How Old Were You When You Got Your First Makeover at a Counter? Tell Me About It.

September 2nd, 2014 by Karen 26 Comments

Time for a trip down memory lane
Time for a trip down memory lane…

The year was 1989.

Saved by the Bell was in its inaugural season (Zack and Kelly 4 ever!), and I was just a wee lass of 14, but because I was a freshman in high school, of course I thought I was all grown up and mature.

LOL!

Little did I know…

That fall my mom took me on my very first trip to a makeup counter. It was Clinique.

It’s one of my fondest makeup memories, and one of my favorite memories with my mom, because she’s never been a real makeup person at all, but she did it for me.

I was devouring teen magazines at the time and scouring them for makeup tips and stuff (oh, to live in the time before beauty blogs) when one day, on the drive to school, my mom asked me if I was interested in going to get some makeup.

Uh…of course I said yes. 🙂

So, that weekend we went to a Clinique counter at the Newpark Mall. I picked out a blush, an eyeshadow (’twas pink and blue… So late ’80s!), a lipstick and a foundation.

No mascara, though, because my mom deemed it “too mature.”

Not to be overly dramatic…but that trip kind of changed my life. Before that trip to the Clinique counter, I was forced to sneak and wear makeup on the down-low because my parents were very strict.

Finally, I didn’t have to sneak around anymore, and it was pure joy. The makeup floodgates opened. I could finally express myself without hiding.

Your turn! How old were you when you got your first makeover at a counter? Tell me about it.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I hope you had a wonderful Labor Day, babe. Ours was nice. We spent the afternoon in the city at Golden Gate Park, and I did something new, too. El Hub and I rented a paddleboat and tooled around Stow Lake, which I don’t remember ever even seeing before (and I lived right next to the park for a couple years!). It was quite a fun day.

Feed Parched Paws Rhubarb & Roses: Molton Brown London Rhubarb & Rose Replenishing Hand Cream

September 1st, 2014 by Karen 8 Comments

Molton Brown London Rhubarb & Rose Replenishing Hand Cream

Molton Brown London Rhubarb & Rose Replenishing Hand Cream

Surprise! — Molton Brown London’s Rhubarb & Rose Replenishing Hand Cream ($15) smells neither like roses nor rhubarb, even though it does contain the extracts of both botanicals.

That said, I wouldn’t have been surprised if the brand had attempted said wacky scent combo and managed to pull it off. They are, after all, the gang behind Paradisiac Pink Pepperpod, which seemed to me like it would smell, I dunno, funky and spicy, but somehow — don’t ask me how — it totally worked.

To my basset hound-like sense of smell, Rhubarb & Rose hand cream evokes fancy fizzy citrus cocktails. It has notes of yuzu (a citrus fruit originally from East Asia), grapefruit and mandarin. My schnoz also picks up a hint of sweet champagne. The concoction is very crisp and invigorating.

Quite the pick-me-up when I wear it.

The moisturizing cream also doesn’t coat my claws with an annoying sticky or greasy film, and it’s always quick to absorb.

Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the pink tube is cute. 🙂

There’s even a matching hand wash which, not gonna lie, I’m kind of obsessed with.

“Why?” you may ask.

Well…because it comes with a pink bow.

I’m a hand cream junkie (I always, ALWAYS, have one in my purse, and another one on my desk) and this one is my current crush. A 1.4-oz. tube of Rhubarb & Rose Replenishing Hand Cream will set you back $15, and you can find it now at Neiman Marcus stores and online.

Laura Mercier Verbena Infusion Gel Body Scrub and Dry Oil Body Mist: Fitting for a Fragrant Summer Sendoff

September 1st, 2014 by Karen 4 Comments

Laura Mercier Verbena Infusion Gel Body Scrub and Dry Oil Body Mist

Laura Mercier Verbena Infusion Gel Body Scrub and Dry Oil Body Mist

When I first fell for Laura Mercier’s Lemon Verbena Infusion, summer was just beginning, so today, with Labor Day being the unofficial last weekend of summer, I gave the season its swan song with the same light, refreshing scent (via different products).

Laura’s new Gel Body Scrub ($40) and Dry Oil Body Mist ($45) are two great ways to spruce up your bath game. The Gel Body Scrub has an interesting bouncy texture that I like. When you squeeze it between your fingers, it almost feels like you’re squishing a gritty marshmallow.

But…I mean that in a good way. It’s weird but cool.

Then there’s the Dry Oil Body Mist, which absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave my skin feeling icky or greasy. Perfect for when I’m too lazy to bother with body lotion after a shower (read: often). I’ll just spray this all over my skin while it’s still wet, and let the lemon verbena scent take me away…

You can sniff both of them online now and at Laura Mercier counters.

