Fun with Olive & June Summer Brights

June 13th, 2023 by Karen 6 Comments

Two coats of How Do You Spell Bougainvillea?

OK, whatever you do, do not — DO NOT! — attempt to remove your pedicure polish by sticking a toe into the Olive & June Nail Polish Remover Pot.

I’m going to file this life lesson under “things that seemed like a good idea at the time.”

Ha ha ha!

For removing nail polish off of fingers, though, is another story. It’s super easy — pop you nail into the pot, which has a presoaked sponge inside, and move it around a few times.

It’s lot less hassle compared to having to get a cotton pad and a bottle of nail polish remover. It’s so easy, in fact, I’m making it the my weekly nail upkeep routine.

Anywho! Painting nails has been really fun with the Olive & June Mani System that my friend Marisol gifted me for my birthday. Connor has been enjoying it too, and she even volunteered to help out with a couple swatches.

Two coats of House of O&J (left) and two coats of Not a Cloud (right)

We’re wearing three of the six new summer shades! On my fingers, I’m wearing two coats of How Do You Spell Bougainvillea? Connor’s sporting two coats of House of O&J and Not a Cloud.

One thing that’s interesting to me about these particular shades is that they have a level of coverage that’s not quite opaque, so even with two coats, you can see a bit of the whites of your nails coming through if you look very closely. (You can’t see it from an arm’s length away, in case you’re wondering.)

These shades have a tiny smidge of translucency, which seems to be on-trend with all the jelly manis that’ve been happening lately!

I naturally prefer a solid block of color, but the more I wear the jelly-style shades, the more I like it, go figure.

All this to say — even when you know exactly what you like, you just never know if you’ll be into a new trend until you try it. 🙂

Have you tried this type of jelly mani yet? I think you should give it a go!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 785

June 12th, 2023 by Karen 21 Comments

Smiling our way into a new week!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Something in your makeup bag that you need to replace?

I should probably buy another stick of dark brown eyeliner because I have a feeling my Hourglass one is about to peace out. Side note, I’ve discovered that I’m a bougie eyeliner kind of girl. The last few inexpensive ones I’ve purchased made my eyes itch, gah!

2. Have you ever had your brows laminated?

No. I did go through a phase a few years ago when I loved brushed up, bushy brows, but I don’t love the look enough now to make a commitment to it.

3. How are your chopstick skills?

I get by ok with most things. Slippery noodles give me major chopstick anxiety though, ha ha ha!

4. A sunscreen that you like?

For my face, I’ve been into the Laneige one because it sinks in quickly and is super moisturizing. For my body I’ve been liking Banana Boat Light As Air.

5. Your biggest blush pet peeve?

I cannot deal with blush that’s difficult to blend. If it’s patchy or too overly pigmented and I need to be there swiping back and forth for days, then forget about it.

6. What’s your favorite summer fruit?

I have so many! I think summer is the best time for fruit. I love watermelon, cherries, strawberries and peaches, especially.

7. Did you get in trouble for cursing when you were a child?

Oh my gosh, I didn’t even attempt to curse when I was kid. There was an unspoken understanding that we were never to use foul language around adults.

8. Body splash, hair perfume or eau du toilette?

I’ll take a few spritzes of a summery eau du toilette today.

Hi, my sweet friend! Happy Monday. It’s the unofficial start of summer here in my neck of the woods, but you wouldn’t know it by the gloomy, overcast weather. I don’t mind the cool temps, though. I find that as I get older, I like it more than I used to.

What are you up to this week? Connor starts summer camp, so I’ll be juggling work and driving her to and from dance camp. One of these days I’m gonna put a tip jar in my car for chauffeur services!

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 765

June 11th, 2023 by Karen 1 Comment

Tabs

Well, with it being the unofficial start of summer and all, we’ve had lots of outdoor adventures on our minds here at Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC.

Out of habit, I did the monthly start-of-summer maintenance on my tabby’s favorite grill.

We had so many good times using that grill… As you know, Tabs was a social butterfly, so naturally, almost every other weekend in the summertime, headquarters would be filled with his friends, family and business associates. Tabs would fire up the grill while simultaneously hosting dozens upon dozens of cats and, occasionally, an important human.

I think it originally started as like a networking angle for the business, but eventually I believe he just loved entertaining.

I think he also liked the gluttony part of it… You know, you could not keep that cat away from a perfectly braised and marinated hunk of meat.

