Stowaway!

February 27th, 2008 by Karen 48 Comments

Hooray, spring is right around the corner! The weather was warm yesterday so I drove to work bumping my new favorite song, Usher’s Love in this Club, with all my windows down and the sunroof open. I’m guilty of dancing in my car and pretending it’s a club on wheels, ha! But if you roll with me I won’t charge you cover, promise. 😉

Anyway, yesterday I might’ve gotten a little too into car dancing because when I got to the parking lot and parked my car, I forgot to roll up the back windows…whoops. It was really no big deal, because the parking lot is safe so nothing got stolen, but a shady character managed to sneak into my back seat:

meow-mix-ridin-dirty-1.jpg
meow-mix-ridin-dirty-2-1.jpg

I opened the door and waited for him to crawl out, but homie sat there and just chilled for five more minutes. He gave me dirty looks the entire time, like I interrupted his afternoon meditation session. I lured him out by taking out a Chanel Glossimer lipgloss (in the shade Galactic, holla) and waving it around. He eventually sauntered away and wouldn’t even let me pet him. Sigh. At least he has good taste in lipgloss…

Vegas Jackpot, Kinda

February 17th, 2008 by Karen 20 Comments

It appears I won’t be quitting my day job any time soon, ha! But winning a whopping $25 is better than nothing (that’s one Chanel Glossimer). I’m headed back home tonight, so tomorrow I’ll put up a post of my Barney’s New York in Vegas adventure. Hope you’re having a great weekend so far!

What’s in Your Purse?

January 18th, 2008 by Karen 89 Comments

The other day Lilan over at the Daily Cookie asked me what was in my purse, so I pulled out my bag, took out one item at a time and wrote everything down in a list.

When I finished, I felt cleansed and pure, like the pocketbook gods had absolved me of all my purse-stuffing sins.

Not only was writing out this list strangely cathartic, it was also slightly alarming. Does one (relatively sane) woman really need to lug around all this crap?

Let me preface my list by saying that I AM NOT A HOBO. I just happened to get a big, slouchy purse a few months ago, thinking it would look chic. Sure, it’s cute, but it’s also heavier than a stuffed Thanksgiving turkey.

lauren-merkin-stuffed-purse.jpg

Right now my purse contains…

  • one Blackberry smartphone
  • one wallet
  • one Goody stretchy headband (grey) for workouts
  • two black ponytail holder thingies
  • three bobby pins
  • …and a partridge in a pair tree (just kidding!)
  • one ticket stub for the movie Atonement
  • one half-eaten box of Orbit Maui Melon Mint gum. Unfortunately, I haven’t felt like chewing this gum since the minty poo experience with Poof! drops a few weeks ago.
  • two packages of DHC Vitamin C Powders (thanks Jessy)
  • two black Pentel RSVP fine tipped pens. These pens are the SH*T!
  • house and car keys
  • a pair of dangly black freshwater pearl earrings
  • a sheet of white Apple stickers (the computers, that is, not the makeup!)
  • pepper spray
  • two pieces of coral from the beach directly in front of where El Hub and I got married in Hawaii
  • a W-9
  • a Post-it with the phone number for Skates on the Bay, a restaurant in Berkeley
  • one Lemon Zest Luna Bar
  • one dark chocolate Ghirardelli chocolate square
  • a tube of Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour hand cream
  • a box of Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Maximum Coverage Concealer (unopened)
  • one pearl necklace
  • MAC Lychee Luxe Lipglass
  • Vincent Longo Illumina Concealer Stick #3
  • CHANEL Rouge Allure in Exquise
  • CHANEL Glossimer in Galactic
  • CHANEL Gloss Creme Lumiere in Petite Four
  • MAC Pink Treat Cremestick Liner
  • MAC Blot pressed powder in medium dark
  • last week’s pay stub
  • a Christmas card from my Grandma
  • one bag of Cherry Honey Ricola cough drops
  • MAC Lipglass in Nico Now
  • one binder clip
  • one 2008 Monet day calendar
  • one “To Do” list with 34 frickin’ tasks on it!

Yep… That’s about it. Oh, and yesterday there was also one Fuji apple in there but I ate it.

What can I say? I like to make lists, and I’m also a bit of a voyeur (but not in a pervy way, dirty birdies). Now it’s your turn!

What’s in your purse?

