though the world around me feels like it has gone full-on BONKERS, when I go outside for walks with the Coywolf (and we’ve been going for a lot of them), the great outdoors seems unaware of the sitch in the human world.

Spring, in all her glory, keeps coming.

Case in point: One of the showiest trees in the neighborhood is blooming, and she’s absolutely gorgeous.

(Yes, she’s a dainty lady in my eyes.)

Coy-Coy and I went for several walks yesterday, and on one of them we stopped by to visit our favorite tree. As we stood under the canopy of flowers and looked up, tiny pink petals gently floated onto my hair, and I felt a song in my heart.

Thank you, tree, for your inspiration — makeup and otherwise!

For this springtime makeup look, I did shades of taupe and light purple on the lids, with plummy cheeks and soft pink lips.

Product Spotlight: Laura Mercier Cocoa Caviar Stick Eye Colour

March 18th, 2020 by Karen 4 Comments

laura mercier cocoa
Easy brown smoky eyes courtesy of a single product: Laura Mercier Cocoa!

What you need to know: Laura Mercier Cocoa Caviar Stick Eye Color is a flexible brown cream shadow stick your time-pressed self needs, so if you’re building a better makeup bag and you love a workhorse brown neutral, this absolutely HAS to be in there because it doesn’t move, and you can wear it a bunch of different ways. (It’s available at Ulta for $29.)

This cocoa is a pain in the butt.

It’s the cocoa powder we use at the bakery, and whenever I have to dig into the bin, the powder is so fine that it gets all over the place! — my apron, my leggings, my face, everywhere. As adept as it is at making stuff taste good, it’s highly annoying, especially when you accidentally leave two big ol’ cocoa powder palm prints on your backside and don’t realize it until a stranger buying tuna at Trader Joe’s points it out.

This other Cocoa by Laura Mercier is not a pain in the butt…

Shelter in Place / Social Distancing / Homeschooling Activity: Adventures in Makeup Artistry

March 17th, 2020 by Karen 22 Comments

If you’re sheltering in place over the next couple weeks and looking for things to do with someone in the house, let them unleash their inner artist by doing a makeover…ON YOU!

I busted out an old LE Tarte palette I’ve had for ages but haven’t used, a few matching bright eye pencils, a handful of brushes and a bright lipstick (which I let Connor Claire choose…so of course she picked the brightest reddish orange!).

Then we parked ourselves in her room, played some tunes, and I let her have at it.

On, in case you’re wondering, the lipstick is MAC Retro Matte in Dangerous.

I’m pretty impressed with her application, LOL!
