Unsung Makeup Heroes: Hourglass Femme Rouge Lipstick in Vintage

August 28th, 2014 by Karen 15 Comments

Hourglass Femme Rouge Lipstick in Vintage
Wearing Femme Rouge Lipstick in Vintage ($30) by Hourglass, an unsung makeup hero!

Ironically, my favorite lipstick (this week) is a modern twist on a traditional idea. It’s called Vintage, and I think of it as a modern twist on a traditional nude lipstick for fall.

I’m kind of loving that idea, the idea of lips that are slightly richer, and maybe a few shades darker, than your natural lip color.

Tom Ford’s fabulous new rich, rosy brown Lip Color in Negligee has some of that same vibe.

The whole idea is just so different from what I picture in my head when I think “nude lips,” which over the past few years have meant a lot of light peach, pink and beige.

Barbie lips, so to speak.

I was digging around in my lipstick collection last weekend for something modern and nude when I re-discovered this old friend’s charms — Vintage ($30), a shade in the Hourglass Femme Rouge lipstick line, and one of my unsung makeup heroes.

Next Time You Have a Wedding, Prom or Other Big Event To Go To and Have a Lot of Crap To fit Into a Teeny, Tiny Purse, Keep This Makeup Tip in Mind

August 28th, 2014 by Karen 32 Comments

Whiting & Davis Gold Mesh Clutch
My Emmys accessories: Whiting & Davis Gold Mesh Clutch (which fit everything I needed during the show), cuff is by Erickson Beamon, earrings by Alexis Bittar @alexisbittar @whitingdavis @ericksonbeamon

Why are dainty, diminutive clutches so darned popular at fancy parties and events?

I mean, they’re kind of inconvenient. Because they’re so tiny, they don’t steal any thunder from the dresses (always a good thing), so I guess that’s probably the reason, but dang if they aren’t totally impractical.

In my hotel room on Monday, as I rushed to get ready and struggled to squeeze everything I wanted/needed to bring with me to the show into the spritely Whiting & Davis Gold Mesh Clutch, I started to panic a little.

The clutch was just too small.

I’d planned to do a heavier full-coverage look for my foundation and powder and touch it up at night with a powder compact, rather than just with blotting papers (I felt like the powder would do a better job keeping everything intact).

But between my phone, keys, one lipstick, a lip liner, gloss and, um…a cardboard cutout of my cat, there was no room left in the clutch! — which was incidentally smaller than my size 7 shoes.

Best-Smelling Scented Makeup or Beauty Product (Not Including Actual Perfumes)?

August 27th, 2014 by Karen 45 Comments

Guerlain Terracotta 4-Seasons Bronzering Powder in Ebony
Guerlain’s scent-sational Terracotta Four Seasons Bronzing Powder in Ebony, $76

Guerlain’s bronzers and my basset hound-like sense of smell get along swimmingly. I am seriously addicted to their scent! — which is weird, because when I think of scented products, I don’t usually think of bronzers being high up on the list.

But I dunno… For me these are. The smile-inducing scent is a little powdery, with a dash of jasmine and tiare flower/gardenia. It reminds me of very good things, like hugs from my mom, Hawaiian tradewinds and a botanical garden at night.

The scent doesn’t really linger on my face, but I always catch a good whiff of it when I open the compact, and then again when I apply the powder.

How about you, sweets? In your olfactory estimation, what’s the best-smelling scented makeup or beauty product (not including actual perfumes)?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Any Time Is a Good Time for Bronzer With Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder in 05 Sun Brunettes

August 26th, 2014 by Karen 9 Comments

Guerlain Terracotta Light in 05 Sun Brunettes

Guerlain Terracotta Light in 05 Sun Brunettes

Around my house, bronzer usually comes up as a topic of conversation every spring and summer.

Of course, most of those conversations take place between a cat and myself, but let’s not get sidetracked. 🙂

Bronzer. Usually a spring/summer thing, but my love for it has no seasonal bounds.

Like, if we were attending the world’s largest fall/winter makeup convention, I would have packed four bronzers for the two-day trip. “Yeah, yeah, full coverage and berry lips,” I’d whine. “I’m bored. Let’s talk about bronzer.”

This pan o’ bronzing prettiness here is Guerlain’s Terracotta Light 05 Sun Brunettes ($52), and it creates the most gorgeous peachy golden tan.

It also has a light sheen that, together with the color, makes it look like sun-dappled skin.

Very pretty lightly dusted all over for some warmth.

In addition to 05 Sun Brunettes, there are three other shades in the family — 02 Blondes (with soft suntan tones), 03 Brunettes (rich bronze tones) and 04 Sun Blondes (bronzed pink and tan tones) — and their names are basically weak suggestions. In other words, you don’t have to be blonde to wear the blonde shade or brunette to wear the brunette shade. If you’re interested, you could try them all, and pick the one you like best.

They’re available now at Guerlain counters, Sephora and also online, too.