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Looks Back on 2007

December 31st, 2007 by Karen 29 Comments

fussytabby-champagne-glass-best-of-2007.jpg
Ahhh, the last day of 2007. I always get a little sad when I know something is coming to an end; I guess it’s the thought of a part of my life ending and knowing I’ll never be able to go back (unless I drop $10 million for those time travel plans on eBay).

When I started this blog, I never imagined how much fun it would be. This year has been, to quote my eighth grade East Bay self circa 1989, “hella cool.”

Dita Von Teese – Interviewing MAC Viva Glam spokesperson Dita Von Teese at the Macy’s Passport fashion show was a trip. She was so stunningly beautiful and I was so nervous. The other day, I listened to the audio recording of the interview and laughed because I even SOUNDED sweaty.

Paris Hilton – The Dita experience really helped, though, when the time came to interview Paris Hilton for the release of Can Can, her new perfume. It was a level of celebrity that I’d never experienced before — body guards, press folks, rabid fans foaming at the mouth. It was the first time I’d interviewed a really high profile celebrity AND the first time I had to do it in a room filled with people watching me. What a learning experience.

SF Fashion Week – But my favorite event of the year was hanging out with MAC backstage at SF Fashion Week. I fell in love with a few products, learned a lot and met other beauty bloggers, like Erika and Christine.

Laura Mercier – There was plenty of Laura Mercier love last spring.

Tokidoki bag – The Tokidoki bag fit all my stuff AND rocked my world.

Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash – Unfortunately, I experienced getting pimples on my butt for the first time. Fortunately, Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash saved my ass (pardon the pun).

43 makeup things – Thanksgiving was an excuse to eat turkey, wear stretchy pants and think about the 43 makeup things I’m thankful for.

43 non-makeup things – Thanksgiving also provided an opportunity to give thanks for everything else.

Chanel Glossimers – I became a fiend for Chanel Glossimers.

Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple – And Purity Made Simple simply rocked my world.

Chanel Garden Party Quad – Chanel’s National Artist John Fussell helped me fall in love with the Chanel Garden Party Quad, and now there’s no turning back!

Smashbox’s Lori Taylor – Smashbox’s Lori Taylor gave some backstage tips from L.A. Fashion Week.

Billy B. – I met and interviewed one of the nicest guys in the beauty biz.

MAC’s awesome Louise Zizzo – Louise Zizzo saved me from myself when the MAC Mattene collection came out.

Celebrity makeup artist Bruce Grayson – Bruce Grayson’s makeup tips from the Emmy’s red carpet.

Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog – I heard from Shy in Chi-town.

Guide to Smart Clubbing – You asked for tough love, and in the Guide to Smart Clubbing I gave it to ya (hey, I’ve had a lot of practice).

Curiositease – And my number one makeup love, MAC, didn’t let me down.

Pigments and Glitters – Remember when I was grouchy about Pigments and Glitters?

MAC Loose Beauty Powder – I fell in love.

Smoke Signals – It rocked my world.

MAC Mad Libs – We had a lil’ fun together.

MAC Mattene lipsticks – Where’s my plaid shirt and my Pearl Jam CD? MAC Mattene lipsticks took me back to the 90s.

A quick smokey eye with MAC shadow – Oh, this is old school.

But the best thing that happened to me this year was meeting all of you. It’s been fun getting to know you and learning about your lives. You’d think that it would be hard to make a connection behind a computer screen, but sometimes I feel like we’re all just having a cup of coffee together and gabbing about makeup.

I hope you make the most of this fantastic last day of the year!

43 Things I’m Thankful For – The Makeup Edition, 2007

November 25th, 2007 by Karen 19 Comments

austin-powers-gives-thanks

Have you heard of 43 Things? It’s a Web site where people make lists of 43 goals they want to achieve — learning French, building a better mouse trap, reading War and Peace, etc. It’s pretty fun to read the different hopes and dreams that people have.

I’ve been in a contemplative mood all weekend. When I haven’t been stuffing myself beyond maximum capacity, I’ve been thinking about all of the things I’m thankful for.

So, what happens when you think about what you’re thankful for while staring at your makeup for too long? Well, the Makeup and Beauty Blog version of 43 Things, of course.

Here’s my list of 43 makeup and beauty things I’m thankful for this year!

