This Week’s Top Posts

March 28th, 2010 by Karen 6 Comments

How’s it going out there? What have you guys been up to this weekend? Something fun I hope. Tabs, El Hub and I are just chugging along and enjoying the arrival of spring, finally! We’re such weather lightweights out here, LOL! I feel terrible for the folks on the East Coast still digging themselves out from under all that snow. Damn, I hope spring treats them well because this of all years they deserve it.

Before I post the open thread today I’m spending some time practicing with my cameras. You’d be amazed to know how much time I spend on photography. It’s like my life is a quest to figure out how to take the perfect picture. Straight up, photography is NOT easy, and there is no magic bullet, no magic number of megapixels that suddenly produces a great shot, but if I were forced to choose between 1) the best DSLR on the market with a $2,000 pro lens in bad lighting or 2) a $70 Canon PowerShot point-n-shoot camera outdoors on a sunny day — hands down, I’d go with the cheap camera with good lighting every time.

Anywho, we made it through another week together. 🙂 MAC Art Supplies sure looks pretty. Can’t wait to take a closer look at the collection over the next few days…

What was your favorite new collection or product of the week? Do you have one? That’s a tough one, but I’ll go with Illamasqua’s Pastel Nails. I think that yellow’s just divine.

A Little Bit of Rock N’ Roll with MAC Art Supplies

“Fittingly, the first song on my iPod’s workout playlist today was Motley Crue’s Home Sweet Home, and it FIRED ME UP! — so much so that I felt like rock n’ rolling into some pink and purple makeup for my face of the day…”

More Summery Colors and Shimmery Fun from Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess

“With highly saturated purples, bronzes, teals and gold, Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess summer collection salutes makeup mavens who love intense, rich color by thoroughly bringing on the bling.”

I’m Dreaming of Dolce and Gabbana Midnight Bloom

“I had a dream once where I was wandering through a beautiful tropical garden at night … Dolce & Gabbana’s Midnight Bloom summer makeup collection would have fit right in.”

Blues and Greens with MAC Art Supplies and MAC Trip

“Because a little color always helps, I reached for the MAC Trip Cool Eyes Palette and a few things from MAC Art Supplies, as well as Benefit’s permanent collection and a Lancome mascara. In a little while I was feeling 100% better and kinda like this…”

Vetting MAC Art Supplies Pro Longwear Lipstain Markers

“Here are seven of the nine colors. I’m curious to hear what you think. I like how rich the reds and browns are, but I think a lot of ’em look alike on my lips, maybe due to my pigmented pucker.”

Branch Out This Spring With Sonia Kashuk’s Bamboo Brushes

“New for spring, Sonia crafted these limited-edition eye, face and cheek brushes from eco-friendly bamboo, cork and a mix of natural and synthetic fibers. There’s something kind of branch-y and natural about them, like, if the Swiss Family Robinson wanted to make elegant makeup brushes, these are what they’d look like, ha!”

I’m Sweet on Illamasqua Pastel Nails

“Memories of Easter mornings flooded back today when I swatched two of the four colors from Illamasqua’s Pastel Nails collection for spring. The colors have been available through illamasqua.com for a while, but they arrive at US Sephora stores this May ($14 each).”

Let Loose with a Splash of Color

March 27th, 2010 by Karen 6 Comments

(click the tiny arrows above)

Neutrals are like the Old Faithfuls of makeup. I love ’em, but sometimes they can get a little boring. If you’re looking for fresh ideas, why not try a splash of color?

Sometimes all it takes is a peep at the yellow nail polish on your toes or bright red lips looking back at you in the mirror to brighten your day.

Here are a few ideas to put a little color in your step. 🙂

February 19th, 2010 by Karen 49 Comments

TGIF, rockstars! Congrats on making it to the weekend, *raises teacup.* Just a quick polish check in — I’m wearing China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy ($6.50) on my fingers and toes, ’cause I want to pretend it’s summer. How about you?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Speaking of nail polish, Illamasqua’s hosting a contest to create their next hot Nail Varnish colors.

