Saturday Surfing, April 29, 2023!

April 29th, 2023 by Karen 1 Comment

Hey friend! We made it to Caturday, woo hoo! In the spirit of all things fabulously feline, here is Rosie wearing a sparkly gymnastics leotard to brighten up your morning.

Speaking of bright things, I’ve been trying to push myself just a little with makeup. Yesterday I wore a lil’ slice of shimmery green liner (Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Freak) for a tiny peek of color on my lids.

I started by lining my upper lash lines with a black gel liner and an angled brush, and blending a single shimmery shadow cream stick, Laura Mercier Strapless, on my lids for a touch of definition. Then I traced the edge of the black liner with my green pencil. Easy peasy!

I paired it with minimal skin and lips because 1) that’s how I roll these days, and 2) it’s been really hot, and just the thought of full-on base was suffocating. I might try it in the future with a more photo-friendly foundation, etc., but I think there’s something very cool about minimalist skin with some color on the lids.

Anywho, I’m going to try it with some other colors soon. I hope you give this liner a go!

This week’s reading

  • “The over-40 demo has seemingly been poised to make its way to the forefront of the beauty industry for a few years.”
  • These are the allegedly the 11 best waterproof makeup products of 2023, and now I want to try that Victoria Beckham shadow stick.
  • Flashing back to the era when Demeter had us smelling like every food imaginable!
  • Get a glimpse behind the perfume-making scenes at Chanel’s Grasse fields.
  • “While the average person may not consider spritzing on perfume to be witchcraft, Little says there’s an inherent magic when it comes to scent.” Side note: I’m gonna buy some roses and a rose-based perfume ASAP.

Happy Friday! Sunscreen, Essie Glitters, the CVS Coupon Skinny and $5 Bike Shorts from Old Navy

April 28th, 2023 by Karen 3 Comments

Girl, first off, happy Friday. It’s a hot one here in Northern California, which is why 1) I’ve spent the morning looking for shorts (hello $5 jersey bike shorts from Old Navy), and 2) I went to CVS to buy sunscreen. While I was there I had the most enlightening chat about sunscreen with another sun protection enthusiast! Gotta love those random beauty chats with strangers.

Anywho, she noticed immediately how I was carrying three bottles of sunscreen (more on this in a second), and I noticed that she had a wide brim hat and oversized sunglasses!

We got to talking about our favorite sunscreens and how we both loved trying them all. I convinced her to try a bottle of Black Girl Sunscreen Kids (SO GOOD), and she gave me the skinny on using CVS coupons.

Oh my gosh, I had no idea that CVS coupons were so good! There was a Banana Boat buy one get one 50% off sale, and I got an additional $2 off coupon on top of that. I ended up getting a $12 bottle of sunscreen for $7!

I also ended up with a 30% off coupon for my next purchase! I’m going to save it for a pricier bottle of La Roche Posay Melt In Sunscreen Milk, which is what the lady who I was chatting with ended up buying with her coupon.

Anywho, side note, all this talk about saving money means I’m officially turning into my mom. LOL!

While I was there, I also grabbed a few things from Essie: a clear Gel Couture Top Coat, two glitters (Birthday Girl and Feel the Fizzle) and a pale creamy pink Gel Couture shade called Fairy Tailor.

I’m going to do this unicorn mani I saw on Essie’s Instagram.

So pretty, right?

It’s been an exciting morning! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the day (and the weekend) has in store.

Hope you’re doing great and that you’re having a fabulous Friday!

Unexpected Mint Green Makeup of the Day

April 27th, 2023 by Karen 9 Comments

This makeup did out turn out anything close to what I was going for, LOL! Does that ever happen to you?

I saw this beautiful picture of black liner with mint green accents on the Shu Uemura Instagram, which was my original inspiration.

Isn’t it so cool? I love how it’s creative but doesn’t feel overworked.

Anywho, I don’t know what I was thinking giving myself 15 minutes to try to recreate something similar! Maybe if I had an hour or two I could’ve gotten there, but alas, it did not happen. I put way too much shimmery mint green eyeshadow into the inner corner, so I ended up buffing it all out.

I kinda like how the sparkles traveled haphazardly over my lids, though!

I’m wearing a new foundation that I picked up at the Sephora Sale — Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin in the shade 8 Warm. I used two pumps and set it with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural. It was hot in Northern California yesterday and it held up well despite the warm temps.

Oh, and the glossy lip! I’m really into shine these days. It’s Hourglass gloss in Canvas, in case you’re curious.

Have a great rest of your Purrsday-Thursday. We’re almost to the weekend!

In Case You Need Some Creative Makeup Inspiration Today

April 26th, 2023 by Karen 11 Comments

I wish my looks were as fun as Connor’s. The other day she asked if she could play with makeup, and this is what she came up with. Not a boring brown eyeshadow or neutral lip in sight, unlike yours truly, LOL!

In addition to the hot pink leopard-inspired dots and the blue brows, she also used the lipstick as a stain on her lower lip, too.