43 Things I’m Thankful For – The Makeup Edition

1. The magical power of the MAC 266.
2. Chanel Glossimer lip gloss is almost too sexy for this blog.
3. MAC Mineralize Eye Shadows, aka my newest obsession.
4. Celebrity Perfumes that surprised me: Covet, CAN CAN and Midnight Fantasy.
5. The perfect red lipstick: MAC Dubonnet.
6. Eyeliner for dummies #1: MAC Fluidline.
7. Eyeliner for dummies #2: MAC Technakohl.
8. Eyeliner for dummies #3: Rimmel Jungle Green.
9. The Barbie Loves MAC limited edition collection: WOOT!
10. Foot Petals save my feet from getting TOW UP.
11-14. Finding products that finally helped cure my adult acne: Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser, Clinique Mild Clarifying lotion, DDF Benzoyl Peroxide Gel, and Clinique Moisture On-Line moisturizer.
15. Meeting makeup artist Billy B. was inspiring and fun.
16. MAC Soba never lets me down.
17. Kick-arse pedicures from San Francisco’s Bliss Spa rock my world.
18. Shiseido Face & Body Sunscreen, the only sunscreen that doesn’t leave my neck feeling sticky and gross.
19. Micellar cleansers: feeding my inner lazy beast since October 2007!
20. The Clinique Pink Truffle Quad was love at first sight.
21. MAC Smoke Signals Collection is my favorite MAC collection this year (so far!).
22. Wet Ones Wipes make cleaning my makeup brushes easy.
23. MAC Pink Treat Cremestick Lip Liner doesn’t dry out my lips and goes with everything!
24. Trips to the MAC Pro Store are fun.
25. You never know what you’re gonna get when you’re in the mood for makeup experiments.
26. MAC Viva Glam
27. MAC Lychee Lux Lipglass
28. San Francisco Fashion Week
29. Seche Vite Top Coat RULES.
30. MAC Plushlash makes my lash life so easy.
31. My Chanel obsession started with a lil’ thing called the Garden Party Quad.
32-35. I’d look like a zombie if it weren’t for Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer, Biotherm Forget It! concealer and Make Up For Ever Lift concealer.
36. I can’t live without Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer.
37. There’s only one word to describe Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream — HALLELUJAH!
38. Just say no to living a life of mustache hell on earth with Sally Hansen Hair Remover Wax Strip Kit.
39. Alberto VO5 Tea Therapy Clarifying Conditioner in Vanilla Mint Tea saves my hair from dry destruction.
40. Because nobody wants Austin Powers teeth —Crest Vivid White Toothpaste.
41. I always have a few DHC Olive Virgin Oil Swabs in my purse.
42. One of my favorite drugstore mascaras: L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black!

And last, but certainly not least …

43. Almay Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover Pads because what goes on must come off.

What makeup products are you thankful for?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

5 Makeup and Beauty Tips from Paris Hilton

November 18th, 2007 by Karen 86 Comments

Tip #1: Wear a scent that means something to you.

For some people, scent is highly tied to memory, like how a whiff of men’s Eternity can bring back memories of one’s lame ex-boyfriend (I’m not bitter).

I used to sneak a spritz or two of my mom’s Chanel No. 5 when I was a wee child. For Paris, the fragrances of Jean Patou hold a special place in her heart.

The first perfume she ever wore was Jean Patou’s 1000 because her mom wore it when Paris was young. Jean Patou’s Joy was another one. “It just smells like my grandma,” said Paris. “She always used to wear it. She passed away from breast cancer a few years ago, so it kind of reminds me of her when I wear it.”

Paris signs a pic for a fan at the CAN CAN release event held at Macy’s Valley Fair in Santa Clara, California on November 17, 2007

paris-hilton-with-fan-can-can-valley-fair-santa-clara-macys

Just as fragrance can influence how we feel, it also affects how people remember us. That’s why Paris decided to make perfumes. “I wanted to do a fragrance because I feel like it’s such a big part of life.”

CAN CAN was really personal for her. She enlisted the help of friends and family in making it. Step one was to create a batch of sample fragrances with the help of a perfumer — one of those professional smell expert gurus — based on some of her favorite scents. With her three or four favorites in tow, she went home to do a little good ole’ fashioned market research. “I’ll have them smell,” said Paris of her friends and family, “and see what they like best.” With their input, she chose the fragrance she thought would appeal to the widest audience. The result was CAN CAN, a fruity floral with notes of clementine flower, cassis, nectarine, musk and amber.