I sure do miss his kabobs…

Of course, grilling wasn’t his only outdoor pastime. Basically, he just liked being outside.

Rosie

Although we all know Rosie is a workaholic, she slows down just a teeny, tiny bit in the summer.

I’ve gotten her to spend some time in the great outdoors with me this year and have found that she does enjoy barbecues and leisurely picnics.

I do have to repeatedly encourage her to spend time socializing, though, rather than simply exploring the flora and fauna around her.

She is getting better at it. 🙂

Saturday Surfing, June 10, 2023!

June 10th, 2023 by Karen 5 Comments

It’s a colorful kind of Saturday

Good morning and happy Saturday!

I’m still riding on a big wave of birthday joy and wanted to thank you for your well-wishes and for sharing sweet stories of good things that’ve happened to you lately. You brought a smile to my face.

On a beauty note, how cute is this rainbow of nail polish by Olive & June? A friend gave me the Mani System for my birthday, and so after many, many weeks of dark, moody Chanel nails, I think it’s time for something bright.

These shades are from Olive & June’s summer collection. From the left to right…

  • Starshower — A clear rose gold glitter
  • How Do You Spell Bougainvillea? — A hot magenta purple
  • Flowerpot — A burt orange terracotta
  • Bocce Ball — A fresh grassy green
  • Not a Cloud — A cloudless skin blue
  • House of O&J — A regal deep purple
  • The Top Coat — A glossy top coat

Are you doing nails today, too? If yes, what color? 🙂

This week’s reading

  • 9 blush sticks for those who love effortless, summer makeup looks (aka me!).
  • Of course Stevie Nicks is on this list of 15 beauty muses who inspire ’70s-style summer makeup.
  • Get the look of glossy lids.
  • Quantas, Australia’s national airline, will scrap its gender-based uniform guidelines. Now male cabin crew can wear make-up, and women can opt to ditch high heels.
  • If your makeup is pilling, here’s what to do to make it stop.
  • Here are some perfumes for the next time you want to conjure the scent and vibe of the American desert. Side note: I really want to smell Estee Lauder Desert Eden now. You know I love a rose note!
  • Can fragrance brands make a truly sustainable scent?
  • Honestly, I love a rollerball.

The music of my formative years!

I like the low-maintenance part

I did this the other day and it was so fun

Pretty purple

Ohemgee, SUN IN!

One of the greats

I hope the rest of your weekend is relaxing and peaceful.

A Birthday Request

June 9th, 2023 by Karen 30 Comments

Today’s my birthday — forever 43, baby! LOL. Even though I don’t really have any exciting plans because I have lots of work to catch up on (I swear, the end-of-the-year school activities are intense), I’m feeling really good because I’m happy to be alive and to be surrounded by so much love.

I do have one small birthday request to ask of you, my friend. I want to keep the feeling good vibes, so if you could please share with me one nice thing that’s happened to you recently, that would be the best birthday present. When you feel joy, I feel joy, too. 🙂

I hope you have a fabulous Friday and that things are spectacular on your end.

What Are Some Beauty Trends from the Last Few Years That You Tried?

June 8th, 2023 by Karen 4 Comments

Once upon a time, I loved an accent nail

It’s crazy to me how beauty trends constantly evolve and change, and how our own tastes for those trends change!

For example, I remember when accent nails first hit the scene and thinking that it was a little odd to have a single nail with a different color, but eventually I came around to liking it and rocking it all the time. This was 2013 or 2014?

Anywho, now, years later, I much prefer to have a more traditional mani with just a single color across all my fingers. No more accent nails for me (for now, at least).

Some other trends within the last few years that I tried, in no particular order…

  • Bold brows — I even went through an intense phase where I did a complicated routine with carved out brows, OMG!
  • Nose contouring — I did this for a while and liked how it looked in pictures, but then I stopped doing it when I felt like I *had* to do it every day to just step out of the house. I think that feeling like I needed to correct how my nose looked made me perceive that there was something wrong with my features, and I didn’t think that was healthy for me mentally in the long term. So I stopped.
  • Overdrawn lips — Again, I like how this looked in pictures. In real life though, I think it might’ve just looked like I couldn’t figure out where my real lip line was. LOL! At the time I thought it was cute, though.
  • Intense bronzer — Man, I wore so much circa 2014!

How about you? What are some beauty trends from the last few years that you’ve tried? Do you still like them?

MBB Reader Recommendations for Moisturizing Hair Products That Don’t Weigh Your Strands Down!