For Comfort and Eye-Catching Color, Try Sonia Kashuk’s $8.99 Lustrous Shine Lip Crayons

September 1st, 2014 by Karen 10 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Lustrous Shine Lip Crayon in Peony
Wearing Sonia Kashuk’s new Lustrous Shine Lip Crayon in Peony ($8.99), one of four shades available now at Target

Yet one more reason to go fan-girl over Sonia Kashuk: the unfathomably high levels of pigment in her new Lustrous Shine Lip Crayons.

I can’t believe these $8.99 retractable crayons aren’t more expensive. Smooth, silky and lightweight like a lip balm, they remind me a lot of pricier products from Too Faced and Benefit.

Rated X-cellent, the Tom Ford Contouring Cheek Color Duo in Softcore Is Making Sculpted Dreams Come True

September 1st, 2014 by Karen 12 Comments

Tom Ford Softcore Contouring Cheek Color Duo
Wearing the new Tom Ford Contouring Cheek Color Duo in Softcore ($77) on my cheeks

My kneecaps liquified into jiggly piles of pudding when I swatched the deep red terracotta shade from Tom Ford’s new Contouring Cheek Color Duo in Softcore ($77) and found out that — aaah! — it has a matte finish.

Matte.

Finish.

YES!

It’s what I was hoping for from Stroked, the other Cheek Duo Tom Ford released for fall, but didn’t get.

Now, Softcore isn’t your run-of-the-mill, standard issue contouring palette. You’ll find no flat browns or grayed-out taupes here.

Tom Ford Softcore Contouring Cheek Color Duo

Instead, it has a dark terracotta red (to sculpt out the hollows just below the apples of your cheeks) and a lighter shimmery, peachy pink (to reflect light off the high points of your upper cheekbones). Very retro ’80s fab, and if you’ve ever wanted to look like you just stepped out of a Jody Watley video circa 1984 — I totally have, not gonna lie! — then this duo could make your sculpted cheek dreams come true.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 336

September 1st, 2014 by Karen 34 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for September 1, 2014

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. This morning we’re getting brunch at the local greasy spoon. What’s your order?
Ooh! Banana pancakes, two eggs over easy (please, not over medium), hash browns, a side of fruit (easy on the mellon) and coffee (with tons of cream and sugar).

I swear, I wake up ravenous every morning, as if I’ve been hibernating all winter long. It’s dangerous when we go out to eat, like going grocery shopping when you’re starved, because I end up ordering more than I can actually consume, but whatevs. Bring it on!

  2. When in doubt, throw on ______.
A bright lipstick, ’cause at least you’ll look like you tried, and/or some black stretchy pants, ’cause then at least you’ll be comfortable.
  3. Have you ever been sailing?
I have not, even though I live near San Francisco Bay, which is often covered by sailboats.

The problem is, horror movies. I’ve watched one too many of them involving sailboats, freak storms and pirates…

  4. Do your parents still live in your childhood home?
They do. They’ve lived in the same house for over 30 years, which is neat when I go home to visit. It brings back a lot of memories.
  5. Tom Ford African Violet

  6. A nail polish shade you never get tired of wearing?
    Tom Ford’s African Violet.

It’s such a bright, happy shade, but it’s one of those that also has kind of a tough girl edge at the same.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

Good morning, glory. 🙂 Happy Labor Day, which I hope you’re celebrating by not working (or not working very hard).

I love it when holidays fall on a Monday because, seriously, Mondays can use all the help they can get.

We haven’t figured out what we’re going to do yet — maybe drive up to Guerneville and the Russian River, or maybe go hiking on Mount Tam. Whatever we do, though, I want it to be at least partly outside. Gotta soak up as much sunshine as possible (while wearing sunscreen, of course).

What are you doing today?

Karen

7 Ways to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

August 30th, 2014 by Karen 304 Comments

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
A Sephora giveaway on Makeup and Beauty Blog

“Let her play with Lego, for crying out loud!”

I’m sitting here on the couch with the laptop watching Extreme Guide to Parenting, and I just heard El Hub yell that from the other room.

And he’s not even watching the show. He’s just eavesdropping, LOL!

Rise and shine, pal o’ mine! It’s caturday! 🙂 Do you know where your husky tabby is?

The one who manages this office is disgruntled and pacing around the house because he wants to go outside. There are these crows who are sort of casing the joint. They’re sitting in the closest tree branches, cawing at the top of their crow lungs, and it’s p*ssing Tabs off. He’s like, “Dammit! Those effing birds!”

Poor kitty…

In other news, it’s giveaway time. Good luck to you. I hope you have a great weekend, too. El Hub and I are talking about going kayaking again on the Russian River tomorrow, but we’ll see. We have a couple other things to do. One of them, actually, involves something special for the cat enthusiasts tomorrow afternoon, so if you have a kitty (or two or 12), be sure to check back tomorrow.