This is the fourth fragrance campaign for Paris, who also did campaigns for her other perfumes: Heiress, Just Me and Paris Hilton. CAN CAN is the fourth campaign but the first with a distinct theme. She called it the best of the photo shoots she’s done for a fragrance so far. She danced and posed on a Moulin Rouge themed set while her self-titled debut album, Paris, played in the background. “We’ve always done really beautiful shots,” she said, “but not really a theme, so it was really fun.”

Paris is often reminded of how her fragrances can influence every day life. Dudes and chicks stop her on the street to tell her that they’re wearing her stuff. “I always go and smell them,” she said. I wore CAN CAN on the day I did this interview, so from now on every time I catch a whiff of it I’ll remember that day. I almost shoved my wrist up her nose at one point but thought it faux pas.

Thousands of rabid fans showed up to the event. Apparently it pays to be tall when you’re jostling other Paris fans for camera phone pics.

Tip #2: Rock the lipgloss.

CHANEL Glossimer lipgloss, YES!

Paris was rocking a fierce look in our interview. She was wearing a sleeveless cream top and black skirt by BCBG and hot pink Christian Dior shoes. Ladies and gents, you know how your girl loves the shoes. I briefly thought about stopping the interview to have my photographer (El Hub) take shots of Paris’ fantabulous footwear, but alas, I only had six minutes to get through all my questions. So sorry, fellow shoe lovers!

Paris-hilton-interview-can-can-valley-fair-santa-clara-macys-close-up

For her makeup, Paris wore a silver, sparkly eye with thick black liner on the top lid along with a soft flushed cheek. She had on MAC shadow and Max Factor blush. The focal point of her look was a pink lip topped with a layer of Chanel Glossimer lipgloss in Astral #104. “I love the glitter in it,” she said.

For the past few weeks I’ve been trying to motivate myself to do stuff by using Chanel makeup as a self-motivator — i.e. Karen does ‘X’ tasks and gets two tubes of Chanel lipgloss — but after seeing Paris wearing Glossimer, I’m afraid I’m going to cave, like, really soon. Perhaps tomorrow, even. Girlfriend’s lips looked *super hot*.

MAC Prrr Lipglass, YES!

When Paris is working, she spends a lot of time in hair and makeup with her stylists and makeup artists, so on her days off she doesn’t like to wear a lot of makeup. She does love her gloss, though, and can’t live without MAC Prrr Lipglass. “When I’m just like, chilling,” she said, “I’d rather just put on mascara, and like, really cute lipgloss.”

Maybelline Great Lash, NOOOO!

And what is Paris’ mascara of choice on her days off? Maybelline Great Lash, the one from Rite-Aid in the pink and green tube.

I thought, “Are you serious, girlfriend?” I would’ve put my money on Paris being a Diorshow kind of girl. I had some Plushlash in my purse, and I thought about giving it to her as a gesture of goodwill mascara salvation. Paris, girrrrrrl, if you’re reading this, I’m gonna hook you up with some Plushlash, STAT!

Tip #3: Get the glowy look with weekly facials and Kate Somerville products.

Paris is known for her dewy, glowy skin. She said her secret is a weekly facial at Kate Somerville, a spa located down the street from her house. She and Kate are homies, and Paris gets treatments with extractions at the spa when she isn’t too busy with work.

Extractions? I cringed.

I wish you could see Paris’ Christian Dior shoes in this pic. They were *awesome.*

karen-interviewing-paris-hilton-can-can-fragrance-macys-valley-fair-san-jose-1

“You know,” she said, “it’s good for you. Everyone should do it. And like Lasergenesis, which makes your skin really, like, plump … it’s just this light that goes on your face.”

Kate Somerville offers a full skin care line, and Hilton is an avid devotee. “I use all Kate’s products,” she said. She can’t live without Nourish moisturizer and Exfolikate (formerly known as Kate in a Jar) exfoliating treatment. On the day of our interview, beside the sparkly eye and lip, Paris’ skin actually had very little shine. It was a very matte skin look, which is really trendy right now.

“I just think it’s good to just take care of yourself and get massages and drink water,” she added.

Tip #4: Planning ahead never hurts, especially when it comes to skin care or the quest for beauty-product world domination.

Paris’ quest for world domination doesn’t stop at the fragrance counter. She is currently working on a makeup line and would also love to create skin care products. Her take home message for skin care: start young! I hear ya, girl. Like I always say, the best anti-aging secret is sunscreen (and don’t forget your neck, oy!).