Submit an image, photograph and/or swatch of your dream color along with a description of it in 50 words or less. Tell ’em what inspired you and why the shade should be one of Illamasqua’s next polishes (one entry per person, please).

From February 21 through March 14, send your entry via e-mail to competition@illamasqua.com; bloggers who post an entry on their sites can send their link to competition@illamasqua.com. Snail mail more your thang? Send your entry to Competition c/o Illamasqua, 6-8 Amwell Street, London, EC1R 1UQ.

On May 5, two winners will be selected to see their dream colors created and sold exclusively online at Illamasqua.com and at select Selfridges department stores in England. They’ll also get a bottle of their winning colors before anyone else. Kinda cool, yah?

Best Beauty Brand of the Year?

December 26th, 2009 by Karen 62 Comments

Best Beauty Brand of 2009

Okay, ladies. It’s that time of year! Time to look back on the best/worst in makeup and beauty of the year. Cast your vote in the comments for the best brand, based on any criteria. Did your best brand exceed your expectations with a single particular release, or did they consistently knock it out of the park time and time again?

Who hit it f u r t h e s t out of the park this year? A titan like MAC, Chanel, Shu or Dior? Or was it a relatively new participant like Illamasqua or Dolce & Gabbana Make Up?

Cast your vote in the comments, preceding your pick with the word “VOTE:”

VOTE: Chanel

Under Peter Philips, global creative director for Chanel Makeup, every collection has been filled with surprises, like their latest holiday stuff — WOW! Not just your typical smokey eyes and red lips. They went with teals, blues and golds, and more sheer colors than I would have expected from a holiday release.

Saturday Surfing

November 28th, 2009 by Karen 20 Comments

112809-saturday-surfing

Hey there, ladies. Happy Saturday! 🙂 It’s a crisp, windy day over here in Marin County, California. I’m bundling up to take a long, brisk walk outside with my giant mug ‘o tea.

I dunno what it is about these windy fall days, but they make me feel so alive — the sounds of rustling leaves, the wind whirling past my ears, and the cool kiss of the breeze on my skin.

I spent the better part of this morning just surfing the web and chillaxing, my standard operating procedure for Saturdays.

Here are the highlights of my day so far… 🙂

  • Avoid lip balms with these 4 ingredients — Bella Sugar

Brainstormers Unite! Maximizing the Sephora Friends and Family Sale

October 21st, 2009 by Karen 39 Comments

sephora-friends-and-family-sale-ideas

Happy Hump Day, gals! Have y’all done any Sephora Friends and Family hauling yet (using code FF2009 for 20% off online purchases from now through November 2)? MBB reader DJ needs some help generating ideas. Can you help? 🙂

Hi Karen,

What with the friends and family sale happening at Sephora now, do you have any recommendations? I know the main things I’d like to stock up on, but there are little items, like a really good hand cream or brush set, that I’d love your input on. Thanks!

-DJ

Hi DJ,

Sure thing! Here’s a list of some of my Sephora makeup and beauty faves (en lieu of just saying, “I want everything in the entire store!”)…

Eyes

  • LORAC Front of the Line Pro ($22): Drawing crisp, dark lines is easy-peasy with this fantastic liquid pen liner.
  • Benefit Bad Gal Waterproof Liner ($20): This black pencil liner applies smooth and dark, and the color stays put through sweaty workout, too.
  • Stila Smudge Pot in Kitten ($20): This pale pink shimmery cream shadow also doubles as a liner.
  • Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara ($14): LOVE this mascara! It. Does. EVERYTHING — separates, thickens and lengthens — all while delivering loads of rich, glossy color (without the clumping), and it does it all while holding a killer curl.
  • Urban Decay Super Stash Glide-On Pencils ($36): Nine mini-eye pencils come in this holiday set.
  • Make Up For Ever False Lashes ($14): With over 50 styles to choose from, the Make Up For Ever Lash Bar has lashes for just about every occasion.