The Sonia Kashuk Eye Palette in Sweet Nothings Is Sweet on Lids

August 26th, 2014 by Karen 6 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Eye Palette in Sweet Nothings

Sonia Kashuk Eye Palette in Sweet Nothings

If Sonia Kashuk’s latest palette could talk, it would whisper sweet nothings…to your lids.

“Hello, my darling. You’re looking lovely tonight.”

“My, what beautiful lashes you have. They’re so lush and curly.”

“In a word, stunning. You have the curviest crease I’ve ever seen.

In a mix of matte and shimmers, the six subtle white, beige and taupe shades that comprise Sonia’s Sweet Nothings Eye Palette ($14.95) whisper a story about color.

“We’re perfect for highlighting brow bones,” they say, “among our other talents.”

This Sweet Nothing is looking for love at Target stores and online at target.com.

Shh… Hush now. 🙂

Do the Chop! This Easy Trick Could Solve Your False Lash Woes

August 26th, 2014 by Karen 15 Comments

Ardell 120
Eureka! Having a revelation while wearing a pair of Ardell 120s…

Wow, babe. MIND BLOWN.

I don’t know why it took me so long to figure this out, but better late than never.

First, a little backstory. Last Saturday I was testing out a possible Emmys makeup look — yes, I’m kind of nerdy that way, but it never hurts to be prepared. I got it into my head that I wanted to wear a big, dramatic pair of false lashes to the show.

The thing is, some big lashes can be super uncomfortable off the shelf. I’ll usually trim them down to size, but even so — the big ones can still be uncomfortable.

I guess I have an oddly shaped lash line or something because the inner lash band always pokes me right in a sensitive spot, and it’s astronomically annoying.

So, I was thinking about this, trying to figure out what to do. What could I do, I wondered, to make a pair of dramatic false lashes more comfortable?

I know! — I’ll cut each one in half and apply the halves separately. 🙂

I grabbed a pair of haggard 120 Demis by Ardell (I’d already used them a few times before), and cut them in half right down the middle with a pair of scissors. Then I applied the outer half first and the inner half second.

Boom. This is when my mind was blown.

The Nude ’90s Are Back With Rosy Brown Tom Ford Beauty Lip Color in Negligee

August 26th, 2014 by Karen 22 Comments

Tom Ford Negligee Lipstick
Wearing Tom Ford’s new Lip Color in Negligee ($50) on my lips

Tom Ford’s Lip Colors, at $50 each — holy sh*t — are redonkulously expensive.

Yup, redonkulous, the adverbial form of the made-up word. That’s how redonkulous they are.

Still, I think they’re among the most drool-worthy, covetable things in his line. Smooth like a tabby’s tum and oh, so comfortable. Plus, it’s almost criminal how much color they contain, and they fade slowly and evenly, too, like mystical makeup apparitions…

As a side, I’m hoping we can keep the fact that I just ordered a new tube of Sable Smoke a secret, because El Hub would probably freak. Bless his heart, but he thinks that paying one penny more than $10 is too much to pay for a t-shirt, so I have a pretty good idea what he’d think about a $50 lipstick. 🙂

Until this week, Sable Smoke was my TF nude lip jam, but there’s a new nude in town, the provocatively named Negligee.

Makeup Tips for the Red Carpet and/or Black-Tie Events

August 26th, 2014 by Karen 23 Comments

My Emmys makeup look
With my sweetpea, Stef, from @weheartthisdotcom. #emmys

I can say this with absolute certainty: I never, ever expected that I would ever be doing actual red carpet makeup on myself.

Soooooooo, to prep for the Emmys this year, I asked LA-based makeup artist and all-around-nice-gal Vanessa Haro for some of her best red carpet makeup tips.

emmys-girl-in-pink

Vanessa has done makeup for the Oscars, for photo shoots in magazines, and for gajillions (I don’t know if that’s an actual number…) of brides in the So Cal area.

She also glams up some of the seriously sexiest models in LA — and those girls have butts — swear to gawd — that make me want to do squats every hour for the rest of my life. LOL!

TMI, but it’s so true.

So yeah, girlfriend is busy.

Anywho, before the show I told her, as calmly as possible, that I was kind of freaking out about my Emmys makeup situation. I couldn’t figure out what to do, and she was kind enough to help.

Here are four of Vanessa’s top black-tie/formal/gala extravaganza makeup tips.

1. Grab your mattes

“Red carpets need makeup to be a little heavier than normal, but no glitter/shimmer on the face. It tends to look cray. I use mostly neutral matte shadows and matte peachy blush with matte peachy bronzers.”

2. Place shimmer strategically

“Highlighter should be very soft. If you can, get your hands on Kohgendo’s Liquid Illuminator in Beige. It looks beautiful above the cheekbones, on the inner corners of the eyes, and right along the Cupid’s bow. Or, try a very finely milled powder — the BECCA ones applied very lightly may work. For the eyes, I add a touch of pearl finish shadow right on the lid, keeping it closer to the lash line and maybe a teeny bit of shimmery eye shadow along the outer part of the crease.”