Tip #5: Be polite and sweet to everyone.

Although I never really watched Paris’ show, “The Simple Life,” I’ve read a lot about her in the news, and truth be told I didn’t know what to expect from this interview. Would she roll her eyes because I wasn’t from Newsweek or the New York Times? Girlfriend did say she didn’t use the Web too much, and she’d never heard of beauty blogs before. Would she spend the entire time text-messaging Nicole on her massive jewel-encrusted smartphone?

To my surprise, she was nice. Although she seemed a bit guarded and heavily media trained, she was sweet and fully engaged throughout the conversation. The moral of this story? Despite all of the drama surrounding Paris in the news, I found her to be a sweet girl who works hard and loves her family.

I hope you had a wonderful weekend and that it was, dare I say, hot.

Makeup of the Day // Shades of Blue Liner

November 20th, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

Feeling blue

I got the idea for this metallic blue eyeliner look from a look Kristin Stewart wore to Cannes earlier this year, and I’ve been wanting to wear it ever since. Obviously, I’m no Beau Nelson (I WISH), but I tried.

#kristenstewart in Cannes hair by @bridgetbragerhair styling @taraswennen makeup and Photo by me @beau_nelson #beaunelsonstudio

A post shared by Beau Nelson (@beau_nelson) on May 10, 2018 at 12:31pm PDT

There are so many things I love about this makeup look, but the main things are 1) how vibrant and metallic the liner is, and 2) how the liner morphs from bright metallic teal in the inner corner, to green in the middle (it isn’t obvious, but it’s there, methinks) and a dark blue in the corner, and that’s just along the upper lash line! The lower lash line has these small, subtle blocks of dark blue interspersed with teal… It’s colorful but not cray-cray.

I would totally wear this out to run errands. In fact, I did, out to get groceries, and I almost said “WASSSSUP” to the older woman who straight-up stared at me in the bread aisle as if I were a visitor from another planet.

Some thoughts on the key products

The most complicated thing in this look is the liner, but you can make it as easy or as complicated as you want. If you want to go a simpler route, you can use a couple of bright metallic blue pencils and a black liner on your water line, but I did a combination of eyeliner, cream shadow and powder shadow… Basically, I was in the mood to play. 🙂

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Electric: A metallic teal with silver glitter, available in the permanent line. It’s super bright and intense, but don’t get it anywhere close to your water line because your eyes will tear up if they’re sensitive.

Chanel Stylo Ombre Et Contour in Contour Graphique ($34): I used this dark matte navy as a base for the darker blue parts of the liner. It’s creamy, smudgy and intensely pigmented. It also takes about 5 minutes to fully dry down, so you’ll have lots of time to play with it.

Chanel Splendeur et Audace Quad ($61): I layered the black and blue shades on top of the dark matte navy liner. It’s shiny but less intensely metallic than similar shadows from Urban Decay and MAC… Eh, it’s alright.

About Those Glittery New MAC Dazzleglass Shades…

August 15th, 2017 by Karen 10 Comments

New MAC Dazzleglass shades

A couple days ago I posted a pic of some new MAC Dazzleglass lipglosses that were added to the MAC permanent line last month, and I didn’t anticipate the powerful pull o’ the Dazzleglass glitter, because I was inundated by requests for me to list their names.

So here goes…

mac dazzleglass nemac dazzleglass neww
From the top: Extra Amps, Like Venus, Baby Sparks, Sugar-Rimmed, Moth to Flame, Rags to Riches, Money Honey, Smile and Steppin’ Out

Of course I like the pink, peach and coral ones, LOL! There are also some edgier colors too, like a blue (Comet Blue), a few purples (Funtabulous, Date Night and Boys Go Crazy), a white shade (Pleasure Principle), a copper (Get Rich Quick) and a red (Love Alert).

If Love Alert and Sugar-Rimmed look familiar, that’s because they also appeared in earlier MAC LE launches.

The new ones are just like I remember them (err, the other ones). They’re extra glittery and shiny, with glitter flecks bigger than the glitter in a MAC Lipglass, but they aren’t gritty at all, which is great, so they’re quite comfy, even though they’re super sticky, and there’s no way in hell you can avoid getting your high pony stuck in your gloss when you wear them.

That’s just not happening!

But, on the flip side, they last a solid four hours.