Cheeks

  • Benefit Coralista ($28): I love this shimmery coral powder.
  • Philosophy Lit From Within Cream Blush ($23): Not only does this cream blush apply and blend like a dream (I use my fingers), it stays put for hours on either bare skin or atop foundation.
  • Illamasqua Powder Blusher in Excite ($23): This finely-milled blush feel just like buttah and melts seamlessly into my skin.
  • NARS Blush in Mounia ($25): Mounia looks scary in its pan, but it actually delivers a bright yet natural, just-pinched flush. (Note: Oops, Sephora no longer sells Mounia. Thanks to eagle-eyed MBB readers Angelica and Alyssa for pointing it out. Instead, consider NARS Orgasm/Laguna duo ($36) or NARS The Multiple Duo Orgasm/South Beach ($45).

Face

  • Stila Hydrating Finishing Powder ($32): This moisturizing powder feels light and weightless, and I can wear it all day long without feeling like I have makeup sitting on top of my skin.
  • Shiseido Pureness Oil-Control Blotting Paper ($17): These travel-friendly blotting papers remove oil without disturbing foundation or having to add an extra layer of powder.
  • Korres Face Primer ($10): This lemon-scented primer keeps foundation and powder from settling into my fine lines, and I swear it makes my pores appear smaller.

One Way to Remove Glitter Nail Polish

September 19th, 2009 by Karen 36 Comments

how-to-remove-glitter-polish

Would you believe my glittery Illamasqua Harsh mani lasted all but one day?

It wasn’t the polish’s fault. Coco and Co. were to blame! Late yesterday afternoon, the new Chanel Jade nail polishes I’ve been dying to try arrived in the mail (swatches coming soon!).

Glittery nail polishes can be notoriously difficult to remove — so difficult, in fact, that some women refuse to wear them at all. Those little bits of glitter will just grip nails with a fierceness and refuse to let go!

When I sat down to remove my polish a few minutes ago, I remembered that a few of you, including reader Sarah, asked about it too.

Hi, Sarah. 🙂 Here’s a way to remove glittery nail polishes that works pretty well for me:

What you’ll need

  • A nail polish remover that contains mild acetone (it should say so right on the bottle), like Zoya 3-in-1 Remove+ Polish Remover ($10)
  • Cotton balls or pads
  • A nail moisturizing lotion like Nailtiques Nail Moisturizer ($15)

Glitter polish removal, step-by-step

  • Start by thoroughly soaking a cotton ball or pad with the nail polish remover.
  • Place the soaked pad on the nail, making sure you cover it from cuticle to tip, and gently press down.

Acetone removers and glitter polish: There are many different varieties of nail polish remover, but ones containing acetone (a colorless, flammable solvent also found in many household cleaners and chemicals like paint thinner) seem to work faster than the non-acetone polishes I’ve tried, at least when it comes to removing glittery polish. Acetone is not a green chemical, however, and can be rather harsh on nails (making them dry/brittle), so I try to limit my use of it to polishes with glitter.

One brand I like is Zoya’s Remove +. It works well without over-drying my nails.

  • Hold the moistened pad in place for 30 seconds to give the remover time to work its mojo.

TIP: When I don’t have a clock nearby, I hum the Happy Birthday song to myself three times. That takes me about 30 seconds. 🙂

  • Gently slide the moistened cotton ball/pad from the cuticle to the tip of each nail. Most of the glitter should rub away, but remove whatever’s left with the same pad.
  • Repeat the same process for each of your other nails.
  • When you’re finished, wash your hands and nails well to remove the acetone and any stray bits of glitter that were left behind.

A remover just for glitter polishes? While surfing the web I spied a remover specifically designed for glitter called Cutex Glitter Girls Acetone Nail Polish Remover ($3). Have you given it a try? If you think it’s any good, please let me know.

  • You can help to keep your nails healthy after using acetone on them by using a nail polish moisturizer like Nailtiques Nail Moisturizer. It has a thick, rich formula and a light vanilla scent.

Sin Nombre: Beautiful cinematography, intense story

sin-nombre

How was your night?

I rented Sin Nombre, a subtitled film about a teenage Central American gang member who tries to escape the gang by heading north to the US. He joins up with a Honduran family also heading north but for different reasons.