June 6th, 2023 by Karen 5 Comments

I do my hair toss, check my nails…

Good morning, my beautiful friend! Last Saturday/Caturday you really pulled through when I asked for recommendations for hair products that hydrate without weighing your strands down. Thank you so much. 🙂 Me and my hella dry mane are so ready to invest in some new things.

Get ready to take some notes…

MBB Reader recommended hair products for gals over 40!

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Lite with 10 Benefits, $40

This spray leave-in conditioner is designed to repair, restore, detangle and remove frizz without adding weight.

CL says that she’s been using it for a couple of years now, and that “it works pretty well at detangling, smoothing and moisturizing hair (just a little).”

OGX Coconut Miracle Oil, $10

Ooh, I like the price tag on this hair oil treatment! It’s made to repair and soften thick hair while adding soft bounce and shine.

Laura says she found this product by following Abbey Yeung, who recommends using the oil from mid-length to the ends *before* shampooing to help with moisture and hair health.

Suzanne C’s recommendations

Suzanne offered this extensive list of recommendations. Thanks, Suzanne!

In her words:

Yes, I agree – I hit my 40’s and it’s like I have someone else’s head of hair. I’ve had to completely change how I style it, the products I us, and definitely how it can/can’t be cut. I’m getting the hang of it, but there were some dark, dark hairstyling years in between.

A few products I would recommend:

  1. Briogeo’s Superfood Avocado + Kiwi Moisture Leave-In Conditioner. Fantastic detangler, you don’t need much, and it doesn’t weigh hair down. (I love Briogeo so much!)
  2. Also, my niece swears by OGX Nourishing + Coconut Miracle Oil, specifically the mist, to combat frizz.
  3. But this is my regular routine: wash with Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi shampoo, condition every other shower with Trader Joe’s Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Mask (about $4/5 oz), and a tiny bit of Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hydrating Hair Oil Serum when my hair has dried. (The mini size lasts me for months.) When I don’t use the TJ’s mask, I use the Briogeo.

Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother, $30

This smoothing, conditioning and strengthening leave-in styling treatment is made for all hair types! Rachel recommends it, and says, “Just use it on your ends and it works so well when you’re in between trims and ends are looking dry! Got a sample of it and I’ve since bought 2 full size ones. It’s not heavy at all.”

Should we keep this list going? I think so! If you have any recommendations and would like to weigh in, please leave a comment below.

Thanks again, gals! Have a terrific Tuesday.

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 784

June 5th, 2023 by Karen 14 Comments

you are worthy
A gentle reminder on this beautiful Monday.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Neon bright eyeshadow — yes or no?

I don’t mind it! I like it when it’s worn in an edgy, casual way that’s not too overdone. I remember seeing a look a while back with a gal rocking bright orange shadow as a simple swipe of color on her lids, and I thought it looked super cool.

2. Have you ever had eyelash extensions?

Nope. I’ve been curious for sure, but I don’t have the time, energy or the beauty budget to commit to them. It’s just another thing to keep track of, you know? I’d rather just curl my lashes and chuck on some mascara and call it a day.

3. How do you feel about wearing shorts?

I like them in the summer because it gets super hot where I live, but now that I’m in my 40s I’m more picky about the fit, length, material, etc. If I’m gonna wear shorts in public, they’re gonna be looser around the thighs, have a mid-to-high rise and be long enough to cover my bum when I bend over, OMG!

4. What’s a multitasking makeup product that you like?

Oh gosh, bronzer for the win. Cream or powder, it doesn’t matter, just as long as I can dust it on the high points of my face for some warmth and swipe some into my crease for definition.

5. Your sunscreen pet peeve?

I have so many. I guess the main one would be when it feels sticky after you rub it in. When I can feel that suction-y, sticky feeling on the backs of my knees, the crook of my elbows or my neck skin. I just can’t deal!

6. How does your ideal gloss feel like on your lips?

Smooth, lightweight, a little sticky but not overly sticky. I really like how the Tower 28 gloss feels on my lips!

7. Speaking of lipgloss, would you rather have one that smells and tastes like pepperoni or tuna?

So gross! Pepperoni sounds a little less disgusting, though.

Happy Monday, my friend. How are you feeling? I’m a little touchy because I booked my dental appointment to deal with my two cavities on Wednesday, so while I’m relieved to be getting it done, I’m not looking forward to it.

I guess I should just be glad to have the access to a good dentist, sigh.

Anywho, I hope you’re feeling good today, and that the people around you are nice and lift you up.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