Oh, and peep the tiny hot pink heart placed strategically at the corner of her eye!

Oh, this age is so much fun. I feel like I say that about every current age she’s in, but this one has been a blast, especially when I see her stretch her creativity.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

If There’s One Thing You Grab Next Time You’re at NARS…

April 25th, 2023 by Karen 6 Comments

Please let it be Dolce Vita. You’ve gotta get the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil version of it, though, not the lipstick. While the lipstick is pretty, I think the Velvet Matte Pencil is easier to apply and that much more user friendly.

It’s great if you want to wear something colorful on your lips that’s 1) low effort and 2) goes with most everything!

In the makeup I’m wearing today, I paired it with NARS Dolce Vita blush and Laura Mercier Strapless Caviar Stick cream shadow. I knocked a little bronzer (MAC Give Me Sun) into my crease for a touch of warmth, too.

Do you love Dolce Vita as much as I do? It’s a classic!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Hope you’re having a terrific Tuesday!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 778

April 24th, 2023 by Karen 19 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Mineral or chemical sunscreen today?

Chemical filters today; the mineral ones have not been playing well with my skin lately. (Too drying.)

2. Which ’80s trend would you revisit right meow: big hair, oversized shoulder pads or bright, contoured blush?

Big hair for sure, but I’d like to update it in some way to make it modern. I’d use less crunchy styling products (oh gosh, remember how crispy everyone’s hair was?) and skip the spiral perm.

3. Something nice that happened last weekend?

We went on a short overnight family trip to Sacramento to cheer Connor on at a dance competition. I really enjoyed it. Family time at this age (she just turned 7) is the best!

4. Last piece of makeup that impressed you?

Caviar Shadow Stick in Strapless by Laura Mercier! It’s a gorgeous shimmery golden taupe I bought on a whim last week.

5. Are you ready for summer?

Yes and no. We had a long, wet winter, and I’m tired of being cold, so I’m looking forward to being warm again. At the same time, though, I’m not ready for it to be blistering hot every time I step outside my door, LOL! I’m definitely looking forward to being outside and going camping. I can’t wait to spend time with the Coywolf, too.

6. Rate your current makeup skill from 1 to 10 (with 10 being off-the-charts incredible).

Hmm, overall? I guess about a six or a seven if we’re talking strictly everyday wearable makeup, LOL! I’m deeply out of practice when it comes to makeup for photography and creative looks, though.

7. Pick one: an amazing wardrobe of clothes that fit great or a hair stylist who knows your hair well and cuts it perfectly?

While a holy grail stylist would certainly come in handy, I’m so sick of wearing the same five shirts over and over again. I’d take the clothes on the condition that I wouldn’t have to spend the time shopping for them.

8. What shall we do on a Friday night — karaoke or dancing?

Girl, let’s do both!

9. Where is the best place in your town for lunch with a friend?

There’s two places that I like – Blue Barn for their salads and fries, and Creekside Bakery for their avocado toast, which is purr-fection!

10. What’s on your lips today?

Good old NARS Dolce Vita, but in the crayon formula. I prefer the lip crayon over the lipstick these days!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

P.P.S. Happy Monday, my friend. My heart is so full today from spending the weekend with Connor and El Hub, and so I want to pass that happiness on to you. I hope your Monday is filled with plenty of love and joy! Sending you good vibes today and for the rest of the week.

Tabs serving fierce dance looks…

Man, what a weekend! We just got back from one of Connor’s dance competitions in Sacramento. It was quite the “to do,” but you know who really knew how to serve fierce dance lewks?

You guessed it — Tabs! 🤣

A lot of people didn’t know this about him, but he used to sneak out of the house to go out dancing…

Yup, he did it all the time. He just loved rockin’ out and shakin’ his groove thing.

Sure, when he got older, he traded in his tap shoes for DJ equipment, but he never really quit dancing entirely.

In fact, he performed in the Novato Cat Ballet Company’s rendition of The Nutcracker 12 years in a row.

Rosie rocking the floor

The whole neighborhood is filled with feline dancers, including Rosie, of course, which is no big surprise when you consider how hard she works as a cat scientist in her day job.

I mean, she has to do something to let off steam.

It’s always the quiet ones, right? 😺

Saturday Surfing, April 22, 2023!

Saturday adventures with makeup!

Good morning and happy, happy Caturday! I went to Sephora yesterday afternoon to return the Charlotte Tilbury concealer (’twas too light, just as I suspected), and to the surprise of absolutely no one, I ended up grabbing a few things.

Well, I legitimately “needed” (air quotes) another tube of Hourglass Retouching Fluid for my under-eye area. And a new mascara. And a couple Sephora Collection eyeliners. And the most beautiful golden taupe Laura Mercier Cream Shadow Stick called Strapless.

I’m looking forward to playing. 🙂

Um, does anybody else want one of these masks now?

LOVE this makeup!

An entire look with just 6 products? Yes, please.

Someone please make this for me.

Peep the eyebrows.

What are you up to this weekend? Whatever it is, I hope you get to spend some time outside.
